WAYNE REED VOWS TO END ROBIN REID’S CAREER

Sheffield fighter aiming to put Prizefighter pain behind him on Saturday

Wayne Reed faces former WBC World Champion Robin Reid at the Hillsborough Leisure Centre on Saturday – and says he’ll end the 40 year-olds career at the sell-out show live on Sky Sports.

Both men took part in the 17^th edition of Prizefighter in Liverpool, and while Reid crashing out to Tobias Webb by unanimous decision was a surprise, it was the second quarter-final when Reed took on local favourite Joe Ainscough that caused the controversy. The three-round contest was tight until the final stages when Reed floored the Ainscough before the final bell, seemingly enough to claim a place in the semi-finals.

But it was not to be, Ainscough took the split-decision and Reed’s corner was livid. Reed has fought since – a points win over fellow Sheffield man Dean Walker in April – and says that it is time to move on from that contentious night in Liverpool.

“After Prizefighter I was in the gym the next morning and I was so angry that I absolutely battered the bags,” said Reed. “But a week or so later time is a healer so I was over it really, you just have to get on with it, there’s nothing I could do about it.

“I lost the first round, won the second round and knocked him down in the final round – so even if I was losing the final round I still won the round, as it was I battered him and knocked him down so it had to be a 10-8 round. If you were being very objective – and I know it’s all about opinions – you could’ve said the second round was a draw, but even then I won the fight by a point. That’s my opinion anyway, but it’s gone now and all I can do is look forward, starting tonight.”

Reed may have got over the loss to Ainscough – only his second as a pro – but when Walker and he were called into the Rotherham bout at 24 hours notice, it was all people wanted to ask him about, much to his chagrin.

“When I fought Dean everyone kept mentioning Ainscough, the split decision or Prizefighter and I got really annoyed,” said Reed. “I was telling them that I was trying to get ready for another fight, shut up. I was warming up and trying to get focussed and people were coming into the changing room asking me about Prizefighter – I had to tell them to get out in the end. It’s understandable as it was a shocker so people are going to be able to talk about it.

“I said in my interview on Sky before Prizefighter that any publicity is good publicity and to be fair it has got people interested in me – but not for the right reasons. Having said that, everyone is coming to watch me fight and I’ve sold a ton of tickets, well over 150 and I could have sold more too. I can’t wait to get in there.”

And when he does get in there, he’ll face the former WBC World Champion Robin Reid, who returned to the ring for Prizefighter after almost four years away from boxing.

Reid’s decision to return to the ring for Prizefighter was befitting of a man who always fought in the public eye. He won his WBC belt in 1996 and defended it three times before losing it in 1997 and then had memorable title challenges against the likes of Sven Ottke, Silvio Blanco and of course, Joe Calzaghe.

Reid had a warm-up bout before Prizefighter, but his last major fight came in 2007 against Carl Froch in Nottingham when he lost to The Cobra in a British title challenge. Tonight will be The Grim Reaper’s 49^th professional fight – and Reed is intending to make it his last.

“He’s old enough to be my Dad!” said Reed. “I’m going to end his career, his time has gone. Prizefighter isn’t really made for him; he’s a twelve round fighter who won’t come alive until after three rounds. I don’t watch DVDs of my opponents but obviously I’ve seen footage of his old fights. I’ve got nothing but respect for what he’s achieved but the writing is on the wall for him.

“I’ve been on the weight for weeks so I’m in great shape and after this I’m looking for a contract and an English title shot.”

JAMES “WHITEY” BULGER, AKA THE GUY WHO SCARED DANA WHITE OUT OF SOUTH BOSTON, CAPTURED IN CALIFORNIA

JAMES “Whitey” BULGER, at left, saw his 16-year-stint on the run from the law end Wednesday in Santa Monica California. The nickname “Whitey” was one that Bulger was said to detest, but it stuck to the Irish Mobster-turned-FBI-Informant and was just one aspect that helped make the career criminal into a mythical figure.

Zuffa President Dana White was so scared of Bulger he skipped town when one of the mobster’s thugs approached White to demand tribute when White ran a boxing gym in South Boston.  Instead of giving up $2,500 to Whitey, the UFC President went back to Las Vegas where he’d spent his high school years. He would later ironically get together with the offspring of another connected guy (Frank Fertitta, Jr.) to buy out the UFC for a cool $2 million. The experience with Bulger obviously didn’t deter White from glorifying Boston’s Mob scene years later when he helped bankroll a pilot using some of Whitey’s old thugs as consultants.

