By Edwin Rollon, Manila Standard Today
President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo yesterday issued Proclamation 1407 declaring the month of November as the World Boxing Council Month, ensuring the full cooperation and support of the government when the country hosts the 45th WBC Convention set Nov. 11 to 17 at the Manila Hotel.
Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita attested the proclamation, which was hand-carried and personally received by Games and Amusements Board chairman Eric Buhain.
Buhain, a multi-titled swimmer and former chairman of the Philippine Sports Commission, said that he is “extending his warmest gratitude” to the President, on behalf of the entire boxing community.
“This really boosts our efforts to ensure a trouble-free, well-secured and successful hosting of the Convention. With the President backing the event, it became more than just a gathering of the world’s top boxing personalities, but a celebration of Philippine boxing history as well,” said Buhain.
In proclaiming the WBC Month, Mrs. Arroyo considered the stature of the WBC as the world’s biggest, most prestigious and influential boxing organization consisting of 168 member-nations and 14 affiliated federations.
According to the President, the convention will open the door of opportunity for the Philippines to be recognized as a world-class venue for international forums and more importantly, show its support to boxing, a sport where Filipinos excel and have shown their potential as world beaters and champions.
