NCAA Wrestling Standout Anthony Robles

2011 NCAA Champion and three-time NCAA All-American Anthony Robles will be joining USA Olympian Ken Chertow’s Gold Medal Training Camp staff this summer. The nation’s largest camp system will conduct camp in over 20 different locations across the country.

Coach Chertow’s annual Gold Medal Training Camp summer tour is already underway. Chertow is a three-time NCAA All-American and three-time NCAA Academic All-American at Penn State University. Ken Chertow takes a very active stance when it comes to his camps, whether it is planning out the flow of practice or personally demonstrating a series of moves to campers. He has been involved in the coaching and teaching of wrestling for over 20 years, and in that time he has coached the Penn State and Ohio State wrestling teams.

“I have personally designed the Gold Medal Camp System so that you will learn and retain as much as possible,” said Chertow. “Through a carefully planned sequence of instruction, unique drills, and review sessions, our wrestlers will learn the techniques necessary to become a champion.”

Recently added to staff is 2011 NCAA Champion and three-time NCAA All-American Anthony Robles.  Anthony, a recent Arizona State graduate, has overcome a life of adversity to show that “Hard Work Makes Dreams Come True.” Anthony will be joining other Olympians, NCAA and State Champions, and coaches from all over the country that are renowned for their knowledge of the sport.

Allen & Bernardo continue winning ways for Boxing 360

NEW YORK (June 1, 2011) – A pair of unbeaten Boxing 360 fighters, Lennox “2 Sharpe” Allen and Eudy “AK47”Bernardo, continued their winning ways this past weekend, respectively, by capturing one title and retaining another.

 

Undefeated,  New York State super middleweight Allen (15-0-1, 9 KOs) returned home to Georgetown, Guyana for an Independence Day showdown last Saturday night, in which he thoroughly dominated Kwesi Jones (7-2, 4 KOs) en route to a 12-round unanimous decision (120-108, 119-109, 118-110) for the vacant WBC Caribbean Boxing Federation title.

 

Bernardo (9-0, 6 KOs) stopped John Nolasco (18-6-4, 8 KOs) in the eighth round of their Dominican Lightweight Championship bout in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, marking Eudy’s second successful title defense since winning that belt last July.

Liakhovich invites Helenius Into ‘The White Wolf’ Den

SCOTTSDALE, Arizona (June 1, 2011) – The delayed return of former world heavyweight champion and 1996 Bellarusian Olympian, Sergei “The White Wolf” Liakhovich is on July 16 as the Bellarusian Olympian takes on highly-touted, undefeated Robert “The Nordiac Nightmare” Helenius in Munich, Germany.

 

The 35-year-old Liakhovich (25-3, 16 KOs), rated No. 13 by the World Boxing Council, was supposed to be back in action April 9 in Newark after nearly a year-long absence, but an injury suffered in the final week of training camp forced him to withdraw. Instead of taking an easy tune-up, or sign a more lucrative deal offered by K2 Promotions, Liakhovich chose to make his Main Events debut against Helenius (15-0, 10 KOs), who is world rated among the top four governing bodies (WBO #2, IBF #3, WBA #8 and IBF (IBF #15), as well as No. 8 by The Ring. Helenius is a native of Norway but he lives and fights out of Germany.

 

“This is what being a true champion really is about,” Liakhovich explained. “I believe you have to take risks to get greater results. Boxing is the best of all sports but its core is in earning respect as a fighter. I think you can accomplish that by taking risks. I had to do that in the past when I fought Dominick Quinn, who was America’s top heavyweight hope at that time, and nobody gave me a chance when I went against Lamon Brewster. Both times taking risks paid off for me and this is not any different. My opponent is a good fighter. He proved that he deserves to be in the top 10 of the world by defeating Brewster and (Samuel) Peter. But he’s never faced anybody with my skills.

 

“I was very disappointed I had to cancel my (April) fight, but I believe what happens is always for a reason, and sometimes things turn out the way you did not expect. I am glad I have this opportunity and I will take full advantage of it. I’m working again with trainer Kenny Weldon, who was in my corner when I won the WBO title, and doing things that I had stopped. We’ve also been working on a few new things to prepare for this fight. I think it’s going to be a very good fight with two guys putting everything on the line.”

 

Back in 2006, Liahkovich was on top of the boxing world having won a unanimous decision (117-110, 115-113, 115-112) against Brewster for the WBO crown, sporting a 23-1(13 KOs) pro record that included notable wins against world title contender Guinn and previously undefeated Friday Ahunanya. In his first world title defense, however, Liakhovich lost his belt to Shannon Briggs by way of a 12^th round technical knockout with only one second remaining in the fight, in which Sergei led on all three judges’ cards by scores of 106-103, 106-103 and 105-104.

 

After his fight against Briggs, Sergei was put on his old promoter’s shelf and he has fought only three times since 2006, the last a ninth-round stoppage of Evans Quinn a year ago in Germany.

