Sports history was made Saturday night when Bernard “The Executioner” Hopkins (52-5-2, 32 KO’s), at 46 years old, defeated 28-year-old former WBC and Ring Magazine Light Heavyweight World Champion Jean Pascal (26-2-1, 16 KO’s), making Hopkins the oldest fighter in boxing history to win a significant world title.  Not only did Hopkins take the belts from Pascal in front of 17,560 fans in his hometown of Montreal (an indoor boxing event record in Canada), but he defeated father time once again and solidified his place as one of the greatest athletes ever to compete over the age of 40.

 

With his unanimous decision victory, Hopkins became boxing’s oldest world champion, breaking George Foreman’s record, which was set 16 and half years ago.  Foreman, who was 45 when he knocked out Michael Moorer for the heavyweight title on November 5, 1994, was 192 days younger than Hopkins when he captured his title.

 

Hopkins displayed his excellent conditioning and ring fortitude throughout the bout and hammered the point home at the beginning of the seventh round, when while waiting for Pascal to leave his corner, Hopkins dropped to the canvas and started doing push-ups (click HERE to see push-up highlights).  According to the scorecards, that round went to Hopkins too.  It was a great night of boxing with a spectacular performance by the ageless wonder Bernard Hopkins.

“[Beating the record] feels great.  I did exactly what I wanted to do, which was break this record.  I knew it was going to be a tough fight, but I wasn’t going to be denied.  You don’t get a chance to do this too often.  You are supposed to win titles when you are younger…in your twenties, not when you’re 46.

“I was on the edge of my seat every round.  It was such an exciting fight.  Bernard was the better athlete, the smarter fighter and was in the better condition. Now that a 46 [year-old] has done it, next a 47[year-old], a 48[year-old], a 49[year-old] and a 50 [year-old] will do it, and if somebody does it at 60, then I’ll have to get back in there.
“Look, Hopkins did push-ups.  What great conditioning, and he did it in Pascal hometown.  Isn’t that something?  He was just so much better.  I’m happy for Hopkins and I’m happy for mature athletes.

Bayamon, Puerto Rico’s undefeated featherweight Luis “Orlandito” del Valle (12-0, 10 KOs) left today for his training base in Newburgh, New York, to prepare for the biggest fight of his career against Vietnamese fighter Dat Nguyen (17-1, 6 KOs).   Del Valle vs. Nguyen will serve as the 10-round main event on Saturday, June 11 – the second night of blockbuster back-to-back boxing events at the Roseland Ballroom in New York City on June 10 and 11, entitled Boricua Invasion I & II.   Boricua Invasion II will be televised by Showtime as part of the series ShoBox: The New Generation. “This is an honor, a blessing, a dream come true. Team Johnson Predicting Easy Night Against Froch

“Training went very well and we’re putting on the finishing touches. The hard work is done.” Orlando Cuellar   Orlando Cuellar, trainer of Glen “Road Warrior” Johnson (51-14-2, 35 KOs) says he’s expecting an easy night when his fighter takes on WBC super middleweight champion Carl “Cobra” Froch.   Johnson and Froch will meet in the Super Six World Boxing Classic Semifinal at the Adrian Phillips Ballroom at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City on Saturday, June 4 and televised live on SHOWTIME Championship Boxing starting at 9 PM ET/PT (delayed on the west coast).   Johnson and Cuellar have been working together since 2003, when Johnson (then a full-time construction worker) surprisingly beat top contender Eric Harding for the USBA Light Heavyweight title. They have gone on to win the IBF title against Clinton Woods, knock out Roy Jones and beat Antonio Tarver, among others.   Cuellar says he knows his fighter, knows what he can do, and doesn’t see him having any problems against Froch.   “For us, Froch will be an easy fight. If Glen did as well as he did against Chad Dawson, we believe he should do very well against Froch. Froch isn’t as fast or mobile as Dawson. Glen has faster hands and feet. He has better body work and better defense. The only advantage Froch has is age and Glen has shown he’s only gotten better with age.”   Johnson, says Cuellar, is a natural super middleweight.   “This is our second training camp at 168 lbs and he’s a lot more used to it. The first time around was the first time in years he made 168 and we were all anxious to see how he would perform. This time around, we have the momentum from the previous fight and we realize how well what we did worked and we’re employing the same techniques. We’ve just made a few adjustments to the style of Froch. My mentality is if you can do it in training; you can do in the fight. Judging by that, we are expecting him to look very good. I’ve always believed Glenn would be at his best at super middleweight. He is going to be amazing on June 4.”   Having been together so long, Cuellar says he and the fighter have their routine down like clockwork. “He’s a low maintenance guy. Glen is an old-school fighter who works hard. He’s a real pro who is easy to work with. We do bag work, sparring, regular gym work and then we work on shots that our opponent may give up as far as holes on his defense. We explore ways we can confuse his defense and hit him with shots he doesn’t see coming.”   With thousands of fans coming all the way from Britain to watch their man Froch, Cuellar says they are in for a big disappointment. “The fight won’t go the distance. Stellar Polish Amateur Marcin Marczak To Pro Debut In London On June 4th

