WBC ANNOUNCEMENT: MCCLINE WILL FACE PETER

WORLD BOXING COUNCIL NEWS
September 26, 2007 – Mexico City.
From WBC President Jose Sulaiman:
The WBC is naming Jameel McCline from the USA as the next challenger for the new interim heavyweight champion of the world, Samuel Peter from Nigeria, in order to take special actions to save the date of October 6 at the legendary Madison Square Garden in New York, as the WBC heavyweight title can not continue being frozen after 10 months of inactivity, and at least for four more months for the recovery of the injured champion Oleg Maskaev.
McCline was taken out of number 9 position of the WBC ratings when he became unavailable for the WBC title by fighting the former champion of the WBA, Nicolay Valuev from Russia. McCline had won the first two rounds, but lost by TKO in the third round when he injured his knee and could not continue the fight.
The WBC had received an appeal from McCline’s manager, Mr. Scott Hirsch, which was answered favorably by the WBC because of the unquestionable merits of McCline to be rated within the first 10 of the world. The fighting record of McCline is of 48 fights, out of which he has won 38, 23 by KO, lost 7, and drawn 3. Samuel Peter has a record of 28 wins, one loss, and 0 draws, with 22 of his wins by KO.
The WBC Rules and Regulations give explicit authority to the WBC Board of Governors to take any action to resolve any special circumstance, as the WBC believes this to be the case. McCline has been training and in good shape, as he was training to fight Vitali Klitschko at the end of September before that fight was cancelled due to Vitali’s injury.
The WBC Board of Governors ruled to mandate Samuel Peter to make his next defense of the title against Jameel McCline.
MCDONAGH COMEBACK UNDERWAY

McDonagh makes comeback
Peter McDonagh has his first fight this year on October 5th aiming to put himself in the frame for the British Lightweight Title.
Norwich’s Jon Thaxton defends his British Title against Dave Stewart (Ayr/London) at the York Hall in Bethnal Green, on a Hennessy Sports show in
partnership with Title Sponsors GoldenPalace.net. Sky Sports will televise.
McDonagh, from Bermondsey, will fight in a four-round bout on the undercard and believes he is good enough to fight the winner of Thaxton-Stewart.
The 29-year-old hopes to be given an eliminator for the title after impressively stopping Michael Gomez, the former British super-featherweight champion, for the Irish Lightweight Title, last year.
“I’ve won my last four now and this is a chance for me to look good and show people what I can do,” said McDonagh, who is trained by Paul Cook.
“I had a bit of hand damage and have not been able to get a fight which is why I haven’t fought this year. I have been avoided.
“This is going to be a big year for me. I want the British Title so will fight Thaxton or Stewart. I deserve a chance after beating Gomez and want an eliminator at least.
“I was selected as the opponent against Gomez. But I was given 12 weeks to prepare for it and I showed what I can do. When I step up now, I’m not going to take any chances and will stop people rather than letting it go to points.
“Things are going really well under Paul Cook where I have got great sparring with the likes of Kevin Mitchell, Nicky Cook and Colin Lynes.”

Stewart ready for Thaxton
Dave Stewart has been training in the Alps for his attempt to follow in the footsteps of his heroes Jim Watt and Ken Buchanan.
Stewart aims to become British lightweight champion just like his fellow Scotsmen Buchanan and Watt did in the sixties and seventies.
Stewart, from Ayr but based in east London, challenges Norwich’s British champion Jon Thaxton at the York Hall in Bethnal Green, on a Hennessy Sports show in
partnership with Title Sponsors GoldenPalace.net. Sky Sports will televise.
To get himself ready for Thaxton’s second defence, Stewart has been training at altitude in France.
“For me to be British champion would be a dream come true. The likes of Jim Watt and Ken Buchanan held the same belt and they were heroes of mine,” said Dave.
“Jim Watt may even be commentating for Sky TV on the night at ringside. He is a hero of mine and I always listen to what he has to say.
