Williams calls-in Holyfield marker; ‘Tank’ Demands Rematch

FT. PIERCE, Florida (May 12, 2011) – Popular Bahamian heavyweight Sherman “The Tank” Williams has called-in his Evander “The Real Deal” Holyfield-marker and demanded an immediate rematch that the future Hall of Famer verbally agreed to after their January 22^nd fight in West Virginia ended in a highly controversial “no contest” due to Holyfield’s left eye suffering a cut from a ‘ruled’ unintentional clash of heads.

 

Williams (34-11-2, 19 KOs) patiently waited through three proposed fights against Holyfield that were cancelled before finally fighting January 22 on a Integrated Sports Media pay-per-view event live from The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs. Williams was led on all three judges’ scorecards, by identical scores of 29-28, after three rounds when referee Dave Johnson surprisingly halted the match.

 

Holyfield returned to the ring last weekend in Denmark, stopping Brien Nielson in the 10^th round.

 

“Holyfield said in the ring during a post fight interview with Benny Ricardo on the pay-per-view show that he would give me a rematch,” Williams said. “It was copied on DVD and posted on You Tube. The referee had no business making that decision or even officiating the fight. The World Boxing Federation could not overruled his bad decision to make it a no contest, but could have taken a stronger position to declare me the champion or demand a rematch. I took that fight very personal. It was originally supposed to happen November 6 and 11, again December 12, and finally did happen January 22. The delays cost me time and money but also gave me extra time to train with John David Jackson to prepare a game plan to beat Holyfield. A rematch with Holyfield not only would be big in the Bahamas, but having the living legend Evander Holyfield fight would be huge throughout the Caribbean. I’ve been waiting for a break my entire career but all I’ve been is continually victimized.

 

“I’m aggressive and Holyfield is a counter-aggressive fighter who has to bounce before he jumps in. I baited him in and hurt him with some big overhand rights. He’s a very intelligent fighter, a genius who cleverly and gets away with a lot in the ring. If you look a replay of our fight, early in the second round there was a clash of heads, but no blood at all.With 10 seconds left I hit him with a shot, another powerful overhand right, and he stumbled back wiping his eye with his glove. That’s when he started bleeding. He came out to fight in the third without a problem seeing, but I hurt him with a body shot that knocked him halfway across the ring and then I almost put him away at the end of the round with more overhand rights. Between rounds the referee went to Holyfield’s corner and gave him his options. That was unusual for a ref to do. The referee helped him to escape, which was ludicrous, and there clearly was no blood flowing when the referee called a halt to the bout. The pay-per-view announcers noted that during the broadcast. When I returned home to the Bahamas, some people who bought the pay-per-view asked me if they could get refunds.Holyfield quit and that certainly didn’t help his ‘Warrior’ reputation. I was robbed!

 

“Then at the post fight press conference he insinuated that I was a dirty fighter trying to hurt him. For his entire career he’s been one of the dirtiest fighters of all time. If a boxer doesn’t want to get hurt, he should play tennis. He hasn’t given me a rematch because he’s either afraid or just unwilling to get back in the ring with me. After a cheap win against Nielson he doesn’t deserve to be considered as a world title fight challenger against the Klitchkos (Wladimir and Vitali) or Haye (David), not without getting past me first. Our fight wasn’t redemption (name of the event) for him.He quit to save his fight in Denmark. Holyfield owes me a fight. I was prepared for victory last January and will be again if he gives me a rematch. I’m not mad at the guy but he should stick to his word. If that cut was so bad why didn’t he get suspended for 60 days? I’m asking the boxing world to support me by holding Holyfield to his word.”

 

Williams went on to say he came to the United States in 2007 to live the American Dream like so many world heavyweight champs he had idolized, only to have his opportunity for a major fight get derailed when Holyfield got away with quitting before Williams knocked out the future Hall of Famer.

 

“The public should demand that Holyfield fight Sherman again,” Williams’ manager Si Stern commented. “What happened that night (Jan. 22) was horrible. I spent a lot of time and money to get that fight done. My fighter trained for months, putting his heart and soul into it, only to get screwed. There’s no doubt about that. It was a terrible decision by the referee. Why didn’t he say anything about the cut coming from a head-butt until after the fight was over?

 

“It’s so sad. Holyfield said in the ring right after the fight, and once again in the post fight press conference, that he’d give us a rematch. Then he goes off to fight a guy who hadn’t fought in nine years. What a travesty! The only reason he won’t fight Sherman is that he’s afraid. The Bahamas would be a perfect spot for a rematch. Sherman’s promoter, David Johnson, has had discussions with officials in the Bahamas and they’ve shown interest. But there are other viable sites with WBF support for Holyfield-Williams II.

 

“This is a fact: The referee never indicated that there was a head-butt during the fight, only after he stopped the fight. There’s no doubt in my mind that Holyfield’s corner wasn’t going to send him out for the fourth round after the beating Sherman gave him in the third round. They would have stopped the fight if the referee hadn’t. Sherman is ready, winning and able to fight Holyfield again. We’re only a call, text or email away.”

Peter ‘Kid Chocolate’ Quillin Now in Sweet Position

LOS ANGELES (May 11, 2011) – Newly-crowned USBO Super Middleweight champion and undefeated prospect,Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin (24-0, 18 KO’s), finds himself in a sweet position after his electrifying knockout of former world title challenger Jesse Brinkley (35-7, 22 KO’s) on April 30 in Reno, Nevada in a fight televised live on TeleFutura’s “Solo Boxeo Tecate.”

 

The 27-year-old Quillin rocked Brinkley in the opening round with an overhand right, showed poise during target practice in the following round, and finished-off the then International Boxing Federation (“IBF”) No. 7-rated Brinkley when referee Joe Cortez mercifully halted the action at 2:34 of the third.

