Captain Boyd Melson returns May 19!

New York, NY (April 21, 2011) – US Army Captain and multi-time amateur champion Boyd “Rainmaker” Melson will return to the ring against an opponent to be named in a four round junior middleweight bout Thursday, May 19 at the Roseland Ballroom in his hometown of New York, NY.

Following an amateur career where he defeated the likes of Deandre Latimore and Keith Thurman, Melson’s won his first two professional bouts. However, the 29 year old West Point graduate’s story expands far beyond what he can do inside the squared circle.

For his third time in as many fights, Melson will donate his entire purse to “Justadollarplease,” a Non-Profit set up to raise the much needed funds for the first spinal cord injury trial in the United States using umbilical cord stem cells.

“I’m hoping we can raise the funds to get the trial date set,” said Melson, who raised thousands of dollars just from both of his fight purses and generous donations from fans that were in attendance. “We need all of the help possible and every dollar helps us get one step closer to potentially improving at least one human being’s life.”

Although he has plenty on his plate, including a full time corporate job and Army Reserve responsibilities in addition to the umbilical cord stem cell trial, Melson is training hard to deliver a strong performance.

“My intensity level entering the ring will be much higher this time. I am planning to bring back the same energy that I had when I was training full time in the Army’s World Class Athlete Program but still make intelligent choices at the same time. I am definitely looking forward to giving all of those in attendance that support my causes along with whatever it is that I represent a continued reason to believe that miracles can happen one punch at a time.”

Leon Moore wants his first world title shot to ‘Hurry Up’ and finally happen

NEW YORK (April 21, 2011) – World Boxing Council No. 3 rated super bantamweight Leon “Hurry Up” Moore is ready for his first world title shot and he’s willing to travel from his new home in New York City to Japan if that’s what it takes to challenge WBC champion Toshiaki Nishioka.

 

The 32-year-old southpaw Moore (28-2, 22 KOs), a native of Guyana, is the reigning PABA and WBC CABOFE super bantamweight champion, as well as the former NABA, Guyanese and CABOFE bantamweight titlist. He moved to the Big Apple earlier this year after signing a promotional contract with New York City-based Boxing 360.

 

“Nishioka has been a great world champion who has given top challengers their title shots for the past few years,” Moore said. “But now it’s my time and I’m ready to challenge him right in his home country. I’ve heard that his promoter (Honda) wants to make his next fight in Las Vegas. Hey, I’ll fight him in Japan, Las Vegas, New York or on a cruise ship in the Pacific Ocean. Whatever it takes, I’m willing and able to fight him for his belt. My nickname is ‘Hurry Up’ and that’s how I feel about my title shot. Let’s make it happen, Toshiaki.”

 

Nishioka (38-4-3, 24 KOs) captured the WBC crown back in 2008, when he won a 12-round decision against Napapol Sor Rungvisia. The Japanese warrior has successfully defended his title belt six times against Gernaro Garcia, Jhonny Gonzalez, Ivan Hernandez, Balweg Bangoyan, Rendall Munroe and earlier this month versus Mauricio Javier Munoz.

 

Moore is riding a 10-fight, four-year win streak including a unanimous 12-round decision against former two-time world champion Maurico Pastrana for the WBC CABOFE and NABA bantamweight belts in September 2009, as well as a unanimous 12-round decision versus Indonesia Boxing Association champion Marangin Marbun for the vacant PABA crown in January 2010. His last action was a win by six-round decision in a stay-busy fight this past April 2 in Brooklyn against veteran Felipe Almanza, marking Moore’s U.S. debut.

KO-KING TYE FIELDS GUNNING FOR THE PRIZEFIGHTER INTERNATIONAL CROWN

American with 41 knockouts from 45 wins joins May 7 line-up

Knockout American fighter Tye Fields is the latest man to join the line-up for Prizefighter International Heavyweights Alexandra Palace on May 7.

The 6ft 8in southpaw known as “Big Sky” has 41 knockouts from his 45 wins as a pro, and his incredible knockout percentage means fans are in for a treat when the 36 year-old enters the ring in the 18^th edition of Matchroom Sport’s eight-man, one night tournaments, live on Sky Sports.

Fields turned pro in 1999 and he won his first 14 fights with knockouts or stoppages inside the first round. In total, 27 of Fields’ 48 professional fights have ended inside three minutes – including two of his three losses – and 40 of his fights have finished inside three rounds. The Montana born fighter, who now lives in Canada, counts former World champion Bruce Seldon, Saul Montana, Ed Mahone and Maurice Harris as notable scalps in his career so far.

“I’m delighted to welcome Tye to the Prizefighter International Heavyweights line up,” said Matchroom Sport’s managing director Eddie Hearn. “With 45 wins and 41 knockouts, Tye is the perfect choice for the event and fans can expect fireworks from him on May 7. This event is shaping up to be a classic and all the fighters know that victory here could lead to a World Title shot later this year.”

He joins fellow American Kevin ‘Kingpin’ Johnson who boasts 24 victories and just one defeat, a points loss to Vitali Klitschko in a WBC title challenge in December 2009, David Haye’s Puerto Rican sparring partner Fres Oquendo and unbeaten Irish-based Cuban Mike ‘The Rebel’ Perez, who holds ten knockout victories from 13 fights, all inside three rounds.

UK Prizefighter Heavyweight champion Michael Sprott will be flying the flag on home-soil while French Heavyweight champ Gregory Tony and big-hitting German Konstantin Airich, who holds 13 knockouts from 16 wins and is remembered for a crazy fight with Danny Williams in May 2008, are also confirmed in the line-up, with one fighter still to be named.

A standing room only crowd of national and international media packed the Wild Card Boxing Club on Wednesday to interview Pacquiao, five-time Trainer of the Year Freddie Roach and Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum about Pacquiao’s May 7 World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight title defense, at the sold-out MGM Grand in Las Vegas,Nev., against three-division world champion Sugar Shane Mosley.

 

The Pacquiao vs. Mosley world title fight is the main event of a four-fight telecast that will be produced and distributed live bySHOWTIME PPV® beginning at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT.
