Philly fighter Mike Jones needs a punchy nickname

Mike Jones is a promising Philly fighter, but he’s missing something. And he is hoping Daily News readers can help him find it.

Jones (14-0, 12 knockouts) is without a nickname. And an up-and-coming, undefeated local boxer needs one, don’t you think?

The Daily News reader who comes up with the best nickname for Mike Jones will win a great prize when Jones headlines the Aug. 29 card at the New Alhambra. Jones faces Juliano Ramos, of Brazil, for the vacant North American Boxing Association welterweight title.

A grand prize winner gets two ringside tickets to the fight, a meet-and-greet and photo taken with Mike Jones and a fight program autographed by Jones.

Twelve runners-up will receive Joe Hand Promotions boxing shirts.

And what do you need to know about Mike to aid you in coming up with the right nickname?

“Mike Jones could be the best prospect to come out of Philly since Bernard [The Executioner] Hopkins,” said local promoter Joe Hand Jr. “He has good size, good range, he can punch, he can box and he has fast hands. In addition, he simply loves to fight. If he keeps winning, he’ll have a chance to bring back the big crowds that once attended Philly boxing on a regular basis at places like the Spectrum, Convention Hall and the Arena.”

You may e-mail you nickname suggestions to contest@joehandpromotions.com or visit www.joehandpromotions.com. You also can mail suggestions, if you hurry, to Joe Hand Promotions at 407 E. Pennsylvania Blvd., Feasterville, PA 19053.

The New Alhambra is located at Swanson and Ritner streets in South Philadelphia. Tickets are priced at $40, $55 and $65 and can be charged by calling Peltz Boxing at 215-765-0922. *
