Undefeated Female MMA Fighter Cat Zingano on Tonight’s FNU Radio Show

Cat Zingano (6-0) is making a name for herself in one of MMA’s toughest female weight divisions (125 pounds), and she’ll talk about her cage fighting career tonight on the Fight News Unlimited Combat Sports Show. Zingano was recently profiled in an MMA Weekly article that previewed her last match-up with fellow top-10 125-pounder Takayo Hashi. Zingano beat Hashi by a knockout slam in the third round while headlining Fight To Win’s “Outlaws” event in Denver, Colorado last Saturday. She is also a veteran of the “Ring of Fire” fight circuit where she holds a title belt.

DALLAS (May 19, 2011)—On this week’s edition of HDNet’s “Inside MMA” “Sugar” Rashad Evans joins Kenny Rice as guest host. The outspoken former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion is currently embroiled in the hottest feud in MMA with his former teammate and current UFC champ Jon Jones.

The two were set to tango later this year before Jones pulled out of the fight due to an injury that was believed to require surgery. The surgery was subsequently canceled and Evans has not been shy about accusing Jones of using the injury to duck a fight with him.

Tension between the two reportedly came to a head at a nightclub in Las Vegas last week. We’ll share the story straight from the horse’s mouth as Rashad tells us what really happened during their impromptu meeting.

Before Evans gets a chance to settle that score, he’ll step into the octagon with Phil Davis at UFC 133, and “Sugar” gives us the scoop on his plans for “Mr. Wonderful.”

On the panel this week, Jon Fitch, Mark Munoz, and Daniel Cormier talk about the importance of wrestling in MMA and we’ll take a look at the USA vs. Russia wrestling meet that recently took place in Times Square.

Then we get the scoop from the panel on their upcoming fights. Fitch says that there are only two fights that make sense for him, while Munoz and Cormier preview their scheduled fights.

Hermes Franca Released From MFC

MFC statement on Hermes Franca

The Maximum Fighting Championship has terminated the contract of Hermes Franca as a fighter with the organization.

An immediate search is underway to replace Franca who was slated to fight Drew Fickett on Friday, June 10 at MFC 30: Up Close & Personal. Fickett’s new opponent is expected to be announced shortly.

“Mr. Franca’s legal situation is a matter in the hands of law enforcement officials and soon to be going before the courts and because of that there will not be any further comment on those allegations, but I have taken immediate action to indicate that he is no longer going to be part of my organization,” stated MFC Owner/President Mark Pavelich.

“We were informed about his arrest and pending trial, and as of 10:30 a.m. MT today, he has been released. These are serious allegations that he is facing and I do not want the Maximum Fighting Championship associated in any way with these matters.”

On top of legal difficulties that were revealed today, Franca twice fought outside of the MFC while under contract with the organization.

“Mr. Franca breached his contract by fighting outside of the organization only 15 days after his bout at MFC 29, and then he fought again six days after that in Brazil and lost,” said Pavelich.

“I find his these actions to be incredibly disrespectful to my company and Mr. Franca is no longer welcome as part of the Maximum Fighting Championship.”

Less than a month after winning his debut professional fight Plumstead’s Sam Standing is primed and ready for more action at Olivia Goodwin Main Events promoted ‘Search & Destroy’ event at York Hall in Bethnal Green, London on Saturday 4th June 2011.

For his debut former Army boxer Sam got to face the highly experienced battler Kristian Laight. Sam received a real baptism of fire, as Kristian took the fight to him big time. Sam, who was forced to fight on the back foot throughout the bout, kept a cool head and picked off the ever advancing Kristian with stiff jabs and double handed counter attacks. Whilst it was without doubt Kristian putting in the majority of the work, it was Sam that enjoyed the bulk of success with quality punches landed and rightly earned his first win, albeit by a very close 39-38 margin.

Following a sparring session, at the TKO Boxing Gym in Canning Town, Sam took a little time to talk about the win and his upcoming bout, “I think it was a very good learning experience, definitely showed me the pro game the hard way I think, rather than having an easy fight in my first contest, Kristian definitely come to win. Yeah so it wa sa really good test.

After watching the DVD I wasn’t entirely happy with myself, I know I can box better than that. I feel I could have let off more shots, he generally held and used his head a lot.

I have no idea who I’ve got on June 4th. Hopefully another hard test, I’m not in it for easy fights, so yeah hopefully another test.

It’s great, straight out of one fight and in the gym training and getting ready for the next one.

Sam Standing, against a yet to be named opponent, will feature on the undercard of Olivia Goodwin’s Main Events promoted ‘Search & Destroy’, double title headlined event will take place at the York Hall, Bethnal Green, London on Saturday 4th June 2011.

Co-headlining the show are International Masters Lightweight Champion Ryan ‘Mr Attitude’ Barrett, who will be defending his crown for the first time against former Kenyan Super Featherweight Champion Geoffrey ‘The Tiger’ Munika, and former Super Middleweight supremo Toks Owoh, who was originally due to face Tony Conquest for the British Masters Cruiserweight title until Tony damaged his hand in training.

