Marc Fantich’s Fists of Fury Boxing Night at the Fights 22 June, 2007

Who says that Pro Boxing is DEAD?… Well let me be the first to say that Pro Boxing is still ALIVE and WELL in the Rio Grand Valley as Marc Fantich produces yet another of his sixth in a row of SOLD OUT pro-boxing events. Marc’s ‘Fists of Fury’ sure did give the crowded venue what they were there for, as the Texas State Boxing Commissioner, Dickie Cole, sat ringside during Marc Fantich’s ‘Fists of Fury-Battle of the Belts’ double Texas Title fights in two different divisions, (Middleweight and Lightweight), took place.
The last three of the scheduled eight round main event middleweight title bout kept the crowd on their feet with exciting pro-boxing ring action between Monterey, Mexico’s reigning Middleweight Champion Fernando Vela and challenger, Victor Lares, of Corpus Christy, TX. The two fighters pounded serious blows, one after the other, again and again to each others bodies, while the thrilled crowd energized the confidence of each fighter with their noisy ecstatic cheers, feet stomping and delighted overjoyed shouts for one fighter to knock the other out!.. The excitement began right from the beginning of the first round when challenger Victor Lares of Corpus Christy knocked Champion Fernando Vela to the mat. The champ shaken and surprised by the blow that landed him on the mat was up in seconds and the brawl continued up until the last bell rang. These are the kind of fights that really do deserve to be on TV!…
The crowd was polled for their decision of whom should be the winning CHAMP after the bell rang by the announcer, Alex Del Barrio, while they awaited for the judges final score tally. Once the judges decisions was in hand the Alex Del Barrio read out the vote counts without calling a fighters name to hype the audience, “judges Ruben Garcia 73-78, Raul Ortega 75-76, Fred Ledesma 72-79”!… It worked, for after reciting the final tally and before the announcer could finish his statement after announcing to the crowd “…the new ‘Fists of Fury Texas Middleweight Champion Victor Lares…by judges decision!….” The happy and jubilant crowd erupted in a joyous cheer that could be heard beyond the Rio Grande Valley River and all the way down to the Gulf of Mexico!…
Other final tally’s ended with new ‘Fists of Fury Texas Lightweight Champion’ 135lb Miguel Galindo of Mexico City, MX being beat by Dallas, TX’s Hector Beltran in :10 seconds of the fourth round battle by TKO. Other action packed bouts ended up with San Antonio’s Osvaldo Martinez knocking out Houston Brad Bowers in the heavyweight division in 2:38. Before that 118lb Salitillo, MX’s Samuel Gutierrez was beat by Mexico City, MX’s Pedro Silva in a split decision, 37-38, 37-38, 38-37. On the other hand another Silva from San Luis, MX pulled an upset, as he out boxed Carlos Garcia from Reynosa, MX in the 130lb match-up by decision. Earlier on the first three match-ups were quick show performances, as Raymondville, TX’s Eric Molina TKO’ed Beaumont, TX’s heavyweight Tim Harris in the first round with recorded time of 2:02 in the first round. Monterey’s Gerardo Alvarado and Robert Torres from Pharr, TX gave a quick performance as Torres won by TKO 1:33 of the first round as did Rio Honda’s Angel Carriaga and Los Indios’s Jose Lupe Ledesma ended their bout with the quickness as Cariaga won by TKO 1:42 of the first round.
The events matchmaker was John “Boggie” Washington, Title Sponsors were the Rio Grande Valley’s Hosanna Health Care, USA Logistics Carriers, LLC and Miller Lite. There were a host of other locally represented community sponsors for the event. The event was aired live via the internet on www.b2now and www.b2livetv.com.
