I started a thread here on Sherdog today I’d like to see some fans of MMA comment on.
Do you think James Toney’s a good fit for MMA, does his brash nature help sell fights, and does he really have a shot at winning despite making the MMA transition so late in his career? Weigh in, and we’ll include your most insightful comments in a future preview piece.
My personal opinion is that Toney is going to represent boxing well and could possibly be one of the most successful boxing to MMA converts in terms of how he does in his first fight. If Dana White truly does give him “stupid money” for the fight, it could also lead to a lot of changes in fighter pay and lead other successful boxers to make the transition. This is also coming from the same guy who thought Kimbo could be a force in MMA and Mariusz Pudzianowski had a shot to beat Tim Sylvia this past May, so don’t bet on my prediction to come true. Still, I think Toney will do much better than he’s expected to. If he doesn’t win he will have to put on a true show to get another fight. I doubt Dana would sign the guy to a multi-fight contract before seeing him in real action first.
