Holm-Sanders headlines June 13 at Isleta Casino & Resort in Albuquerque
ALBUQUERQUE (May 7, 2008) – IBA junior flyweight champion Wendy “Little Thunder” Rodriguez will be seeking revenge June 13 when she fights one of only four opponents to ever defeat her, Hollie “Hot Stuff” Dunaway, in their 10-round bout for the vacant IBA strawweight belt on the “Finally” pay-per-view event, airing live (10 PM/ET-8 PM/MT) from Isleta Casino & Resort in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Rodriguez (18-4, 3 KOs), of Los Angeles, lost an eight-round decision March 15, 2007 to Dunaway (21-6, 10 KOs), the reigning WIBF-GBU/WIBC minimumweight title-holder and NABF flyweight champion, fighting out of Las Vegas by way of (Van Buren) Arkansas.
“I hadn’t fought in more than a year,” Wendy explained. “I thought we were fighting at 102-pounds, so I got down to that weight, but they upped it to 105, and then 107. I took the fight anyway but mentally I wasn’t into it. I was real rusty.”
“Finally,” promoted by Fresquez Productions, Inc., is being produced and distributed by Integrated Sports for live viewing in the United States and Canada (10 PM/ET) on both cable and satellite pay-per-view via iN Demand, TVN, Shaw Communications, DirecTV, Bell Expressvue and StarChoice for a suggested retail price of only $24.95.
The greatest collection of women boxers on one show, including five independently No. 1 rated fighters, are scheduled to battle in four world title bouts on “Finally.” The main event features the top two women boxers in the world today, Albuquerque favorite Holly “The Preacher’s Daughter” Holm (21-1-2, 6 KOs), recognized as the No. 1 welterweight in the world, versus the world’s No. 1 middleweight, Detroit icon Mary Jo Sanders (25-0, 8 KOs), squaring-off in the 10-round main event for the vacant IFBA junior middleweight crown and universal pound-for-pound supremacy.
Rodriquez has a degree in child development and she works in infancy relationship, making home visits for play therapy with needy children who are sick. Wendy is a 4’11” dynamo who is a true ring technician. “Hollie is a counter puncher, tough and really strong,” Rodriguez added. “It’s going to be an interesting match-up of styles. I’m really excited about fight on this pay-per-view show with some of the best woman fighters in the world. Normally, men fight on shows like this and maybe there’s one woman’s fight. Finally, we’re getting an opportunity like this and I think it’s going to take us to another level.”
WIBA & IBA junior lightweight title-holder Chevelle “Fists of Steel” Hallback (26-5-2, 11 KOs), fighting out of Tampa (FL), takes on WIBA featherweight champion Jeannine “G9” Garside (7-0-1, 3 KOs), of Ontario (Canada), in a 10-round bout for the vacant IFBA lightweight championship. Hallback-Garside has all the makings of a female version of Gatti-Ward.
WBC 2007 Fighter of the Year, WBC mininumweight champ Carina “La Reina” Moreno (11-1, 5 KOs), of Watsonville (CA), faces WIBA flyweight title-holder Eileen “The Hawaiian Mongoose” Olszewski (5-0-1), fighting out of New York City by way of Honolulu, in a 10-round fight for the IFBA junior flyweight crown. All fights and fighters are subject to change.
Tickets, priced at $50.00, $100.00, $150.00, $200.00, $350.00 and $500.00, are on sale March 18 at the Isleta Casino and Resort box office, www.tickets.com or at Fresquez Productions, Inc. Instant Classic? Mijares-Munoz Unification on PPV
Posted on | May 7, 2008 | No Comments
Salado-Miranda co-feature May 17 in Mexico
GOMEZ PALACIO, DURANGO, Mexico (May 7, 2008) – Styles make fights and the May 17 unification title bout between WBC champion Cristian Mijares and WBA title-holder Alexander “El Explosivio” Munoz has all the makings of an instant classic.
The 12-round Mijares-Munoz main event, marking the first super flyweight unification title bout in more than 10 years, headlines the “Noche de Campeones” pay-per-view event live from the Auditorio Centenario in Gomez Palacio, Durango, Mexico.
“Noche de Campeones,” promoted by KO Entertainment in association with DiBella Entertainment, will be produced and distributed by Integrated Sports for live viewing in the United States (9 PM/ET) on both cable and satellite pay-per-view via iN Demand, TVN, DirecTV and DISH Network, as well as on The Fight Network in Canada, for a suggested retail price of only $29.95.
The 12-round co-feature matches Mexican warriors Omar Salado and Julio Cesar “Pingo” Miranda in a WBC flyweight elimination bout.