On the other side of the coin, my own father investigated Bulger when he was a detective with the Quincy, Massachusetts Police. The first newscast I saw on the California bust actually featured one of Dad’s surveillance photos of Bulger. My father actually has nearly an entire chapter in the book Black Mass devoted to his work to bust Bulger in the midst of his crime spree back in the 1980s.

Bulger’s capture is long past due, and it will hopefully give some solace to the families of the 19 people he is suspected of murdering over his years reigning over rackets in South Boston. Though his character received star treatment with Jack Nicholson’s portrayal of a Bulger-esque figure in “The Departed,” the real Whitey was truly the scum of the Earth. There have been dozens of books describing his double-agent lifestyle and larger than life persona, but none of them became a Hollywood blockbuster that did justice to his true criminal nature.

The FBI Top-Echelon Informant Program dreamed up by Agent John Connolly that turned Whitey into a turncoat created a true monster and defied the traditional approach to investigation of using the little fish to get the big fish. Bulger spent more time turning Connolly and his fellow agents into willing co-conspirators by bribing them and giving them Christmas bonuses than he did bringing down other major criminals in his circle. Bulger used the informant program to take out his competition and get carte blanche on his own crimes up to and including murder. The length of time he spent on the lam also led many to believe the FBI didn’t really want to find him, as if their indifference in capturing him let him make his own rules for his own unofficial witness protection program.

It was Bulger’s flamboyant gal pal who did him in, though. The FBI’s knowledge of previous sightings of Catherine Greig, the woman Whitey took with him on his cross-country run from the law, led the bureau to post a new video of Greig during daytime TV timeslots:

Soon after the FBI announced the plan to publish the above video, the national news media embraced he story. The true crime saga was always given much more coverage in the Boston area over the years. It was a surprise to me when I saw Howie Carr on Bill O’Reilly’s Fox News show Tuesday night. Carr, a Boston Herald reporter notorious for his decades-long reporting on Bulger, has written some books of his own on the former boss of the Winter Hill Gang. Previously to his appearance on “The Factor,” Carr’s biggest moment in the spotlight was probably his cameo as a radio talk show host in the John Travolta film “A Civil Action.” Though Carr speculated that Bulger was stuck overseas, the media buzz and the circulation of the Greig video ultimately led to the most recent actionable tip that gave the FBI an opportunity to capture the pair in Santa Monica, California.

The Golden State was an area where the two had actually been seen before, more than a decade ago in 2000. Back in January of 2000 Greig was identified in Fountain View, California after her hairdresser reported seeing her in a salon where Bulger was waiting for her outside in his car. The trail went cold after that, and years later Bulger evaded capture across the pond in London even though investigators would uncover a bank account held in his real name. Bulger used multiple aliases during his time as a fugitive, usually adopting the first name Tom.

Bulger’s capture was also bolstered by the Seal Team 6 killing of Osama Bin Laden, which bumped Bulger up to the country’s most wanted fugitive. Now that he’s been captured so close to Hollywood and will be indicted in an LA courthouse Thursday, perhaps the script writers will start furiously writing the happy ending to a true fact-is-stranger-than-fiction tale that’s been a tragedy for far too long.

After graduating from Western Washington University with a degree in Math, Ryan Couture began a less than glamorous career as an Operations Manager for the now defunct Washington Mutual Bank.  But, in 2006, the son of UFC Hall-of-Famer Randy Couture, decided to practice Jiu Jitsu to stay in shape. That led to the more aggressive workout of Muay Thai.  Before long, it was pretty clear to all the coaches at Xtreme Couture that the then 24-year-old should be training in earnest.

By 2009, Couture was competing in amateur bouts to make his bones before deciding to go pro.  He ended his amateur status with an impressive 5-1-1 record.  The Tuff-N-Uff promotion hosted his final amateur bout against Sean Bollinger.  Bollinger, the head trainer at Eddie Bravo’s 10th Planet at Riverside gym, is a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu; with the distinction of being Bravo’s second ever student awarded a black belt. The bout between Couture and Bollinger ended in a draw but was decidedly a balls-to-the-wall war of attrition that led Couture to the conclusion he was ready for the professional cards.

He made his pro debut with the Strikeforce organization in August of 2010, punctuating his coming out party with a triangle choke victory over Lucas Stark.  Stark was a Rage in the Cage veteran with a 2 and 4 record against other newcomers before making his disappointing Strikeforce debut, bringing his loss count to 5.

