Dirrell Faces Engel in Friday Night Fights

Main Event on July 22   On Friday, July 22, 2011, at the Morongo Casino Resort in Cazabon, California, and live on ESPN Friday Night Fights, Gary Shaw Productions will proudly present Fight Night at Morongo Casino Resort, featuring Flint, Michigan’s WBC #4-rated contender Anthony “The Dog” Dirrell (22-0, 19 KOs) taking on Saint Louis, Missouri’s Kevin “Hitman” Engel (18-4, 15 KOs) in the 10-round super middleweight main event.   26-year-old Dirrell, the brother of Olympic bronze medallist Andre, will be looking to stay unbeaten while he waits for a world title shot. He was last seen in front a huge hometown crowd in Michigan, stopping former Olympian Dante Craig in five rounds with a body shot. Against Dirrell, 31-year-old Engel will be looking to pull the same kind of upset magic he sprung on up-and-coming contender Darryl Cunningham in 2007.   The televised co-feature will pit Houston’s once-beaten Lanard Lane (12-1, 7 KOs) against Winter Haven, Florida’s undefeated knockout artist Joseph Elegele (12-0, 10 KOs) in a welterweight 10-rounder.   A full-time firefighter, 28-year-old Lane will be looking to extinguish the unbeaten streak of 27-year-old southpaw Elegele.   On the undercard, Austin, Texas’s undefeated Kurtiss Colvin (5-0, 4 KOs) will face Long Beach, California’s Cleveland Ishe (3-1, 1 KO) in a middleweight four-rounder;Philadelphia’s Julian Williams (6-0-1, 4 KOs) will take on Bakersfield, California’s Raul Rodriguez (2-5-1, 1 KO) in a junior middleweight six-rounder; undefeated Californian Marcus Robinson (3-0) will go against Mexico’s Mario Evangelista (3-9, 3 KOs) over six junior middleweight rounds; San Ardo, California’s undefeated Roman Morales (4-0, 3 KOs) will face Santa Rosa, California’s Juan Tepoz (4-5-1) in a featherweight four-rounder; and Palmdale, California’s DonYil Livingston (4-0, 2 KOs) will face an opponent that is still TBA in a middleweight four-rounder.

 

Shaw Signs Heavyweight Franklin Lawrence

Gary Shaw Productions is proud to announce the signing of a true late bloomer in the sport of boxing, Indianapolis, Indiana, heavyweight Franklin “Yah Yah” Lawrence.

 

The 35-year-old Lawrence (15-2-2, 10 KOs), who didn’t turn pro until his late 20s, is undoubtedly the hottest heavyweight prospect in boxing.

 

He won the vacant IBO Inter-Continental heavyweight title in September 2009 with a seventh-round stoppage of long-time top contender Lance “Mount” Whitaker.

 

Then, on January 29 of this year, Lawrence won the vacant WBC Caribbean Boxing Federation Heavyweight Title by stopping former US Olympian Jason “Big Six” Estrada in 10 at the Turning Stone Casino in New York.

 

Lawrence is the only fighter to ever stop Estrada including top contenders Alexander Povetkin and Tomasz Adamek.

 

He followed that up with his most recent victory, a seven-round beating of capable veteran Jason Gavern. Gavern had recently fought to a draw with top contender Jonathon Banks but was no match for the power of Lawrence and after tasting the canvas in rounds one and six, quit on his stool before round eight.

 

In fact, Lawrence would be on a 14-fight win streak if he hadn’t been on the wrong end of a debatable decision to former Heavyweight champion Oliver McCall in August 2009.

 

“Franklin has all the momentum right now in the American heavyweight division and we’re proud to be working with him,” said his new promoter, Gary Shaw. “His quality of opposition is unmatched by any of the other prospects and that shows his willingness to mix it up with anyone, any time. That’s the kind of hunger we are always looking for. We see big things in his immediate future.”

 

“HDNET FIGHTS: SHARK FIGHTS 17” – LIVE THIS FRIDAY NIGHT ON HDNET

Rosholt v. Horwich and Rodriguez v. Knothe set to collide – putting a combined twenty-three fight win streak on the line – Friday, July 15 at 10:00 p.m. ET

DALLAS (JULY 13, 2011) This Friday, HDNet will present “HDNet Fights: Shark Fights 17” LIVE from the Dr. Pepper Arena in Frisco, Texas.

The event is headlined by former three-time NCAA Heavyweight wrestling champion and top MMA Middleweight prospect Jake Rosholt (11-3), who is facing respected veteran Matt Horwich in a highly anticipated re-match.  Horwich scored a TKO victory in their first meeting last November, handing Rosholt his only loss since departing from the UFC in 2009.

Since that bout, Rosholt has reeled off four straight, first round victories (three by submission and one by TKO), while Horwich dropped a decision to Danillo Villefort in March at “HDNet Fights: Shark Fights 14.” Rosholt is looking to run his post-UFC record to 6-1 and set up a return to the octagon by scoring a solid victory over Horwich.

In the co-main event of the evening, former UFC Heavyweight champion Ricco Rodriguez (46-11) meets Karl Knothe (19-6) – each man putting an impressive string of victories on the line.  Rodriguez is riding an eleven-fight winning streak including three by submission and four by (T)KO.  Knothe enters the bout on a twelve-fight, first round winning streak dating back to 2007, including six TKOs and six submissions.

