When Universum´s heavyweight veteran Luan Krasniqi, 30-3-1, pulled out of a possible EBU titlefight against Matt Skelton there was obviously a plan behind it and in today´s edition of Bild Zeitung it´s all explained. Universum have applied for another voluntary defence for WBA champ Ruslan Chagaev – against Krasniqi. The fight – if the WBA gives permission for it – should take place in May at the Porsche Arena in Stuttgart, hometurf for Luan, who resides in nearby Rottweil. It´s a big chance for the 36-year old veteran and for sure his last; he´s been inactive since losing a WBO eliminator to Tony Thompson. Chagaev´s mandatory challenger is Nikolai Valuev.

Turkish heavy Sinan Samil Sam outscored one Mazur Ali over six this past weekend in Istanbul and is now gearing up to fight for the vacant EBU title against Matt Skelton. Sam got the chance after German Luan Krasniqi pulled out. Luan was first to have taken on Aleksander Dimitrenko, who priced himself out, then Skelton stepped in and now Krasniqi is out, Skelton remains and Sam is in. Why Krasniqi pulled out remains an open question.

Amir Khan, vs Martin Kristjansen is on again – this time for April 5 in Bolton, UK. The fight, a WBO eliminator at lightweight, was originally scheduled for January 30 but the Dane was forced to pull out due to the flu.

It´s all silent about the WBC heavyweight eliminator between Juan Carlos Gomez and Vladimir Virchis from the WBC and Universum, who after purse bids January 14 have the right to stage the fight. First Gomez had internal problem with his promoter, then Virchis pulled out of the original March 8 date. After that it´s been very quiet. Virchis have issued a press release that he is now ready to face Gomez but is worried about that no new date have been set by Universum.

Hungarian lightheavy Imre Szello, a quarter finalist in the recent World championships in Chicago, have signed with Sauerland Event.

Ukrainian promotional outfit Union Boxing Team have moved their planned April 5 show in Donetsk to March 25 to accomodate TV (EuroSport). Welter Vyacheslav Senchenko defends the WBA I/C title against Pole Slavomir Ziemlewicz. WBC Youth champ Stas Kashtanov make a final (he´s overaged after this) defence of the title against Brazilian Joilson Morais da Silva. WBO I/C jr lightweight titleholder Oleg Yefimovich take on Spaniard Juan Manuel Garcia Martin.

Gaetano Nespro defends the Italian 160 lb title against Luciano Lombardi February 27 in Monza.

Italian jr welter veteran Gianluca Branco fight German Nico Salzmann on OPI 2000´s show in Milan February 29.

Cruiser Herbie Hide face Hungarian Joszef Nagy March 11 in Halle an der Saale.

Alexandre Vladimirov defends the IBC Int´l title March 9 on a show in Sofia, Bulgaria, against Swiss Bertrand Bossel.

Local hero Alex Mogylevski face Alex Litau for the vacant EBO cruiserweight title February 23 in Aachen. EBO? European Boxing Organisation, a subtitle – sort of – to GBO, a Munich-based organisation that broke out of the GBA.

PAVLIK TAKES IT TO TAYLOR AGAIN!!

Posted on | February 20, 2008 | No Comments

ROUND BY ROUND REPORT BY: GEORGE PHILLIPS

Good first round, but throwing bombs. Taylor stunned slightly by a big right hand, but he fought back well, landing a big blow of his own. Pavlik throwing rights over the Taylor Jab, which he is using more. Pavlik’s round for bigger shots

Second round, jabbing contest first minute of the round, but looking to land the overhand right. Both are highly skilled fighters, easy to tell. Pavlik’s defense seems a bit better than first fight, actually keeping his hands higher, it’s obvious. Manny says JT looks more focused then in the first fight. Good Right by Taylor 45 seconds left in the round, Pav not hurt, but awake Pavlik coming forward, but JT’s round.