In February, 2011 Couture faced Lee “Hoss” Higgins in another Strikeforce event.  Like Couture, Higgins had also just gone pro and was on a 2-0 win streak in small promotions before meeting the former champion’s son.  Higgins, who won both his previous professional fights with a rear naked choke, found himself the victim of his own signature submission. With only 19 seconds left in the third round, Couture sunk the hold and stole the win.

On Friday, June 24, 2011, Ryan Couture, now 29, will meet with Matt Ricehouse, a fairly huge lightweight, in Strikeforce: Challengers 16 co-headliner event.  Ricehouse is a well-rounded competitor sporting a  4-0-0 record, with two of his wins coming on a Strikeforce undercard: a rear naked choke win over Gregory Wilson at Strikeforce: Heavy Artillery on May 15, 2010 and a decision win over Tom Aaron in Strikeforce: Henderson vs. Babalu on December 4, 2010.

Technically, Couture is the underdog in this bout in that Ricehouse can boast two knock-outs, a decision, and a submission win, making him a very formidable opponent.   Couture, on the other hand, has the advantage of world class trainers and a special set of genetics that have the potential for setting him apart from his competition.

If not for the Couture name, it is doubtful this fight would ever have otherwise held the honor of a co-main event, but neither fighter is complaining.  With no other big names on the card, save for the main event of Caros Fodor vs. James Terry, all eyes will be on the newcomers, mostly to see if Randy Couture’s son can bring the goods.  All the pressure is on him, and Ricehouse promises to be his most difficult competition so far.  Nevertheless, if Ryan continues on the same path he started on in the sport, he’ll make a name for himself that has nothing to do with who his father is.

NABA Lightweight Champion Logan Cotton McGuinness at home headlining ‘Friday Night At The Fights’

TORONTO (June 22, 2011) – North American Boxing Association(“NABA”)  Lightweight Champion Logan Cotton McGuinness makes his second title defense this weekend at home in the 10-round main event against veteran Daniel “Canerito” Ruiz on the “Friday Night At The Fights” card at Hershey Centre in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada.

 

The “Friday Night At the Fights” show is presented by United Boxing Promotions, in association with McGuiness’ promoter, Hennessy Sports, and Groupe Yvon Michel.

 

World Boxing Association (“WBA”) No. 11 rated McGuinness (14-0-1, 7 KOs) captured his NABA belt and successfully defended it at the same venue, which isn’t too far from his Orangeville home, respectively, last September when Buzz Grant was unable to answer the bell for the third round, and this past February via a fourth round knockout of veteran Hector Julio Avila (47-5).

 

“Orangeville is a small town of around 30,000 people,” Irishman McGuinness said. “Everybody there is very supportive of their own and, where the fight is only a 40-minute drive, I expect half the town to be at my fight. Last September, I fought another local fighter (Buzz Grant) and half of Orangeville had to be there. There’s some added pressure fighting at home but, to see my family and friends there supporting me when I walk out to the ring, well, I can’t describe what that really feels like.”

 

The only blemish on Cotton’s otherwise perfect pro record is a six-round draw 13 months ago with dangerous Walter Estrada, who holds victories against former world champion Nate Campbell and Verquan Kimbrough.

 

“Everything is a stepping stone boxing,” the handsome 23-year-old Logan noted. “Winning the NABA title was my first big goal and defending it is another little step leading up to what I really want – a world title! I’m still very young and there’s no rush. Maybe, I’ll get a world title shot in another year or two. I’m not sure if I’ll drop down to 130 (super featherweight) or just grow into 135 (lightweight). I can fight in either division.

 

“I’m a boxer-puncher who didn’t start boxing until I was 14. I used to just apply pressure and throw combinations, but I’ve developed a lot more power, and I pick my spots better. It’s not just the power, it’s where your punches land, and I’ve been working on that a lot going into this fight.”

 

Ruiz (22-3-1, 16 KOs) will be fighting outside of his native Mexico for the first time. The former Mexican Pacific Coast Featherweight Champion is unbeaten in his last five fights with four wins and a draw.

 

“There’s not a lot of footage on him,” McGuinness concluded. “He has 22 wins with 16 knockouts, so the plan is to come out in the first round respecting him. I’ve been trained for everything and will figure him out. I’ll start slow, use my jab, and then go to the body. By the mid-to-late rounds I’ll chop him down.”
