HOMECOMING FOR DINGALING MAN

Posted on | February 25, 2008 | No Comments

It has been confirmed that Darnell “The Ding a Ling Man” Wilson will return to the place where he has fought 15 times in his career.

In September 2006, Darnell destroyed Danial Judah (Zab’s brother) in route to four consecutive devestating wins that propelled him into the high levels of the cruiserweight division. Topped off by the 2007 KNOCKOUT of the YEAR.

He recently suffered a close and disappointing lose on ESPN 2 to undefeated BJ Flores.

Not wanting to waste any time, Darnell and promoter Scott Wagner spoke shortly after the bout and agreed on terms to bring him back to THE BALLROOM.

Bobby Gunn to Headline at the Fort McDowell Casino March 22nd!

Posted on | February 21, 2008 | No Comments

Former IBA cruiserweight champion Bobby Gunn 18-3 (15 KO’s) will be returning to the ring on March 22nd to headline a card at the Fort McDowell Casino in Fountain Hills, Arizona. Gunn, who turned pro in 1989, is happy to return to the state where he had many of his early career bouts.

“I am thrilled to be fighting again in Arizona. This wouldn’t be possible without my attorney George Kokkalenios and friend Kyle White who helped with the negotiations to make this fight happen. I also appreciate Dave Feldman, and Lenny Hayko of Felko Promotions for giving me the opportunity to headline their card”, said the heavy handed Gunn.

The former WBO world title challenger is also relieved to be making his return to the ring after a seven month layoff. “I am excited about my return, as well as fighting in front of many of my friends and family from Arizona. To prepare for this fight, I have been working with my old trainer Chuck McGregor. Chuck is one of the best trainers I’ve ever had. My goal for this year is to establish myself in the light heavyweight division, because I will be much stronger then I was as a cruiserweight”, said Gunn who will fight at 180 lbs on the 22nd. Hennessy Sports Proudly Present Thaxton vs Romanov

Posted on | February 21, 2008 | No Comments

Hennessy Sports in association with Golden Palace.net are proud to announce that British Champion Jon Thaxton will be fighting Yuri Romanov, the current European champion and Number 1 contender for the WBA title. The fight will take place on the 4th April 2008 in Norwich and will be broadcast live on Friday Fight Night at 9.30pm on SKY SPORTS ONE.

Jon Thaxton said
:

”
I’m over the moon to have the opportunity to fight for the prestigious European title, my promoter Mick Hennessy has delivered what he promised and pulled out all the stops to secure this fight for me”.

“It’s going to be one hell of a tough fight, but I’m ready for it, I always keep in great shape but I’m mixing up my training with some great sparring. Khan has avoided fighting me and Romanov, is it because we are both too good for him”.

“It will be fantastic to fight in front of my home fans again, I always have great support in Norwich and I know they will turn out in their masses to see me add the European belt to my collection. To win this European title fight will open the door for me to challenge for a major world title.

Thaxton’s promoter Mick Hennessy said:

“This is a brilliant fight between the two best lightweight boxers in Britain and Europe, this is a shoot out for a classic title to find out who is the best lightweight in Europe. It’s so easy to make these big events happen when both teams actually want to fight. I would like to thank Philippe Fondu who worked hard to make this fight happen and Yori Romanov for accepting the best challenge in Europe.

Yuri Romanov manager Philippe Fondu Said:

“I am happy to say that the European lightweight champion, Yuri “the TSAR” ROMANOV and his management team are grateful to Hennessy Sports for giving us the possibility to defend the European title against Jonathan THAXTON, and that, hopefully, the British public will appreciate and respect two highly rated boxers who give the sport the challenge that is now, too often, missing”.

“Some boxers talk about world title aspirations, but, besides having been given the opportunity to support their claims prefer to avoid a real challenge and choose to select an easy route”.

“It’s never been the case with either Yuri Romanov or Jonathan Thaxton, both of whom never ducked anyone in the ring”.

MANFREDO MAKING A MARCH COMEBACK FOR RUMBLE AT THE RIVER

Manfredo-Benfield
Headline “Rumble at the River”
March 14 at Twin River Event Center, RI

PROVIDENCE (February 21, 2008) – World super middleweight challenger “The Pride of Providence” Peter Manfredo, Jr. returns to the ring March 14, headlining “Rumble at the River,” against Shane “The Irish Hitman” Benfield, in an Italian-Irish themed pro boxing show at Twin River Events Center in Lincoln, Rhode Island.

“Rumble at the River,” part of “The Budweiser Night at the Fights” series at Twin River, is promoted by Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment and Sports, Inc., in association with Twin River, Budweiser and Tournament of Contenders.

