Moore Victorious At The Paradise Theater

By Matt Yanofsky {ringside}

On the night that featured a shortened six bout card, popular junior middleweight James Moore improved to 12-0 {9 KO’s} after a third round stoppage over Chris Overbey 8-7 {2 KO’s}. Moore started off the contest pressing the action and throwing a high volume of punches while also taking a few from the Sidney, Ohio native. The second round was a back and forth battle where Moore appeared to land some heavy blows mostly via straight right hands. Moore entered the third with the same philosophy and dropped Overbey with a two punch combo. Overbey appeared down for the count which elated the large Irish crowd, but he rose up at 9. Moore went right back to action pushing Overbey against the ropes and landing some more big shots before dropping him again. Overbey’s corner immediately threw in the towel to prevent further punishment. The time of the stoppage was 1:38.

Enormous Heavyweight Terrell Nelson came off a ten year layoff and raised his record to 7-5 (5 KO’s} over Brooklyn spoiler Rodney Ray 4-5-1 {4 KO’s}. After a lackluster first round, Nelson attempted to lure in Ray during the second round. Nelson raised his lead hand in Kostya Tszyu like fashion which led Ray to move in to land a punch. Before that could happen, the near 300 lber landed a huge two punch combination which ended with a straight right hand, putting Ray down for the count to the shock of the crowd. The time of the knockout was :58 of round two. After the bout, Nelson did admit to BoxingTribune.Com that he did use a page out of Tszyu’s book prior to his knockout blow.

Former amateur standout Juan Carlos Herrera 0-1 had an unsuccessful professional debut losing a four round decision to “One Shot” Thomas 1-2. Thomas controlled the entire bout and scored what should have been a knockdown during the second round. However, when Herrera was going down, he knocked over Thomas as well so the referee ruled it a no knockdown since both men ended up on the canvas. Thomas continued to dominate the fight and outbox Herrera while landing clean effective shots. Scores were 40-36 and 39-37 twice for Thomas.

Heavyweight Jason Bergman 5-2 {4 KO’s} scored a shocking first-round technical knockout over Vaughn “MVP” Parham 2-1 {2 KO’s}. Parham, who should be nicknamed “Big Time” {for his size and striking resemblance to Heavyweight contender Jameel Mccline}, was dropped via a two punch combo and arose to wobbly legs. Bergman continued to land heavy shots while Parham attempted to move away and cover up. Bergman stalked Parham and landed a 4 punch combination which pushed Parham against ropes and forced a stoppage at 2:09 of the opening stanza.

Local Cruiserweight prospect Jon “The Fighting Marine” Schneider 4-1 {3 KO’s} had an impressive return following a disappointing first round stoppage loss in his last fight by scoring an almost instant knockout over Travis Waters 0-3. Schneider appeared ready to box but saw an opening and landed a right hand which put Waters down. Waters appeared able to get back to his feet but elected to stay on the canvas for the 10 count only 40 seconds into the fight.

In the opening bout of the evening, Long Island Welterweight Mike Ruiz improved to 3-2 {2 KO’s} after scoring a first round TKO over James Ventry 3-4 {2 KO’s}. Ruiz landed aggressive body punches from the sound of the opening bell. Ruiz was able to hurt Ventry and quickly dropped him twice forcing a referee stoppage 1:36 into the opening round.