“Unifying the super flyweight title is one of my first goals to be recognized as the best in my weight class,” Mijares said. “I’ve always desired to fight on a pay-per-view show and now it’s real. At the same time it is a big responsibility because so many boxing fans are going to be watching my performance. It’s an honor to fight before my people and I know millions of Mexicans will be watching me live on television.”
Mijares (34-3-2, 14 KOs) is a pure boxer with tremendous defensive boxing skills, while Munoz (32-2, 27 KOs) rates as a feared knockout specialist. Mijares captured the WBC Interim title on September 18, 2006 by 12-round split decision (114-113, 114-113, 113-114) against Katsushige Kawashima (30-4) in Japan. The slick Mexican southpaw successfully defended his WBC Interim belt the following November in Mexico, winning a 12-round unanimous decision (118-109, 117-110, 116-111) versus Reynaldo Lopez (28-3-2), and won his rematch for the WBC outright championship on January 3, 2007, stopping Kawashima (30-5) in the 10th round.
Mijares burst upon the global scene a year ago with an impressive, one-sided victory by unanimous 12-round decision (119-109, 118-110, 117-11) on PPV versus colorful Jorge “Travieso” Arce (46-4-1, 35 KOs) in San Antonio. Currently riding a 24-fight unbeaten streak with 23 wins and one draw, Mijares has made four successful title defenses since defeating Arce against, in order, Terrei Kikui (21-5) by 10th round TKO, Frank Gorrjux (16-7) in the opening round, and Jose Navarro (26-3) via a 12-round decision on February 16 in Las Vegas.
Venezuela-native Munoz is a 2-time WBA super flyweight champion, originally winning his title belt in 2002 with an eighth-round stoppage of Celes Kobayasho. Munoz made three winning title defenses against Eiji Kojima twice (KO2 and TKO10), sandwiched around a 12-round decision versus Hidenobu Honda (26-2), before losing a 12-round decision and his title belt to Martin Castillo (26-1) in 2004. Munoz won the WBA Fedelatin super flyweight crown in a WBA title eliminator, but Castillo won their 2006 rematch by 12-round split decision.
Munoz regained his WBA super flyweight title on May 3, 2007, taking a dominating 12-round decision from Nabuo Mashiro (9-0) in Japan. In a pair of title defenses, “El Explosivo” retained his belt with 12-round decisions against, respectively, Kuniyuki Aizawa (13-1-1) and Katsushige Kawasjima (32-6) this past January in Japan.
“Munoz is a dreaded knockout fighter and that’s why he’s a 2-time world champion,” Mijares noted. “All fights are different and I prepare myself 100-percent. I believe in my ability and also put myself in the hands of God. I believe it’s going to be a classic fight between a fighter and a puncher; a very tough, hard fight. I’m not looking ahead of this fight, but I’d like two or three more fights at this weight and then look at fighting for another world title at a higher weight.”
Undefeated former WBA Fedelatin super fIyweight champion Salado (19-0-2, 11 KOs) fought a 12-round draw with Ulises Solis (22-1-1) for the IBF light flyweight title in 2006. Salado is rated No. 4 by the WBC, No. 6 by The Ring, and No. 8 by the WBA. Miranda (25-3-1, 18 KOs) is ranked No. 3 by the WBC.
Unbeaten Japanese Koki Kameda (17-0, 11 KOs), former WBA light flyweight title-holder and current WBA No. 1 flyweight contender, is scheduled to fight in a 10-round PPV bout against an opponent to be determined. Kameda is also ranked No. 2 by the WBC, No. 9 by the WBO and The Ring.
Also scheduled to fight on the live undercard are other tough Mexican boxers such as middleweight Martin “Azteca” Avila against Alberto Hernandez in a 10-round match-up, as well as lightweights Ricardo “Camaleon” Mijares (9-0, 8 KOs) and Arturo Mijares (5-1, 4 KOs), and welterweight Ivan “El Ruso” Pereyra (1-0, 1 KO). All bouts and fighters are subject to change.