The massive 16 bout card also features Connor’s TKO team mates Beckton based Dutch Cruiserweight sensation Mitchell Balker, who gets a stern test against Welsh hardman Hari Miles, Carshalton Welterweight Danny ‘Cassius’ Connor, who faces former WBF Intercontinental title challenger James Todd, as well as Chelsea based Iraqi Heavyweight Ali Adams, Thamesmead Light Middleweight Nathan Weise and Islington Welterweight Brett O’Callaghan, all against yet to be named opponents.

Real ‘Homecoming’ for Whitley

HOLYOKE, Mass. (May 19, 2011) – Battle-tested boxer Derrick “Double Impact” Whitley (24-25-3, 11 KOs) returns to the ring for the first time in nearly four years to headline a pro boxing show in his hometown of Holyoke, “Homecoming,” June 25 at the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Holyoke.

 

The crafty southpaw takes on former Interim World Boxing Association (“WBA”) light heavyweight champion Richard“The Destroyer” Hall in the eight-round main event at a 190-pound catch-weight on the American Fighting Organization (“AFO”)-promoted “Homecoming” card.

 

Boxing dates back to 1896 in Holyoke; Rocky Marciano made his pro debut there in 1947, and other Hall of Famers such as Willie Pep, Sandy Saddler, Beau Jack, Sixto Escobar and Fritzie Zivic, along with world champions Tony DeMarco, Paddy DeMarco, Lou Ambers and Lou Salica, fought in the western Massachusetts city where volleyball was invented in 1895. “Iron” Mike Tyson won a Golden Gloves title there in 1984

 

However, pro boxing hasn’t been held in Holyoke since 2000 – the only time in the past half-century — and 15-year veteran Whitley has never had an opportunity to fight in his hometown until now. “When I was asked if I wanted to fight on this show I thought that they were kidding,” Whitley explained. “I had the itch, though, from training (heavyweight) Tony Grano in the gym. I was able to move around pretty good in the ring and felt that I still had it. I can slip and roll with the punches. I knew that ‘Chip’ Perez and a few other fighters from Holyoke and (nearby) Springfield were going to fight on the June 25^th card. I got excited and said, yes. Maybe this will be a one-time fight. I’ll see how I feel afterwards and make a decision then.”

 

Whitley and his brothers – twin Darren, Brent and Mark – own Whitley Fitness gym in Holyoke. They also train a number of amateur boxers, which is another reason Derrick is making this comeback. “I’ve always been the type that likes proving people wrong who say I can’t do something,” Whitley remarked. “Hey, I’m 43, but I’m in good shape and this will be a good experience. I’ll be able to show my amateur boxers what I’ve been telling them. There’s only so much you can learn in this game and the rest comes down to heart and desire. That’s what I’ve always had.”

 

The Whitley-Hall match-up features a contrast in styles. Both are lefthanders but Whitley has never been floored, never mind stopped in 52 pro fights and 308 rounds, while Hall has knocked out 27 of his 29 victims.

 

“I guess I can take a good punch,” the unassuming Whitley commented about never being out or even down. “People have always said the Whitleys are tough. I guess it comes from our mixed martial arts program in which defense is a good offense. I don’t stand and trade, I keep moving. Hall is tall with good speed. He’s fought Roy Jones and some other good fighters. I know he’s been in some good fights but I never hand-picked opponents and always fought anybody in there with me. I’m not going to change now and take an easy opponent like a lot of fighters do today. I’m training hard and it could be anybody’s night.”

 

In only his 10^th pro fight, Whitley fought future world champion Manny Siaca, and then Derrick moved on to eventually tangle with world title challengers Kabary Salem (twice), Randy Griffin and Rico Hoye. Hall, who defeated Anthony Bigeni by second-round knockout in their 1999 Interim WBA light heavyweight world title fight, defeated former world champion Byron Mitchell 3 ½ years ago, in addition to testing world champions Jones, Dariusz Michalczewski (twice) and Glen Johnson.

 

Super featherweight and fan favorite Joseph “Chip” Perez (5-1, 2 KOs) returns home to fight in the six-round, co-feature against an opponent to be determined. Pro debuting junior welterweight Jair “Da-Bully” Ramos, of Waterbury (CT), and Joel Alarcon (0-2), of New Bedford (MA), meet in a four-round bout.

 

Also fighting on the undercard in four-round bouts is Holyoke light heavyweight Pedro “Tyson” Gonzales in his pro debut vs. George Perez (0-1-1), Springfield light heavyweight Reinaldo Graceski (1-0) vs. TBA, Springfield welterweights Jose Angel “KO” Ortiz (4-6-1, 1 KO) and Noel Garcia (2-9-1, 1 KO) throw-down, and Springfield cruiserweight Jose Torres and Kovon Graham will also be making their pro debuts. John Wayne Hibbert Interview

With seriously big names, such as former World Champs Junior Witter and Colin Lynes and former British Champion Kevin McIntyre, grabbing all the headlines in the build up to the highly anticipated Matchroom Sports promoted Prizefighter – Welterweights II, which takes place at York Hall on Tuesday 7th June, I decided to buck the trend a bit, well my last interview was with Colin Lynes, and make a concerted effort to catch up with some of the lesser well known names taking part.

