Michael Oliveira has heavy hitters in corner

WBC Latino title fight vs. Soto, Saturday night in Sao Paulo, Brazil

SAO PAULO, Brazil (July 13, 2011) – Undefeated prospect Michael “The Brazilian Rocky” Oliveira will have some heavy hitters supporting him Saturday night – Hall of Famer Eder “Golden Bantam” Jofre and former world light heavyweight champion Glen “Road Warrior” Johnson – when he enters the ring against Dominican veteran Jose “Minguito” Soto, headlining the “Sao Paulo Fight Night” pro-am boxing card, presented by MO Productions, at Credicard Hall in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

 

The 21-year-old Oliveira (14-0, 11 KOs), now rated No. 18 by the World Boxing Council (“WBC”), takes on Soto (24-7-2, 13 KOs) in the 10-round main event for the vacant WBC Latino middleweight championship.

 

“Sao Paulo Fight Night” will air live on TV Globo Network, SporTV cable, GloboEsporte and TV Globo International, as well as TYC Sports in Argentina, and streaming for free outside of Brazil and Argentina for free on www.BoxingChannel.tv.

 

Oliveira, the two-time defending Brazilian International Press Award’s Athlete of the Year (2009 and 2010), was born in Sao Paulo but he moved two weeks after birth with his family to Miami. He will be fighting for the third time in Brazil as part of a six-fight, two-year deal with TV Global.

 

Jofre (72-2-4, 50 KOs) is a four-time, two-division world champion who is considered the greatest Brazilian boxer of all-time and arguably the best bantamweight ever. He has supported Oliveira and MO Productions in their quest to popularize boxing once again in Brazil. Oliveira and Johnson train in the same Miami gym and have become friends.

 

“I’m honored to have Mr. Jofre supporting me at my fight once again,” Michael said. “He is a living legend, not only in Brazil, but in the entire boxing world. I was privileged to walk the great Glen Johnson into the ring for his last fight. I’ve learned a lot from him, in and out of the ring, and I’m very happy that he is here in Brazil for my fight.”

 

Brazil’s last superstar boxer, four-time world champion Acelino “Popo” Freitas, made his third World Boxing Organization super featherweight title defense in Credicard Hall, one of the largest show arenas in South America, when he knocked out challenger Javier Jauregui in 2000.

 

Several amateur matches featuring some of Brazils top Olympic boxers will be part of the “Sao Paulo Fight Night” card, in addition to one other pro fight between Sao Paulo light middleweights – Jailton “Dragao Branco” De Jesus Souza (12-2, 10 KOs) and Douglas Ataibe (1-0, 1 KO) in a six-round bout.

Douglin tops McCants in Atlantic City!

Morganville, NJ (July 12, 2011) – Well regarded junior middleweight prospect Denis “Da Mommas Boy” Douglin outpointed hard-nosed Philadelphian Philip McCants over six rounds last Saturday evening at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, NJ.

Fighting for the first time since a shocking loss in February, Douglin effectively outboxed McCants, connecting with jabs, hooks and hard straight left hands throughout the contest. McCants proved to be game and displayed a great chin, but Douglin’s skillful performance earned him a clear-cut unanimous decision victory.

Scores were 60-54 twice and 58-56.

“It felt great to finally get back in the ring,” said Douglin, who had a bevy of fans cheering him on. “I had a very serious training camp and what happened in my last fight made me work even harder.”

He was also glad to get rounds in against a credible opponent.

“I’m glad I fought a tough opponent. I didn’t want to face a guy that would go down if I breathed in his direction. Phillip McCants is a solid fighter and this was the start of a new beginning.”

Douglin, who improved to 13-1 with 8 knockouts, has already returned to the gym and expects his next bout to be announced shortly.

A conference call was held today to discuss the12-Round IBF Super Lightweight Elimination bout between the Dominican Republic’s once-beaten IBF #3-rated Victor “Mermelada” Cayo (20-1, 18 KOs) and Washington DC’s IBF #4-ranked Lamont Peterson (24-1-1, 14 KOs) on Friday, July 29, in the Chelsea Ballroom at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas and live on ESPN Friday Night Fights.

