“Too Smooth” Godfrey heads to Germany

Posted on | February 28, 2008 | No Comments

for March 8th WBC Title Eliminator versus Kraj

PROVIDENCE (February 27, 2008) – Undefeated WBC No. 1 cruiserweight contender Matt “Too Smooth” Godfrey (16-0, 9 KOs) broke his Hartford-based training camp on Tuesday and departed for Germany to acclimate himself for his March 8 WBC title elimination showdown against unbeaten No. 2 ranked Rudy Kraj (13-0, 10 KOs) in Krefeld.

“I’ve been training for this fight since Christmas,” the 27-year-old NABF champion Godfrey explained, “but I really started training camp around the first week of September for a fight (versus Jeremy Williams) that fell out right before Thanksgiving. So, I’m ready for this fight, and I want to go in and let everybody see what all of this hard work and training has done for me. People are going to see the Matt Godfrey who was so explosive against (Shaun) George and (Felix) Cora (Jr), in addition to seeing some different stuff that comes from new conditioning training that allows me to do a lot more in the ring. Click on the results of March 8 and see Godfrey as the decisive victor.”

The winner of Godfrey-Kraj not only will become the WBC’s mandatory challenger, it also has additional implications because WBC/WBA title-holder David Haye fights WBO champion Enzo Maccarinelli on March 8 in London. A Haye victory reportedly will send him up to heavyweight, leaving the cruiserweight division wide open, and the Godfrey-Kraj winner possibly the new WBC champion or interim title-holder.

“We had the DVD player going every day and we’ve noticed some different things about Kraj that we’ve worked on,” Godfrey spoke about his 2000 Olympic silver medal winning opponent, Kraj. “He’s a solid opponent with good strength and size. He’s the real deal and it’s going to be a great fight.

“I’m not concerned about fighting him in Germany. We’re going over there early to get acclimated to the weather and time. We’ll have ample time to adjust. The winner could be the new world champion or interim title holder. The worst that can happen is the winner is the mandatory contender, and that’s why I’m looking at this as a world title fight, whether it is or isn’t.”

Matt, second heavyweight alternate on the 2004 U.S. Olympic Boxing Team, had a 194-23 amateur record, capturing six national championships — four open tournaments including the 2004 Everlast U.S. Championships, plus two in the Junior Olympics – as well as a Bronze medal at the 2001 Pan-American Games, Silver in all four of that year’s national major tournaments (National Golden Gloves, PAL (Police Athletic League), U.S. Championships and U.S. Challenge) and six-time New England Golden Gloves champion.

The highly decorated U.S. amateur defeated many boxers who today are outstanding professionals such as WBA middleweight title challenger Randy “The Gentleman Griffin (24-1-3, 12 KOs), unbeaten heavyweight prospect Chazz “Mensa With Muscles” Witherspoon (21-0, 14 KOs), Devin Vargas (14-0, 6 KOs), Corey “Black Ice” Cummings (15-2, 12 KOs), Leonard “Haitian Sensation” Pierre (18-3, 13 KOs) and John Johnson (12-1, 10 KOs).

TAKEDOWN RADIO REPORT

America’s Wrestling Radio heads to Vegas with USA Wrestling to Broadcast from Olympic Team Trials!

Des Moines, Iowa

Takedown Radio, America’s leader in wrestling radio broadcasting, will head to Las Vegas, Nevada and the Thomas & Mack Center as the U.S. Olympic Teams are determined in wrestling and judo. This is a special opportunity to tell the story of America’s greatest athletes in their quest for Olympic Gold.

NBC holds the broadcasting rights to the 2008 Olympics but will allow us special access to tell the behind the scenes stories of this very important event. We’ll provide special one on one interviews with the athletes, coaches and personalities that make this sport what it is today.