“It was really good over there for hill sprints and the altitude made it really hard to train over.
“We were near Mont Blanc, right up in the Alps, and it has got me in great shape.
“I’ve got a lot of respect for Jon and I’m prepared to work really hard on the night. I want to test myself against the very best. He’s the number one lightweight in Britain so it’s a real test for me.”
Stewart lost a previous British title fight to fellow Hennessy Sports boxer Lee Meager last year, but feels he will put up a stronger challenge this time.
“We’ve both fought Lee but it doesn’t mean a thing,” said Dave. “I’m learning all the time and I’m better educated about the weight now than I was against Lee.
“I’m a tall lightweight, but I’ve made the weight easy for this fight because I know more about nutrition.”

His woman then ditches him for that (rich) guy – a tool bearing promises of a stable life in the Beverly Hills flats, while his 12-year-old daughter is getting felt up at school. What’s a guy to do?
If you’re Hank Moody (David Duchovny), you take all those shriveled life lemons, hand a few to the bartender, order a citron martini for you and that hot chick who just shimmied in the door, and tickle her fancy just long enough until she agrees to takes you home. CFFC set to take Atlantic City by Storm on October 12th
By: Rob “Chi-Cho’s” Toscano (RobertToscano@hotmail.com)
What a difference a year makes. Just last June, Cage Fury Fighting Championships was holding its inaugural event at Boardwalk Hall, in Atlantic City, in front of about 2,000 screaming fans. Fast forward a little more than one year later, and CFF6 is set to explode at The Trump Taj Mahal, in Atlantic City, NJ. The amount of talent on hand is staggering, punctuated by two title fights, as well as a few big names taking the plunge into their first MMA bout ever. October 12th promises to be a night of fights not soon forgotten.
Main Card:
Kimbo Slice vs. David “Tank” Abbott
Ricardo Almeida vs. Dennis Hallman
Derrick Panza vs. Duke Roufus
Devidas Taurosevicius vs. Chris Ligouri (NABC Lightweight Title Fight)
Jim Miller vs. Chris Brennan (CFFC Lightweight Title Fight)
Marcio “Pe de pano” Cruz vs. TBA
Undercard :
Mike Littlefield vs. Jose Rodriguez
Jarrid Palmer vs. John Doyle
Malachy Friedman vs. Anthony Morrison
Kimbo Slice vs. Tank Abbot
This fight has “Fireworks” written all over it. Internet superstar, turned Mixed Martial Artist, Kimbo Slice, returns for the second time in Cage Fury to prove that his first win was not a fluke. Kimbo looked far removed from his street fighting persona, which made him an internet legend, in his last fight where he dispatched former Heavyweight Boxing Champion, Ray Mercer, in under two minutes of the first round. He will be taking on Heavy-handed MMA legend David “Tank” Abbot who has amassed a record of 9 wins and thirteen loses spanning over his 12 year career. Tank looks to redeem himself as he has lost his last three fights in various organizations. However, Tank has proven time and time again that you should never count him out as he can end a fight with just one punch.
Ricardo Almeida vs. Dennis Hallman
Ricardo “Cachorrao” Almeida (8-2-0) is an accomplished Mixed Martial Artist as well as a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt under the legendary Renzo Gracie. Ricardo has fought for many MMA organizations including Pride, UFC, and Pancrase, taking on MMA stars such as Matt “The Law” Lindland, Andrei Semenov and Nate Marquardt along the way. This will be Almeida’s first fight since May of 2004. Almeida, on the comeback path, will be taking on Dennis “Superman” Hallman who sports an impressive record of 37 wins, 12 loses and 2 draws. Hallman’s fight record reads as a proverbial “Who’s who” of MMA fighters including former bouts with Matt Hughes, Jens Pulver, Caol Uno, and Frank Trigg, among others. This promises to be a superb match as both fighters have excellent ground skills, and both look to impress in their Cage Fury debuts.
