DE LA HOYA VS FORBES LOS ANGELES
PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES
Tuesday, February 26, 2008

RICHARD SCHAEFER, CEO GOLDEN BOY PROMOTIONS

“Oscar made it happen that he will be fighting at the Home Depot Center in front of all of these fans. He could have been paid much more and it’s really a tribute to all the fans and Oscar made that happen. And on behalf of the fans, I want to personally thank you Oscar for doing this for the fans.

“We are going to have food stations, live entertainment in between bouts, new field boxes, for special VIPs, a great night and an unbelievable night of boxing.

“Tickets go on sale a week from today and they are expecting sellout. Oscar fights always sellout and this will be no different. Also tickets start at $25. When was the last time someone could see an Oscar de la Hoya fight for $25.

“The fans are going to have a ball. Going back to what it is all about and this is Oscar’s gift to the fans.”

JEFF WALD

“This is part of a long history for Oscar, one the last great superstars in boxing.

“We’re here in Hollywood, and actually now Stevie just got his own Oscar”

STEVE FORBES

“Today’s my birthday and what a great present. My last two fights have been with Golden Boy and they have treated me like a Champion the entire time.

“I considered myself a hardcore boxing fans fighter and since the beginning of my career, I was taken in my the Mayweathers and they taught me everything I know. Even though I will now be on the other side of the ring from Floyd SR, who I think of like an uncle, but I will have Roger in my corner so there is still a part of the Mayweather family, who knows everything about boxing.

“I want to thank Oscar for giving me a shot. He could have picked a million guys for this fight and he picked me. I don’t consider myself as the “tune-up” opponent and I will be in the best shape of my life and prepared to win. This is a dream come true and I am going to take the opportunity, relish it and be a winner May 3rd.

“I am going to fight hard and WIN”

FLOYD MAYWEATHER SR

“First of all, there will be no poems today as I really like and respect Stevie Forbes.

“More importantly, it’s a great feeling to be back with Oscar. I am excited to be able to add to his great legacy. It’s strange to be against one of my former pupils and I was with him for a long time. I was with him when he won the world title. But now I have a job to do and that is to help Oscar win another big fight so he can has the opportunity to rematch my son in September.”

OSCAR DE LA HOYA

“Always I want to thank the media first and everyone that is here today. It is an honor to be here, and it just feels like a culmination of years of hard work, dedication and all the fights I have had. Now I am back home and part of this great event.

“I feel as though it’s Steve Forbes who is giving me the opportunity. He might be from the Contender but actually I am a contender now. I am not a champion so I am coming to fight as hard as I can.

“I am not going to fall for the “tune-up” talk either. I’ve been down that road before and so I look at this fight as one of the most serious fights of my career.

“Floyd Sr. is back and it feels good and comfortable to have him with me. The way we prepare together is key to my success. There is no doubt about that either. We are going to train in Big Bear, train there, back to where it started too. The whole team is going there to get ready.

“I am going to fight three times this year and I feel I have to go back to hard work, dedication, and to re-organize myself. Everything is riding on this and I am totally preparing myself for the schedule ahead. It all starts here.

“Of course I want to give back and we are fighting here at Home Depot Stadium, 32,000 fans cheering us on and cheering on and supporting the sport of boxing. There are 20,000 seats @ $75 or less. I decided that that is how it was going to be. I want all the fans to enjoy themselves and this isn’t about the money for me. It is about giving back.

“Giving back is what it’s all about for that weekend”

Calzaghe, Maccarinelli and Rees.

“ Welsh dragons… can they do it?”

BY: GARY TODD

When these three fighters are out running the roads and the miles, pushing themselves to the limits, through the rugged Welsh valley’s, they call home, nothing else matters, nothing else is entertained, and nothing will change their thoughts. Only winning and victory.

Three fighters, three Welshmen, three champions, with three different destinies.

As the fighters each train for the hardest fights of their careers, the people of Wales go about their businesses as usual, but something is different. Boxing is all the talk of the towns, throughout the valley’s. People in the butchers, the bakers, the farms and the factories, all talking about their favourite sons. Not since Steve Robinson’s fight with Hamed, or Johnny Owen’s domestic scraps, or even when Thatcher shut the doors of the mines for the last time, has there been so much talk of fighting .

