Malignaggi jump starts 2008

Posted on | January 30, 2008 | No Comments

NEW YORK (January 30, 2008) – International Boxing Federation junior welterweight champion Paulie “The Magic Man” Malignaggi has started off the new year in grand fashion, appropriate for one befitting a young world champion with his flamboyant personality and crossover appeal.

First, The Ring magazine selected Malignaggi (24-1, 5 KOs) as its 2007 Comeback of the Year fighter, and then the movie premiere of his life story, “Magic Man: The Paulie Malignaggi Story,” that drew rave reviews on SHOWTIME. Paulie followed that with his first title defense, winning a 12-round unanimous decision January 5 against mandatory challenger Herman “The Black Panther” Ngoudjo on Showtime Championship Boxing at Bally’s Casino in Atlantic City.

The outspoken Brooklyn boxer, rated No. 2 by The Ring, was then the subject of a full page spread (Jan. 10 issue) in the trendy Time Out New York magazine
(http://www.timeout.com/newyork/articles/shopping/25510/rummaging-with). Columnist Kristina Dechter’s “Rummaging with:” column included sidebar pieces on Paulie’s gloves (Everlast), his flex terry headband and Smooth ‘n Shine hair gel, Gleason’s Gym where he trains, his L-R-G Manimal hoodie and favorite pizza (Portobello’s).

The column’s sub-title read: We go to the ropes with a Brooklyn-bred boxer on how to dress, eat and train like a champ. “Known for his smack-spouting mouth and his dramatic entrances, Paulie “Magic Man” Malignaggi brings panache along with jaw-crunching punches in the ring……The photogenic brawler (Malignaggi modeled streetwear for a Playboy fashion shoot last summer) has earned a reputation for his flashy ensembles.”

Then, “The Magic Man” joined New Jersey Governor John S. Corzine for the official ribbon-cutting festivities reopening the Union City Boxing Club.

Malignaggi, an avid soccer fan whose father Nello played pro soccer in Sicily, was honorary captain for the New Jersey Ironmen professional indoor soccer team, participating in the opening kick-off ceremony on Jan. 25.

“It’s been exciting so far,” Malignaggi said. “I’ve started the year off with a bang. We’re on our way to a big year in 2008. We’re going to continue this momentum and have a very successful year. Paulie Malignaggi is on the right path to becoming a household name – always the intent right from the start – in and out of boxing in 2008.”

After being on the road for what seems like year’s, (not actually years) the crew returns to the Brute Adidas Studios at Des Moines Sports Station AM 1460 KXNO for the next 3 weeks. We start with a look at some top level athletes working toward the Olympics Trials, One man who has done so much for wrestling and a few who are doing some good things on a local basis.

Scheduled to join Steve Foster, Scott Casber, Chris Arns and company-

Alan Meltzer- Successful Business Man. Alan has done much for several wrestling programs and in particular Mark Cody’s American University Wrestling. AU’s Coach Mark Cody credits Mr. Meltzer as being the inspiration for American University’s improbable rise to wrestling prominence. Cody said, “Alan knows how much effort it took to get the Eagles back off the ground.” “Blind faith took them to even greater heights”. “I just knew how much wrestling had meant to me and the values, the lessons in life that it teaches you,” Alan Meltzer said. “You’re not going to get rich wrestling. You’re not going to go out and sign a contract to be a pro. But you learn lessons every single day in that practice room and in one-on-one competition and you just can’t put a price on something like that.”

Joe Williams- Former Iowa Hawkeye, Asst. Coach at Iowa and NIU and multi time champion returns to the show to talk about life, training for the Olympic trials and working toward the greater good. It’ll be good to catch up with one of the best wrestlers I’ve ever seen.

Sara Mc Mann- 63 kg/138.75 lbs. –Gaffney, S.C. (Sunkist Kids)
Olympic and World silver medalist Sara Mc Mann, U.S. Nationals Champion, and a member of The United States women’s freestyle team joins us to discuss women’s wrestling and the difficult job of earning Olympic berths. The U.S. Team under Coach Steiner recently faced the Ukraine and Japanese teams in a dual-meet event that included the top six finishers from the 2007 World Championships in which Team USA took 2nd.

Tolly Thompson- NCAA champion and Janesville, Iowa, native Tolly Thompson is beginning his 8th overall season as Panther assistant coach. He was promoted during the 2003-04 season on head coach Brad Penrith’s staff. Thompson joined the Panther staff as the team’s Conditioning Specialist in the 2002-03 season. He returned to UNI after two years as the strength and conditioning coach at Nebraska. He was a member of the Panthers’ coaching staff during the 1999-2000 season as a volunteer assistant. Thompson, 35, has a wealth of international experience and was named the winner of the 2005 John Smith Award as the Freestyle Wrestler of the Year by USA Wrestling. Thompson has represented the United States at the World Championships. He took first-place honors at the 2006 U.S. World Team Trials in Sioux City, Iowa.

Join us for this week for a program that will have the flavors of giving and international goals.

My MMA Network will blur the lines between sports and entertainment and with Ice Cube and DJ Pooh, we have two of the best in the business on our side,” stated IFC President, Rico White.

“My MMA Network and UVNTV will not only serve as a platform for the IFC to market and broadcast their events, but allow for all MMA promoters, fighters and advertisers to showcase who they are to a worldwide audience. My MMA Network, like traditional TV, will have set programs, pay per view and On-Demand access right at your finger tips,” commented IFC CIO, Jeff Zimmerman.

“The IFC and My MMA Network was a perfect complement to what UVNTV is all about,” stated co-founder DJ Pooh. “We, as entertainers, understand the cross appeal of sports and entertainment and we know that MMA is the hottest thing out there today.” “This will give our viewers the best of both of worlds,” added Pooh.

“My MMA Network brought the passion we were looking for in a channel for our network,” stated co-founder, Ice Cube. “Pooh and the guys wanted to create a platform for entrepreneurs to follow their dream, just as we did. We believe My MMA Network is on to something big here and we look forward to helping them get there,” continued Cube.

International Fighting Championship, LLC (IFC) will promote fights around the country in 2008 and will use UVNTV.com to promote their family of brands such as My MMA Network. Look for more announcements as My MMA Network adds programming and content to their channel.
