Toney, Shamrock First Face-to-Face Ends in Near Brawl

Posted on | June 29, 2011 | No Comments

From the files of “what did you think was going to happen with these two in the same room?” comes news that Saturday’s meet and greet and photo-opportunity faceoff at the newly opened IFC Gym in Van Nuys, California, between boxing great James Toney and MMA great Ken Shamrock featured the two nearly coming to blows.

Toney and Shamrock have agreed to meet in a modified rules MMA showdown some time this fall. While several cities and venues are still vying to host the fight, both combatants have already signed on the dotted line. Saturday was their first meeting since they agreed to face each other.

As per the norm for both men, the conference began with ugly NSFW barbs back and forth, but then nearly escalated into chaos.

Despite being held at 8pm on a Saturday, the promotional event garnered 100 fans and media. None left disappointed. Clips of the near brawl have gone viral on the web, with a few threatening to over-run their servers before being pulled down.

Shamrock seems to have the recipe for rattling Toney, who had to be restrained several times.

WBA Official Ruling: Trout Remains Champion

Posted on | June 29, 2011 | No Comments

Sanctioning Body Wisely Invalidates Highly Suspicious Positive Drug Test

WBA Super Welterweight World Champion Austin Trout and his support team are relieved and yet admittedly still angry after receiving final word from WBA Executive Vice President Gilberto Mendoza, Jr. that the WBA has ratified Trout as champion and invalidates the result of a positive post-fight drug test taken in Mexico.

In early June, Trout successfully defended his title against David Lopez by unanimous decision only to be informed afterward that the results of a dubious drug test came back positive for marijuana.

According to Team Trout and promoter Greg Cohen, proper procedures and protocol were not followed. The urine samples they took were not sealed and Trout wasn’t asked to sign any paperwork.

For licensed medical professionals doing proper post-fight drug testing, a “Chain of Custody” process is employed including sealing the sample and filling out necessary paperwork.

Smelling a rat, immediately after arriving home, Team Trout had two more urine samples properly tested at a facility approved by The New Mexico Boxing Commission and sent them to the WBA. Both samples came back clean.

“I can’t point any fingers for legal reasons, but I suspect there was a plot to keep Austin from leaving Mexico with his title one way or the other. My fighter Austin Trout does not do performance enhancing or recreational drugs. He is a World Champion who takes great pride in always being in top condition and relishes the role of being a positive role model for today’s youth,” stated Cohen. “I’m happy the WBA was able to see through it quickly and allow Austin to continue becoming the great champion he is without undue interruption. I wonder how many other fighters who haven’t had the representation or resources to get their own tests have fallen victim to these kinds of unsavory acts.”

The WBA’s official invalidation of the drug test means Trout remains champion and is free to pursue a high profile showdown against Australia’s former WBA multi division World Champion Anthony Mundine.

LEGENDARY BACKYARD BRAWLER KIMBO SLICE TO MAKE BOXING PRO DEBUT AUGUST 13

Posted on | June 29, 2011 | No Comments

Kimbo Slice Banner

Forget the kicking and wrestling, Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson will soon be where he should have been all along… busting heads in a boxing ring.

On Saturday, August 13, legendary street brawler Kimbo Slice will make his long-awaited professional boxing debut in the four-round main event of a Gary Shaw Productions and Tony Holden Promotions boxing extravaganza at Buffalo Run Casino in Miami, Oklahoma.

Slice became the Internet’s first street-certified action hero by smashing down a series of opponents in brutal backyard fist fights. The announcement is good news for fight fans, as he will surely administer a much-needed shot of adrenaline into the American heavyweight scene.

“Kimbo was always meant to be in the ring,” said Jared Shaw, Team Kimbo Promotional Advisor. “He’s one of the hardest punchers in the world and on August 13, his journey to becoming America’s heavyweight begins. The first stop will be Oklahoma in what will become the Kimbo Slice Express.”

Longtime friend and manager, Mike Imber, said that Slice has been training for his debut with his longtime boxing coach Randy Khatami and also spent some time in top-rated contender Alfredo Angulo’s camp, working with trainer Clemente Medina.

“He’s completely focused on his boxing career and excited to showcase his talents inside the squared circle,” continued Shaw. “Kimbo Slice is hungry and when that man wants his bread, he’s scary.”

Slice rose to worldwide prominence via the Internet and viral videos of a series of unlicensed street fights, each of which garnered millions of views. As a mixed martial artist, he competed for the EliteXC and UFC organizations and appeared on CBS, PPV and Showtime Network, going 4-2 against some of the world’s best competition.  Slice drew record numbers of viewers to Spike, the Ultimate Fighter and in each of his network and cable bouts.

“Even in his losses, Kimbo brought a level of excitement that few fighters can generate,” said his promoter, Gary Shaw. “He is a genuine personality with unbelievable strength and character and we’re excited about his prospects in boxing. The minute he steps in the ring, he’ll be one of the most recognizable and talked-about fighters in the sport and his fans around the world will once again feel the excitement.”

“Kimbo’s been waiting for this and now it’s time,” added Imber.