Manfredo (28-5, 13 KOs), star of The Contender I television reality series, fights Benfield (17-1, 9 KOs) in the 10-round main event. Coming off of a 10-round loss by decision to former world champion Jeff Lacy on the Mayweather-Hatton pay-per-view card, Peter hopes to rebound against Benfield, who dropped a 12-round decision in his last action to DeAndrey Abron for the NABO belt that Manfredo once held.

IWBF lightweight champion Jaime “The Hurricane” Clampitt (18-4-1, 7 KOs), fighting out of Cranston (RI) defends her crown against battle-tested Belinda “Brown Sugar” Larcuente (23-20-3, 9 KOs), the GBU junior welterweight title-holder from New York City, in the 10-round co-feature. Clampitt is a 3-time world champion, while 20 of Larcuente’s last 21 bouts, dating back nearly five years, have been against world champions.

“St. Joseph’s (March 19) is a very important Italian holiday as St. Patrick’s Day (Mar. 17) is for the Irish,” promoter Jimmy Burchfield said. “We decided to promote an Italian-Irish themed show on the preceding weekend of the two holidays. We’re happy and excited about this concept and plan to make it an annual event at Twin River. Even though we have a lot of Italian and Irish fighters on this card, some matched against each other, we’ll also have a few other ethnic groups represented and it’ll all add up to a great night of boxing.”

In the chief supporting bout on the undercard, Stoughton (MA) cruiserweight Chris McInerney (9-1-1, 6 KOs) faces former New England title-holder Tim “The Hammer” Flamos (19-4-1, 7 KOs), of Brockton, in a six-round bout of a rematch McInerney won by sixth round TKO last December.

Unbeaten Russian middleweight Andre Nevsky (3-0, 3 KOs), of Worcester (MA), meets his toughest test to date in a four-round bout versus Eric Pinarreta (2-1, 2 KOs), of New Bedford (MA). USBA No. 4 super middleweight Joey “KO Kid” Spina (20-1-1, 15 KOs), of Providence; light heavyweight “Irish” Joey McCreedy (6-1, 4 KOs), of Lowell (MA); unbeaten Lynn (MA) flyweight Isander Beauchamp (3-0) and Providence junior welterweight Diego Pereira making his pro debut are also on the card against opponents to be determined. All fights and fighters are subject to change.

Manfredo, Spina, Flamos and Pinarreta are on Team Italy; Benfield, Clampitt, McInerney and McCreedy comprise Team Ireland.

Tickets for “Rumble at the River” are priced at $35.00 (ADA stage seating only), $40.00, $50.00, (Bronze), $75.00 (Silver), $100.00 (Gold) and $150.00 (Jimmy’s Platinum Club) and may be purchased by calling CES (401.724.2253/2254), going on line at www.cesboxing.com or www.twinriver.com, at the Twin River Event Center (100 Twin River Road, Lincoln, RI), or any TicketMaster location. Contact CES (401.724.2253/2254/www.cesboxing.com) or Twin River Events Center (877.82.RIVER/ www.twinriver.com) for more information. Doors open at 6 PM/ET, first bout at 7 PM/ET.

(Twin River has waived its 18+ rule for “Rumble at the River.” Anybody under the age of 18 must be accompanied at all times by an adult and they must enter through the West entrance.)

PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

Peter Manfredo Jr.: “I would like to apologize to all my fans for my performance against Jeff Lacy. I’m very focused for this fight. I had a bad 2007 but everything happens for a reason. I have the desire to fight again. I’m doing this for me, my family, my friends and my hometown. Shane better bring his A game. I would also like to wish Matt Godfrey best of luck in Germany. (Godfrey fights Rudy Kraj in a WBC cruiserweight title elimination bout on March 8.) I feel it’s his time.”

Shane Benfield: (by phone) “I’m ‘The Hitman’ and Peter should know that. I will make sure everyone in Providence knows they call me ‘The Hitman.’ Vinny Paz is a good friend of mine and I will make him proud. I’m excited to fight and I’m coming to fight. Peter is a big star from The Contender and I can’t wait to beat him.”

Jaime Clampitt: “I’m so excited to finally fight here at Twin River. I was supposed to fight here a few times but the fights fell through. I’m finally getting my chance and I will make the best of it. Jimmy Burchfield is like a father to me and he has stuck behind me through everything and I want to thank him for that. My opponent (Belinda) is very tough and very slick, but I look forward to breaking her down and getting a huge win on my record.”

Joey Spina: “I try to knock everyone out and the 14th will be no different. I’ve been sparring a lot
and looking good. I can’t wait to get back in the ring.”

Chris McInerney: “It was a good fight last time. He wants a rematch, so I will give it to him. I’m happy and excited to be fighting for CES and this is a great card to be on. I hope to see everyone at the fights.”

Joey McCreedy: “This is a great card with Peter and Jaime on top. I’m honored to be on it. I’m coming off a great win where I showed heart and determination. I will do the same thing on this card. I’ve been training hard and it will show.”

