N’DOU: KELL BROOK WILL BE A WORLD BEATER
Posted on | June 30, 2011 | No Comments
Australian backs unbeaten Welterweight to rule the World
Lovemore N’dou believes unbeaten Welterweight star Kell Brook is on the brink of winning a World title.
Brook defeated the Australian-based South African in his first outing under new promoters Matchroom Sport, impressing all-comers in his first 12 round fight at the Hillsborough Leisure Centre in his hometown Sheffield.
N’dou has never been stopped in his 63-fight career but in the late stages of the fight, Brook had the sell-out crowd on their feet as the 39 year-old looked ready to go – N’dou held on though and he then told the 25 year-old that he will go all the way.
“Kell gave a great performance and I was the first one to walk up to him after the fight and whisper in his ear that he was going places as a fighter and will become World Champion someday,” said N’dou. “He will eventually win the World title as long as he is not pushed into deeper waters too soon. He has a great promotional company in Matchroom Sport behind him, I like the way they treat fighters. The respect and treatment they gave to my camp was tremendous. He also has a great training team in the Ingles. I wish him all the best in the future.”
“It was a great performance from an up-and-coming prospect. He boxed a lot better than I expected. Kell is very accurate with his power shots. He showed speed, timing, accuracy, ring movement and power. He would have stopped any other fighter on the night but I’m just one of those fighters it’s impossible to stop.”
Brook will be back in the ring in the autumn in Sheffield as he builds towards a World title shot, and as Brook’s star rises, big-name fights are on the agenda. N’dou has a draw with Matthew Hatton on his CV and believes that a fight between Brook and the Mancunian would be a winner.
“It would be a great fight,” said N’dou. “Matthew has one of the toughest chins out there and his fitness is phenomenal. He proved against Saul Alvarez that he can take and handle a big shot. Kell on the other hand has great speed and moves well in the ring. It would be interesting.”
Another fight on the agenda down the line is Brook versus Amir Khan. The pair have been involved in a war of words on Twitter after Khan questioned N’dou’s credentials as an opponent. Brook suggested the pair meet in the ring and now N’dou has had his say on the WBA Light-Welterweight champ’s comments.
“It’s very disappointing for Khan to make comments like that,” said N’dou. “He has to learn to give respect where it is due. He fought a lot of fighters over the hill when he was coming up.
“Khan needs to remember he is very amateurish and that’s why he got knocked out in the past. Don’t be surprised if he gets knocked out again by another nobody.
“Khan beat a shell of Paul Malignaggi who had already been in wars against me and the likes of Miguel Cotto, in fact Malignaggi hasn’t been the same since the last two fights he had against me – Kell Brook has a great chance of beating Khan.”

Live at 11:05 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast) on SHOWTIME®
NEW YORK (June 30, 2011) – In the realm of boxing series, none sticks to its mission statement as closely as the popular ShoBox: The New Generation, which celebrates its 10th anniversary on Friday, July 15, at 11:05 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast) from Texas Station Gambling Hall & Casino in Las Vegas. The Top Rank-promoted doubleheader will feature a night of junior lightweight action with undefeated Diego Magdaleno (19-0, 7 KOs) squaring off against Alejandro Perez (15-2-1, 10 KOs) and Casey Ramos (13-0, 4 KOs) taking on Joselito Collado (12-0, 3 KOs) in a battle of unbeatens.
10th Anniversary Highlights, Stats and Facts …
ShoBox: The New Generation – The Mission
Televise a boxing series to serve as a proving ground for hungry, willing prospects. Thrust young up-and-comers from the anonymity of undercards to the glare of the national spotlight. Match each fighter against his toughest opponent to date and, in the process, expose untested hopefuls – but more importantly – build future champions.
For the last decade, ShoBox has garnered critical acclaim and industry respect by adhering to its central purpose: featuring prospects in pivotal fights where padding the win column stops and their true road to contender status begins. The series is so well defined that it has been added to the boxing lexicon. As characterized by Wikipedia, a “ShoBox fighter” refers to a “quality prospect primed for tougher competition.”
SHOWTIME implemented this decidedly boutique approach with the overall picture in mind.
“Creating a platform for young fighters is something that is not only important to SHOWTIME, but to the sport of boxing generally,” said Ken Hershman, Executive Vice President & General Manager, SHOWTIME Sports®. “With ShoBox, we seek out prospects that are willing to challenge themselves with high-risk bouts in exchange for national exposure. It’s a win-win for all involved, including our subscribers who get the entertainment of competitive fights and an introduction to the new generation of future champions.”
A staggering 87 fighters who fought on ShoBox moved on to challenge for a world title, with 42 of those fighters becoming world champions. The first future champ to emerge from ShoBox dates back to the series’ initial telecast on July 21, 2001. Leonard Dorin scored a ninth-round TKO over fellow unbeaten Martin O’Malley. Two fights later, Dorin was a world champion. With 157 ShoBox telecasts and 42 eventual world titlists, ShoBox enjoys a rough average of featuring a future champion every fourth show.

