ODU’s James Nicholson, Ready for Season and the Top of the Box talks to TDR TV

NORFOLK,VA–Six ODU student athletes have been selected to the 2009-10 Virginia Sports Information Director’s Academic All-State Team. Rising senior James Nicholson (Wrestling),juniors Trian Iliadis (Men’s Basketball), Mairi Buchan (Women’s Basketball),along with recent graduates Elizaveta Moiseeva (Women’s Swimming & Diving), Steffen Rabben (Men’s Soccer) and Ashley Kellogg (Women’s Lacrosse) the 119 student-member squad.

James Nicholson was selected to the National Wrestling Coaches Association’s Division I National Academic Team for the third straight year. He was also named the Colonial Athletic Association’s Scholar Athlete of the Year for wrestling. The Des Moines, Iowa native compiled a sparkling 32-3 overall record this past season and was the CAA champion at 125-pounds for the third straight year. Nicholson ranked Seventh nationally and was the #7 seed at the 2010 NCAA Championships, going 2-2. He carries a 3.48 GPA in finance.

Moiseeva was the recipient of the ODU Jack Wilkins/James Howard Female Scholar Athlete of the Year. She was one of the Lady Monarchs top freestyle competitors. She registered ODU’s second best time this season in the 1,000 free of 10:46.93, and fourth best times in the 100 free of 53.56 and 200 free at 1:55.45. The native of Moscow, Russia graduated with a 3.93 grade point average in international studies.

Steffen Rabben, was the recipient of the ODU Jack Wilkins/James Howard Male Scholar Athlete of the Year. He scored five goals with two assists and had two game winning goals for the Monarchs last season. He is a former CAA Rookie of the Year and a second team All-CAA selection. Rabben, a native of Valdres, Norway graduated with a 3.66 grade point average in economics.

Trian Iliadis was named to the Colonial Athletic Association’s first team All-Academic squad this past season. He played in all 36 games for the Monarchs, averaging 3.1 points per game. Iliadias scored a Career high 13 points in ODU’s win over Charlotte and 11 in the Monarchs win over 11th ranked Georgetown. The Perth, Western Australian native was presented the CRC Press Chemistry Achievement award which is given to a chemistry or bio chemistry major with the highest average in chemistry 115N-116N sequence. He has a 3.84 GPA.

Lady Monarch basketball player Mairi Buchan averaged 4.8 points and 2.3 rebounds along with shooting 78 percent from the free throw line. She was named to the first team CAA All-Academic squad. Over the summer the Stirlingshire, Scotland native helped lead Great Britain’s under-20 national team to the European Championships. She carries a 3.97 GPA in pre-med and biology.

Ashley Kellogg was named second team All-CAA in 2010 and posted a team high 42 goals during her Senior season. The Downingtown, Pa. native ranked fourth in the CAA with 2.8 goals per game and ended her remarkable Lady Monarch career fourth all-time in both goals (127) and points (151). Kellogg Graduated with a 3.67 grade point average in physical education and exercise science.