Join TDR hosts Scott Casber, Steve Foster and crew for all the excitement and passion of Olympic style Wrestling and Judo Live from Las Vegas, Nevada June 12th through the 15th

As they say, “Stay Tuned for Further developments”

This week Takedown Wrestling Radio heads back to the Brute Adidas studios in Des Moines after enjoying the freezing temps surrounding Lambeau Field. What was Curly Lambeau thinking? Even the cold is cold. On the other hand the people are just great. We really do enjoy our journeys to Wisconsin. Lots of good wrestling folks there for sure. Thanks to all of our hosts and friends in Green Bay.

This is the week of the “Quiet before the Storm”. We’ll take a good hard look at the season from hell as many coaches are calling it. Now that’s not a bad thing, well maybe for coaches, but not for fans. This is the most exciting season we’ve enjoyed for many years. We’ve had 5 different number 1 teams, each deserved their spot in the sun at the time. We had a tremendous NWCA National Duals in Cedar Falls. The other events we covered so far this year have given me great hope for this sport and its people. I’ve said it before and will do so again, I’m lucky! I get to work with the greatest hero’s a guy like me could ever have. Each of you, fans included, continue to inspire me to be a better person, to do a better job at telling your stories. Thanks for giving me the insight, the time and sense of belonging to a very special fraternity, Wrestling!

Join Scott Casber, Steve Foster and Jeff Murphy as we welcome-

Tony Ersland- Nebraska’s Assistant Head Coach will join us to discuss the Big 12’s, the recent drop to ISU and prepping a team for the run on the NCAA’s. Tony’s not just a good coach but a great guy. I’m happy to have him back on the show.

Dan Kilgore- Director of New Product Development for Brute Adidas joins us to discuss what’s new on the wrestling equipment front. Yes there is new product out there and there have been some recent innovations with current products that make them last longer and make them better values.

Nick Simmons- The East Lansing Strangler makes his triumphant return to TDR. Nick is a favorite of TDR not just as a wrestler but as a person. He’s having fun with his career and he’s just fun to talk to. We’ll discuss his recent successful run over seas and what he’s doing to prepare for the Olympic Team Trials. Nick was one of the most successful wrestlers to ever compete for Tom Minkle and Michigan State.

Rich Fergola- Head Coach of NIACC in Mason City, Iowa. This young head coach was able to crown 3 NJCAA champions the Trojans finished fourth as a team at the 2008 National Junior College Athletic Association Wrestling Championships held in Rochester, MN last weekend. Fergola’s team had six wrestlers earn All-American (top eight) status during the two-day tournament, the first the Trojans had participated in since the program disbanded in 1976. NIACC’s wrestling program was officially reinstated in November 2006 and Fergola was hired as head coach in March 2007. NIACC was among 36 schools represented at nationals and the team’s 109 points trailed only Iowa Central Community College (138), St. Louis-Meramac in Missouri (117.5) and Labette Community College of Kansas (111).

Mike McClintock- Owner of Sunflower Wrestling Supply. Mike’s interest in wrestling is more than just sales. He understands the wrestling mind set. He knows that the last thing that needs to be on a wrestlers mind is equipment. He has aligned himself with the best brands and people in the sport today. He recently signed Cael Sanderson to a spokesperson role for Sunflower Wrestling Supply. A major pick up indeed.

Round Table Discussion with WIN Magazine’s Editor Mike Finn, USA Wrestling’s communications manager Dr. Craig Sesker, Intern Jeff Murphy, Nurse Steve Foster and Scott Casber make up this round table. We’ll take a look at the Big 10’s, the Big 12’s, the PAC and other conferences as well. Seeding’s for the NCAA’s are on the line and we’ll talk about that too.

So there you go. Another good show planned. I can’t get enough. Join us LIVE Saturday mornings at 9:06 AM at KXNO.com, Takedownradio.com for America’s Wrestling Radio Talk show. We don’t have a dog in the hunt. We just love this sport as much as you do. Thanks to all of our great sponsors for helping to make this show a reality every week of the year.