Andre Nevsky: “I’m very excited. I’m going to have a big knockout.”

Eric Pinarreta: “I want to thank Team Nevsky for taking the fight. He’s a good fighter but I’m going to beat him. I will see everyone at The River.”

Isander Beauchamp: “I’m very happy to be fighting for CES and I can’t wait to knock someone out. Please come to see me on the 14th. You won’t be disappointed.”

Diego Pereira: “This is my pro debut and it’s going to be huge. I’m for real and I’m here to stay.”

HDNet Fights and the Xtreme Fighting League team up to Highlight Mixed martial arts IN Oklahoma

Three fighters from Team Takedown featured LIVE from Tulsa exclusively on HDNet – Saturday March 15

DALLAS – (February 21, 2008) HDNet Fights announced today that it is teaming with the Xtreme Fighting League for the upcoming “HDNet Fights Presents: Xtreme Fighting League” on March 15 at the Expo Square Pavilion in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The event will air live, exclusively on HDNet. This announcement is the latest is a series of new partnerships formed between HDNet Fights and many mixed martial arts organizations around the country and in Canada.

For the event, Team Takedown will send three of its fighters – and Oklahoma wrestling legends: Jake Rosholt, Johny Hendricks and Shane Roller. All are alumni of Oklahoma State University, so it won’t be too much of a stretch to hope for a partisan crowd. In addition, the remainder of the card will feature additional Oklahoma-based talent and young athletes from Osaka, Japan.

Team Takedown is a fighter management company based out of Texas. It is known for the unconventional method of putting fighters on salary, allowing them to focus on training full-time. In addition, its fighters are making the transition from all-star wrestlers to mixed martial arts athletes.

“I am excited about this partnership with HDNet Fights.” said XFL founder and promoter Dale Cook. “This card and the exposure on HDNet is tremendous for our League, our fighters and our city.”

HDNet Fights President Guy Mezger said Cook has been a long-time promoter of combat martial arts.

“Dale always has a strong regional show and we’re excited about partnering with him,” Mezger said. “He can continue to grow his shows and we’ll have high quality mixed martial arts programming for HDNet.”

Rosholt (3-0), will take on Chad Jay (7-2) in one of two main event fights. Rosholt is a three-time NCAA wrestling champion and four-time All American.

Hendricks, (3-0), will battle Blake McDaniels (5-0) in the second main event match-up. Hendricks is also a four-time All American and as well as a two-time NCAA wrestling champion.

Both main events consist of 3 five-minute rounds.

Roller (2-1) is a three-time All American and will face Yoshihiro Kitaoka (4-2-1) out of Japan. The fight, one of three “U.S. versus Japan” bouts, will have 3 four minute rounds.

Of the Team Takedown members, Mezger said the former OSU Cowboys are the next generation of MMA superstars.

“This will be their first time on TV,” he said. “We really expect a lot of good things out of them.”

The remainder of the U.S. team consists of Demarco Powrill(6-1) who will square-off against Akira Ninjo (6-4). Also, Shane Waits (7-1), enters the cage against Kazuya Nishiyama (5-2-1) in another U.S. versus Japan match.

The Japanese team hails from the renowned Yamane Dojo, in Osaka.

Two Xtreme Fighting League championships will be featured on the card when XFL 170 pound champion Levi Avera (8-2) accepts the challenge of XFL challenger Brandon Newsone (6-1), and 155 pound champ Jon “King of Late Nite” Carson defends against top XFL contender Mike Budnick (8-0).

The rest of the card features HDNet Fights veteran Chris Bowles (7-2) against San Antonio’s Adrian Sanchez (5-3) at 155 pounds; Donnie “PitBull” Frye (5-2) versus Josh “Platypus” Pulsifer at 145 pounds; and Jason “Real Deal” Brazeal (4-1) against Warren Walkerd (4-2) of the Miletich Fighting camp, at 170 pounds.

The Bowles/Sanchez fight is the only undercard match-up of 3 five minute rounds. Every other is three rounds of four minutes.

Tickets for the event, at the Expo Square Pavilion in Tulsa, go on sale on February 25. Prices are $25, $35 and $55.

MMA legend and co-host of HDNet’s “Inside MMA” Bas Rutten will be in attendance as a special guest and will conduct a seminar that same day at Apollo’s Karate & MMA in Tulsa.

JUAN MANUEL MARQUEZ TRAINING CAMP NOTES

Posted on | February 21, 2008 | No Comments

LOS ANGELES, CA (February 21)—Fundamentally, it is Mexican champion Juan Manuel Márquez’s professionalism and dedication to his craft that makes him one of the best in the sport of boxing today. Márquez, one of the last warriors of the great Aztec dynasty of modern boxing, seeks a place in the boxing history, has been proven to be among the elite level in the sport but he attributes his success both in and out of the ring to his tremendous work effort and although successful, still maintains his hunger for fame and glory that keeps him dedicated to his training and committed to his daily regime of hard work and training when preparing for a fight.

