CASTILLO – HARRIS ADDED AS NEW MAIN EVENT ON FRIDAY JUNE 6TH AT THE LEGENDARY BLUE HORIZON

Posted on | May 17, 2008 | No Comments

12 round cruiserweight affair added to an already packed night of boxing

PHILADELPHIA (May 15, 2008)—In what was already a big night of boxing just got even bigger as a twelve round cruiserweight battle between Elieser Castillo & Adam Harris has been added to a great night of boxing at The Legendary Blue Horizon in Philadelphia.

Castillo of Miami via Havana, Cuba has been a mainstay in the Heavyweight division as he has fought and defeated some top-ranked contenders over his twelve year career.

Castillo has a record of 30-6-2 with seventeen knockouts. He holds victories over the first man to defeat Wladimir Klitschko in Ross Purrity, undefeated Andre Purlette (32-0), former U.S. Olympian Lawrence Clay-Bey (18-1) & former IBF Cruiserweight champion Uriah Grant, who Castillo starched in one round.

Castillo has never been knocked out despite being in the ring with a whose-who of the Heavyweight division. He has gone the distance with former IBF Heavyweuight champion Chris Byrd, former WBO Heavyweight title challenger Alexander Zolkin for which Castillo battled to a disputed draw, as well as dropping razor thin majority decision to former WBC Heavyweight champion Tim Witherspoon and former IBF world title challenger DaVarryl Williamson.

In a way Castillo can avenge the loss to Witherspoon as the former WBC champ is one of Harris’ trainers.

Castillo is coming off a sixth round stoppage over Lenzie Morgan this past February 21st in Miami

A win over Castillo would catapult the thirty-three year old Harris.

Harris, who now resides in Philadelphia is a native of Worcester, Massachusetts and has a record of 10-0 with seven knockouts.

Harris has been slowly stepping up the competition and Castillo presents the biggest challenge by far for Harris.

Harris is coming off a six round majority decision over Garry Campbell on November 2nd at The Legendary Blue Horizon.

The co-feature will be a featherweight tussle between Jules Blackwell (7-0-2, 2 KO’s) of Phoenixville, Pa and Tyrell Samuel (9-2, 5 KO’s) of Philadelphia.

Steve Upsher (16-1-1, 4 KO’s) takes on Jaime Morales (4-7, 2 KO’s) in a battle of Jr. Welterweights from Philadelphia scheduled for six rounds.

Gerald Smith (2-0, 1 KO) of Philadelphia will take on Ronnie Boyd (5-3, 2 KO’s) of Washington, DC in a four round Super Featherweight bout.

Also seeing action on June 6th will be middleweight Mario Mina (1-0, 1 KO), cruiserweight Ran Naksah (12-0, 8 KO’s), middleweight Deferson Legrand (3-0, 2 KO’s), jr. middleweight Orlando Lewis (4-1, 3 KO’s) and featherweight Paul Fernandez (2-1-1, 2 KO’s)

Thom Ortiz- Embattled Head Coach at Arizona State. I think it’s a real possibility we can turn this around. there is precedents and we need to take a look at those examples of what worked and what didn’t. Thom will join us to uncover the truths and what needs to be done right away.

James Nicholson- Old Dominion Wrestler will join us in studio to discuss his freshman year, his 8th place finish on the year and the future. I just worked out around this kid and he looks good. It will be interesting to get his perspective on the year.

Pat Santoro- New Head Coach of Lehigh will join us to discuss his recent move, what he did right at Maryland and what brought him back to the hills and mountains of the valley he called home as an under grad and as a young coach.

Bob’s life story is Being looked at for a motion picture treatment.

About the Author

Mike Chapman is considered amateur wrestling’s greatest historian and writer. He is the author of 15 books and hundreds of magazine articles. He recently retired from a 35 year career in newspapers, and a retired from directing the International Wrestling Institute & Museum in Waterloo, IA.