INTERNATIONAL FIGHT LEAGUE’S STARK SELECTS WINES THAT “PACK A PUNCH” FOR MOTHER’S DAY

Vineyard Manager, Mixed Martial Arts Standout, Mensa Member Recommends Four Vintages
NEW YORK and PORTLAND, Ore., May 7, 2008 – As a professional mixed martial arts fighter and manager of Colene Clemens Vineyard (Ore.), Aaron Stark of Portland knows a thing or two about wines with a little bit of punch that are perfect for Mother’s Day. Stark, a light heavyweight who will compete next Friday, May 16, at the International Fight League event at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn., offers up these knockout choices:
• Didier Dagenau – this Sauvignon Blanc is the Featherweight of the bunch, very light and perfect for this time of year, and often preferred by women, especially moms
• Beaux Freres – a Pino Noir from an Oregon vineyard with floral characteristics. It’s the lightweight of wines, more feminine and fun
• Soter Vineyards Sparkling Wine – The Jiu-Jitsu of wines, it may look tame but look out for this deceptive vintage that packs a serious sting if you’re not careful
• JJ Prum – a German Riesling, Mom will enjoy grappling with this exceptionally sweet wine which is still serious and complex

Former training partners now fighting for PFC gold
Posted on | May 7, 2008 | No Comments
LEMOORE, Ca. — When Art Arciniega looks across the Palace Fighting Championship ring on Thursday, the Oakdale mixed martial artist will see a rather familiar face.
“We used to train at the same gym in Fresno years back,” the PFC World Featherweight Champion said of his challenger Fresno’s Jorge Evangelista (6-2-1).
“I know that he’s a well rounded fighter with experience,” Arciniega (6-1) added.
The pair will help headline PFC 8’s “A Night of Champions” on Thursday at the Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino in Lemoore where four PFC World titles will be on the line.
“I’m kind of excited to be fighting for the belt, but at the same time kind of uncomfortable that it’s against Art,” said Evangelista, who fought to a decision victory against Oregon’s Enoch Wilson (10-4-1) in March.
“I really like Art and the way he fights. We always talk and we both have a lot of respect for each other.”
Arciniega defeated Oroville’s Shawn Bias (12-6) for the belt in January by submission in the fourth round.
“I think Art is a very under rated fighter. He has a great chin and I think he’s a lot more polished on the ground than people give him credit for,” PFC President Christian Printup said. “He’s hungry even as the champion. He knows to be the champ is one thing, but to hold on to the championship is when things start to happen for you.
“Jorge is definitely one of the most talented fighters in the 145-pound division. He had an extremely tough fight with Wilson to earn the No. 1 contender spot. He’s taken this fight seriously and like the fight of his life. Jorge is some one who has always fought and trained in his spare time. And in some respects got by on natural ability, but I know this fight he’s taken the time to be at his best,” Printup added.
It should be one of the more action-packed fights of the night.
“I have respect for Jorge and his skills. He definitely deserves a shot at the title. I love wearing that belt, though, and I’m prepared to do what I need to keep it,” Arciniega said. “I believe it’s going to be a great fight with two men willing too stand toe-to-toe and leave it all in the ring.”
Both fighters can excel wherever the fight ends up. Both have great standup and excellent ground skills.
“Art is a very scrappy fighter. I really had a hard time submitting him when we trained together. I know that was a long time ago and we have both come a long way since then,” Evangelista said. “Art comes from that boxing background, but I’m not sure if the fight will stay standing. Everyone knows that my jiu-jitsu is awesome, but I haven’t really been pushed to use it yet. I think that I’m the better wrestler and that’s probably my strength. I really don’t see Art trying to sub me, I don’t think that will happen.”
In the three other title fights, Atlanta’s Diego Saraiva (11-6-1) will defend his lightweight title for the first time against Bakersfield’s Brian Cobb (11-4); Visalia’s Kenny Ento (9-3) defends his middleweight title against Santa Rosa’s Nate Loughran (7-0); and Porterville’s Shawn Klarcyk (7-2) will fight Oregon’s Jason Georgianna (7-2) for the interim bantamweight championship.
There are less than 100 tickets left and they can be purchased at tickets.com or charge by phone at 1-800-225-2277. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and fights start at 6:30.
In other bouts;
—Lemoore lightweight Poppies Martinez (15-4) vs. Huron’s Sergio Cortez (3-3)
—Oregon heavyweight Devin Cole (7-6) vs. Arizona’s Vince Lucero (18-13)
—Oxnard light heavyweight Lodune Sincaid (12-6) vs. Tulare’s Rafael Del Real (5-8)
—Sacramento lightweight Dustin Akabari (1-0) vs. Los Angeles’ Cody Canterbury (1-2)
—Sacramento bantamweight Joseph Benavidez (4-0) vs. Los Angeles’ Maurice Eazel (3-6)
—Sacramento lightweight Thonglor Armatsena (1-0) vs. Susanville’s Dan Russum (1-2)
—Lemoore featherweight Sergio Quinones (2-1) vs. Fresno’s Casey Olson (6-2)
—Mexico lightweight Olaf Alfonso (6-8) vs. Hesperia’s Chris Soloman (2-4)

We’ll be back in the Brute Adidas studios this week for another show filled with guests, news and information about this sport. To all of you who have signed up for the Pod casts thank you! Wow, what a successful idea that was. Technology always amazes me. I’m grateful to all of you who listen.