 

“I have to give a lot of credit to Sergei,” Main Events CEO Kathy Duva commented. “From the moment he was offered the match with Helenius, he absolutely demanded that we make the fight. There are very few elite professional boxers who are willing to put everything on the line without a moment’s hesitation, as Sergei did, and accept such a challenge. I believe that his experience and courage will carry the day on July 16^th against such a strong opponent. Sergei is one of the most fan friendly fighters in boxing and we all look forward to a great match in Munich. We also look forward to bringing home the win!”

 

Liakhovich’s Boston-based attorney and veteran boxing lawyer, Anthony Cardinale, got Sergei out of his last contract and negotiated his new deal with Main Events and the Helenius fight. “Sergei chose to take a fight that he could have easily avoided and made more money in a three-fight deal which was offered by K2 (two undercard bouts on the Wladimir Klitschko-David Haye and Vitali Klitschko-Tomasz Adamek cards followed by a guaranteed world title shot),” Atty. Cardinale noted. “His reasoning was a win against Helenius will make a world title fight considerably more valuable to him and his family than the deal offered by K2.

 

“If I were Helenius, I would be concerned because Sergei is getting into the ring a rested, top-conditioned, supremely motivated, championship caliber heavyweight with much more experience. This is not going to be a walk through like Helenius has had against out-of-shape, disinterested former champions just showing up for paydays. He is about to enter a hungry wolf’s den and he won’t come out undefeated.”

Interview – Yassine El Maachi Talks Prizefighter

On Tuesday 7th June the season finale of the highly successful Matchroom Sports promoted Prizefighter series takes place at York Hall in Bethnal Green.

Matchroom Sports have really pulled all the stops out for the season finale with Prizefighter – Welterweight II. The lineup features no less than two former World Champions, Junior Witter and Colin Lynes, a former British Champion, Kevin McIntyre, the current International Masters Champion Yassine El Maachi, a former International and European title challenger, Peter McDonagh, an International Masters challenger, Nathan Graham and two undefeated young prospects, Bobby Gladman and John Wayne Hibbert.

Over the past week or so I have been fortunate to have interviewed Colin Lynes, John Wayne Hibbert and Bobby Gladman, as well as the legendary coach Jimmy Tibbs, who trains Colin Lynes.

Today I managed to catch up with one of the most exciting young fighters taking part in Prizefighter – Welterweights II, Yassine El Maachi.

I’ve seen Yassine fight twice now, and have to admit to being a huge fan. He’s highly entertaining switch hitter that oozes supreme style and panache.

I honestly believe that the TV exposure from Prizefighter could sky rocket Yassine’s career. He’s someone that will excite the fans, in the same way as Prince Naseem did at the turn of the new millennium.

OK, enough of my hyping Yassine, he really doesn’t need me for that, he is more than capable of doing that himself. So without further ado here is a little Q&A with Yassine El Maachi

Rio – You’ve often stated that you have wanted to take part in Prizefighter – Why have you tried so hard to take part in the series?

Yassine – I was waiting to get into Prizefighter for a couple of years now and now they have given me the chance to be in Prizefighter Welter.

I want to be on it to show the people I can do and to prove myself to see how capable to go against the big names taking part.

Rio – What do you think of the Prizefighter series?

Yassine – It has the best fighters in the country, being in there is great. It’s full of former champions. To fight them for thirty two thousand pounds.

For me Prizefighter is geared for people to see eight fighters fight on one night. The winner has to fight three fights, that’s the best thing for me.

A title shot, that’s what I want to be honest with you. That’s what I’m doing it for, I’m in it just for that, to see if I can get a title after that. To beat these guys in Prizefighter is what I want.

For me to just beat these guys to get to a title I’d fight them all at the same time, I would fight seven fighters in one go, I don’t want to fight three of them I want to fight them all in one go.

Rio – OK, interesting idea. Now onto the fighters you may face on the night – give me your thoughts on Junior Witter.

Yassine – Junior is a lovely guy, he can box, he can move. He’s one of the great boxers in the World. He used to be a former WBC, I think, or WBA (ed. WBC) Champion of the World. In 2008 or 2009 he lost it and he want to get it back.

I feel really sorry for him if him and me are going to fight together. I will feel really sorry for him if we meet in the final because he’s only going to make a little bit of money, £16,000, because he’s going to lose to me, because I’m too good.

Rio – If you don’t get Junior you could meet another former World Champion, Colin Lynes, what’s your thoughts on him?

Yassine – Colin Lynes, he got beaten up by Junior Witter. Simple as that, no more to say.

Rio – Next up is British Champ Kevin McIntyre, give us your thoughts on Kevin.

Yassine – To be honest I don’t know who is Kevin McIntyre, but probably he’s going to be the same as other boxers, hands up and comes and box. I love to fight people like that.

Rio – OK, the former WBF Intercontinental and European title challenger Peter McDonagh’s next, what’s your thoughts on him?

Yassine – I don’t know him as well, but he will be the same to be honest with you. Hands up, come forward. I’ll pick him off with punches and tell him goodbye.

Rio – Bobby Gladman’s next on my list. What do you know of Bobby?

Yassine – Bobby Gladman is undefeated, he’s got one draw. He’s a good prospect coming up. It’s too early for him to be in Prizefighter.

Rio – I’m sure you know John Wayne Hibbert as you’ve fought on the same show before, so what’s your thoughts on him?