What can we do for AZ State right now:

Form a committee with people who can help you achieve everything you can to reinstate the program. Get people involved who can help you develop this plan to save the program and who can get access and the attention of the following list of people. Put your case on paper with how you want these people to help you:

Ø Governor of Arizona- Write and call

Ø State Regents for Higher Education- Write and call

Ø State and U.S. representatives, congressmen, and senators, Write and call

Ø Contact Major figures in the state like Jerry Colangelo…

The ASU trustees, president and A.D. have already approved the decision and will not respond to backlash unless it comes from above their heads.

Develop with the help of a Public Relations consultant, a marketing plan that will help sell this story on the university’s denial of opportunities for wrestlers like Anthony Robles. See if ESPN, local and other national media affiliates will help make the case for the “little guy”. Talk to some lawyers and see what case should be made for our PR efforts.

This is OUR sport. WE must fight for it! We must not wait for others to jump on the band wagon. We must take control and right the ship that is wrestling. We’ve made some great and positive strides by adding wrestling programs. Don’t let the decision to drop wrestling at AZ State rest in the hands of those that don’t give a rip about the sport or the people it benefits. Get involved and stay involved.

TWO GREAT FIGHTS FEATURED ON THIS WEEK’S TUF

Posted on | May 15, 2008 | 1 Comment

THE ULTIMATE FIGHTER – Week 7

By: Jack Bratcher

[mpinpage]

First fight of the night is:

Gerald Harris vs. Amir Sadollah

Forrest makes a bet with his fighter, Amir Sadollah tonight. He tells him if that if Amir wins his upcoming match against Gerald Harris, that Forrest will shave half of his own head and keep it that way for the rest of the season. Now that’s one heck of a bet. Not sure if Forrest had little confidence that Amir would win or more likely he thought it would be some extra great motivation to win. I mean come on, that would be funny.

First round: guys come out and Gerald picks Amir up over his head like a child and slams him hard. Huge slam. He pretty much dumped Amir Sadollah right on his head. Gerald gets on top of Amir but eventually Amir gets back up then boom Gerald slams him again with another big one. Gerald stays on top of Amir about four out of five minutes of the first round, controlling him. The last minute Amir was struggling to get back up to his feet and throwing shots during the process.

Second round starts with Amir throwing leg kicks and Gerald pushes him against the cage and holds him there as Amir drops into the splits, then works his way back up. Gerald looking for the takedown. Amir throws a good knee. Gerald keeps holding one of Amir’s legs and that’s all he’s going after at this point. Amir lands a couple of shots and so does Gerald. Then Gerald shoots for the one leg again. Gerald gets dropped with a knee by Amir followed by some shots. Ref stops the fight. It was a perfect knee shot right to the chin from the clinch. Next scene shows Amir going to sit down outside the cage saying “I wasn’t out.” He was out.

For Amir to make it through that first round with those slams he took, you gotta give him alot of credit. Gerald was on his way to probably winning a decision but Amir stuck in there and pulls out the win by TKO. Gerald is pissed. Screaming. Crying. Saying he let everyone down. Rampage had a good talk with him though and cheered him up. It has to be hard when he was doing so good.

Looks like Forrest is getting a haircut.

Second fight of the night is:

Cale Yarborough vs. Patrick Schultz

Pat trains at Sityodtong with Mark Dellagrotte and Kenflo. Pat lost one of the preliminary fights this season and had to leave but they brought him back when the fighter with herpes had to leave. Cale Yarborough has an 0-0 pro record. Before the match the guys are talking like this will most likely be a standup bout. Both guys come out swinging. Pat looking a little more technical. Both guys are swinging but Pat drops Cale with a nice shot to the jaw. Fists are flying, legs are flying. Someone is getting KO’d. These boys have some nuts, you got to hand it to them. This is what you like to see. This is NOT a sparring match which I can’t stand when professional mma fights become nothing more than a glorified sparring match. This is not that. Nice body shots by Pat. Both guys landing. Pat landing some good shots to the face. I’ve counted three big shots Pat has landed to Cale’s dome. Cale’s had enough, he shoots in and takes Pat down. Cale landing some small hammerfists and short punches . Pat gets uup. Cale takes Pat down again lands some ground and pound with some little rabbit punches. One helluva round. Great round in my opinion. Pat was landing some harder shots standing but Cale got two takedowns with some fair ground and pound.