With Gavin Rees defending his hard fought, newly won WBA junior welterweight title against the tremendously experienced and tough boxer, Andreas Kotelnik, and Enzo Maccarinelli fighting in a unification dust up with the big punching mobile banger, David Haye, and Joe Calzaghe finally hooking up, to risk his own legacy against Bernard Hopkins, these three men deserve to be spoken of.

As far as things go, each man will have his toughest night ahead, but in saying that, it could also be the greatest night of their lives thus far.

Victory is everything.

Looking ahead to Rees’s fight with Kotelnik, [ W28- kos 12, -L2 D1. ] he will be facing a strong, come forward technical boxer who had a brilliant , 135 – 15 amateur career, winning the silver medal in the 2000 olympics, and a fighter who has never been stopped. If that’s not enough, then throw in, he has a great defence which usually means he goes the distance. All in all, Kotelnik is always going to be a tough night out.

David Haye. [ W20 kos 19. – L1. ] Big puncher, mobile, and dangerous with the right hand. Like Kotelnik, Haye tasted success in the amateurs, winning the silver medal at the 2001 world championships, before turning pro in 2002, and blasting out everyone he faced. He seems to struggle to make the cruiserweight limit, with stamina, and a suspect chin, as well as carrying his left hand far too low, all being the chinks in his armour. He is a tremendous finisher though, and if he hurts you, it’s goodnight Irene !

Hopkins. [ W48. kos 32.- L4.] Well now he is a one in a million. Loud, talks way too much, but without doubt, he knows his way around the fight game. Fighter, promoter, commentator, self proclaimed legend, and the record to prove it.

Can these Welsh Dragons do it?

Gavin Rees [ W27. – kos 13.- L0.] has been fighting as a pro since 1998, fighting 4 to 6 rounders, before building up to fight for the WBO intercontinental featherweight title in 2001. After winning that title, and defending it, he went back to fighting at 6 and 8 round fights. In July, 2007, he stepped up big time, to fight the WBA champion, Souleymane M’baye for his light welterweight title and fought hard to snatch it away, winning on points. Rees will have to outwork Kotelnik to win. It’s a fifty fifty fight, and it will probably go to the scorecards. Experience could be a major factor in the fight, with all the experience at the higher level going to the man from the Ukraine. “The Rock” will have to be at is very best to hold on to his title.

Enzo Maccarinelli and David Haye can only mean one thing. Knockout. On paper, this is going to be a brutal fight, as long as it lasts. Both men have power. Enzo has power in both fists, and both men have been taken out. This is a huge fight for the both of them, as the winner will become an overnight millionaire, with the winner opening the doors to big money, mega fights in America. To win, the man from Swansea, will have to get through some scary moments in the first 6 rounds, as that’s when Haye is at his most dangerous. In the Jean Marc Mormeck fight, Haye was almost stopped in the fourth, but showed championship grit, to come back and stop “ The Marksman” in the 7th round to unify the cruiserweight division. As I commented before, Haye carries his left hand way too low and Maccarinelli should have a field day. “Big Mac” by ko.

Joe Calzaghe and Bernard Hopkins is a fight which should have happened years ago. Hopkins is 43, and is 20 years as a professional prize fighter. I don’t care what anyone says, Hopkins legs will go in this fight. I predict that Calzaghe will use the ring, use his jab and counter in flurries. Hopkins will want to hold, grab Calzaghe’s arms inside, and try to steal the rounds, by spoiling , and fighting ugly, possibly hitting Calzaghe in the back of the head. Hopkins is a technical boxer and uses every trick he knows to win. He does carry his left hand low, and if Calzaghe stings him with his southpaw right hand jab, followed by a straight left, then right hook to Hopkins body, then I feel he can take “The Executioners “legs away. Calzaghe’s pressure with the jab, must be paramount, and he has to step off to the right all night long. If he does, he will win on points.

Gary Todd is the best selling author of “Workouts From Boxing’s Greatest Champs” and he has been involved in all aspects in the sport of boxing, for over 25 years. He is also a proud member of the Boxing writers association of America. Look out for his new book on world champions “Workouts Volume II” COMING SOON.