Exciting Finchley based Polish Lightweight Marcin Marczak is set to professionally debut, at the Olivia Goodwin Main Events promoted ‘Search & Destroy’ double title headed event at York Hall in Bethnal Green, on Saturday, 4th June 2011, against Earl’s Court battler Bheki ‘Becks-Tiger’ Moyo.

A long time amateur boxer in his home country, Marcin moved to London five years ago to work as a personal trainer, as well as progress his amateur career. A fortunate move to City Boxer, a mainly White Collar Boxing club in Southwark, see Marcin’s boxing aspirations move forward apace, which in turn lead to him making the decision to move to the professional ranks.

Following a testing sparring session, at the TKO Boxing Gym in Canning Town, Marcin spoke briefly on his upcoming debut,  “I’ve waited quite a long time for the fight, I’m not young, I’m twenty nine. It’s everything I’ve been working for and looking forward to my debut.

I started boxing as a junior in Poland. There are many Boxing clubs in the town I used to box, there’s good condition for boxing where I lived.

Five years ago I came to England and started Boxing for English clubs. Then I start working for a White Collar Boxing club, City Boxer club. Then they offered me a boxing match and they said about professional boxing so I said yes, why not.

Then I met Garry (Janes), he’s my trainer and then we start working harder and harder and then I said yes why not and that’s how it happen.

It’s up to me, it’s in my hands so I now boxing in June at York Hall. What can I do, I’m ready for that.”

Marcin’s coach Garry Janes then added, “He was due to fight in March, we started training really properly around Christmas. Had a really nice build up to the fight and was ready to go  and unfortunately the fight didn’t happen, so we ticked over keeping him fit until we started building him up fro the June fight, so he’s super, super fit and ready to go.

Because he missed out on that fight we’re really keen for this fight.”

Marcin Marczak versus Bheki Moyo will feature on the undercard of Olivia Goodwin’s Main Events promoted ‘Search & Destroy’, double title headlined event will take place at the York Hall, Bethnal Green, London on Saturday 4th June 2011.

Co-headlining the show are International Masters Lightweight Champion Ryan ‘Mr Attitude’ Barrett, who will be defending his crown for the first time against former Kenyan Super Featherweight Champion Geoffrey ‘The Tiger’ Munika, and former Super Middleweight supremo Toks Owoh, who was originally due to face Tony Conquest for the British Masters Cruiserweight title until Tony damaged his hand in training.

The massive 16 bout card also features TKO Boxing Gym’s Beckton based Dutch Cruiserweight sensation Mitchell Balker, who gets a stern test against Welsh hardman Hari Miles.

Further Team TKO fighters on the card include Carshalton Welterweight Danny ‘Cassius’ Connor, who faces former WBF Intercontinental title challenger James Todd, as well as Chelsea based Iraqi Heavyweight Ali Adams, Thamesmead Light Middleweight Nathan Weise, Plumstead’s Sam Standing and Islington Welterweight Brett O’Callaghan, all against yet to be named opponents.

Amongst the established stars taking part on 4th June are Luton’s Michael ‘The Real Chunky’ Devine, who takes on Trowbridge’s ‘Dirty’ Dan Carr in a four round Lightweight contest, the sensational Woolwich based Albanian Super Middleweight Eder Kurti, Brentwood Middleweight Kris Agyei-Dua and Minster Kent’s popular Light Heavyweight Dan ‘Woody’ Woodgate.

Making their professional debuts at the ‘Search & Destroy’ event are Lightweight Billy Lavelle, who is sure to be tested hard by the experienced Sid Razak, former unbeaten unlicensed fighter Mark ‘Pee Wee’ Adams, who will face Louis Byrne.
