But here’s a synopsis of the THE ULTIMATE FIGHTER for Episode on Wednesday Nov.28, 2007
I saw Tom “The Barncat” Speers fight his first fight in the WEC last night on Versus. His opponent was Sidney Silva (Silva=most popular name in mma). The fight was back in May. It was sort of funny because Frank Mir, the commentator, was saying how important technique was over strength and talking about how technical Silva was and that Tom Speer was bascially a big strong guy with little technique and just about at that time The Barncat picks up Sidney Silva and slams him then he postures up rears back and delivers a huge right hand to Silva’s face, connects perfectly, and because Silva’s already on his back, his head has nowhere to go except to ricochet off the ground. Fist to Face to Head to Ground then followed it up with some nice ground and pound until the referee stops the match and declares it a TKO. It was an impressive display of power from Tom Speers and makes me realize that his name too will be in the hat also for possilbe victors this season. Mac Danzig, Tom Speers, and George Sotiropolous in my opinion are the fighters who have the best chances of being this season’s Ultimate Fighter.
Tom does seem like a Matt Hughes clone when it comes to their fighting styles and their build. He has that raw brute strength. They keep calling it “that farmboy strength” which is kind of funny. It seems Hughes has really taken to Tom, even though Hughes made the point he’s not there to meet any new friends. But Hughes said Tom reminds him of himself and he thinks Tom has the spirit of a champion, or something to that effect. I do think Tom could be a real force in the Welterweight division with experience and proper training. Mainly I wanted to point out how impressed I was with his performance in the WEC. If you ever get the chance to see it, you should check it out.
The fight tonight is Tom Speers vs. Ben “goofy grin” Saunders. I’ve said it before; Ben’s goofy grin would make me so mad in a fight. But before the fight we have more bored fighter antics. I guess they put a turd in the back part of the toiler where the water goes. They also wrecked the house pretty good after drinking alot. Mac makes fun of Ritchie’s laugh which was annoying. I can feel Mac on this cause I seriously hate being around drunks. Hate it…hate it….hate it. And Ritchies laugh was annoying me, I can’t imagine being in the house with it after you’ve been training hard and they’ve been up drinking.
Best quote of the episode…”Pranks are pranks but when you bring doo doo into the equation that’s fucked up.” That was classic. They called it an upper decker. Definitely childish. Immature. But whaddaya gonna do? Makes for funny TV sort of. Mac said, “These are the type of people representing our sport?”
Ok….so Ben Saunders gave Ben Barrera lots of stitches. And someone just said the same thing Frank Mir said in Tom Speers WEC fight, “Technique will always beat strength.” Well, obviously not always cause Speers whipped dat ass for Sidney Silva. I guess the “goofy grin” I refer to of Ben’s….they refer to as the “sadistic smile”. Whatever it is ahhhh I freakin hate it. OK fight time……I really hope Speers takes Saunders to the pasture. Destroys him like a sick horse. Knocks him down like a sleeping cow.
Round 1 – Clinch, Tom goes for takedown…gets it. Ben looking for submissions. Won’t let Tommy posture up to swing so Tommy picks him up and slams him. Ben is able to get an armbar that looks like he breaks it but Tom gets out. Then Ben gets him in a triangle and he gets out of that somehow. Jesus Christ. Ben’s putting on a clinic and Tom is putting on an escape clinic. I told you Tom looked impressive. Anyone that can survive that armbar is no joke. Tom landing some ground and pound. Ben’s face is bloody. Tom lands some elbows. I wish Rashad would take a few tips from Tom here and do more on the ground. Tom postures up actually stands up and lands a big right just like in that WEC match. Tommy pretty much overpowers Ben on the ground. Ben threw all his ju-jitsu at Tommy and Tommy survived. I’m impressed for sure. I still can’t believe he survived that armbar….that think I swear looked like it was gonna snap.
Round 2 – Tommy takes Ben down in the first 30 seconds but Ben gets up. Tommy throws some knees then takes him down again. Tommy seems to take him down at will. Here comes the g n’ p from Tommy. Tommy takes a huge swing from standing position but misses this time. Tommy is in Ben’s open gaurd. Ben’s looking for an opening for submissions. Ben is doing a good job of not taking too much damage and scrambles once really good but ends up back on his back. Tommy is not doing alot right now but still enough to stay busy. Elbows now from Tommy. OK Ref stands them up. One minute to go. Ben throws a knee but misses. Tommy back on top now. Ben’s is holding his hands good to resist damage but Tommy lands a couple shots. Ref stands them up again 25 seconds. Another takedown for Tommy and that should clinch the win for him easily. Tommy lands some small shots.
To Ben’s credit, he didn’t allow Tommy to do alot of damage from the top but to Tommy’s credit he took Ben down at will and did land some decent ground and pound and stayed as busy as he could considering Ben wouldn’t let him move too much. I thought it was a good fight. Neither guy was able to finish the other but I think Ben actually came closer to finishing it when he had Tommy in that armbar and then a triangle but mostly the armbar. However other than that he landed practically nothing. I would give the win to Tommy though I could see how the judge’s could possibly have it one round each at this point.
UNANIMOUS DECISION…….TOMMY SPEERS.
I’m sticking to what I said before…..The Ultimate Fighter will be either Mac, George, or Tommy.
Mac Danzig will be facing Matt Arroyo. Tommy Speers will be facing George Sotriopolous. At least that’s who made it to the semifinals but I just saw a preview for the last episode and they said that one of these fighters is going to “walk off the show.” So that throws a monkey wrench in the whole thing. It appears a replacement will be made for one of these fighters in the semifinals. The final episode is next Wednesday December 5th and then the Finale will be live on Spike TV Saturday December 8th where the winner of The Ultimate Fighter Season 6 will be decided and with a main event being Clay Quida vs. Roger Huerta.
