Rocktagon MMA Makes its West Coast Debut on July 23 with “Battle on the Bay” in Richmond, California

Richmond, CA. July 6, 2011 – MMA fans get ready! Ohio’s premier amateur mixed martial arts promotion, Rocktagon MMA, is bringing its highly touted “Amateur Elite” MMA series to the West Coast! “Battle on the Bay” will be Rocktagon MMA’s first fight event in the Western region. The high-octane fight card is stacked with compelling match-ups and A-list talent, including many of California’s rising MMA stars. “Battle on the Bay” will take place on July 23 at the spectacularCraneway Pavilion in Richmond, California.

Rocktagon MMA has sold out many East Coast shows and continues to take highly skilled amateur MMA fighters from obscurity to the National level. The popularity of this fast-rising Ohio based mixed martial arts organization has grown exponentially over the last year and they are now poised to explode onto the national scene. According to the Company’s CEO, James Jeda,Rocktagon MMA President Lorenzo Gentile will spearhead the organizations efforts to expand into other regions.

According to promoter Johnny Fever, “Battle on the Bay” will feature many of those rising stars, including a main event title bout between two hard-hitting California knock out artists in the 145lb division. Richmond native Joe “Nine Lives” Neal (3-0) of Crispim BJJ will battle “Team Punishment” fighter Tom “Bam Bam” Pho (4-0), who trains under Tito Ortiz. Who will emerge as Rocktagon MMA’s first West Coast title holder? Fans will find out on July 23^rd!

The “Battle on the Bay” fight card will showcase elite amateur MMA talent from California’s top MMA fight camps including “Team Punishment” lead by Tito Ortiz,  “Team Black” lead by Dan Black, Crispim BJJ lead by Alexander Crispim, the Assault MMA Team lead by Chris Glynn, andRogue Empire lead by Eugene “The Wolf” Jackson and many others!  The main event title fight is just one of twelve exciting bouts. Peter ‘Kid Chocolate’ Quillin on mission

LOS ANGELES (July 6, 2011) – From the mean streets of Grand Rapids to living in New York and now Hollywood, undefeated middleweight prospect Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin is on the verge of boxing greatness, and is being talked about in boxing circles as being a fighter ready for a high-profile world title fight within a year.

 

Coming off of an explosive third-round destruction of former world title challenger Jesse Brinkley this past April for the USBO super middleweight title, Quillin (24-0, 18 KOs) will return to compete in his natural middleweight division in an old fashioned throw-down with veteran “Marvelous” Tarvis Simms (27-1-1, 11 KOs) in 10-round bout on the July 23 Amir Khan vs. Zab Judah undercard at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.

 

Quillin-Simms will be fought on the off-television portion of the event, while Khan vs. Judah headlines on HBO. “A fight is a fight and my time will come,” IBF # 5 rated Quillin said.“I put in the same effort to put on an impressive winning performance,” IBF #5 rated Quillin said. “The pressure last camp was to see how I would beat Brinkley. This time it’s Tarvis Simms and I’m training to destroy him.

 

“I’m never in a comfortable situation because, in boxing, you can always lose. I figure, why put in anything less than maximum effort in training?I’m trying to prove that I’m an elite, top-10 fighter and, even when I win a world title, I’m always going to be a hungry fighter because of where I come from.After my last fight I went right back in the Wild Card Gym training with Freddie Roach and Eric Brown.I’ve already started back training in the torture chamber (with strength-and-conditioning coach Brad Bose at Anatomi Gym in Santa Monica).”

 

The 40-year-old Simms is 12 years older than Quillin and the twin brother of two-time World Junior Middleweight Champion Travis Simms. His only loss was a 10-round decision to Allan Green two years ago, when he was a late replacement fighting for the first time in 14 months.

 

“What I’m looking for against Simms is rounds,” Quillin explained.“My last three fights were all four rounds or less.I had a first-round knockout in Quebec, followed by a fourth-round TKO, and then stopped a world title challenger in the third. Tarvis is 27-1-1 but he’s stepping-up to fight me, not the other way around. I met him and he’s a cool guy. I’m hoping that he’s preparing as hard as me to put in the rounds and showcase his talent. If he does, it will be an entertaining fight.”

 

No boxer appreciates being active more than “Kid Chocolate,” who was on the shelf for 18 months (2008-2010) with a broken hand, hairline fracture of his eye socket and emergency appendectomy.

 

“Boxing isn’t a job for me because I love it,” Quillin remarked.“I want to stay busy and active and I’m happy Golden Boy got me right back in the ring. I train hard, five hours a day, six days a week and that doesn’t include all of the running I do.I’m like old-time boxers who liked to fight all the time.I want to bring that back to boxing because fans appreciate and enjoy it.

