RANDY COUTURE VS. BROCK LESNAR

Brock Lesnar just moments ago won the UFC heavyweight championship belt by soundly hammer-punching Randy Couture into oblivion with ham-fisted, short-armed precision. God help you if you have a grudge against the UFC, because they will always gladly reward you by sending the biggest, ugliest, and hungriest guy they can to embarrass you in the octagon on live television. The right hand that stopped Captain America in his tracks and tipped the fight in favor of “Fedor on steroids” Lesnar skipped off the face of Couture and catapulted Lesnar to instant credibility ala Kimbo Slice’s new replacement as freak-show surprise of the year. Only Lesnar will decide if he ends up crapping out like Kimbo did in the end.

Lesnar gave props to Couture for taking a fight with such a “young buck” after such a long layoff, and Couture gave props to Brock’s “”ham-hocks” for giving him such a splitting headache.

So, Randy is left wondering what hit him and where he goes from here. It is almost inconceivable that the UFC would let up on the now former champion by letting him go up against some lesser competition. Look for Couture to round out his contract with more fights designed to tarnish his image and drown him in despair. I think it’s pretty personal with the UFC and Couture at this point, and they want to show the old man they’ve moved on. There’s nothing amicable about the UFC and Couture kissing and making up. It’s just a matter of lawsuits taking too long to do any good and Randy not getting any younger. But, before I get myself in trouble, let’s give some credit where it’s due to the other UFC fighters who went out and proved themselves tonight:

Boston-area native Kenny Florian proved himself more than worthy of a title shot with his handling of Joe Stephenson. Florian won every stage of the competition between the two, always frustrating Stephenson by maintaining good distance and utilizing his BJJ skills to perfection. The “Lion’s Kill” RNC that ended it all was not unlike Kenny’s little brother Kirk’s MMA debut in Plymouth, MA a few months ago. Florian slipped it in effortlessly and locked it up tight enough to force a very quick tap out. Stephenson just never seemed up to the challenge, couldn’t penetrate Florian’s defense, had no answer for Florian’s inside Muay Thai knees, and couldn’t ever get close enough to land a good shot.

Jeremy Stephens, with an uppercut heard ’round the world, made UFC newcomer Rafael dos Anjos’ debut disastrous. Stephens had been doing pretty horribly in the fight up until his third round TKO victory.

Dustin Hazelett locked up Tamden McCrory’s arm and pretzel twisted it into a position that was painful to even watch and even more agonizing to see on replay.

Demian Maia dismantled and dug all the granite out of Nate Quarry with a debilitating body triangle. Quarry tapped out almost immediately after being locked into a rear-naked choke.

Gabriel Gonzaga took out Josh Hendricks without breaking much of a sweat, landing some brilliant combinations to finish the fight.

Matt Brown beat Ryan Thomas by arm-bar in the second round that he fought for throughout the fight and just couldn’t get until that last moment.

Mark Bocek beat Alvin Robinson by rear-naked choke in the third round in a preliminary bout shown after the Couture and Lesnar fight ended early.

Aaron Riley, sloughing off the mothballs of inactivity, beat Jorge Gurgel by unanimous decision and won by leveraging his legendary amount of prior experience. That experience prepared him for the long battle of attrition. Riley won the day by breaking his opponent down with knees, punches, and well-placed kicks. Riley stuck to the basics and beat Gurgel down with sheer never-quit, always-move-forward attitude.

Until next time, there you have it.