VINNY PAZ TAKES ON MICKY WARD

Posted on | February 28, 2008 | No Comments

Vinny Paz vs. Micky Ward
“Rumble at the River,” March 14 at Twin River Event Center, RI

PROVIDENCE (February 27, 2008) – Two popular blasts from the past, Vinny Paz and “Irish” Micky Ward, will be in opposite corners on March 14 as honorary captains of Team Italy and Team Ireland, respectively, for the Italian-Irish themed “Rumble at the River” pro boxing show at Twin River Events Center in Lincoln, Rhode Island.

“Rumble at the River,” part of “The Budweiser Night at the Fights” series at Twin River, is promoted by Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment and Sports, Inc., in association with Twin River, Budweiser and Tournament of Contenders.

World super middleweight challenger “The Pride of Providence” Peter Manfredo, Jr. (28-5, 13 KOs), star of The Contender I television reality series, headlines “Rumble at the River” against Shane “The Irish Hitman” Benfield (17-1, 9 KOs) in the 10-round main event.

Paz is a former 5-time world champion who won 50 pro fights, while Ward participated in three “Fights of the Year,” highlighted by his famed trilogy fighting Arturo Gatti. “Vinny Paz and Micky Ward are two of boxing’s all-time great warriors,” promoter Jimmy Burchfield said of the two charter members of CES’ Ring of Honor. “They have both kept their fires burning in boxing, Vinny as a television analyst and Micky as a trainer. Many young fighters, especially in New England, are involved in the sport because they watched these two fighters in action. We’re thrilled that they are involved in ‘Rumble at the River’ as team captains. I’m very happy to call Vinny and Micky my personal friends. They know what boxing has done for them and they give a lot back to the boxing community. They’ll be available to pose for pictures and sign autographs. Our unbeaten heavyweight contender, “Baby” Joe Mesi, will also be there for fans to meet.”

Mesi ESPN Friday Night Fights In-Studio Guest

Undefeated heavyweight contender “Baby” Joe Mesi (36-0, 29 KOs), who is slated to headline the April 4 ESPN2 Friday Night Fights show at Twin River, will make his third appearance as ESPN2 FNF “In Studio” guest on this Friday (Feb. 29) night. Mesi will review the Joe Louis documentary, Klitschko-Ibragimov heavyweight unification fight, Pavlik-Taylor II and preview Vasquez-Marquez III.

IWBF lightweight champion Jaime “The Hurricane” Clampitt (18-4-1, 7 KOs), fighting out of Cranston (RI) puts her belt on the line against veteran contender Belinda “Brown Sugar” Larcuente (23-20-3, 9 KOs), the GBU junior welterweight title-holder from New York City, in the 10-round co-feature. Clampitt is a 3-time world champion, while 20 of Larcuente’s last 21 bouts, dating back nearly five years, have been against world champions.

Stoughton (MA) cruiserweight Chris McInerney (9-1-1, 6 KOs) meets former New England title-holder Tim “The Hammer” Flamos (19-4-1, 7 KOs), of Brockton, in a six-round rematch of a bout McInerney won by sixth round TKO last December.

Undefeated Russian middleweight Andre Nevsky (3-0, 3 KOs), of Worcester (MA), faces Eric Pinarreta (2-1, 2 KOs), of New Bedford (MA), in a four-round match. USBA No. 4 super middleweight Joey “KO Kid” Spina (20-1-1, 15 KOs), of Providence; light heavyweight “Irish” Joey McCreedy (6-1, 4 KOs), of Lowell (MA); unbeaten Lynn (MA) flyweight Isander Beauchamp (3-0) and Providence junior welterweight Diego Pereira making his pro debut are also on the undercard against opponents to be determined. All fights and fighters are subject to change.

Manfredo, Spina, Flamos and Pinarreta are on Paz’ Team Italy; Benfield, Clampitt, McInerney and McCreedy are captained by Ward on Team Ireland.

