Interview With Bobby Gunn

By Matt Yanofsky

I had the pleasure of speaking with IBA Cruiserweight Champion Bobby Gunn (16-2 13 KO’s) recently. Gunn had to deal with the frustration of numerous fights falling apart. Then, his dream came true. Gunn received a call from Frank Warren to fight WBO champion Enzo Maccarinelli on April 7 in England. Fans can reach Bobby at TeamGunn.Com.

MY: Bobby what’s up? Congratulations on getting the fight of your life! I know you contacted Frank Warren’s matchmaker Dean Powell many times about fighting Maccarinelli after multiple opponents fell through for the April 7 fight. How did this finally work out?

BG: All hard work! We finally got thought to him and Team Gunn finally convinced him that it’s a good fight for both of us. You have two big punchers going at it, and this should be an exciting fight.

MY: There was a rumor that Roy Jones, Jr. contacted you about a fight. How did that all come about, and what happened with that fight? BG: We called them back and spoke with them. We had multiple conversations, but nothing came through. I had the Maccarinelli fight, and I took that because it was too good to pass over.

MY: How is camp? Who have you been sparring with to prepare for the biggest stage of your boxing career?

BG: Incredible! My personal trainer Kyle White has helped put me in the best shape of my life. I have been sparring with a lot of good pros such as Emanuel Nwodo. He is one of the best Cruiserweights in the world. Many fighters have dodged him. He has helped me so much. I think he is the best cruiserweight in the world!

MY: HBO just announced that they will be showing the Amir Khan fight on TV in the United States instead of yours. Is that frusturating to you that they are putting on a British prospect instead of an American fighter in a World Title fight?

BG: Not really. If Khan takes his opponent out early, they will show our fight. I don’t get nervous or care who is against me in the UK because none of them can get in the ring.

MY: Many fans in England are upset that David Haye, an English fighter, is not fighting Maccarinelli and Bobby Gunn—who most of them have never heard of—is getting the match. What do you have to say to those fans?

BG: There are two kinds of people in this world: those who talk about it and those who do it. David Haye was talking about the fight, and he was offered the fight. Then why didn’t he take it? Haye is just hyped up and in reality didn’t want the fight.

MY: You had an 11-year layoff from 1993-2002 what caused such a long layoff?

BG: I had seven or eight fights in that time that for some reason were not picked up. I fought and www.boxrec.com is not showing it! I also had managerial problems in the past.

MY: If you are successful, who would you like to fight next?

BG: Who ever pays the most. Remember, this is a business!

MY: Bobby, thanks for your time. What do you have to say to your fans and the readers at UnlimitedFightNews.Com?

BG: I’d like to tell my fans I appreciate all their support and the great things they say. I’d also like to thank Liquid Lightning energy drink who has sponsored me for this great title fight! Also, Joe Mack deserves a special thanks for helping put this fight together with all his hard work behind the scenes.