The Hall Recall – Executive Producer Gordon Hall’s Quintessential ShoBox Fights:
- Juan Urango (13-0) vs. Mike Arnaoutis (10-0-1) – D 12 – Aug. 5, 2004
The Hall Recall: “This fight was an all-out war that ended in a draw and is a classic example of two undefeated, talented fighters facing each other early in their careers on ShoBox.”
- Robert Guerrero (16-0-1) vs. Gamaliel Diaz (19-5-2) – Diaz SD 12 Guerrero – Dec. 2, 2005
The Hall Recall: “A perfect example of a ShoBox fight where the young fighter is tested by the more seasoned fighter who had experience going into the later rounds and could move. Robert lost the fight in a split decision, but more importantly, he learned from the defeat, went on to avenge the loss on ShoBox and later won a world title.’’ - Tim Bradley (21-0) vs. Junior Witter (36-1-3) – Bradley SD 12 Witter – May 10, 2008
The Hall Recall: “Before challenging for the junior welterweight title in Witter’s U.K. backyard, Bradley had never fought outside of California and was coming off the longest layoff of his career. Bradley’s knockdown of Witter in the sixth round was the turning point in the fight and he went on to win a split decision. Bradley developed in his three previous ShoBox appearances, which helped put him in position for this fight – where he became the first ShoBox fighter to win his title on ShoBox.’’

Danny O’Connor (14-0) vs. Gabriel Bracero (14-0) – Bracero UD 8 O’Connor;

The Hall Recall: “Three talented and touted prospects walked into the ring undefeated and walked out with a loss. And all on the same night… now that’s what I’m talking about!”

Santiago hoping third time’s the charm for Shumenov title fight
Posted on | June 30, 2011 | No Comments
‘Fire& Fury’ on Solo Boxeo Tecate show July 29 live at South Point Hotel Casino, Las Vegas
LAS VEGAS (June 30, 2011) – Two-time world title challenger Danny “The Bronx Bomber” Santiagois hoping the third time’s the charm for him when he challenges World Boxing Association/International Boxing Association Light Heavyweight World Champion Beibut Shumenov, headlining the “Fire and Fury” pro boxing card, July 29 on the TeleFutura’s Solo Boxeo Tecate show, airing live from South Point Hotel Casino in Las Vegas.
“Fire& Fury” is being promoted by KZ Event Productions, which is owned and operated by the Shumenov brothers, Beibut and Chingis, in Las Vegas. Shumenov-Santiago is somewhat of a boxing anomaly, featuring a pair of college graduates in a world title fight.
WBA #15 ranked Santiago (31-4-1, 19 KOs), fighting out of Ocala, Florida, is a two-time world title challenger. His signature victory was a fourth-round technical knockout of 30-1 Elvir Muriqi. Santiago was also featured on the third season of The Contender reality television series.
The Bronx native who lives in Ocala (FL) has had two proposed fights fall out, including one against Roy Jones, Jr. “I promised myself and my family that I would continue boxing as long as I still enjoyed it,” the University of South Florida graduate (business & accounting major) explained. “I still do. I opened a business – a gym around boxing (Central Florida Boxing – www.centralfloridaboxing.com) –to have something to fall back on when I retire from boxing. It’s turned out be a great thing. I had those two fights fall through but things like that happen when you’re self-promoted. But I stayed in my gym, working hard, and now I’m blessed to have this opportunity.”
Shumenov (11-1, 7 KOs), the 2004 Kazakhstan Olympian who is now fighting out of Las Vegas, set a light heavyweight record for capturing a world title in the fewest career fights, 10, when (Jan. 10, 2010) he won a 12-round decision againstGabriel Campillo in Las Vegas. Shumenov has successfully defended his WBA/IBA titles twice against No. 1 mandatory challenger Viacheslav Uzelkov (UDEC12) and three-time world champion William Joppy (KO6) last January in Shymkent, Kazakhstan. In his 11 pro fights, Beibut has defeated four world champions (Campillo, Joppy, Byron Mitchell and Montell Griffin) and two world title challengers (Uzelkov and Epifanio Mendoza).
“I don’t know Beibut but he’s obviously a unique individual having already accomplished what he has in 11 pro fights,” Santiago remarked. “But this is a business and I will do what I have to do in the ring against him. Boxing is what we’ve both chosen to do. Fighting is easy; it’s everything else in this business that’s difficult. Dealing with his people, though, I can tell you, they’re as professional as any I’ve ever worked with in boxing. It may be surprising for me to say this but, they’re very honest, first-class people. Everything they’ve said has actually happened.”
Santiago has more professional ring experience than Shumenov by 10 years, 24 fights and 97 rounds. Danny has lost two world light heavyweight title fights, both in 2007, to Zsolt Erdei (WBO) and Antonio Tarver (IBO).
“I don’t really have very much of an experience advantage over him,” Danny added.”Don’t look past his Olympics experience, on the grandest stage, fighting the best in the world. I may have more pro fights than him but he’s fought the same class of fighters, pro and Olympians, as I have.
“I’m not trying to butter him up but Shumenov is very exciting, smart, and strong. And just look at him – he’s a ‘brick-house!’ I need to be in the best shape of my life for this fight to fulfill the dream I had as a kid that I now have as a grown adult (win a world title).”
“Fire& Fury” is being presented by KZ Event Productions in association with Golden Boy Promotions, Don Chargin Promotions, Guilty Boxing, Solo Boxeo Tecate and South Point Hotel Casino.
Tickets, starting at $25.00, are available to purchase at South Point’s box office, on line at http://www.southpointeventscenter.com/events.php, or by calling 1.702.797.8055.
Doors open at 5:30 PM/PT, first bout at 6:00 PM/PT, first TV bout at 8:30 PM/PT