 

The showdown pits two of the world’s best super lightweights facing each other for the right to face the winner of the July 23 unification match between current IBF king Zab Judah and WBA champion Amir Khan.

 

Both fighters and their camps were very respectful to each other and both made their intentions clear should they win the high-stakes match-up: They both want Amir Khan next.

Also scheduled for the July 29 fight night is a sensational 10-round light heavyweight showdown between Edison “Pantera” Miranda (34-5, 29 KOs) and Yordanis Despaigne (8-1, 4 KOs).

Hello to all the fans in the Dominican Republic and worldwide. I had a great training camp in Oxnard, California, and I’m ready to go 12 rounds or finish by KO. I will be victorious.

 

How were you impacted by having to cancel the fight’s initial date of April 29 due to injury?

I had a very painful injury in my arm and I had no choice but to pull out of the fight because I want to be 100% and not lose this opportunity. Now after a couple months, I feel great and every minute I wait is too long to get in the ring and prove to everyone who Victor Cayo is.

 

Did you watch much tape of your opponent?

I watched several tapes, but I don’t rely on them too much because every fight is a different story. I will respond in the ring and make changes as I need to. I never really make a plan based on tapes I watch.

 

Who would you rather fight, Amir Khan or Zab Judah?

Amir Khan. Definitely I prefer to fight Amir Khan because it’d be a more exciting fight. He comes forward and he’s a good fighter, probably one of the best 140 lb’ers at this moment. If I win, I would love to fight Amir Khan.

 

Describe Lamont Peterson as a fighter.

Lamont is a warrior. He will come to fight. He’s a real professional and a very good boxer with a lot of heart. He gives everything in the ring, so I expect to have a very grueling fight and the best man will win. I have a lot of respect for Lamont.

 

What are you concentrating on in training right now?

The last few weeks, I’ve been fighting very hard and training very hard and I only have minor things I’m left working on.

 

LAMONT PETERSON

 

I’m looking forward to it and I know it’ll be a good fight. I love fighting the top guys in the division and Victor Cayo is one of them. This fight has been coming for a while; we were supposed to fight April 29, but I know things happen in training camp. Victor Cayo got hurt. It actually gave me a chance to heal up because I was nursing an injury too. So I think it works out for the better for both of us. I’m anxious to get in the ring and get it on because this is a big fight and it’ll lead to an even bigger fight.

 

How were you impacted by Cayo cancelling the fight’s initial date of April 29 due to injury?

For me, I had a neck and shoulder injury and trouble moving around, so I was confused about whether I should fight or pull out, but now I’m 100%. It worked out for me. I think I’ve had more time to focus on Victor’s style and game plan. It was a good thing.

 

Did you watch much tape of your opponent?

I like to make my adjustments in the ring because a lot of times, for example, I can watch his fight with Marcos Maidana and he’s not going to fight me that way – we’re two different fighters. I just worry about what I’m working on in the gym and what I’m training to do. I’ll figure it out when I get there. I have 12 rounds to do so, so I won’t be in a rush to go in there and do anything.  I’ll take my time and figure it out and go from there.

 

Who would you rather fight, Khan or Judah?

Probably Khan, because I’m fighting Victor Cayo. Their styles and body types are the same, so it better prepares me for that fight, instead of Zab, who is a southpaw and shorter with a different style of fighting.

 

Describe Cayo as a fighter.

Overall he is a very good fighter who is not lacking in anything. He has good speed and power and avoids punches well and works upstairs and downstairs well. He uses the jab well. He’s well-rounded and, overall, a solid, very good fighter.

 

What are you concentrating on in training right now?

Just sharpness. I’m already in the best shape I can be in, so I’m just maintaining right now and making sure everything is good. I’m just working on sharpness and reacting on everything pretty quick.

Hill, a resident of nearby Pleasantville, New Jersey isn’t your ordinary first time promoter as she has some unique experiences that she brings to the game.