Derrick Panza vs. Duke Roufus
This is one of the most intriguing matches on the card. Two legendary Kickboxers, stepping into the cage under the Cage Fury banner, for their first MMA fight. Duke Roufus, who has trained many top contenders in Kickboxing and MMA alike, is a Muay Thai Kickboxing prodigy who is also the Former ISKA, WKA, WAKO & IKF World Heavyweight Champion. Most of his 30-plus wins came via knockout before announcing his retirement from the ring back in 2002. Roufus takes on 3 time World Heavyweight Kickboxing Champion, Derrick Panza. Panza has made several forays into the world of Combat Sports, acquiring a record of 19-0 in Full Contact Kickboxing, a record of 7-0 in Boxing, as well as making several appearances in Chuck Norris’ World Combat League. This could be a proverbial “Striking Clinic” for all the Cage Fury fans to witness.
Devidas Taurosevicius vs. Chris Ligouri
Devidas Taurosevicius (7-2-0) is a returning Cage Fury veteran, and current NABC Lightweight Champion, that sports a perfect record under the Cage Fury banner. His last loss was to UFC lightweight standout, Frank Edgar, back in August of 2006, but since then Devidas has been on a 4 fight win streak that he does not want to end. In order to keep his perfect Cage Fury record, Devidas must get past talented MMA fighter Chris Ligouri. Ligouri (7-5-0) is coming off a slick submission win at 55 seconds of round one against Dorian Price at CFFC 4. Chris, like Devidas, is also riding a four fight win streak and looks to continue that trend in this fight. One thing is for sure, one fighter will be handed his first loss in the last five fights come October 12th.
Jim Miller vs. Chris Brennan
Cage Fury Fighting Championships Lightweight Title holder, Jim Miller, comes into this fight sporting a professional record of 7 wins and 1 loss. Jim secured his title back in April of this year with a win over Al Buck, and went on to successfully retain his title with a win over Anthony Morrison two months later. Miller puts his CFFC Lightweight Title on the line when he faces off against Chris “The Westside Strangler” Brennan. Brennan (19-11-1) has steadily improved his fight record with 18 of his 19 wins coming via submission. Chris has been a constant figure in MMA competing in top organizations over the past 11 years, but this will be his first fight for CFFC.
Marcio (Pe de pano) Cruz vs. TBA
Marcio “Pe De Pano” Cruz, trained under the legendary Marco Ruas, has accumulated a record of 3 wins and 2 losses. His last win came via DQ of his opponent Rafael Feijao, after an illegal head kick in the 3rd round, back in June of this year. Cruz’s only two loses have been to MMA powerhouse’s Andrei Arlovski and Jeff Monson. Marcio’s most impressive win was over former UFC Heavyweight Title holder, Frank Mir, in February 2006 where Cruz unleashed a brutal Ground and Pound attack for which Mir had no answer for. Cruz’s opponent has not been named as of the writing of this article, however you can bet that “Pe De Pano” will be ready for anyone that steps in the cage with him.
Malachy Friedman vs. Anthony Morrison
Malachy Friedman (1-1-0) began his professional mixed martial arts career in 2006, at CFFC 1, winning his debut fight via guillotine choke over Brian Vanes in the second round. Friedman’s second fight took place at CFFC 2 against Al Buck. Despite coming out aggressive and almost finishing Buck with a rear naked choke, the fight was stopped when Al Buck unleashed a furious display of ground and pound at 3:40 of the 1st round. Anthony Morrison (6-3-0) is a familiar face to CFFC fans, as he has fought in every CFFC event except CFFC 3. Morrison will be fighting once again on his home turf as he fights out of Joe Diamond’s Atlantic City Mixed Martial Arts Academy. Morrison has been compared to a smaller version of Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, and even stole a page out of Rampage’s book when he slammed Spencer Paige at CFFC 4.