“In the ring there is no such thing as an easy fight or a small challenge and I keep that in mind and base my philosophy on that when I am preparing for a fight. If you do not look at boxing that way, with a very serious attitude and dedication to the way a fighter prepares for a fight. There is no getting around it in boxing and if you do not prepare as you should the opportunity passes you by and all the glory with it.”, said Juan Manuel Márquez, from his Mexico City training camp, where is in preparation—with an eye on revenge—for this fight against the extremely talented, and worthy Manny Pacquiao on March 15.

“This fight against Manny [Pacquiao] is definitely an opportunity for me to seek revenge and also a tremendous victory, as I plan on having, for my career. It will give me the truly highest honor of being among the other great Mexican warriors who have come before and whose names stand throughout the incredible boxing history of our great country. Also it will give me the fame, glory and the commercial boxing value that is at the top of the sport.”

A CHAMPION’S ROUTINE:

Marquez works hard from Monday to Saturday when he faithfully arrives at the gym and has spared nothing to achieve an ideal physical condition, and be at his best when he faces Pacquaio, considered one of the best in the sport today, on March 15.

“The fight is very interesting. I do not feel I have to prove anything because I feel like I won the first fight, even though they declared it a draw.”, said Márquez. “But this time I want to make a new history. I know the same thing won’t happen as it did on May 8, 2004 as there will be no doubt as to who won this one.”

Here’s how Marquez gets to his peak performance level. Let’s take a look at his daily routine:

4:00 a.m.: Runs for close to an hour in the snow-covered Toluca mountain, higher than a quarter of the entire country. Other days he chooses to stay closer to home and runs in the Desert of the Lions.

6:30 a.m.: Returns home and sleeps for a couple hours.

9:00 to 9:30 a.m.: Nutritious breakfast with lots of fruits and fruit juices, which he likes to mix in with his eggs.

1:00 p m.: Arrives at the gymnasium for training sessions which include sparring, calisthenics (his basic exercise routine.) As he is already in the final phase and in tremendous shape, he can work more on his speed and velocity for the fight.

4:00 p m. to 5:00 p m.: He returns home, eats something and then rests again. Staying on his strict protein and low carbohydrate diet, he has a variety to choose from such as chicken, fish, vegetables and fruit. As he lives together with his family, he likes to relax, watch television and catch-up on other sporting events, such as soccer.

9:00 p m.: After having one more luxury piece of fruit, he goes to sleep to await another day.

SPARRING PAYS OFF

Marquez understands the routine for preparing for a fight is critical to success. But it is in sparring that he has the chance to work on his strategic game plan, fine-tuning the various ways he feels he need to use for fighting Pacquaio. Surrounded by his team, including his coach and mentor, Ignacio “Nacho” Beristain, Marquez visualizes the fight and he and his team timelessly go over the game plan, making it routine so the night of the fight it comes naturally.

For this preparation, Marquez has enlisted the services of sparring partners of the Nicaraguan left-hander Eusebio “Osejo” Gray, native of San Judas, Nicaragua, and whose velocity serves him so that the monarch intensify the reflections and the I pitch. Also he counts on the left-handed one Venezuelan Rafael Hernández, whose power and movements cause they think and to handle the situation to Juan Manuel. Hernández is high, strong and their priority is to remove consistently the right hand simulating the tagalog challenger.

Finally counts on the Japanese one Norio Kimura, who has a month in Mexico City. Is left-handed, weighs 140 pounds, and is the champion superligero national of its country. It is classified number 7 by the CMB, and has carried out 11 defenses of its girdle. Kimura is aggressive and its work is not to leave to think to the champion and to put it on the cords.

RE-TELLING THE FACTS

In the boxing, to part of history, there are moments that always remembered. They are moments of courage and resilience, of getting knocked down and fighting back. Marquez, and many a boxing fan, remembers the night of May 8, when at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, when he showed everyone his true grit and determination in the first round of the fight. Fighting Pacquaio for the first time, the Fillipino came out strong and knocked the Mexican challenger down three times in the first minutes of the fight. What Pacquaio and the crowd were amazed to see was the electrifying effort of Marquez who continued to get up, found his way through the first round and then changed the direction of the fight almost immediately at the start of the second round. What looked like a complete domination of Pacquaio over Marquez, became a competitive slugfest that ended in a controversial draw. “It was a robbery as far as I’m concerned and most people agree I won the fight,” said Marquez. “But looking back does me no good and all I know is on March 15, I am going to fight to the end, be victorious and there will be no doubt among everyone as to who is the best in the super-featherweight division.”
