Gilroy’s Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero is heading back into the ring to fight veteran Joel Casamayor on July 31 in Las Vegas. The junior-welterweight fight is part of the undercard for the long-awaited rematch between Juan Manuel Marquez and Juan Diaz.
Guerrero (26-1-1, 18 knockouts) has returned to boxing full time now that the health of his wife, Casey, has improved since she underwent a successful bone-marrow transplant this year to treat cancer. A victory over Casamayor would put Guerrero, 27, on track for his fourth world championship.
“If he can pass this test with flying colors, we’re going to have another real player at 140 pounds,” promoter Oscar De La Hoya said of Guerrero.
But that means getting past the always tough Casamayor – a 38-year-old native of Cuba who won a 1992 Olympic gold medal and brings a record of 37-4-1 with 22 knockouts.