Second round. Both guys swinging. Cale with leg kicks and a good kick to Pat’s face. Knee to face by Cale. Cale shoots takes Pat down again. Those takedowns are getting Pat. Cale landing good elbows from side control. Big elbows by Cale. Pat holding on to Cale’s head. Nice shots by Cale. Cale trying to go to full mount and staying busy in the process. Pat pushed against the cage. Rampge yelling for Pat to get up but I think he’s done. He can’t have much left….his hair has too many highlights to have too much left. Big shots by Cale now still on top pounding for about two or three minutes now. Very close to being stopped. Pat has all but given up. Offering no ddefense. Very suprised referee did not stop that fight.

Cale wins by majority decision.

Forrest and Rampage almost have the referee and judges into letting this fight go one more round. But they go ahead and give the majority decision to Cale. Forrest says, “Cale can go another round.” Rampage says, “What did you say?” Forrest says, “I said we can go another round if you want.” Rampage replies, “Yeah it was one round each so let’s do one more.” At this point the referee has both of the fighters by the hand and is ready to announce the winner and Forrest is still in the ring. Patrick Schultz motions for Forrest to get out of the ring and says something to the effect, “Just go on man….I can’t wait until you and Rampage fight.” And Forrest gives him a look like “What the fuck did you just say?” As far as I can remember, that’s the first time I recall out of all the episodes and seasons of the Ultimate Fighter that one of the contestants has come out and said something that disrespectful right to the face of one of the coaches. Many have done it in private but I don’t recall seeing that happen before. I think my mouth sort of hung open for a moment as I thought to myself….”are you a complete moron? you just got tooled by an 0-0 TUF contestant and you’re gonna talk like shit to Forrest Griffin. Oh man, that’s not smart at all. I just thought those highlights in your hair made you a goofball, but you really have not brain at all do you.”

Rampage says I bet our fight don’t go to no decision.

Rampage starts breaking stuff. Forrest is shown getting angry as well.

Dana says, both of these guys are acting like Ken and Tito now.

Damn I was looking forward to Forrest’s new haircut but I guess they forgot or something.

Cruiserweight sensation Aaron Williams headlines his first ESPN2 FNF show May 23 “Ring Warriors” at Twin River Events Center, RI

Posted on | May 15, 2008 | No Comments

PROVIDENCE (May 14, 2008) – ESPN2 Friday Night Fights (ESPN2 FNF) returns May 23 to Rhode Island as unbeaten prospect “Awesome” Aaron Williams, the future of the cruiserweight division, headlines his first major show on “Ring Warriors,” promoted by Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment and Sports, Inc. (CES), live from Twin River Events Center in Lincoln.

“Ring Warriors” features some of the hottest, most exciting prospects in the world – potential world champions such as Williams, 2004 U.S. Olympian Jason “Big Six” Estrada and Philadelphia’s exciting super lightweight “Hammerin’” Hank Lundy – along with a grudge match and some great young boxers.

Williams (17-0-1, 12 KOs), living in Las Vegas but making North Providence his second home, was last scene registering a sensational knockout of Andre Purlette (40-3) in the second round of their April 4 fight on the ESPN2 FNF show at Twin River. Williams, 22, takes on Columbian power puncher Jose Luis “Pantera” Herrera (15-4, 15 KOs), who has knocked out each of his 15 victims.

In an 8-round Special Heavyweight Attraction, Providence heavyweight Estrada (12-1, 2 KOs), coming off of an impressive 10-round decision against former NABO/NABA/WBC Continental Americas heavyweight champion Lance “Mount” Whitaker (32-5-1, 27 KOs) headlining the April 4 ESPN2 FNF show, faces Philadelphia knockout specialist Derek “The One Man Riot” Bryant (20-4-1, 17 KOs).