 

“I was a street kid growing up in Grand Rapids. I never thought that I’d be anything in life.I learned from boxing that anything I do, I need to fight for it, in or out of the ring. That’s what gave me the courage to move to Brooklyn and then to California.I’ve been to so many different places because of boxing.I’m hungry to make it big. By  Sensei Alex Urbanik Most people view Professor Vee as one of the great martial arts minds of all time.  However, even this statement is limiting to a man who transcended martial arts.  The spirit and determination which led him to develop all of his martial arts systems were qualities that he brought to every endeavor he approached.  It is this very fighting spirit and determination that Grandmaster Rober Evans has used in his own efforts to embody Professor Vee’s legacy in the Modern Vee Jitsu System of Systems. Not being satisfied with just producing great martial artists, Grandmaster Evans has kept the legacy of Professor Vee alive through his most recent endeavors with the Healthy Heart Project, the Community Wellness Center of America, receiving a Senatorial Proclamation for exemplary service from the state of New York, and as being a mentor to Sensei Greg Pritchett and the athletes of the Modern Vee Jitsu Athletic Training Center in Wilmington, DE.  Every boxer, kick boxer, Veejitsuka, and MMA fighter that trains at the MVJATC takes with them a piece of Professor Vee.  It is through broadening the reach of his teachings to areas outside of the martial arts that Grandmaster Evans promotes and grows the legacy of Professor Vee. Pappas, a Yonkers Police Officer and a native of Yonkers, New York has ripped through his first twelve opponents with seven of them not making it out of the first round.

He has beaten some good opponents such as Chris Ray and Josh Hammock.

The Humble Pappas donates his entire purse to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center which happens to be the number-one cancer research center in the country.

Pappas will take on twenty-seven fight Allen Medina.

Medina of Denver, Colorado has fought top competition such as undefeated Middleweight prospect Patrick Majewski and Miguel Hernandez and is by far the most experienced foe that Pappas has faced.

Owusu was very impressive in his May 5^th bout as he came off an eleven year layoff to win a four round unanimous decision over Juan Perez.

Owusu of Bronx, New York has a record of 7-6 with four knockouts.

CEMENT-HANDED YARBOROUGH ATTRACTING BIG-NAME SUPPORTERS TO KICKBOXING EMPIRE TITLE CARD JULY 30 AT HARD ROCK IN LAS VEGAS

Las Vegas resident Shawn Yarborough expects he will have one of the toughest cheering sections ever assembled when he steps through the ropes to face Belarusian warrior Pavel Turuk in one of the main bouts of the nationally and internationally televised world championship Kickboxing Empire card Saturday, July 30, in The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.   As head Muay Thai coach at the Throwdown Training Center in Las Vegas, Yarborough mentors the striking skills of such high-profile MMA practitioners as Frank Mir, Forrest Griffin, Gilbert Yvel, Evan Dunham, Vitor Belfort and Mike Whitehead, and expects most to be in attendance that night.   “I help them develop their power and skills,” said Yarborough of his noteworthy students. “I evaluate their upcoming opponents’ styles and look for things to capitalize on. I’m a hands-on trainer. I don’t stand off to the side. I’m in the trenches with them. Because I’m also a fighter, I suit up and give them a realistic look at what their opponent will be like by emulating what I see.”   Originally from Norfolk, Va., the 36-year-old Yarborough, who has a record of 13-3-1 with 11 KOs, found his way to combat sports almost accidentally. The former college football player says he was looking for a way to speed recovery from a serious back injury.   “I never intended on being a Muay Thai fighter,” said Yarborough. “I was just trying to rehab myself and find something to do to stay in shape. But after two months of training, I had my first belt test and they were like, ‘Hey, you want to fight?’ I had never even seen a Muay Thai fight before, but I thought it would be cool, so I said, ‘Yeah.’ ”   What followed has been a, thus-far, electrifying career, punctuated by winning the World Boxing Council United States championship as well as the prestigious Kings Cup in Thailand.   Along the way, the cement-handed Yarborough also has scored a number of spectacular knockouts.   “I’ve been hitting hard since I was a little kid,” said Yarborough. “We would put the gloves on in the neighborhood and punch each other and I would always bust their noses and knock them silly. Plus, I usually have a size advantage. I carry my weight well. I have a pretty big frame and I’ve always been just a big 175-lb’er.”   The 6-foot-1-inch Yarborough says he sees little difference between kickboxing and Muay Thai and will have to make only minor adjustments in technique.   “Striking all-around is my thing,” said Yarborough. “I still look at kickboxing as Muay Thai, even though I’m not doing a lot of the clinching and I’m not throwing elbows like I normally do.”   Of his opponent, Turuk, Yarborough expects a difficult test. “It’ll be a hard fight. He’s tough. He’s got good hands and he’s very intense. I know he’s going to bring it and I’m looking forward to it. I’m going to have to slow him down and get it to him as best as I can.”   Heading into a major fight with a cheering section that will include several of the martial arts world’s biggest names, Yarborough may not have envisioned his life turning out this way, but, pun intended, he certainly is getting a kick out of it now.   “I love what I’m doing,” said Yarborough. “I’m really enjoying it. I’m blessed to be able to get up in the morning and look forward to the day.”   The card starts at 7:30 p.m. (PST) July 30 with doors to The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino opening at 6:30.