“It’s a rare opportunity when you get two heavyweights with a 23-fight win streak to step up and fight against each other,” said Andrew Simon, CEO of HDNet Fights.  “On top of that, Jake Rosholt needs to avenge his loss to Horwich to move back up the ladder. Three bouts round out the LIVE card: Emanuel Newton (14-6-1) vs. Illir Latifi (4-1), Erik Perez (7-5) vs. Douglas Frey (9-6), and Daniel Almeida (6-1) vs. Doug Williams (6-12).

THREE BIG TITLE BOUTS FROM CHICAGO THIS FRIDAY ON GFL

Former world Super Lightweight champion Vivian Harris (29-6-1, 19 KO’s) will take on Lanardo Tyner (24-4, 15 KO’s) in a twelve round bout for the USBO Welterweight belt.

Harris of Brooklyn, New York won his first sixteen fights and established himself as one of the prospects in the country.  After suffering his first professional loss and a draw to Ivan Robinson, Harris ripped off nine straights wins which included his world title winning effort when he knocked out Diobelys Hurtado to win the WBA Super Lightweight title.

He defended the title three times which included two wins over German Oktay Urkal in Urkal’s homeland of Germany.

Harris was upset by Carlos Maussa on the Arturo Gatti – Floyd Mayweather undercard on June 25, 2005.

Harris won three straight over former Lightweight champion Stevie Johnston and world title challenger Juan Lazcano which set up a title shot against WBC champion Junior Witter.

Unfortunately Harris was stopped in seven rounds.

Harris is desperate for a win as he has dropped three in a row including being stopped by Lucas Matthysse; currant WBC Welterweight champion Victor Ortiz and his last bout to undefeated prospect Jesse Vargas.

Tyner of Houston, Texas won his first nineteen bouts before dropping fights to former world title challengers Mike Arnaoutis and Lamont Peterson.  Tyner also lasted the distance before losing a twelve round unanimous decision to future WBC Super Welterweight champion Saul Alvarez.

Tyner scored the best win of his career when he upset Antwone Smith in a bout that was telecasted all over America on SHO BOX.

In his last bout, Tyner drew with Adrian Granados.

In a twelve round battle for the IBF Intercontinental Cruiserweight title, Carl Davis (15-3 with eleven knockouts will take on former world title challenger Epifanio Mendonza in a twelve round bout.

Davis of Chicago spent his whole career as a Heavyweight with two of his losses being to then undefeated prospect Travis Walker and former world title challenger DaVarryl Williamson.

In his last bout, which was his first at Cruiserweight, Davis scored a ten round unanimous decision over former world champion Arthur Williams on December 17^th, 2010.

Mendoza of Barranquilla, Colombia is known for his punching prowess as he has amassed a record of 31-12-1 with twenty-seven knockouts.

He won his first sixteen by knockout whicj was highlighted by a first round stoppage over then undefeated Tukunbo Oljiade.

He later stopped undefeated Rubin Williams in forty-two seconds.

In 2007, he was stopped in four by Chad Dawson for the WBC Light Heavyweight title.  In his next bout, Mendoza fought a tough battle with Jeff Lacy in a bout that Lacy got the majority decision victoty but many thought that the verdict should have gone to Mendoza.

Mendoza is coming off a second round stoppage over Josue Avilla on July 10^th.

The third title bout will pit Albert Mensah and Andre Georges for the IBF International Jr. Welterweight title.

Mensah of Accra, Ghana has a record of 23-3-1 with ten knockouts.

He has spent his career in Ghana by winning many regional titles and will be making his American debut.

Georges of Windsor, Ontario has a record of 11-1 with six knockouts and has won three in a row which include wins over Tyner and in his last bout scored a split decision over former world champion DeMarcus “Chop Chop” Corley

HOST AN HOUR OF RADIO WITH MIKE TYSON OR BERNARD HOPKINS

ESPN Radio 1100’s 24 Hour radiothon in Las Vegas offers a chance to bid for the right to co-host an hour of radio with a sports celebrity, and this year Hallf of  Famer Mike Tyson and  Boxing legend Bernard Hopkins are two of those celebrities. To bid, go to www.werlv.com .

All proceeds from the event go to benefit The Caring Place, a facility that provides free services to ease the journey of those touched by Cancer. The Las Vegas facility was co-founded by Connie Bernstein, wife of Showtime Boxing Broadcaster Al Bernstein. For more information, go to www.thecaringplacenv.org .

As always, the event will be held at The Palms Hotel and Resort. Other sports personalities people can bid to co-host with include: Broadcasting icon Brent Musburger,   Football Coach Jim Fassel,   MMA legend Randy Couture, basketball star Larry Johnson, and Showtime Network’s Mixed Martial Arts announcers, Mauro Ranallo, Pat Miletich and Stephen Quadros.

Al Bernstein, who has hosted the event for five years, but this year will be in London calling a boxing match, said, “this event is so much fun. It’s a great opportunity for people to spend an hour on the radio interviewing their favorites.  And the money donated helps The Caring Place provide free services to those touched by Cancer.
