For Immediate Release 04/25/11 Tampa Bay   FightZone TV Celebrates 3000th Airing   FightZone TV, one of the nation’s largest Independent Distributors of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)  Programming, celebrates their 3000th Broadcast TV airing in May 2011.   In December 2006, FightZone TV aired their first MMA event in Tampa, FL on local cable to over 300,000 homes.   With the explosion of MMA and the thirst of its fans for more and more content, by the end of 2007, FZTV was airing multiple promoters’ events statewide in Florida on Fox Sports Net’s Sun Sports and nationally on DIRECTV and The Dish Network to over 9 million homes.   In 2008, the short lived International Fight League (IFL), which had a contract with various FSN networks, folded and FightZone TV stepped in to fill the MMA gap on Sport South adding 6 additional southern states (GA, TN, NC, SC, MS, AL). U.S. and Russian lineups set for freestyle dual meet, part of the “Beat The Streets Gala” In New York

April 24, 2011- A host of World, Olympic and NCAA Champions are included in the final lineups announced today for the freestyle wrestling dual meet between the United States and Russia, part of the 2011 Beat the Streets Gala on Thursday, May 5 at New York’s Times Square.  The event will be held in Duffy Square in New York City, located in the historic Times Square setting at 46^thStreet. The event is free to the public, and will also be streamed live on TheMat.com by USA Wrestling and be shown on the single largest facing LED screen in Times Square. The USA vs. Russia freestyle wrestling dual meet will begin at 6:00 p.m., following a card of exhibition matches featuring young athletes who wrestle in the Beat the Streets youth program, as well as high school wrestlers from the Public School Athletic League, which will begin at 3:00 p.m.

The U.S. team will include:

• · 2008 Olympic champion Henry Cejudo (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids), who competes at 55 kg/121 lbs. This will be Cejudo’s first competition since winning the Olympic gold at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China.
• · 2009 World silver medalist Jake Herbert (Evanston, Ill./New York AC) will wrestle at 84 kg/185 lbs. Herbert, who also competed in the 2010 World Championships, is coming off his third straight U.S. Open title on April 9 in Cleveland. He was a two-time NCAA champion and a Hodge Trophy winner at Northwestern.
• · 2009 World bronze medalist Tervel Dlagnev (Columbus, Ohio/Sunkist Kids) will compete at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. Dlagnev won his first career U.S. Open title this year. He captured two NCAA Div. II national titles for Nebraska-Kearney.
• · Brent Metcalf (Iowa City, Iowa/New York AC), a member of the 2010 U.S. World Team, will represent the USA at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. Metcalf was a two-time NCAA champion and a Hodge Trophy winner for Iowa.
• · Members of the 2009 U.S. World Team competing in New York will be Shawn Bunch (Columbus, Ohio (Gator WC) at 60 kg/132 lbs. and Jake Varner (State College, Pa./Nittany Lion WC) at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. Bunch was a college star at Edinboro, while Varner won two NCAA titles for Iowa State.
• · At 74 kg/163 lbs., the USA will be represented by Jordan Burroughs (Sicklerville, N.J./Sunkist Kids). Burroughs won his second career NCAA title for Nebraska in March, received the Hodge Trophy, then captured his first U.S. Open national freestyle title in April.

“We have a great American team for this event,” said USA Wrestling National Freestyle Coach Zeke Jones. “When the Russians come to town, we don’t mess around. We are putting a strong team out there.”

The U.S. team will be coached by Jones, along with past Olympic head coach Bobby Douglas of Ames, Iowa. Mike Novogratz of New York, N.Y. is the Team Leader.

Russia is the reigning World Team Champion in freestyle wrestling. Its lineup for the New York City dual meet features a European champion and four Junior World champions and will be very competitive.

Nariman Israpilov, a 2009 European champion, is on the Russian roster at 55 kg/121 lbs. Past Junior World champions in the Russian lineup include Israpilov, plus Magomedmurad Gadzhiev at 66 kg/145.5 lbs., Andrey Valiev at 84 kg/185 lbs. and Shamil Akhmedov at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. Rounding out the Russian roster are young talents Rasul Murtazaliev at 60 kg/132 lbs., Aniuar Geduev at 74 kg/163 lbs. and Barsag Kesaev at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. All three have won medals at the Ivan Yarygin Memorial Grand Prix, considered one of the world’s toughest international competitions.