As luck would have it earlier this week I was at the TKO Boxing Gym in Canning Town photographing Big John McDermott sparring with Ali Adams. Across the ring I spotted the familiar figure of John Wayne Hibbert chatting with Kevin Mitchell.

For those that don’t know him, yet, John has a crowd pleasing style and brings a large posse of highly vocal supporters with him. He lives up to his “John Wayne” moniker by donning a stetson into the ring.

The first time I see John in action was back in April last year, when he fought Matt Scriven, at the excellent Steve Goodwin promoted ‘Night of Rising Stars’ event. John impressed me with his performance, and his vociferous following who never let up their deafening support for their hero throughout.

That was John’s sixth bout and I have to be honest I was quite disappointed not to have seen any of his earlier fights and had made a mental note marking him down as one to watch.

I next got to see him in action the following December, at the superb Judgement Day event, where again he put on another excellent performance – as my fight report attests

“The assembled crowd at York Hall were on their feet and in full voice the moment they see the stetson wearing John Wayne Hibbert appear and didn’t abate throughout their heroes six round encounter with William Warburton.

Hibbert ensured that by putting on one of his trademark attacking displays. About the only time the decibel levels dropped was after Hibbert received a cut above the left eye in third round. Hibbert seemed unfazed by the cut as he kept on pressuring Warburton to secure a tidy 59-55 points victory.”

These may have been the only times I personally see John in action, but they are far from his only successes.

John was a successful amateur winning National titles at both schoolboy and Senior level, including representing England in international competitions.

John made his debut on Miranda Carter’s Left Jab promotions 2009 Father’s Day show, where he stopped Damien Jeffries in the first round.

Three months later John was back in action, this time his victim was Andrew Patterson, who he stopped in the second round.

Less than a month later John returned to York Hall, where he convincingly out pointed Kevin McCauley.

Next up just two months later was another second round stoppage victory, this time over Bheki Moyo.

It wasn’t until March 2010 that his legion of fans got to see him in action again, against Rick Boulter. As in three of his previous four outings this one also didn’t get to go the distance, as Boulter’s manager, Carl Greaves, pulled him out at the end of the second to save him further punishment, or worse being knocked out.

Which nicely brings us back to the fights I see him in, so without further ado here is John Wayne Hibbert talking about Prizefighter and his possible opponents on June 7th.

Rio – Thank you for talking with me today – first of all please tell me your thoughts on Prizefighter.

John – I think it’s a great idea for prospects and everyone that’s in it. It’s a great idea.

Rio – What do you think your chances are of winning Prizefighter?

John – I wouldn’t be in it it I didn’t think I could win it, I believe I can do well and nick it.

Rio – Now to the other fighters in the tournament – What are your thoughts on Junior Witter?

John – Can’t knock him can you. He’s been a World Champion, I’ve got all respect for him. He’s getting on a bit now, so I’m still young so I don’t see any problems there really.

Rio – OK, We’ll move on to Colin Lynes

John – Damn good fighter, another ex-World Champion. I’m not going to disrespect him. He’s got a brilliant jab. Take away his jab though, I reckon I can get underneath it and take it away and do the job though.

Rio – Next up is Kevin McIntyre

John – Don’t know too much about Kevin McIntyre so I’ll have to watch up on him.

Rio – OK, your thoughts on Yassine El Maachi

John – Dangerous fighter, very elusive. You’ve got to get close to him, take all his grin away. Yeah I reckon I can beat him.

Rio – Next is Peter McDonagh

John – Don’t know too much about him either. Going to have to look up on him, I aint seen too much of him.

Rio – Bobby Gladman’s next on the list.

John – Aint seen too much of him either, I know he’s quite a good upright boxer. I aint too fussed.

John – I don’t know nothing about Nathan Graham. All I’ve seen is his record, I’ll have to watch him.

Rio – How do you think being on Prizefighter will affect your career?

John – When I go and win it I’ll go straight up the rankings, so it’ll be all good for me when I win it.

Obviously if I get a title shot because of it that’ll be brilliant, there’s a lot of good fighters at that weight. But I’m going to take this one step at a time and concentrate on Prizefighter, I’m not thinking about anything else yet. Just concentrating on that Prizefighter.

Rio – Talking about concentrating on Prizefighter, who have you been sparring to prepare for June 7th?

John – I’ve been sparring former Prizefighter champion Michael Lomax, Kris Agyia-Dua. I’ve been sparring all different people because I’ll be fighting all different people in Prizefighter. I’ve been sparring amateurs, all different people really.