EUROPEAN BOXING NEWS

Posted on | February 27, 2008 | No Comments

February 23, Halle an der Saale, Gemany:

Ukrainian lightheavy Yuri Barashian won the EBU title with an eighth round stoppage of Thomas Ulrich, the defending champion. Ulrich was hurt by a bodydshot late in fifth, floored three times in the seventh from the very same southpaw left hooks to the liver region.

Early in the eighth Barashian floored Ulrich again with that left hook and it was waved over at 0.56 as Thomas got up. It was a tough fight from the start and developed into a wild punchup as the German, sensing the fight was slipping away from him, opened up with both hands. Barashian was hard to catch though and Ulrich kept missing with an alarming number of punches.

After seven it was scored 66-65 and 67-63 for Barashian and 66-66. The judges were split on the
seventh round as well scoring it 10-6, 10-7 and 10-8.

Russian cruiser Aleksander Alekseev again impressed in retaining the WBO I/C title with a stoppage of American Talmadge Griffin, who was retired by his corner after the second round. Griffin was down twice in the first and hurt in the second.

Supermiddle Dmitri Sartison stopped Argentinian Pablo Daniel Zamora Nieves at 1.46 of the eighth of a scheduled non-title ten rounder.

Welter Oliver Guettel won a close call over Spaniard Juan Martinez Bas over eight.

Czech jr middle Lukas Konecny knocked out Kimfuta Makassu in the second with a left hook to the body.

Colombian cruiser Santander Silgado moved 12-0 (12) with a second round stoppage of Brit John Anthony. Silgado looked pretty green though and must have been close to a DQ loss after a blatant low blow in the first. Anthony bent over, and then sat down with Salgado punching on his floored opponent.

Gomez vs Virchis update: “Everything you read on the internet this far has been wrong” said Universum´s CEO Dietmar Poszwa. “We will put out a statement next week. But both men asked for time to prepare and we will get them that.” September 27 seems like the likely date which is sure to leave both fighters unhappy.

Cruiser Marco Huck returns to action April 12 in Neubrandenburg in a supporting bout to Sebastian Sylvester vs Javier Castillejo and Cristian Sanavia vs Karo Murat. Huck lost to IBF champ Steve Cunningham late December in a very tough fight but took only a few weeks off before getting back to the gym.

EBU jr middle champ Zaurbek Baysangurov defends the title against fellow Ukrainian Roman Dzhuman March 23 in Dnepropetrovsk.

Check out the new CD from Paul Thorn, “A long Way from Tupelo”. Thorn once fought Roberto Duran going 16-3-1 in the pros.

Trainer Ulli Wegner and his star pupil, Sven Ottke, are back together with the aim of getting Sven in top shape for the showdown against Dariusz Michalczewski May 24 in Hannover.

Polish welter Slavomir Ziemlewicz is off the planned WBA I/C fight against Vyacheslav Senchenko March 25 due to what appears to be legal problems.

Talented middle Gennadyi Golovkin face South African Tshepo Mashego on February 29 in Hamburg. Dieter Roth fight Portugese Humberto Evora while Sebastian Kober is in against Brit Paul Butlin, heavyweights.

Cuban heavy Odlanier Solis get an easy win on Friday in Milan against Hungarian Adrian Rajkai but will fight again March 14 in Munich against tba.

French cruiser Jean Marc Monrose, who challenge EBU champ Johny Jensen May 3, tunes up March 8 in Metz. The show is topped by female jr welter Ann Sophie Mathis in a WBA, WIBF, WBC and UBC titlefight against Panamian Ana Pascal. Bantam Jerome Arnould is still without opponent for his planned EU championship bout.

The next round of the “Grand Tornoi” presented by AMI Production at the Cirque d´Hiver in Paris March 27 feature Morrad Hakkar vs Didier Mupeko and Robert Roselia vs Amar Amari. In the headliner Francois Bastient defends the French middleweight title against Thierry Karl.

Italian jr middle veteran Michele Orlando take on Julio Caesar Chaves Jr April 26 in Queretero, Mexico.

Pro Box Austria have their Argentinian prospect Billi Godoy face tough Latvian Jurijs Boreiko February 28 in Solden. Supermiddle Lukas Wilascheko take on Hungarian Titusz Szabo.

Czech VIP Bro Box promotes at the Grand Hotel Evropa in Prague March 6 with lightheavy Tomas Adamek (not to be confused with the former WBC lightheavy champ) and heavyweight Petr Sedlak on top.