A U.S. lineup featuring an Olympic champion and three past Hodge Trophy winners will face a Russian lineup showcased by four Junior World champions.

“Russia is the bullseye for us, and we are excited for every chance we can get to wrestle against them,” said Jones. “We know that in our preparation to be the best in the world, we have to knock the Russian wrestlers off. They are very good. We have to be at our very best and ready to go when we face them.”

Each year, the Beat the Streets Gala is held to celebrate wrestling and raise funds for Beat the Streets Wrestling, Inc., the successful program which has provided wrestling opportunities for thousands of middle school and high school students in New York City.

This is the second straight year in which a major Olympic-style competition has been featured as part of the Beat the Streets Gala. In 2010, an all-star challenge featuring top U.S. wrestlers was held on the USS Intrepid, an aircraft carrier docked on the west side of Manhattan.

The Beat the Streets Reception and Awards Ceremony is set for the Hard Rock Café, 1501 Broadway in New York City, starting at 7:30 p.m. There will be a live musical performance by country music legend John Rich at the function.

BRINKLEY – I WANT TO FIGHT FOR A WORLD TITLE AGAIN

April 25th, 2011, Reno — A shot at the championship of the world is why most fighters enter the business of boxing. Terry Malloy, the hero in the 1954 Academy Award winning film, On the Waterfront, explained in a few famous words how his life and boxing career suffered because he failed to reach that level.
“I coulda had class, I coulda been a contender, I coulda been somebody.”

Malloy’s perception as a fighter, and his own perception of himself, was forever damaged because he chose the road more traveled. Although he had the talent, he never became a legitimate world title contender, while the opponents he “danced” with and carried, did.

Jesse Brinkley is no washed up pug from the streets, but his obsession of being a world title contender matches that of Terry Malloy. The difference with Brinkley – the journey is not yet over.

The 35 year old Nevadan has entered the ring 41 times, successful in 35 of those fights. Not only is he an older fighter by age, but the odometer on him as a boxer has steadily increased. A classic boxer-puncher, Brinkley has been in some wars in recent years. He has boxed 218 rounds – some of those rounds have been spent slugging it out with the likes of Curtis Stevens and Lucian Bute. Brinkley feels that he is at the top of his game, but knows that there is not a lot of time left.

“We don’t have time to rebuild. That’s why you have to take a fight with a top guy like Quillin.”
Brinkley is referring to his upcoming April 29th bout against undefeated Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin (23-0, 17 Kos). The fight is scheduled for ten rounds and is for the IBO USBO super-middleweight championship.

“I need this type of fight. If I beat Quillin, that can position me to another world title shot. I want to fight for a world title again. There is a lot on the line for me in this fight.”

Brinkley’s last fight still haunts him. Last October he fought super-middleweight king, Lucian Bute (28-0, 23 KOs) in Montreal, Canada. There, he had a taste of the top of the mountain. For nine rounds, the championship of the world was within his grasp.

“I know I was an underdog, but I never imagined I would lose that fight. I haven’t stopped thinking about it since. I have to be back at that level.”

Brinkley is still a top ten ranked super-middleweight, a legitimate contender, but his performance against Quillin will decide if another world title shot is in his future.

“Brinkley vs. Quillin” will be held at the Reno Events Center in Downtown Reno. The fight will be televised on Telefutura’s Solo Boxeo series. Check local listings. Prices are $33.25, $63.25, and $103.25. Doors open at 6pm, first bell at 7pm. In front of a huge group of their compatriots, an Armenian contingent brought the pain and provided much of the excitement tonight on the undercard of Vic Darchinyan’s sensational TD5 over Yonnhy Perez at the Nokia Theatre L.A. LIVE in Los Angeles.

 

Among them, junior welterweight Art Hovhanessyan (13-0-1, 7 KO’s) stopped a game Jose Alfredo Lugo in the fifth of a scheduled six-round bout and in the undercard fight of the night, junior lightweight Azat Hovhanessyan (no relation) lost his pro debut by unanimous decision, but gained a standing ovation from the large crowd in attendance, as he went to war with California’s Juan Reyes over four scintillating rounds.

 

Undefeated junior welterweight Art was dominant in his dismantling of Lugo. “I felt great in there,” he said post-fight. “I was coming back from 10 months off, but I had no problems picking up where I left off.

