August 18, Berlin, Germany:
IBF middle champ Arthur Abraham retained the title with a brutal eleventh round knockout over a very
brave challenger in Khoren Gevor. The end came at 2.41. Gevor, who had fought with a beyond belief heart
and determination was all of a sudden hurt by a left hook and staggered backwards, Abraham followed up,
missed with a big right hook but the short, powerful left hook that came behind it took out Gevor. The
challenger went down on his knees and fell over as American referee Pete Podgorski dispensed with the
count.
Gevor got up relatively quickly but looked badly dazed for minutes.
After ten it was scored 98-91, 97-93 and 97-95, all for Abraham.
Gevor was off to a good start outworking the champion. However, Abraham had much superior power and once he found the range he would nail Gevor almost at will, fighting in spurts with long spells off as he often
tends to do. Khoren, a southpaw, showed a good chin but most of all an enourmous will and kept coming back
no matter what.
On the undercard welter Michel Trabant and Giammario Grassellini fought to a technical draw after Trabant
was badly after an accidental clash of heads.
Cuban cruiser Yoan Pablo Hernandez knocked out Brazilian Daniel Bispo in the first to win the vacant
WBA Fedelatin title.
Supermiddle Mads Larsen clearly beat Australian Nader Hamdan after eight rounds. Hamdan was floored in the
third.
Cruiser Alexander Frenkel scored a bad knockout over American Shane Schwarz in the first and it took a long
time for Schwarz to get up on his feet.
World Sporting Promotion and Union Boxing Promotion join forces August 21 in Donetsk, Ukraine, for a very
interesting show. Unbeaten welter Vyacheslav Senchenko defends the EE-EU title against Serbian Zoran
Didanovic in one of the headliners. At supermiddle WBC Youth champ Stas Kashtanov is in against Namibian
Vikapita Meroro. Meroro´s compatriot Paulus Moses is in against localite Andrei Kudryatsev in a WBA I/C
title at lightweight. On the undercard cruiser Aleksander Gourov, former EBU champ, stays busy
against Belorussian Vitaly Shkraba. There is also a WBO I/C title defence by Stanislav Merdov at
featherweight and Vladimir Tarenko is in against Vladimir Tarenko in a EE-EU 140 lb titlefight. The
show goes out in Europe live in EuroSport and on delayed TV in Namibia.
Team Palle begins the new season September 14 in Horsens with Johny Jensen vs Louis Del Valle in a
fight for the vacant WBA I/C title. Del Valle was WBA champ at lightheavy in the late 90´s. In supporting
bouts Anita Christensen will defend her titles, WBA, WBC and GBU, at bantam against a yet to be named
opponent. Jr middle Reda Zam Zam will again face Carlos Donquiz, who knocked him out in the very first
round in March. Also on the bill are reportedly lightweight Martin Kristjansen, who is rumored to be
headlining a Team Palle show in October, cruiser Anders Hugger Nielsen, jr middle Thomas Povlsen and
perhaps female jr welter Vinni Skovgaard.
Both IBF champ Arthur Abraham and challenger Khoren Gevor scaled 72,5 kg / 159,75 lbs for tomorrow´s
all-Armenian showdown at the Max Schmeling Hall in Berlin. Norwegian jr light Andreas Evensen was pulled
off the show due to illness. Cuban cruiser Yoan Pablo Hernandez guns for his first title in the pros and
face Brazilian Daniel Bispo for the vacant WBA Fedelatin title in a scheduled ten-rounder.
Cuban defectors, heavyweight Odlanier Solis, and “catchweighters (they seem to gain weight with every
fight in “freedom”) Yuriorkis Gamboa and Yan Barthelemy will according to a spokesman for Arena Box
Promotion fight September 2 in Berlin, September 21 in Luebeck and October 19, again in Berlin. The by some
media announced fight for Gamboa in Miami August 24 might according to the spokesman happen but isn´t
certain.
