November 1, Oberhausen, Germany:
WBA middleweight champ Felix Sturm put up a classic boxing exhibition and retained the title with a unanimous decision over challenger and fellow German, Sebastian Sylvester. It was scored 118-110 twice and 119-109. There were no knockdowns but the Sylvester was wobbly in the final round as Sturm poured it on using mainly his exellent left jab. Sylvester tried to box with the boxer and finished second best. Felix, the taller man, used his reach well, jabbed almost to perfection and followed up with left hooks but seldom used his right. Sylvester had his moments early in the fight but after a good fifth round he faded. There was a lot of trash talk beforehand from both camps but inside the ring it was a clean fight and Panamanian referee Guillermo Hernandez had little to do.
WBO jr middle king Sergyi Dzinziruk was another Universum fighter who showed very good skills in outboxing Colombian challenger Joel Julio to retain his title on scores of 116-112 twice and 117-111. Julio had his moments though and seemed to rattle the champ in some of the early rounds. But overall Dzinziruk´s better skills took over and he controlled the action with his southpaw jab and slick moves. There were no knockdowns.
Romanian heavy Christian Hammer made his prodebut but had to retire after the first due to a dislocated shoulder and inept Slovakian Robert Gregor was declared as the winner and even Robert looked surprised.
Argentinian puncher Rene Maidana took out Mexican Silverio Ortiz with a left hook to the body in the second.
News: “Big” John Klemetsen, the father of now retired lightheavy Ole Klemetsen, passed away at the age of 70 due to cancer Friday evening. John was with his son in every fight of his career and was a colorful character. Many blamed him when Ole, a big talent, failed to make it to the very top – while others felt that without him in the background Ole would never have made it as far as he did. After Ole´s retirement John and his sons put together a dance hall band and recently a documentary on John and Ole called “Blood and Honour” received very good reviews.
Multiple female supermiddle queen Natascha Ragosina will again take on Kenyan Conjestina Achieng in the headliner of SES´ promotion November 28 in Magdeburg.