The 30-year-old Kevlishvili (pronounced kev-LISH-vuh-lee) stepped in after Joselito Collado withdrew from the eight-round junior lightweight bout late last week with the flu.

 

In the main event of a Top Rank-promoted event at Texas Station Gambling Hall & Hotel in Las Vegas,  undefeated local favorite and world-ranked southpaw, Diego Magdaleno (19-0, 7 KOs), of Las Vegas, will  defend his North American Boxing Federation (NABF) junior lightweight title against Alejandro “Alacran’’ Perez (15-2-1, 10 KOs), of Salinas, Calif.

 

A long-time top amateur in Russia who turned pro at 27, Kevlishvili is a well-conditioned, versatile boxer with excellent movement and durability. At his best when he can set a busy pace and outwork you, Kevlishvili will be making his third start in the United States since relocating to Philadelphia and hooking up with manager Lev Prysler in April 2010.

 

Kevlishvili has been involved in close fights in each of his U.S. starts this year. In his stateside debut and initial outing in 15½ months, he won a six-round split decision over Anthony Flores last March 18 at Chester, Pa.  Last May 20 in Costa Mesa, Calif., Kevlishvili dropped a close eight-round decision to Southern California prospect Ronny Rios (13-0 going in) in a good fight that featured a number of shifts in momentum. Kevlishvili cut Rios over the left eye, but fell short by the scores of 77-75 twice and 78-74.

 

The 5-foot-7 Kevlishvili turned pro in Russia on Dec. 13, 2007, and won his first seven fights.

Danny Dyer Joins Kevin Mitchell For Final Training Session Ahead of Saturday’s Showdown with John Murray

Earlier today Dagenham’s Kevin Mitchell undertook his final training session at the TRAD TKO Boxing Gym in Canning Town, for his career defining showdown with Manchester’s John Murray at the Echo Arena in Liverpool this coming Saturday.

Joining Kevin, and the attending media, for the public workout was Canning Town’s most famous son, actor Danny Dyer.

Danny, who has starred in such notable films as Borstal Boy, Mean Machine and The Football Factory amongst many others, took Kevin on the pads during the session, after which he said,  “I’ve done it a little bit before, just fucking about with cage fighters and that, my arsehole is still shaking, that was some strong digs there.

Honestly I’ve been a fan of Kevin’s for a while now. It’s just nice to be around him and watch him, you know training and stuff.

I’m just looking forward to Saturday and know for a fact that he’s going to do the geezer, there’s no two ways about it.

It’s the only way, it’s Kevin’s time now. He had a bit of rick, maybe a kick up the arse, it’s probably what he needed and I know for a fact that he’s going to get stronger and stronger, so unlucky Murray you’ve had a good run but it’s tat tahavitch.”

A smiling Kevin then added, “Danny’s a good pad man, held his hands up close and took some good hits.” before moving on to talk about his final day of preparations, “I’ve done really well, weights spot on before training, I’ve dropped 3 or 4 lbs so will be just the one, maybe two pounds over

Going really well, sharp. I didn’t go too mad in the gym, you don’t want to go too mad in the gym at this point. Saturday’s when I want to be peaking.”

After the final session Kevin’s coaches, father and son team Jimmy and Mark Tibbs gave their view of his final day’s preparation, first Jimmy said “Yeah, all the heavy training’s finished. His weight’s bang on, perfect. We can’t do no more now, everything’s done and we’re ready.” after which Mark added, “He’s done everything that’s been expected from him and more. His weight is perfect, he’s in a hundred and ten percent condition bodily wise, mentally wise. Now he’s got to hold it together until the end of this week.”

Final word has to go to promoter Francis Warren who said “It’s a big, big fight , it’s obviously been highly anticipated for the last couple of years.

I’ve been to both their training camps now and they’re both looking really sharp, really on the ball.

It’s a hard one to call so unfortunately I’ll have to sit on the fence on this one.”

Kevin Mitchell versus John Murray, for the WBO Inter-Continental Lightweight title will feature on Ricky Burns’ defense of his WBO World Super Featherweight crown against Nicky Cook at the Echo Arena in Liverpool on Saturday 16th July 2011.