Tickets for “Rumble at the River” are priced at $35.00 (ADA stage seating only), $40.00, $50.00, (Bronze), $75.00 (Silver), $100.00 (Gold) and $150.00 (Jimmy’s Platinum Club) and may be purchased by calling CES (401.724.2253/2254), going on line at www.cesboxing.com or www.twinriver.com, at the Twin River Event Center (100 Twin River Road, Lincoln, RI), or any TicketMaster location. Contact CES (401.724.2253/2254/www.cesboxing.com) or Twin River Events Center (877.82.RIVER/ www.twinriver.com) for more information. Doors open at 6 PM/ET, first bout at 7 PM/ET.

(Twin River has waived its 18+ rule for “Rumble at the River.” Anybody under the age of 18 must be accompanied at all times by an adult and they must enter through the West entrance.)

XYIENCE ASSIGNS THIRD LAW FIRM TO CASE AGAINST RICH BERGERON

Posted on | February 27, 2008 | No Comments

[mpinpage]

I got this message from the THIRD Xyience lawyer today:

Mr. Bergeron:

On January 18, 2008, Xyience filed a voluntary Chapter 11 petition in the United States Bankruptcy Court, District of Nevada, No. BK-S-08-10474-MKN (“Bankruptcy Case”). This firm, Fennemore Craig, P.C. (“Fennemore”), is Xyience’s reorganization counsel in the Bankruptcy Case.

On February 25, 2008, Xyience filed a Substitution of Counsel substituting Fennemore in place of Hunterton & Associates in Xyience’s state court case against you. We are aware that you have filed a Motion for Rule 11 Sanctions and a Motion to Dismiss (“Motions”). However, due to the voluminous documents that have been filed in this case, we are seeking an extension to file Xyience’s oppositions to your Motions in order to permit this firm an opportunity to review all of the documents that have been filed in this case. We also request this additional time to allow our firm to address pressing matters arising in the Xyience Reorganization case.

Moreover, we are aware that the Court ordered that your Motion to Dismiss will be heard on March 5, 2008, and your Motion for Rule 11 Sanctions will be heard on March 18, 2008. Because we have just recently been substituted in this case, we are also seeking an extension to continue the hearings on your Motions for at least sixty (60) days.

We will be requesting that the Court set one hearing for both of your motions to be held in Las Vegas, Nevada at a date and time when you are able to come to Las Vegas to personally attend those hearings.

Please let me know whether you are willing to stipulate to: (i) providing Xyience an extension to file its Oppositions to your Motions; and (ii) continue the hearings for your Motions for at least sixty (60) days and have the Court set one hearing for both of your motions to be held in Las Vegas, Nevada at a date and time when you are able to come to Las Vegas to personally attend those hearings.

If you have any questions, please contact me at the telephone number listed below, or you can reach me at jpearson@fclaw.com.
Regards,

Jon T. Pearson
FENNEMORE CRAIG, P.C.

Quite the oh $hit letter if you ask me. Looks like they want to stall this baby as long as possible. They want me in Vegas, too. Coincidence? I think not.

The whole letter came as no surprise, though after I read the daily sales circular on Xyience:

What: SportFight founder and MMA superstar Matt “The Law” Lindland has teamed up with Mark Cuban and HDNet to deliver yet another adrenaline-pumping night of mixed martial arts action at the Rose Garden on Friday, April 18 at 7:30pm. SportFight XXII: Re-Awakening will offer up a stacked fight card featuring some of the most skilled and exciting athletes from both the Northwest and beyond, and will be broadcasted live across the country in crystal-clear 1080i high definition.

“We are excited to show the rest of the world what Portland already knows. There is great MMA action in SportFight and we are proud to partner with Matt on this awesome fight card,” said Andrew Simon, CEO of HDNet Fights.

Local fight fans and a national TV audience will be treated a total of 12 stellar matchups, culminating in two main-event battles that will feature the quick and explosive athletes of the featherweight and lightweight divisions.

“We’re going to give the crowd the action-packed lightweights, but we’re also going to have some of the big boys going at it too,” said Lindland, President of SportFight, LLC., referring to the three bruising heavyweight fights scheduled. “This fight card has a little bit of everything.”