In the chief supporting bout on the stacked undercard, Lundy (10-0-1, 6 KOs) takes on Texas State champion Steve Almaraz (7-0, 4 KOs) in the battle of unbeatens in a six-round bout.

“The action promises to be explosive,” promoter Jimmy Burchfield said. “Fans better not leave their seats during any of these fights. Aaron Williams really is awesome. His devastating knockouts of opponents have been showcased on ESPN, not only on its Friday Night Fights shows, but over and over again on Sports Center. He is a future star; world champion in the making, and he’s made a lot of friends in his two fights at Twin River – incredible first and second knockouts of quality opponents. Aaron will fight anybody and Herrera has 15 knockouts in 15 wins. Jason has already started making noise in the heavyweight division, especially after beating a great fighter like Whitaker so convincingly, on his way to becoming world heavyweight champion someday. His opponent, Bryant, is a typically tough, heavy-handed, very dangerous Philadelphia fighter who has 17 knockouts to his credit.

“Lundy reminds me of a little Vinny Paz, who is one of Hank’s biggest fans. Hank keeps coming forward like Vinny. He’s a very exciting, charismatic young fighter. McCreedy has his Irish fans behind him for his grudge match against always-tough Mayes. Starnino is a very popular fighter in Rhode Island, Camacho can put his opponent’s lights out at any time with either hand, and Beauchamp has been electrifying in his fights. We’re thrilled to bring a great show like this to Twin River and to showcase CES talent again on ESPN2 Friday Night Fights.”

Also on the undercard in a 6-rounder is light heavyweight “Irish” Joey McCreedy (7-2, 5 KOs), who’ll be seeking revenge against “Hurricane” Henry Mayes (7-5-1, 4 KOs), who beat McCreedy in a close decision on April 4.

Unbeaten, crowd-pleasing Johnston (RI) super middleweight Angel Camacho, Jr. (9-0, 4 KOs), the Latino Captain of Team CES, Lynn (MA) flyweight Isander Beauchamp (5-0, 2 KOs), and Italian-American favorite, Providence middleweight Richard “Bobo The Bull” Starnino (8-3-1, 1 KO), are all scheduled to fight opponents to be determined. All bouts and fighters are subject to change.

Tickets for “Ring Warriors” are priced at $25.00, $35.00, $50.00, (Bronze), $65.00 (Silver), $100.00 (Gold) and limited $150.00 (Jimmy’s Platinum Club) and are available to purchase by calling CES (401.724.2253/2254), going on line at www.cesboxing.com or www.twinriver.com, at the Twin River Event Center (100 Twin River Road, Lincoln, RI), or any TicketMaster location. Contact CES (401.724.2253/2254/www.cesboxing.com) or Twin River Events Center (877.82.RIVER/ www.twinriver.com) for more information. Doors open at 6 PM/ET, first bout at 7 PM/ET.

(Twin River has waived its 18+ rule for “Ring Warriors.” Anybody under the age of 18 must be accompanied at all times by an adult and they must enter through the West entrance.)

MMA Ushered Into AZ With Opening of Newest Lion’s Den Facility

Posted on | May 15, 2008 | No Comments

By: Holli Yargo Hearne

So supportive was Ken Shamrock of Arizona as a viable market for mixed martial arts, he not only assisted Representative Jonathan Paton in his efforts to sanction the sport in the state but is also opening his newest Lion’s Den facility there, as well. The new Den, at over 8,000 sq feet, is set to open on May 30. The legendary fighter is planning no ordinary grand-opening party, either. This grand opening is going to happen in grand style – with an infamous Lion’s Den tryout.

With respect to the new Den, the World’s Most Dangerous Man and his AZ staff have devised an all-new format for choosing their Scottsdale Lion’s Den Elite Team. Historically, Den tryouts were notoriously savage and not at all for the casual athlete; testing a hopeful’s stamina, heart, and tolerance for prolonged punishment. What the new format may lack in shear brutality will be more than made up for in fierce intensity. This time, candidates must have more than heart. With only 12 spots available for the new team, these candidates will have to prove they also have skills.

