Emery-Nickel Clash Added to FSN Best Damn Championship Fight Night Period Card June 12 at Mohegan Sun

Posted on | May 6, 2008 | No Comments

HENDERSON, Nevada (May 6, 2008) – An compelling match between middleweights Jill Emery and Cristy “Code Red” Nickel has been added to the already exciting and competitive Fox Sports Net’s Best Damn Championship Fight Night Period card, headlined by a pair of International Female Boxers Association (IFBA) world championship bouts, on Thursday, June 12 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.

Best Damn Championship Fight Night Period, presented by Cappiello Boxing in association with Hollybrook Regency, Inc., features IFBA World junior featherweight champion Lisa “Bad News” Brown (14-3-3, 4 KOs) defending her crown against Alicia “Slick” Ashley (14-7-1, 1 KO) in the 10-round main event, plus Russian invader Anastasia Toktaulova (12-8, 2 KOs) challenging IFBA World flyweight champion Elena “Baby Doll” Reid (19-4-5, 5 KOs) in the 10-round co-feature.

Emery (8-2, 3 KOs) and Nickel (7-6, 4 KOs) have a lot in common, including historic roles played in fights overseas. Both are college graduates from middle class backgrounds and physical training instructors who live in New York City. Jill works and trains at the famed Gleason’s Gym in Brooklyn, where Cristy often spars, yet, they’ve never met in person.

Pittsburgh-native Emery, a graduate of Bucknell University, is a 3-time US Nationals champion, who also captured top honors four years in the New York Daily News Golden Gloves Championship, won a gold medal in the 2004 Women’s World Boxing Tournament, and was named 2004 USA Boxing’s Female Athlete of the Year. As a pro, Jill was the winner of the first women’s pro fight in Ireland last June by eight-round decision versus Angel McKenzie in a shutout performance, winning all eight rounds on the scorecard.

Nickel was born in California but raised on a farm in Northern Idaho. The U. of Memphis graduate was one of only six Americans fighters invited to fight in 2005 on a card in Beijing, China.

Cristy was contacted in 2006 by producers of MTV’s hit reality show “MADE,” who were searching for a boxing coach to turn a lazy high school quitter into a hard-hitting boxer in only six weeks. Nickel auditioned with coaches from all over the country and after an intense and lengthy screening process, she was offered the position, and the episode was chosen as the season premier, continuing to re-run to date in more than 60 countries. The success of the show afforded Cristy an opportunity to move to New York City, where she started her own business as a personal trainer and boxing coach at “Peak Performance,” New York’s exclusive private training facility for the stars, including her personal clients such as Katie Couric.

Trinidad and Tobago-born Brown, a three-time world champion now fighting out of Toronto, Canada, takes on three-time world champion Ashley, who is from Jamaica and living in Westbury, New York. Las Vegas-based Reid fights former European super flyweight and bantamweight champion Toktaulova, representing Moscow.

On the undercard, Las Vegas unbeaten star Melinda Cooper (18-0, 10 KOs) starts her comeback after nearly 18 months of inactivity versus knockout specialist Donna “Nature Girl” Biggers (19-7-1, 16 KOs), of Shelby, North Carolina, in a special six-round junior featherweight bout. Junior featherweight contender Jeri Stizes (14-7-1, 6 KOs), of Springfield, Missouri, faces tough Ela “Bam Bam” Nunez (6-3, 2 KOs), fighting out of Jamestown, New York, in another highly competitive six-rounder.

Tickets are priced at $10.00, $25.00 and $40.00 and on sale at the Mohegan Sun box office or online at www.mohegansun.com.

Go to www.ifba.com for more information. The undercard will start a 7 PM/ET, followed by the first of three scheduled televised bouts beginning at 8 PM/ET.

UFC STARTING TO RESEMBLE SURVIVOR: MORE FIGHTERS VOTED OFF THE ISLAND

Posted on | May 6, 2008 | 1 Comment

By: Rich Bergeron

Although the UFC maintains it is slimming down their roster to “assure fighters can be scheduled more frequently and to avoid long layoffs between fights” the recent torch snuffing of Din Thomas, Tommy Speer, and Kuniyoshi Hironaka seems to be yet another sign of the organization neglecting to put their fighters first. MMAJUNKIE put out an in-depth report on the situation recently, and the story points out that the castoff brawlers all lost recent fights.

The message seems to be: win or go home, literally. It’s as if the situation this season’s TUF contestants faced when they had to fight their way into the house is part of a new winner take all attitude among UFC decision makers that’s now being applied to the league as a whole. For some recently dismissed UFC fighters, the disrespectful aspect of being told to clean out their lockers was enough to get them to come out in the public eye and squawk about mistreatment and unfavorable terms of employment.