Intermatwrestle.com’s Jason Bryant joins us a special guest co-host for this broadcast.
This week on TDR-
Brad Penrith- Head Coach of the Panthers of University of Northern Iowa joins us to give us an update at UNI and on Olympic Trial bound Tolly Thompson. Thompson is looking for what might be his last trial ever and would sure like to go out on top.
Jake Herbert- Northwestern University’s Jake Herbert qualified for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials by winning the 185-pound division at the University National Freestyle Championships last weekend. Herbert was named Most Outstanding Wrestler and was one of four Wildcats to place in the tournament. In the finals, the 2007 NCAA champion at 184 lbs. defeated Iowa State’s David Bertolino of the Cyclone WC, 2-0, 1-0. Herbert had three victories during the final day including a three-period win over Matt Pell of Cavalier WC in the second round. Herbert took an Olympic redshirt year from the Wildcats last season and has been competing in many international events. He wanted one more tournament before the U.S. Nationals coming up in two weeks in Las Vegas. “I got in a good test, wrestled good matches and know what my strengths and weaknesses are,” Herbert said. “I also got my qualification for Olympic Trials. It now doesn’t matter what I do at U.S. Nationals if I win Olympic Trials. That is what I have been working so hard for.”
The next event for Herbert in his quest to qualify for the Olympics is the U.S. Nationals, April 23-26. The winner of the U.S. Nationals becomes the No. 1 seed at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials. The top three finishers in each weight at the trials are named to the U.S. National Team. The U.S. Olympic Team Trials take place June 13-15 in Las Vegas. NU had three other All-Americans in the tournament. Mike Tamillow took true second at 211.5 lbs. and Ryan Lang was second at 145.5 lbs. Mike Benefiel, who redshirted last season and will be a starter for the ‘Cats in 2008-09, finished fifth at 174 lbs.
John Stutzman- Head Coach Coach Bloomsburg University- 3rd year going in to 4th year. John was able to produce his 2nd All American in Matt Moley (157lbs). Along with Coach Carl Fronhoefer Stutzman has been able to bring this program along very quickly and has recently received the keys to a brand new wrestling only facility off-campus dedicated to the advancement of Bloomsburg Wrestling.
Dalton Folkerts- This little dynamo AAU wrestler from Albia, Iowa is a true testament to what a wrestler can be. Dalton took 1st A 75 in 2007 and went 11-1 on the season to earn 1st place honors on the box at vets auditorium this last year. What a ride its been for this young man. Now I’m going to warn you, this young man speaks his mind and exposes his heart. Medals and trophies mean very little to this youngster with a much high vision. Tune in and find out what I mean…..
Greg Strobel- Outgoing Head Coach of Lehigh University. Greg is quite possibly one of the nicest men I’ve ever met. Warm, Giving, Understanding, Trusting, one hell of a coach and one great teacher. It’s understandable that when he moves to his new position that one of his own, an alumnus of Lehigh would leave a very high profile position at Maryland to move back and take the spot of his mentor, teacher and friend. Greg will join us to describe his new duties, and maybe a bit of reflection on the last few years. Remarkable is one word I can and do use in describing Greg Strobel.
Lehigh University has named Pat Santoro its new Lawrence E. White ‘64 Head Coach of Wrestling, Goodman Dean of Athletics Joe Sterrett ’76 announced Tuesday. Santoro, who becomes just the eighth head coach in the 99-year history of Lehigh wrestling, replaces Greg Strobel who will be making the transition into an administrative leadership role within the Lehigh Athletics Department. This announcement marks the return to Lehigh for Santoro, a Bethlehem native who spent nine seasons at Lehigh as an assistant coach.
“Greg Strobel was ready for a new assignment outside of coaching and he is very well skilled and suited for working with our camps program and in our athletics alumni relations and fund raising areas,” said Sterrett. “Pat Santoro was an outstanding assistant coach at Lehigh for nine years, and has done a magnificent job in developing the Maryland program. He will bring a deep affection for the institution, the educational values we prioritize, and the ability to make the transition seamless.”
Each week through the year we do our level best to provide for our sport through our programming. We do welcome suggestions. Know of an athlete, a coach or a friend of wrestling that deserves or needs some recognition? Let me know. Email me at Svideoman@aol.com. I welcome calls and emails. Thanks for listening and thanks to our sponsors who for years have understood the bigger picture.