Jarred Palmer vs. John Doyle
Jarred Palmer (3-0-0) training out of CNYMMA, looks to keep his perfect record intact as he faces off against John Doyle (4-1-0). Jarred is known as a heavy handed striker, with two of his three wins coming via TKO, and his third via submission due to strikes. John Doyle has fought for several organizations such as Extreme Challenge and Combat in the Cage, but this will be his first time stepping up as a fighter for Cage Fury. John’s only loss was to Hector Urbina at Extreme Challenge 74 due to a choke, but since then, has won his last two fights.
Mike Littlefield vs. Jose Rodriguez
Mike Littlefield (5-2-0) returns to Cage Fury after being stopped by Tamden McCrory at CFFC 2. Littlefield is one of the founding members of the “Boneyard” in Boston, MA, and will be stepping into the cage to face Jose Rodriguez. Rodriguez (3-8-0) trains out of the Rhino Fight Team in Brick, NJ. Rodriguez’s last fight was a tough decision loss to Dan Miller at CFFC4. With both fighters coming off a loss, expect both to come out looking for redemption.
Cage Fury Fighting Championships 6: Heavy Hands, will take place on October 12th at Trump’s Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, NJ. Tickets are on sale soon. All bouts are live and subject to change.
MASKAEV PULL OUT OF PETER FIGHT IS NO SURPRISE
Posted on | September 26, 2007 | 1 Comment
Oleg Maskaev’s pulling out of his scheduled fight with Samuel Peter came as no surprise to boxing fans. Maskaev had shown no interest in getting in the ring with the hard-hitting contender, who twice beat James Toney to earn the right to challenge for the WBC title. Maskaev had continued to try to avoid Peter, and looked to defend against the inactive Vitali Klitschko instead. But the WBC mandated the defense against Samuel Peter.
I was convinced in August that it was a matter of time until Maskaev could identify an injury that would keep him from fighting Peter. A week ago, the two participated in a ceremony at the Madison Square Garden, in which the historic ring was donated to the International Hall of Fame. Samuel said he was sorry that he would not be winning the title in that “sacred” ring, but expressed his delight at being the first man who would win the heavyweight title in the new one.
Maskaev looked and sounded like a defeated man. I was sure that there was no way he would actually fight Peter. When he was young, he was knocked out by David Tua, Kirk Johnson, Lance Whitaker, and Corey Sanders. And Oliver McCall TKOed Oleg in one round. Since winning the title from Hasim Rahman on 8-12-06, his only defense was against Peter Okhello in December. He was hoping to make a large payday without fighting someone like Peter.
The WBC has named Samuel Peter the “interim” champion. Under their rules, Maskaev might keep the title stagnate for another year. Hopefully, either Oleg will do the right thing, and retire, or the WBC will recognize that he has no intention of fighting Peter, and strip him of the title.
There are questions about who, if anyone, Samuel Peter will fight in October. There are at least four possibilities. Rumor has it that the most likely opponent is Andrew Golota. He is scheduled to fight Kevin McBride on the undercard of the Peter v Maskaev match. After being blasted out in one round by Lamon Brewster, and being inactive for 24 months, he came back to TKO journeyman Jeremy Bates in June. His record is 39-6-1, with 32 KOs. His history includes the ugly loss to Riddick Bowe in the Garden in 1996.
Undefeated Travis Walker has challenged Peter. His record is 15-0-1, with 9 KOs. His last two opponents had records of 2-12-1 and 10-13-1 before losing to Walker. The relatively unknown fringe contender is frustrated by his inability to get a “big” fight, and is actually being polite in asking the Peter camp to give him a chance.
John Ruiz, who last won a fight when he got off the canvas twice to decision Golota in November, 2004, has announced that he is prepared to fight Samuel Peter. Ruiz is 41-7-1-1, with 28 KOs. He is best remembered for his series with Evander Holyfield, and for losing to Roy Jones, Jr. John’s last three fights were the “no contest” with James Toney; a disputed loss to Nikolay Valuev; and a loss to Ruslan Chagaev.
