3nd Annual Phantom Gourmet Hot Dog Safari Comedy Night, May 28 at Kowloon

BOSTON (April 30, 2009) – The 20th annual Phantom Gourmet Hot Dog Safari (PGHDS), one of Boston’s premier family and charity events, returns Sunday, May 31 (9:00 AM-4:30 PM) to Suffolk Downs in East Boston for the benefit of Cystic Fibrosis/The Joey Fund.

PGHDS creator Eddie Andelman, The Godfather of Sports Radio, has passed the baton to his three sons from Phantom Gourmet fame — David, Michael and Dan. Andelman’s original Hot Dog Safari started with a bus ride for 200 people to the Windham Bar & Grill in Connecticut. It has steadily grown each year with thousands upon thousands now attending and last year more than $250,000 was raised, increasing its grand total to more than $3,250,000 since its inception.

“Phantom Gourmet and the Andelmans receive no compensation from this event,” said Joe O’Donnell, whose young son Joey died from Cystic Fibrosis (“The Joey Fund”). “All the proceeds go directly to the Joey Fund and Cystic Fibrosis, and by planning and promoting the event, they help keep the overhead extremely low.”

The Phantom Gourmet Hot Dog Safari includes plenty of food and soft drinks (hot dogs, sausages, Richardson’s ice cream, Dunkin’ Donuts, Nantucket Nectars, Entenmann’s, etc.), as well as a wide variety of fun activities for children, a full card of live horse races (12:45 PM post time) for adults, and live broadcasting from 1-3 PM on 96.9 WTKK FM Talk.

“Our father, Eddie, got this great event going and he’s still a big part of it,” David Andelman explained. “His sons are going to keep it going, even stronger through our Phantom Gourmet connections, for at least another 20 years.”

Countless hot dogs plus sausages, cooked by members of the Massachusetts National Guard, are represented by the following companies: Kayem Brats, Fenway Franks, Fuddruckers, Sir Franks-A-Lot, Old Neighborhood and The Sausage Guy. Kowloon Restaurant will offer a unique “Chinese hot dog” and Harrow’s provides its famous chicken pies.