 

25-year-old Hovhannisyan had over 250 amateur bouts and captured numerous titles as an amateur and it showed. His blazing hand speed and lightning counter punches were too much for Lugo who tried valiantly in vain.

 

After a knockdown, Referee Zac Young had finally seen enough carnage and mercifully ended Lugo’s night at 1:57.

 

Hovhanessyan is co-promoted by Gary Shaw Productions.

 

After his war with Reyes, Azat Hovhanessyan was sadly disappointed. With a tear in his blackened eyes, he spoke about disappointing his Armenian fans.

 

“I feel terrible for letting them down. He (Reyes) was a strong fighter and because I was making the jump from amateur to pro he surprised me. I will be back.”

 

Hovhanessyan has nothing to be ashamed of, as his performance and that of Reyes (now 1-0-1) were the kind that, regardless of who won or lost, gained both men a ton of fans. Back and forth they went, trading momentum and nuclear bombs on each other’s chins as the appreciative crowd went into frenzy.

 

“Can you believe this fight?” shouted incredulous legendary broadcaster Al Bernstein.

 

The difference may have been the fact that Reyes was able to wobble Hovhanessyan in the third.

 

Regardless, both fighters will live to fight another day and can always hang their hats on the fight they put on tonight. It was the definition of heart and the will to win.

LOS ANGELES (April 23, 2011) –  In one of the most powerful performances of his career, two-division world champion Vic“Raging Bull” Darchinyan dominated former International Boxing Federation (IBF) bantamweight titlist Yonnhy “El Colombiano” Perez en route to winning a fifth-round technical decision and the vacant International Boxing Organization (IBO) 118-pound title Saturday on SHOWTIME® .

 

The diminutive Darchinyan was in total command from the outset of a scheduled 12-round bout at Nokia Theatre L.A. LIVE, scored a knockdown in the second and was ahead 50-44 on the three scorecards when the one-sided slugfest was halted due to an accidental headbutt at 1:44 of the round.

 

Southpaw Darchinyan, of Sydney, Australia, by way of Armenia, improved to 36-3-1 with 27 knockouts while Colombia’s Perez, of Santa Fe Springs, Calif., fell to 20-2-1 with 14 KOs after losing his second consecutive start.

 

By winning a fight elevated to main event status after a bout between IBF champion Joseph Agbeko and undefeated Abner Mares was postponed after Agbeko withdrew after suffering what doctors diagnosed as likely the sudden onset of sciatica earlier in the week, Darchyinan sets himself up for possible rematches with both Agbeko and Mares, both of whom he lost decisions to.

 

It also likely means another possible appearance on SHOWTIME for the crowd-pleasing Darchinyan, who made his 13^thappearance on the network Saturday night. He is No. 3 on the all-time list for network appearances behind Julio Cesar Chavez (17) and Evander Holyfield.

 

“He took big punches,’’ Darchinyan said afterward. “I wanted to knock him out, but he is still a great fighter. It was a headbutt.  But if it wasn’t a headbutt, I’d knock him out. No more boxing in my style.

“Today I’d fight anyone in the division. I’d like to fight Abner Mares if he’d fight me.  If not, I’ll fight Nonito Donaire.  If they won’t fight me, I’ll move up to another division.”

Darchinyan was under the impression that Perez did not want to continue after a headbutt opened a cut on his brow close to the right eye. But although blood spurted immediately, ringside physician, Dr. Paul Wallace, said it was not the case.

 

“Perez suffered from an arterial bleed,’’ Wallace explained. “One of his blood vessels had been cut and it was pumping directly into his eye.  He gave no indication he wanted to stop.”

Perez offered no excuses after suffering his second consecutive defeat.

 

“I know it appeared differently from the outside but I was just getting warmed up,’’ he said. “At the beginning, I felt that Darchinyan was not as heated up as I expected him to be.  I felt I was making headway in the later rounds.

“(But) I am disappointed that the fight ended this way. My head feels fine. I would have continued had the referee not called the fight. The knock down was legitimate — he caught me.

 

“Now I will head back to Colombia, relax and regroup and then decide the next move in my career.”

The Ward-Abraham winner will advance to the Finals against the winner of the Saturday, June 4 Super Six World Boxing Classic Semifinal and WBC super middleweight title fight between defending champion Carl Froch (27-1, 20 KOs) andGlen Johnson (51-14-2, 35 KOs) at Adrian Phillips Ballroom at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J., on SHOWTIME (9 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast)).