Yassine – John Wayne Hibbert is a nice guy, he’s undefeated but he’s not going to win if he comes up against me.

Rio – Finally an old gym mate of yours is next – Nathan Graham, give me your thoughts on him?

Yassine – Nathan Graham he’s a nice, good fella. We used to train at the same gym. I wish not to get a draw with him in the first fight, or in the second. If it going to go then go in the final. But if he does I can’t do much I’ll just have to beat him.

Rio – Thank you for taking the time to talk with me, finally is there any thing else you would like to say?

Yassine – It’s going to be hard for any of the fighters, I feel sorry for the undefeated fighters especially. I wish them all luck but if they fight me they will lose.

I mean the fight with Jimmy Colas, number four in Europe, he was looking to fight against Ryan Rhodes. He was going to fight against the best, he’s former WBC or WBO champion, European Champion. He’s the guy that had twenty eight wins and only three or four losses, and I beat him so easily.

I was picking him off so easy. He was coming to fight. That’s why I say to you I’m a fighter, I’m a boxer. If they don’t want to come and fight I’ll box them, that’s me.

That’s what happened with Jimmy Colas, he came to fight but he found a different type of boxer. I was just playing with him. Everyone see what I did to him in the eight, nine and ten round, I was just playing with him.

I was so much winning the fight, winning the first round to the six round and he just start running away. In the round eight , nine and ten I thought I could easily knock him out, I tried but couldn’t because he was tough, he was strong, but I beat him up badly.

That’s what I will do at Prizefighter, but three times. I’ll beat three fighters.

I wish every fighter good luck, but I will win the Prizefighter.

UNBEATEN IRISH BOXER OUT TO PROVE THERE’S TWO ANDY MURRAYS

Cavan ace faces Gavin Rees for the vacant European Lightweight title on Saturday

It could be a huge European weekend for the Andy Murrays –with the high-profile Tennis star gunning for Grand Slam glory in the French Open, and the quiet unbeaten Irish boxer taking on Gavin Rees for the vacant European Lightweight title in Cardiff this Saturday, live on Sky Sports 1 from 10.30pm.

The 28 year-old from Cavan isn’t bothered about sharing a name with the grumpy Scot though, and with the Tennis version a big boxing fan, there’s a chance that the World number four could be ringside at a show one day.

“It’s a bit of a laugh and it doesn’t cause me too much bother!” said Murray – who is aiming to extend his winning pro record to 25 fights. “He loves his boxing so maybe one day he’ll come and see me fight – or even get in the ring with me if he fancies it – a bit of Murray on Murray sparring!”

That sort of photo opportunity is the kind of thing the Sky Sports News cameras and newspapers crave, but Murray is not one for the limelight. He comes into the Rees fight on the back of his first full pro training camp with trainer John Breen and the remote location of their base in the hills of Connemara in County Galway says a lot about Murray – a secluded peninsula away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

“It was my first proper training camp as a pro so being away from home for so long has been tough,” said Murray. “But when I was an amateur I did it so I knew what to expect though and being in the middle of nowhere has helped – there were no distractions and it’s a really peaceful place so I’ve been fully focused on my training with everything I need around me.

“Training’s been great – it’s been really tough but I’ve reaped the benefit and I’m in great shape, so I can’t wait to get in there.”

Murray turned pro in March 2005 after a decorated amateur career that saw him bag several medals and the 2003 Young Boxer of the Year award in Ireland. He landed the Irish Light-Welterweight and Lightweight titles in his first 13 fights before a unanimous points decision against Daniel Rasilla earned him the EU Lightweight title in March 2009.

His last outing came against Graeme Higginson at the M.E.N Arena in Manchester on the undercard of stable mate Paul McCloskey’s World title fight with Amir Khan in April. It was Murray’s first fight in five months and the benefit of his points decision against the rugged Scot in front of a sell out crowd was two-fold.

“I’d been out of the ring for a while so it was a case of getting back into the swing of things,” said Murray. “It was a dangerous fight too as I was fighting a Hatton fighter on a Hatton show so I didn’t want to give anything away as you never know. I boxed nicely enough in the first few rows and I held on to get the victory which is what I needed to do, as well as get valuable rounds under my belt.

“It was a great learning experience for me to be involved in such a massive night of boxing – so topping the bill tonight against the home fighter in Cardiff is not going to be a problem at all.

Murray holds a significant height advantage over Rees and Irish legend Barry McGuigan believes their fight “is going to be a stunner of a clash – a fight of the year contender”.

“He’s not far wrong,” said Murray. “Our styles are the perfect mixture for a great fight. Gavin’s such a hard-working boxer and a top performer, he fights in spurts so I’ll have to be busy the whole fight and keep him on the end of my jab.”

The victor could end up mixing it in World title circles by the end of the year but Murray has his mind focussed on Rees, citing the fate of another unbeaten fighter whose words came back to haunt him in a recent title clash.

“I’m not going to look beyond this fight,” said Murray. “If you talk about what you are going to do in the fight to your opponent or what big fights you’ve got coming up soon, you can come unstuck, just ask James DeGale.”
