McCoy’s Terps, Asper and Myers Heading to Tempe for All Star, Talks to Takedown

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Junior Josh Asper, ranked third by InterMat at 165 pounds, and sophomore Spencer Myers, ranked third at 285 pounds, have been selected to participate in the 2011 National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) All-Star Classic the NWCA announced on Thursday. The NWCA All-Star Classic will take place November 21 at Arizona State University.

“It is the fourth year in a row that we have had a representative,” said head coach Kerry McCoy. “It is the second time in the last four years we have had multiple participants. Overall, it is great for our program to show we have high-caliber wrestlers.”

For Asper, it is his second appearance in the field. The Parkton, Md., native will take on No. 2 Shane Onufer of Wyoming in a re-match of from the 2010 NWCA All-Star Classic. Asper defeated Onufer by a 3-2 decision at the All-Star Classic, but fell to Onufer in the fifth-place match at the 2011 NCAA Championships.

Myers will face No. 2 Ryan Flores of American. Myers wrestled Flores last year as part of a Maryland and American dual meet. Flores earned a 15-7 decision.

Fifteen universities will be represented in the event, with Maryland having two wrestlers competing along with American, Illinois, Oklahoma State and Wyoming.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Third-ranked junior Josh Asper has been selected as the Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestler of the Week after earning co-Most Outstanding Wrestler honors and capturing the 165-pound championship at the Brockport/Oklahoma Invitational.
Asper, a four-time recipient of the award, improved to 7-0 after posting four wins in the event including a 6-0 decision over sixth-ranked Scott Winston of Rutgers in the 165-pound final. The Parkton, Md., native opened the draw with 17-0 technical fall over Rutgers’ Doug Hamann and followed the victory with two more by decision before defeating Winston in the final.
Asper opened the season on Nov. 6 with three victories including a pin of Johns Hopkins’ Walt Mayfield 1:13 into the match. Of Asper’s seven wins, two are by technical fall along with one major decision and one pin.
The Terps are back in action on Nov. 26 at the Northeast Duals in Troy, N.Y. Eleventh-ranked Maryland will take on Bucknell, 23rd-ranked Central Michigan and Northern Iowa.