In the Main Event: SportFight veteran Enoch Wilson will put his belt and two-year reign as featherweight champion on the line when he takes on Mike Joy, a talented newcomer who earned his top contender status after an impressive unanimous decision victory over Zach George at SportFight XXI. Both men have shown that they are equally comfortable standing and trading blows or taking the fight to the ground, which should make for an entertaining and strategic battle of wills.

In the Co-Main Event: Cam Ward and Dave Jansen will face off for the number one contender spot and a shot at lightweight champion Travis Bush. Ward, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu technician and former SportFight lightweight champion, is no stranger to the bright lights of professional MMA competition. But he will have his hands full with Jansen, an up-and-comer who submitted his last opponent at SportFight XXI with an anaconda choke just 41 seconds into the first round.

Other Fights of Interest: Perhaps the most intriguing fight of the evening will feature the MMA debut of Jason Ellis, a pro skateboarder who has competed in the X-Games and currently hosts a show on Sirius satellite radio. Ellis will trade the familiar confines of the skate vert ramp for the hostile environment of the SportFight ring when he takes on another first-time competitor in local product Jeff Churchill.

PFC to make television debut Friday

LEMOORE, Ca. — The Palace Fighting Championship will once again make history.
The PFC will make its television debut on Friday, Feb. 29 on Comcast SportsNet.

Comcast SportsNet will feature taped delayed fights from PFC 6 “No Retreat, No Surrender”, which was held on Jan. 19th at the Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino. The show is slated to be broadcast at 8 p.m. (PST).

“We are very excited about our broadcast deal with Comcast SportNet. SportsNet is committed to airing one original PFC broadcast per month, and an additional minimum of six replays during each month. This first show debuting on Friday, February 29th at 8 p.m. shows some great action. Additionally, we will have our own storefront on Comcast On Demand with an additional sixty minutes of original PFC content every month with never before seen fights, interviews, behind the scenes looks at the PFC and so much more,” PFC President Christian Printup said. “Our programming will air in over 4.7 million households and every SportsNet market from the Central San Joaquin Valley north to Klamath Falls/Medford, Oregon as well as Reno, Nevada. SportsNet wants to market the PFC programming as they do Sacramento Kings basketball and University of California football. It’s a very good deal for us at this point in our development.”

The first show is slated to feature fights between Fresno’s Casey Olson vs. Anaheim’s Scott Brommage; Russia’s Alex Serdykov vs. Hamilton, Mt’s Mike Gates; Oroville’s Shawn Bias vs. Oakdale’s Art Arciniega; and Lemoore’s Poppies Martinez vs. Atlanta’s Diego Saraiva.

Fans will get a first-hand shot at seeing what PFC World Title bouts are, as Martinez and Saraiva battle for the lightweight crown and Bias and Arciniega fight for the featherweight title.

“We are going to bring the PFC brand, our fighters and our Fight Club Meets Night Club atmosphere and deliver it into over four million living rooms. From a business standpoint it helps us tremendously in terms of sponsors and after market opportunities. It helps the fighters who are featured on the broadcasts in terms of their sponsorship revenue and it’s great because it means more MMA on basic cable for fans of the sport,” Printup said.

“As far as the importance of this deal, there are obviously some measurables that we will be looking at, there are finite objectives, goals and benefits as far as how we can maximize this exposure and the reach of the broadcasts. Beyond that for the sport of mixed martial arts and the PFC because it gives fans another channel to find exciting MMA action without having to purchase Pay Per View. It also helps us determine which markets may be most responsive to live PFC shows when we decide to travel the event outside of Lemoore again.”

In March four more fights will be featured from PFC 6 — Sacramento’s Joseph Benavides vs. Oregon’s Jason Georgiana; Lemoore’s Andrew Martinez vs. Taft’s Doug Hunt; Porterville’s Shawn Klarcyk vs. Rolando Velasquez and Sacrament’s Brad Imes vs. Coarsgold’s Anthony Ruiz. The second installment of PFC on Comcast SportNet is expected to air the week of March 24th-March 30th and details on that broadcast will be available soon.