Absent the big sponsor deals the top names get, the UFC’s contract situations often leave the average fighter footing all the bills for training and medical treatment.

Travis Lutter went as far as reporting that he e-mailed Dana White asking for his 36,000 bucks in past-due sponsor money from Xyience.

Kalib Starnes found himself surrounded by a media circus when he fought one of the worst fights of his life recently. He’s felt compelled to set the record straight about his raw UFC deal in recent weeks. He insists he tried to back out of the crooked contract himself before Dana White ragged on him in public and announced his release from the league.

The MMA Junkie article points out other casualties of the past month including Joe Doerksen, Charles McCarthy, and Jake O’Brien. They go on to report, “Additionally, numerous cast members from “The Ultimate Fighter 6” were cut earlier this year, and the majority of cast members from the current season of “TUF” will be released from the organization next month.”

Add to the situation the harsh words and lawsuits launched at the organization from well-known UFC fighters who decided to leave the league publicly and voluntarily (Randy Couture, Tito Ortiz, Tim Sylvia) and it seems there’s more than meets the eye to the numerous claims that the UFC is not very fighter friendly. The exclusive contracts of the league and all the restrictions put on fighters can’t be healthy in the long run with other MMA leagues starting to make headway and new ones still popping up.

Affliction’s league is about to kick off their first event, EliteXC’s got the CBS deal to gloat about, and Mark Cuban’s HDNet fights isn’t going away anytime soon. It’s one thing to demand so much from your employees when there’s no other suitable place for them to work, but when there’s this much competition around that’s more open to compromise and providing star treatment for all it’s a bad move on the part of the UFC to make any waves that might inspire even more fighter discontent.

On the other hand, the fact that there are so many competing leagues now makes the UFC’s recent fighter cuts a bit more forgivable since at least each released fighter will have plenty of opportunities to keep working for comparable pay.

At any rate, there’s no doubt the show will go on. There’s no evidence yet that any of this competition is really hurting the UFC’s bottom line and popularity. It might be making a dent in some respects, but any losses sustained aren’t catastrophic, and predictions of the UFC’s imminent demise are surely premature.

For every Din Thomas, Tommy Speer, and Kuniyoshi Hironaka there are a hundred other guys itching to take their places and willing to fight just for the exposure and the glory. So all you folks out there saying the CBS deal is the beginning of the end of the UFC as the all-powerful oracle, you just keep waiting for the mother ship to come take you away when the Hale Bopp Comet appears in the night sky.

TRAVIS LUTTER WANTS HIS XYIENCE MONEY!!

Posted on | May 5, 2008 | No Comments

By: Rich Bergeron

Recently dissed and dismissed UFC Fighter Travis Lutter is reportedly looking for the sponsorship money Xyience stiffed him out of, $36,000 of it to be exact. Apparently he’s e-mailed Dana White about the situation, and CAGEPOTATO.COM wrote a whole report about Lutter’s payment request.

Lutter, listed as a creditor in the Xyience Bankruptcy case along with several other unpaid UFC fighters, is really the first person since Drew Fickett and Sean Sherk to come out in public and rail about not getting paid by the supplement company. Most fighters have simply taken it on the chin or just decided to take their chances in court and not risk pissing Dana off. Some have simply just admitted they haven’t been paid and left it at that.

Perhaps the most ridiculous aspect of the whole unpaid fighter situation is that despite reports that all these Xyience-sponsored fighters haven’t been paid, the XYIENCE FIGHTERS PAGE still lists them all as sponsored fighters. I’ve raised this issue multiple times in court paperwork, and nothing changes. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised considering the amount of fraud they’ve been wrapped up in.

The fact that Lutter is seeking his money from Dana rather than Xyience itself is telling to say the least, especially considering all that stuff I’m getting sued for revolving around my reports of Dana’s unholy alliance with Xyience. Keep your fingers crossed, Travis, and someday maybe your ship will come in. If you don’t get the dough, I’m working on a way to get it for you by filing a Civil RICO Act case against all the main players and on behalf of all the creditors and shareholders who have been screwed, which includes a long list of fighters. Stay tuned for more on that front.

KIMBO MAKING MAJOR MMA WAVES

Posted on | May 5, 2008 | No Comments

By: Rich Bergeron
Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson is the new big fish in the small MMA pond that represents those leagues outside the UFC that are starting to pick up some speed. Though the UFC and all their fighters still remain wildly popular, Slice and EliteXC seem to be making the most significant inroads in the media these days. First EliteXC signed their CBS deal to rock the boat and then Kimbo landed a spot on the cover of ESPN Magazine recently.

