BOXING DRILL # 45: PROPER UPPER BODY STRETCHING
FITNESS TIP: ESTIMATING YOUR MAXIMUM HEART RATE
ASK THE TRAINER
Boxing Drill #45: Proper Upper Body Stretching
After a great boxing workout, skipping, working the bags or target mitts, you need to stretch out those muscles, and allow them to recover.
By performing proper stretches on a consistent basis, you can attain your full physical potential. Here are some great upper body stretches.
Shoulder Stretch
Stand tall with the knees relaxed and the abdominal muscles tight. Extend the arms behind the back and the fingers interlaced. Straighten the arms by rotating the elbows inward, and then lift the arms up behind you until a slight tension is felt through the shoulders, chest and arms. Release and repeat.
Upper Back Stretch
To stretch the backside of the shoulder area, cross one arm in front of the body. Gently press the elbow across the chest to the opposite shoulder, stretching the middle of the upper back. To stretch more of the shoulder area, extend and lower the arm across the body. Release and repeat.
Here are some guidelines to follow for stretching.
Isolate the muscle group, not placing any stress on the joints.
Find zero tension on the muscle. This is your starting point.
Find the first gentle tension on the muscle, hold this steady position.
Hold the stretch long enough to allow the tension to disappear and the muscle to relax.
Andy & Jamie’s Health & Fitness Tip: Estimating Your Maximum Heart Rate
THE TRAINING HEART RATE
Your training heart rate is the number of times the heart beats in one minute in order to produce a conditioning effect. This number should be between 60 and 80% of your maximum heart rate.
Here’s one way to estimate your Maximum Heart Rate. For men subtract your age from the number 220. For women subtract your age from 226. Multiply this number by 60% for the lower end of your training Heart Rate or 80% for the higher end of your training Heart Rate.
Maximum HEART RATE: MEN: 220 – age, WOMEN: 226 – age
Multiply by 60% for the lower end of your training heart rate or 80% for the higher end of your training heart rate.
Ask the Trainer:
“I’m not a competitive boxer, but I enjoy my fitness boxing classes at my local gym. I go to three classes a week. The classes include plenty of Heavy bag and target mitts drills. I find lately that my hands and forearms are sore for days. I don’t want to miss my classes, do you have any suggestions?”
The most common fitness boxing injuries occur in the hands and shoulder joints. Although they are hard to eliminate, plenty can be done to help prevent them. Some preventive measures include proper warm-up and cool-down along with stretching exercises. Not allowing enough recovery between hard workouts can lead to overtraining and can also be a major cause of injuries. A well-conditioned boxer can work out five to six times a week. Ensure that you are gradually building up your endurance and varying the intensity of your workouts. Allow enough recovery time between your boxing workouts. Make sure you are properly executing your punches on the heavy bag. (Visit the Balazs Archives for more on proper punch execution).
Many fitness boxing injuries can be prevented by wearing proper protective gear. Good bag gloves and hand wraps are available in a wide range of prices and styles. They should fit properly and have shock absorbing foam.

HARD NUTRITION presents RING OF FIRE 31: UNDISPUTED!!
Posted on | November 23, 2007 | 1 Comment
RING OF FIRE 31: UNDISPUTED!! will take place on Saturday, December 1st 2007 at the Broomfield Event Center in Broomfield, Colorado.
The 12 bout MMA event was titled UNDISPUTED, as there will be a total of Three ROF Championships contested that night. The promotion’s Light Heavyweight, Heavy weight, and Flyweight titles will all be up for grabs.
HEAVY WEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP
One of the feature bouts of the evening will be in the Heavy Weight division with a contest for the vacant Ring of Fire Championship. UFC veteran Sherman TANK Pendergarst (10-7) will lock up with undefeated and number one ranked Shane MONSTER Carwin (7- 0).
Pendergarst stands 6’1 and tips the scale at 240 lbs. He is a former Collegiate wrestler and State High School wrestling champion with a background in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Boxing and Kick boxing. He is the current and 2X defending World Fight League Super HeavyWeight Champion. Pendergarst joined the world famous Miletich Fighting Sytems camp in 2006. He is coming off a submission victory over Kyle Olson at the DFC in October of this year.
Carwin is a former Division II national wrestling champion and Division II All-American football player . Hailing from Greeley, Colorado, Carwin was introduced to MMA through UFC and Pride veteran Ron “H20″ Waterman. Carwin now trains with Nate Marquardt, Christian Allen and Trevor Wittman. He stands 6’4” and weighs 265 lbs. Carwin is undefeated with an impressive 7-0 record. He has finished all of his opponents via tko or submission, and none of his opponents have been able to survive the first round. Carwin is coming off a submission win over Strikeforce veteran Rex Richards.
Sherman THE TANK Pendergarst:
“It’s a great honor to to fight for the Ring Of Fire belt. The event has a great reputation and has produced great champions. As far as my opponent Carwin goes, I think it’s going to be a good fight. He’s a wrestler, I’m a wrestler. He’s big for a heavyweight, I’m big for a heavyweight. Our fighting style is the same so I think it is going to come down to who has the better stand up skills. I think my striking is better so I wouldn’t be surprised if I end it by K.O. If not then I see a long hard battle fought by two strong guys which is what you want to see for a title match. I know the fans will enjoy it! ”
Shane THE MONSTER Carwin
“I am taking this fight very seriously. I am extremely excited for the chance to fight for the ROF belt and to face a UFC veteran at the same time. I think Sherman could be my toughest opponent yet so I have really stepped up my training. I know he comes from a good camp now, but I train with the best guys in Colorado. I have worked with a world class boxing coach and I am ready to let my hands go! I want the belt and I also want to perform well for the fans and I want to keep my undefeated record intact. I am in great shape and am 100% physically. I can’t wait!”