Those choosing to compete for one of the highly coveted spots had better come prepared. Skills and conditioning will be tested in a series of challenging drills that Shamrock has designed to pinpoint the very best. To ensure only the highest quality performers, the new format will be conducted elimination-style and promises to be extremely competitive.

The athletes with enough talent to earn a place on the elite team will have the chance to put their skills and training to the test in nationwide events against other top fighters. They will also enjoy training with expert coaches who are proven champions in their own right.

“The Lion’s Den is one of the most respected MMA fighting team organizations in the world. Fighters chosen for the Lion’s Den Elite Team will train with world renowned coaches, all champions and proven experts in their discipline,” says Scott Peters, Lion’s Den Partner and offensive center for the Arizona Cardinals. “Lion’s Den Scottsdale’s elite coaching staff includes Ken Shamrock, Bob Karmel, Rick “the Jet” Roufus, Edwin “Bam Bam” Dewees” and Chad Ikei, from Ikei Sports Performance.”

With a lengthy history of cultivating champions like Guy Mezger, Jerry Bohlander, Pete Williams, Mikey Burnett, Joe Hurley, and Vernon White, Shamrock is confident his new elite team will continue the Den legacy of winners.

“Lion’s Den Scottsdale fighters will have the best training, representation, and sponsorship opportunities available,” Shamrock explained. “We will also be holding our own Ken Shamrock Production (KSP) professional MMA events nationwide which provide the athlete the opportunity to put their skills and training to the test in premier MMA promotions. No MMA training center in Arizona can bring this caliber of training and exposure to their professional athletes.”

The Lion’s Den tryouts will be held June 1, at Lion’s Den Mixed Martial Arts Training Center located at 2954 N. Hayden Road in Scottsdale. For more information about the Lion’s Den Elite Team tryouts, contact the Elite Team recruiter, Lance Foreman, at lforeman@kshamrockprod.com or call (530) 252-8071.

PFC 8 FEATURES BELT CHANGING EVENTS

Posted on | May 14, 2008 | No Comments

Three belts change hands at
PFC 8’s “A night of Champions”

LEMOORE, Ca. — It might have been the greatest 10 seconds in Palace Fighting Championship history.

Featherweights Jorge Evangelista and Art Arciniega stood toe-to-toe throwing punches with the PFC World title on the line in the fifth and final round on May 8 at the Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino.

“It was a war in there,” said Fresno’s Evangelista, who edged former champ Arciniega of Oakdale by unanimous decision.

“I just wanted to show the fans a good fight. It’s not about winning, it’s about showing the fans that you’re a warrior.”

It could have been a huge mistake for Evangelista, who was easily ahead on the scorecards, to entice Arciniega (6-2) to slug it out in the final round.

Evangelista (7-2-1) controlled much of the fight, scoring in the early rounds with devastating knees and in the middle rounds with stiff leg kicks.

“I wanted to take his legs from him and reduce his power and you could see that in the last round he didn’t have the same power,” Evangelista said. “It feels good to have the belt, but I’m more happy with the showing and the respect that I earned tonight.”

Eleven other fighters earned much respect at PFC 8’s “A night of Champions”, which Comcast SportsNet TV announcer Andre Covington renamed “A night of the Challenger” midway through the show.

Three champions were dethroned and Porterville’s Shawn Klarcyk won the PFC World Bantamweight interim title by submitting Oregon’s Jason Georgianna.

Santa Rosa’s Nate Loughran (8-0) submitted Visalia’s Kenny Ento (9-4) in 2:30 of the second round of a middleweight title fight.

Loughran looked spectacular throughout the contest, pressed the action and submitted the ground specialist with a rear-naked choke.