Despite the massive wave of fame Kimbo’s riding, not everyone’s in his corner. ESPN Writer and Contributor LZ Granderson recently launched a diatribe against Kimbo’s attitude toward his new found star status. There’s been plenty of other chatter in the press about Kimbo’s unproven skills, and it’s one of those topics fans love to debate. Even in his YouTube street fighting days Kimbo fought a few slobs here and there who just couldn’t hang, but now he’s in a whole new world. The fact that he hasn’t yet fought a truly high-caliber opponent who could truly test his cage fighting ability is simply a matter of him being too new to the format. Kimbo’s Trainer Bas Rutten talked with MMACANADA.NET recently and asked for the blame to be laid on his shoulders regarding Kimbo’s opponents to this point.

Chuck Liddell, the only other MMA star to grace the cover of ESPN The Magazine so far, reached the pinnacle of his fame at the same time as MMA itself and the UFC. The hype leading up to the Liddell vs. Rampage Jackson fight was huge, although the fight itself proved to be a disaster for Liddell. It took Chuck a few fights to regroup and get back to winning after that embarrassing knockout. Who knows if Kimbo’s recent MMA fame will have the same effect, but the difference is Kimbo is fresh and new. He’s a man of few words and once admitted to me in a conference call that he’s honestly in the fight game for “the paper,” A.K.A. THE MONEY. To make more money in any sport, you have to first prove you’re a winner, and that’s what he’s trying to do the smart way.

So, although the press crowning him as the unofficial king of today’s MMA scene may be misguided, it’s definitely not out of the realm of possibility that he’s on his way to becoming the best there is. He’s huge, imposing, and exceptionally good with his hands. Though he’s never had to really prove anything on the ground yet, his time will come to demonstrate that Bas Rutten’s got that covered. We can only wait for that moment when he does find himself on his back pulling guard to see whether he can really hack it in this sport. There will also be a time when EliteXC realizes they have to feed him better opponents in order to prevent the fans and the press from wondering whether this guy’s the real deal or just another overblown fad.

The promise of what Kimbo represents may be of greater value to the sport right now than anything Kimbo has already done in MMA, and that’s partly due to the fact that he looks the part of the second coming of Mike Tyson. Even Bas Rutten compared the two in the interview with MMACANADA.NET, referencing the fact that Tyson fought about 20 tomato can opponents before he fought anyone who might challenge him. Kimbo won’t fight that many guys before going up against someone formidable, says Bas, but the chances of Kimbo running into his own personal Buster Douglas will be slim in the early going.

If you’re a fan of Kimbo you can only hope that his ego doesn’t get too swollen too soon. He’s as tough a talker as he is a fighter, and he’s already called out Liddell. Yet, if he really is doing all this for the money, I wonder why he hasn’t laced up the boxing gloves yet and gone into a boxing ring if only for an exhibition or a trial run at operating in both sports. Having already invoked a Tyson-esque presence in the cage, he would be an absolute beast in a boxing ring. Looking at the other heavyweights in boxing compared to Wladimir Klitschko it looks like nobody’s in any position to challenge the Russian for his coveted world championship belts. If Kimbo jumped into the mix with a few tune up fights in boxing he’d be ready to face a guy like Sam Peter in no time. If he could take out Peter, he’d be set up for a super bout with Klitschko that could break all boxing records as far as paydays go. Heck, even a fight with the big lumbering giant Valuev would sell a ton of tickets.

Kimbo might be getting the star treatment way too soon, but you simply have to recognize the guy’s natural talent before drawing any conclusions on how he’ll fare in the fight game. It’s possible he might not live up to expectations, but that’s a risk he’s willing to take, and in this writer’s opinion it doesn’t seem likely that he’ll fall short of his goals the way things have been going for him to this point.

MORE ON KIMBO:

From Street … to Elite …. to “E:60” … again ….

The excellent “E:60” feature on EliteXC’s incredibly popular, legendary street-fighting YouTube sensation and Mixed Martial Arts superstar, Kimbo Slice, will be repeated this Tuesday, May 6, on ESPN. The multi-subject newsmagazine show starts at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT.

Kimbo will headline the first-ever MMA primetime broadcast on network television when “CBS ELITEXC SATURDAY NIGHT FIGHTS” premieres with a five-fight card Saturday, May 31, on the CBS Television Network (9 p.m.-11 p.m. ET/PT). The event will originate from the Prudential Center at Newark, N.J.
