DeWalt Wraps Up 2011 Boxing Calendar With Sponsorship of “Capital Showdown: Khan vs. Peterson” In Washington, DC With Fun And Interactive In-Store And Fight Activities

Towson, Md. (December 5)… DeWalt Power Tools is ratcheting up excitement surrounding big-time boxing’s return to Washington, DC with its sponsorship of the Dec. 10 “Capital Showdown: Khan vs. Peterson” fight as the company closes out its successful year of boxing sponsorship. The fight, which is HBO Sports’ first in the District in 18 years, presents an exciting opportunity for the Towson-based company to tap into their key East Coast markets with DeWalt Power Tools’ Knockout Challenge (“Challenge”) hitting Home Depot Stores in New York City, Baltimore and Washington, DC from now until the Dec. 10 fight night.

The culmination of the Knockout Challenge will be two Mega Events, one in New York City on Dec. 7, and one in Washington, DC on Dec. 9, the day before the big fight.

“The overall goal is to take this to a different market in order to create excitement and encourage brand loyalty with professional contractors,” said Hector Vallejo, Multicultural Marketing Manager for Stanley Black & Decker. “We don’t just want to be a brand that contractors recognize. We want to be a brand they prefer.”

The local events, which kicked off in Long Island City, NY on Nov. 14, test local contractors’ knowledge of safely operating the new DeWalt 20V MAX* Impact Driver and all equipment and materials. The object of all the challenges is to drive five 1-1/4″ drywall screws flush into a 2-in. pine wooden surface in the fastest time using the 20V MAX* Impact Driver, which is Dewalt’s newest product. The participants will have the opportunity to operate the new power tool and learn about its features. The contractors with the fastest times at each of the 10 local events will qualify for the Mega Events.

“The connection between construction and boxing made sense when we started this program three years ago and it still continues to make sense,” Vallejo said. “By being a part of some of the biggest fights in recent history, we have seen our brand recognition grow. The exciting part about sponsoring Khan vs. Peterson is that we have a unique opportunity to see this particular part of our program move from west to east.”

The 10 New York City local event winners will compete to win the Mega Event prize, one DeWalt 20V Max DCK 291L2 4-Tool Kit. The Washington, DC Mega Event on Dec. 9 will feature the nine local event winners from the District and Baltimore, who will square off in the Knockout Challenge finals for a chance to win a fight prize tool package.

Vallejo continued, “Boxing is the perfect sport to help us achieve these goals, particularly with the Hispanic consumer. There are many similar attributes between contractors, boxers and power tools, such as hard work, determination, performance, toughness and durability. Boxing allows us to create a memorable experience for our customers that other sports don’t because the sport has that personal touch with its fans. We found that we have been able to connect with our consumer at a grassroots level time and time again.”