“I didn’t really feel like I was a lot stronger than him like people keep saying,” said Loughran, who is a student of Ultimate Fighting Championship veteran David Terrell (6-2). “I think that people underestimate Kenny’s strength. He has a lot of leverage in the ring. But I think that I paced myself to go five rounds and he paced himself for two and I think he got a little tired.”

Loughran didn’t look the least bit winded and looks like a one-man wrecking crew in the middleweight division, as he won his third fight in the PFC.

“I just kept working his body and really never attempted anything to his head,” said Loughran, who dominated the first round, scoring a takedown early and got the better of the ground game.

“The one thing that we noticed about Kenny is that he is really good at his boxing or kickboxing or he is really good at jiu-jitsu, but he has a hard time in the transitions from one sport to the next,” Loughran said. “We wanted to catch him in those transitions and take advantage.”

Ento landed some solid leg kicks in the second round and took Loughran down, but Loughran was able to take Ento’s back and then sink the choke.

“I’m excited to be the champ and I will fight anyone that my team or the PFC deems necessary,” Loughran said.

In the main event, Bakersfield lightweight Brian Cobb (12-4) defeated Atlanta’s Diego Saraiva (11-7-1) by unanimous decision for the lightweight title.

Cobb locked up his second belt, as he owns the Gladiator Challenge lightweight title.
“I think that this belt kind of validates the other,” said Cobb, who dominated the fight with his top game, keeping Saraiva on his back and pounding out a win.

“We don’t want mediocrity in this sport. We are always training to fight the best and I think Diego was by far one of my toughest opponents yet.”

Saraiva was stuck on his back scrambling for submissions throughout the fight.

But it was Cobb’s excellent wrestling and solid submission defense that prevailed.

“I just wanted to fight smart and avoid his submissions,” Cobb said. “I’m comfortable on top.”

Klarcyk (8-2) captured bantamweight interim title by submitting Oregon’s Jason Georgianna (7-3) at 57 seconds of the second round.

Klarcyk exclusively and relentlessly attacked Georgiana’s legs.

“I saw a whole in his game where he didn’t close his guard,” said Klarcyk who previously held the title before losing Oakdale champ Rolando Velasco.

“I did exactly what we planned. I kept my distance, didn’t take any damage, got the takedown and submitted him.”
The first round was action packed with several scrambles.

Klarcyk took control in the second round, working a knee bar and then switching to a toehold to finish the fight.

“He wasn’t tapping from the knee bar, so I switched to a toe hold and I heard the ankle pop and he tapped,” Klarcyk said. “I just want to thank my beautiful wife and tell her happy anniversary. We’re going on three years strong.”

In other bouts:

—Huron lightweight Sergio Cortez (4-3) defeated Lemoore’s Poppies Martinez (15-5), by referee stoppage due to injury with three seconds left in the first round.

Martinez controlled the entire round, landing a solid leg kick before taking Cortez down, mounting him and sinking a tight guillotine choke.

In a scramble Cortez worked out and Martinez’ rib was injured.
—Oregon heavyweight Devin Cole (8-6) defeated Arizona’s Vince Lucero (18-14) by
technical knockout in 1:17 of the first round.

— Mexico lightweight Olaf Alfonso (7-8) knocked out Hesperia’s Chris Solomon (2-5) in 28 seconds of the first round.

— Fresno featherweight Casey Olson (7-2) submitted Lemoore’s Sergio Quinones (3-2) in 46 seconds of the first round.

— Sacramento lightweight Dustin Akabari (2-0) defeated Cody Canterbury (1-3) by technical knockout in 1:37 of the first round.

— Oxnard light heavyweight Lodune Sincaid (13-6) submitted Tulare’s Rafael Del Real (5-9) in 1:03 of the first round. Guillotine choke
— Sacramento bantamweight Joseph Benavidez (5-0) submitted Los Angeles’ Maurice Eazel (3-7) in 1:02 of the first round.

—Paradises lightweight Dan Russom (2-2) defeated Sacramento’s Thonglor Armatsena (1-1) by majority decision.