Pace is nowhere near first fight, but favoring Taylor. Taylor not wasting any punches, as in, he is landing a lot. This is a much more disciplined fight.
Round 3 to Taylor for some right hands

Round 4: Pace continues to slow, not boring, but technical and tactical. Kelly always throwing the jab, which seems to frustrate Taylor a bit. Pavlik throwing hooks off jabs this round, Taylor not looking awful, but not bad. As I say that Taylor lands a right hand and left hook to probably give him the round. Pavlik actually lands two rights at the end of the round…tough round to score…Pavlik for Jabs and end round work, Taylor good work though

Round 5: Right hand Pavlik, Taylor seems to be not slowing, but not working as much. Overhand Right by Taylor, announcers don’t even talk about it, crowd noticed it though. Pavlik throwing uppercuts and hooks to the body in now, gaining confidence. Taylor’s nose shows the first blood of the fight. When Taylor jabs he is landing, and working well off it, just not enough. Although, I think I pick him this round, left hook ends the round for Taylor.

Round 6: Pavlik landing the jab a lot in this round, nine jabs in a row unanswered by Taylor, but then comes back ripping him with a right hand. It’s Pavlik’s controlled pace vs. violent outburst by Taylor. Another close round. Sorry I can’t decide more one way. I say Pavlik, but by a hair.

Round 7: Taylor used the jab, then stops, frustrating for Taylor backers I would imagine. Looking through neutral glasses I feel this fight is dead even. It’s Pavlik’s aggression and Jabs vs. Taylors one or two good punches a round. It has the feel of a fight that’s going the distance, but what do I know. Pavlik’s round due to Taylor inactivity. Taylor tries to steal at the round, doesn’t work on my card.

Round 8: Taylor is only averaging around 35 punches a round to Pavlik’s 60 or more. First clinch of the fight in round eight. Pavlik doesn’t look great or anything, but Taylor seems to be tiring, once again looking for a clinch. What happens is Pavlik throws about 15 punches in a row and Taylor comes back with like a fast looking one two. As I say that Lampley mirror’s exactly what I wrote. Pavlik’s putting in the better work, no real other way to say it at this point. Taylor is still in it, and as we know, has a way to win close fights. Taylor right hand out of a clinch, Pavlik’s round in my opinion.

Round 9: Taylor threw 19 punches last round, but landed 11. Better round for Taylor, although his eyes are swelling, not too bad, but noticeable. Taylor has come out with some needed vigor. I have Pavlik up by two. I personally like activity, but this fight has weeks of argument written all over it. Sorry for my individual commentary. I liked Taylor that round for his activity.

Round 10: Good jab for Taylor, and a good right and left by Taylor. Taylor still looks sharp. Pavlik hasn’t really been hurt by it, but he’s scoring points for sure. Neither fighter has been really hurt; both have taken some good shots…Taylor’s round, evening up the fight on my card.

Round 11: Taylor surely looks stronger down the stretch. Pavlik, as noted by the commentators has appeared sloppy as of late. Tired maybe, but still coming forward. Right hand by Pavlik puts Taylor into the ropes near the end of the round. First time Taylor’s back has hit the ropes all night. Pavlik’s round.

Round 12: Taylor right hand followed by a one-two by Taylor. Two minutes left in the fight. Win, lose, or draw, Taylor’s stock should rise. He looks like a new fighter. Trainer, weight, whatever it is, he’s looked good. One minute left, fighters clinch, both are tired. Pavlik comes forward. Taylor lands some body shots. Taylor comes on hard down the stretch. Fighters hug in the middle of the ring. I don’t know who has it I give Pavlik the round and the fight 115-113. As noted, could go both ways.

Final scorecards
117-111
115-113
116-112

All to the winner, Kelly Pavlik

NICARAGUA BOXING CARD FEATURES HEAVY HITTERS

Román “El Chocolatito” González headlines big night of boxing on February 29th at Pharaohs Casino in Managua, Nicaragua

Managua, Nicaragua (February 18, 2008)—One of the hottest names in the sport of boxing, Román “El Chocolatito” Gonzalez will risk his undefeated when Boxeo PRODESA puts on a big nine bout card on Friday February 29th at Pharaohs Casino in Managua, Nicaragua.