Another possibility could be Jameel McCline. He had been scheduled to fight Vitali Klitschko on 9-22, until Klitschko ducked out due to a reported back injury. McCline had then been added to the Peter-Maskaev undercard, against DaVarryl Williamson. The journeyman Williamson had been one of Vitali’s sparring partners, and had raised questions about the reason that Klitschko opted to not fight McCline.
Promoter Don King should be making a decision about who Samuel Peter will be fighting soon. Any time two big heavyweights are in the ring, anything can happen. And it can be hard to go from preparing for one opponent, to a substitute. However, Peter’s camp has enough time to make those adjustments.
Each of the four could be interesting. Golota had the tools to be a great heavyweight, but did not show the mental strength in his big fights. If he didn’t freeze with fear, he might give Peter a heck of a fight. But he is a
year older than Maskaev, and age slows the reflexes needed to avoid a young puncher’s power.
Travis Walker has shown limited ability. One assumes that King might consider him in order to promote two undefeated heavyweights, and to showcase Peter’s explosive knockout power. But there is always a risk in
fighting a 6’4″ undefeated heavyweight.
John Ruiz was a capable journeyman, who is largely unappreciated by the casual fan, because his style is not exciting. However, he has to be recognized as an intelligent fighter, who frequently enters the ring with a
well thought out plan to frustrate his opponent. He would attempt to make a fight against Peter a wrestling match, and to tire the less experienced fighter out by the middle rounds. However, John is 35, and his prime is well behind him.
McCline would be most likely to give Peter a tough fight. He has been preparing to upset Klitschko, then challenge Peter after he KOed Maskaev. Both Klitschko and Maskaev have been eliminated from this mini-tournament, and Don King might do well to simply schedule the finals for the Madison Square Garden card. It would sell out the Garden.

9:05 Matt Valenti- New Assistant Head Coach at Columbia-What was your weight class?
125 lbs for 2 years; 133 for 2 years (won two NCAA championships at 133) Why did you
want to become a wrestler? My Dad was a wrestler and my coach from the day I started
walking. The most difficult thing about wrestling is: Believing in your heart that you are
better than the guy who is across the mat from you. Many can believe it in their heads,
but few believe it in their hearts. Why do you like coaching with Coach Buckley?
He’s very open to the different styles of wrestling. Every wrestler is different and unique in
his own way. Coach Buckley allows each guy to embrace that and work with his strengths.

KESSLER’S SPARRING PARTER MAKING A COMEBACK

Barker to make comeback on October 5
Darren Barker is getting ready for his October 5th comeback by sparring with WBA and WBC super-middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler this week.
The Barnet Southern Area middleweight champion has not fought since death of his brother, Gary, in a car accident last December.
Undefeated Barker, who won a gold medal at the 2002 Commonwealth Games, will return to action on the undercard of Jon Thaxton’s British Lightweight Title defence against Dave Stewart at the York Hall in Bethnal Green, in a Hennessy Sports show in partnership with GoldenPalace.com which will be televised live by Sky Sports.
The 23-year-old is in Copenhagen helping Kessler’s preparations for his world title unification fight against Britain’s Joe Calzaghe in November.
“It has been great experience sparring with Kessler and I’m more than holding my own,” said Barker, who is short-listed for the Boxing Writers’ Young Boxer of the Year award.
“I’m over here for a week and the quality he has got means the sparring is really beneficial for me. He’s at the pinnacle of his game and a double world champion and sparring with someone like that can only bring you on. I’ve picked up some things which will be useful.
“I needed the time out of the ring to get it together but now I’m more hungry than ever.
“I’m supposed to be fighting again on November 2. I want to keep winning and then those title fights will come my way.”