Opponents and other matches on the card will be announced shortly. Tickets for the professional boxing debut of Kimbo Slice are priced at $38, $48 and $68 and will be available July 5 through www.buffalorun.com.

GLADIATOR CHALLENGE TO BE “UNLEASHED” AT 1ST –EVER MMA EVENT AT THUNDER VALLEY CASINO

Posted on | June 29, 2011 | No Comments

MMA pioneer Don “The Predator” Frye to make special appearance

Apple Valley, CA (USA): Gladiator Challenge (GC) owner Tedd Williams is proud to announce “Unleashed,” the first-ever mixed martial arts (MMA) event to take place at the world class Thunder Valley Casino Resort, which is scheduled for Saturday, August 27th. This is a match made in heaven, as the hottest casino in all of California has partnered with the pioneers of the sport of MMA. This electrifying night of fight action will feature some of the top GC fighters, including several title-holders. In addition, as a special treat, MMA pioneer Don “The Predator” Frye is scheduled to make a special appearance. Fight fans will not want to miss this history-making night!

“We are extremely pleased and excited to bring the GC brand of MMA action to a locale like Thunder Valley Casino,” exclaimed Williams. “It’s a beautiful place, and I can’t wait to see the entertaining show the fighters put on there.”

“Unleashed” will showcase some of the best competitors Gladiator Challenge has to offer. Four top-shelf main events headline the card, including:

–         A title match between the GC Super Heavyweight Champion, Rick Vardell, and MMA legend Dan “The Beast” Severn

–         GC Middleweight Champion James “The Educator” Fanshier defending his strap against Chris Sheridan

–         A GC Heavyweight Championship fight between title-holder Rob “Caveman” Jackson and fan favorite Deutsch Pu’u

–         Recently-crowned GC Native American Light Heavyweight Champion Owen Rubio will put the title on the line in a rematch with former belt-holder Mike “Lil’ Bear” Johnson
The action will all take place at the Thunder Valley Casino, located at 1200 Athens Avenue in Lincoln, California. For more information on the Thunder Valley Casino, please visit http://www.thundervalleyresort.com/. Doors for “Unleashed” will open at 5:30 PM, with the first fight hitting at 7 PM. Tickets for this exciting event will be available through the Virtual Box Office at http://gc.vbotickets.com/. More information will be announced soon.

Rick Vardell (4-1) is one of the most popular fighters in Gladiator Challenge today. The GC Super Heavyweight Champion, Vardell has garnered a reputation for putting on brutal displays of power. A former world champion arm-wrestler, the 48 year-old last competed in the GC cage at “Royal Flush” in November of last year, where he avenged the only loss of his career with a 2nd-round TKO stoppage of Dan Quinn. The 6’4”, 265-pounder is a behemoth of a man that must be seen in action to be truly appreciated.

Dan “The Beast” Severn (99-18-7) is one of pioneers of MMA, and holder of over 100 recognized titles and championships. Simply put, Severn’s legacy in the sport has been cemented. He has locked horns with some of the best fighters in the world; the list is a virtual “who’s who” of the cage and the squared circle. Ken Shamrock, Mark Coleman, Royce Gracie, Oleg Taktarov, Tank Abbott, Jeremy Horn, Kimo, Pat Militech, Josh Barnett, Pedro Rizzo, and even Forrest Griffin have all tasted the fury of “The Beast.” But Severn is not done yet. Having conquered the worlds of amateur wrestling, pro wrestling, and mixed martial arts, The Beast is hungry for more. And now he wants the GC Super Heavyweight belt.

James “The Educator” Fanshier (18-11) recently returned from a nine-month hiatus from fighting to put his GC middleweight crown on the line against tough veteran Richard Blake. Blake put up a solid fight, but Fanshier was able to secure the victory with a 2nd-round armbar submission. One of the most experienced GC competitors ever, Fanshier holds a 14-5 record with the promotion. He has faced notable fighters such as Chris Leben, James Lee, Thomas “Wildman” Denny, Shannon Ritch, Joey Villasenor, Jeremiah Metcalf, Ronald Jhun, and Mike “The Joker” Guymon.

Rob “Caveman” Jackson (4-1) recently secured the Gladiator Challenge Heavyweight Championship with a victory over grizzled veteran Ruben “Warpath” Villareal. The hotly-contested battle at the aptly-named “Warpath” event ended up in a split-decision in favor of the underdog “Caveman.” Jackson has won four of his five fights, all of them taking place in GC. Now, after shocking the California fight scene and taking the GC heavyweight belt, he’ll look to defend the strap for the first time.

Deutsch Pu’u (2-0), revered back in his home territory of American Samoa, Pu’u served in the U.S. Army in Afghanistan. While serving, he became a champion boxer, and was chosen to participate in the Army World Class Athletic Program. As a result, he was selected for the Olympic Games trials in 2003. This war hero did not only battle in the ring. He led men into battle many times, and was discharged honorably from the army after reaching the rank of Sergeant Major. Now a full-fledged MMA fighter, you’d be hard-pressed to find a competitor with more heart.