 

“Going into that fight I had a lot more confidence to do in the ring what I had worked so hard on in training camp,” Quillin said. “I orchestrated my camp and was more in rhythm to take care of boxing in order to be an explosive winner. I hurt him in the first round but didn’t go in for the kill. I relaxed and took my shots, realizing I could hit him again at any time. I hit him with a lot of hard, accurate shots. I stayed with our game plan in the second round but my corner (trainer Eric Brown) told me after the second round that Brinkley was ready to go.

 

“Our game plan was to box him the first five rounds and go from there with a lot of pressure. I hurt him in the first but didn’t pressure him then because I didn’t exactly know how he’d react. I never underestimated him because he’s a serious fighter. I didn’t want to risk trying to finish him off then. I was in the biggest fight of my career and just did what was natural. I knew I had a lot of power and he was right there for me to hit. I wanted to show more boxing, go to the body, but the fight only lasted three rounds.”

 

Quillin is now in an enviable position, training at Wild Club Boxing Club under Freddie Roach and Brown, promoted by Golden Boy, and even being mentioned as a participant in a high-profile fight, possibly against Sergio Martinez.

 

“I’ll fight anybody put in front of me as long as everybody – Golden Boy, my manager (John Seip) and corner – all agree that the opponent is the right one at this stage of my career,” Quillin noted.

 

Seip doesn’t believe there’s a rush for “Kid Chocolate” to be in a mega-fight, or need to fight again above middleweight. He noted that Quillin is a relatively young 27 with only 15 amateur matches and no “wars” as a professional having won 84 of 86 rounds.

 

“I’ve been with Petey six years and we’re going to stay the course,” Seip explained. “Why deviate? He’s on his way and totally destroyed Brinkley. He’s getting stronger working with his strength-and-conditioning coach, Brad Bose (Anatomi Gym in Santa Monica), who I call ‘The Professor’ because of his cutting edge programs. We’re sold on Golden Boy, Freddie Roach and Eric Brown, and believe with them he’ll become world champion. Petey has youth, athleticism, speed and power but people still haven’t seen his best punch, yet – left hook – because he’s been hurting guys with his right. I’d like to get him one or two more fights against a top 10, top 5 opponent before putting him in a world title fight. Physically, he’s capable right now, but this is the big time and I want to make sure he’s mentally prepared for the pressures of fighting in a major fight.

 

“He certainly was impressive, looking real strong against Brinkley, but Petey is going back down to 160 for good. We took this one fight against Brinkley because it was a great opportunity, but Petey is a middleweight, and I believe he’s the biggest puncher there. After the fight Brinkley told me Petey hits harder than (Lucian) Bute. We’ve been patient all along and there’s no reason to change now.”

Mitchell answered six questions.

Question: You are already 28 years old and started boxing just three years ago. Do you still feel like you have a long ways to go in boxing?

MITCHELL: “I don’t feel like I have a long way to go although at the same time I feel like there are certain things that I need to improve on.  I think my learning curve has been excellent.  I’ve learned a lot and I have a great trainer (Andre Hunter) who has helped me along the way.  I think my overall boxing game is good.  The one thing I think I can improve on is countering off my defense.  I feel like I have a fairly strong defense but when I go back and watch myself, I see that my opponent will miss, but that the counter is not there.  It’s not second nature for me to do it.  If I think about it, I do it, but it doesn’t come naturally for me.  So countering off my defense is something I’m really working on.”

Question: You have said that if you had never seen NFL player Tom Zbikowski box, then you probably would have never been turned onto the sport of boxing.  Is he someone you would like to fight someday?

MITCHELL: “Absolutely.  I was a casual boxing fan before I started and to see someone like him that I played against in college have success, it really inspired me and got me to pick up the sport.  I can honestly say that if I would have never seen him fight, then I probably wouldn’t be talking to you today.  As far as fighting him goes, we are at two different stages in our careers.  I think he’s 3-0 and I’m 21-0 and I believe he’s a cruiserweight.  If he comes up to heavyweight and gets up there in the rankings then yes, but I’m not going to call him out now.”

Question: Your opponent is nicknamed “The Sandman” because he says his punches put people to sleep.  What do you know about him?

MITCHELL: “He’s about 6-foot-2, 225, 230 pounds.  He’s right-handed and a counter puncher.  He has 18 KOs and good punching power.  I’m going to have to stay focused and watch his punching power.  His record and his KO power say it’s my toughest opponent to date, but that remains to be seen.  I think he has to worry about what I bring to the table.  I’m in tremendous shape and my focus is at an all-time high.  I’ve been fortunate enough to never have been cut or knocked down in my career and I don’t intend to either on Friday night, but I’m not underestimating my opponent.  I just know I’m not going to be the one going to sleep.”

Question: You’ve been to Kuwait and Iraq to visit the U.S. troops on a USO Tour with other boxers.  What was that experience like?

MITCHELL: “It was great and so much more than I expected.  Just to go over and visit them for a week was so special.  To spend time with them and see what they go through on a day-to-day basis was a very humbling experience for me.  It made me appreciate some of the things I take for granted.  It’s just something I’ll never forget.”

Question: Your degree is in criminal justice with a specialization in Homeland Security.  What do you see yourself doing after your boxing career is finished?

MITCHELL: “I might get into the boxing game maybe as an announcer or something, but just doing something that gives back to the community would be my ultimate goal and be what I’d want to do.  I have a big heart and I’m all about helping the youth in my community.  I grew up without a dad but did have a lot of father figures that really helped me out.  I had some great mentors that led me to do the right things, so I think just setting up some programs for the youth would be a great way to give back.”

Question: Who would you most like to fight?