Gonzalez, just twenty years old out of Managua will look to thrill the hometown fans when he takes on Javier Maravilla Murillo in a ten round minimum weight fight.

Gonzalez has burst onto the international scene over the last six month as he brings in a gaudy record of 17-0 with 16 knockouts and is considered to be the biggest puncher in boxing’s smallest weight class.

Gonzalez, (Ranked #1 by the WBA, #3 by the WBC, #3 by the IBF and #4 by the WBO) is coming off his first non-knockout performance when he went the distance, but easily defeated Hiroshi Matsumoto via ten round unanimous decision on January 14th in Kanagawa, Japan.

The only thing that stands between Gonzalez and a world title shot is the upset-minded Murillo.

Murillo, of Guadalajara, Mexico has a record of 7-7-1 with three knockouts.

Murillo has been in with some of the best fighters in the lower weight divisions as he went the distance with Cesar Lopez (16-1), Murillo put up good efforts when he was stopped by former Jr. Flyweight world champion Victor Burgos and former world title challenger Gerardo Verde.

The co-feature on February 29th will be ten round minimum weight battle between up and coming Yader Escobar and former world title challenger, Miguel Tellez.

The twenty-one year old Escobar has a record of 11-2-1 with nine knockouts is the WBA FEDECARBIE champion at 105 lbs.

Escobar has proved that he will fight anyone, anywhere as evidenced by his only two losses on his ledger when he went to Puerto Rico twice to fight the highly regarded and world ranked Omar Soto.

Escobar has won three in a row which includes his last effort when he stopped José Hurtado on January 25th in Masaya, Nicaragua.

Tellez, of Managua, Nicaragua has a record of 18-9 with six knockouts has fought some of the best fighters in the 105-pound division and maybe best known for dropping a world title challenge to the classy Ivan Calderon on April 29, 2006 in Puerto Rico.

Tellez will be eager to get back in the win column as he has been stopped in four straight fights which include being stopped by highly regarded Nerys Espinoza last December 14th at Pharaohs Casino.

Jr. Flyweight Nerys Espinoza (ranked #6 by the WBA, #9 by the IBF and WBO) will look to get another title opportunity but has to first defeat Erick Aguilera in a scheduled eight round tussle.

Espinoza, 21-4 with 15 knockouts was ever so close to becoming world champion in 2005 when he knocked down champion Roberto Vazquez in the tenth round of their WBA title bout with Vazquez ultimately taking the unanimous decision loss.

Aguilera, of Nicaragua will be looking to get back in the win column after dropping his last three bouts including fights with former world title challenger Evert Briceno and in his last outing to undefeated Oliver Flores last September 4th.

This great night of boxing will be rounded out some terrific fights that will feature:

Francisco Huerta, 11-5 (6 KO’s) battling Moises Castro (25-9-2, 15 KO’s) in an eight round Super Featherweight bout.

Moises Solis (8-1, 4 KO’s) taking on Ricardo Lopez (3-2, 1 KO) in an eight round Jr. Welterweight bout.

Mathias Garcia (13-4, 12 KO’s) getting it on with Lenin Tellez (4-8, 2 KO’s) in an eight round Featherweight affair.

Luis Sandoval (8-5, 5 KO’s) takes on Ernesto Castro (11-8-1, 9 KO’s) in a six round Super Flyweight fight.

Julio Buitrago (8-5, 2 KO’s) takes on Lenin Trana (0-2-1) in a six round minimum weight tussle.

Cristian Ruiz (4-0, 3 KO’s) will look to remain undefeated when he battles Nicolas Montes (0-1-1) in a Jr. Welterweight bout scheduled for four rounds.

Tickets can be purchased at all Pharohs Casino Locations and will have costs of between US $ 35.00 and US $ 10 normal seats. The Show will be transmitted live starting 7:00 PM by Channel 8 Nicaragua. For more information on www.prodesa.com.ni
