UFC fighter “Danny Boy” Downes headlines exciting event

Thursday, April 11, 2011 (Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA): Rising MMA fight promotion North American Fighting Championship(NAFC) has announced its next event, entitled “MAYHEM,” which will take place on Friday, May 6^th at the Potawatomi Bingo Casino Expo Center, located at 1721 West Canal Street, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The main event of the evening features rising UFC lightweight Daniel “Danny Boy” Downes (7-1) as he battles an opponent to be determined. A noted finisher, Downes has stopped five of his seven victims, and will surely put on an electrifying performance as he looks to continue his success in his young career. Over fifteen bouts are scheduled to take place at “MAYHEM.”

Doors will open at 5 PM, with the undercard starting at 6 PM, and the main card starting at 8 PM. “Danny Boy” Downes turned professional in 2007, and gained experienced in promotions such as King of the Cage and the NAFC’s predecessor, Gladiators Cage Fighting. The talented young fighter punched out five of his six first opponents, earning his way into World Extreme Cagefighting, where he made his debut in 2010. Downes first took on Chris Horodecki in the WEC, replacing the injured Ed Ratcliff on just a few day’s notice. After a rough-and-tough bout, Downes succumbed to a third round submission. Yet, “Danny Boy” showed enough talent and determination to garner a return trip to the WEC cage. In December 2010, the Roufusport product competed on the last-ever WEC event, gaining a unanimous decision victory over Chinese MMA star Tiequan Zhang. Now part of the UFC, “Danny Boy” is poised to burst onto the fight scene impressive fashion.

The co-main event showcases another highly anticipated bout between UFC veteran Sean Salmon (17-9) and fast-rising up-and-comer Joe Cason (7-0), who wrestled with UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones at Iowa Central Community College. Cason appears to be on a similar career trajectory as his former teammate, finishing all seven of his fights in the first round. He has five T/KOs and two submissions, and five times his opponents have failed to escape the first minute of the fight. His last fight ended in a 15-second TKO at Iowa Challenge 62.

Salmon, a Milwaukee native hoping to do his hometown proud, has hit a rough patch in his career, dropping his past three fights, and will look to get back on track against his super-talented opponent. Salmon’s stint in the UFC included losses to two top contenders, former light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans and middleweight contender Alan Belcher. In his 18 career victories, Salmon has finished his opponents with 6 T/KOs and 7 submissions. He possesses strong wrestling, and is always a threat to finish a fight.

With these two captivating bouts headlining Wisconsin’s most talent-filled pro MMA card in history, NAFC’s“MAYHEM” is sure to excite local fight fans!

Also featured on the card is WEC veteran John Hosman (16-7-1), as well as Strikeforce veterans Zach Underwood(8-3) and Gerric “The Silent Assassin” Hayes (7-6). Hosman faces undefeated local Wisconsin fighter Matt Brown(5-0), while Underwood takes on Milwaukee prospect Jose “Te Mano” Pacheco (2-1) and Hayes squares off with undefeated Milwaukee prospect Jason “Kaz” Kazmierczak (2-0).

Latimore targets Williams for summer showdown & predicts KO victory

ST. LOUIS (April 20, 2011) – Fresh off of his dominant victory by eight-round decision against veteran Dennis Sharpe last Saturday night on the Victor Ortiz-Andre Berto card at MGM Grand Theater at Foxwoods, International Boxing Federation #6-rated junior middleweight Deandre “The Bull” Latimore (22-3, 17 KOs) has targeted Paul “The Punisher” Williams for a summer showdown, predicting a career-defining win by knockout for himself.

 

Williams (39-2, 27 KOs), once known as the most avoided man in boxing, reportedly  needs a solid opponent for his July 9 return on HBO, in which he will attempt  to rebound from his devastating Knockout of the Year loss last November to Sergio Martinez. Latimore is more than up to filling that slot if Williams is truly serious.

 

“I will knockout Paul Williams,” Latimore confidently forecasted. “I take nothing away from him. He’s still one of the best fighters in the world but I’m near my prime and still getting better every day. It’s time for me to break through and beating Williams on HBO is the way to do that. I think me and Williams makes for a great TV fight, one that fans want to see, and it should be easy to make, too. I’m looking for a big opportunity on one of the major networks to showcase the new, complete Deadre Latimore. Williams says he is the most avoided fighter in boxing. Well, I’m not avoiding him, and he needs to put up or shut up. Let’s do it!”

 

St. Louis-bred Latimore, who now lives in Las Vegas, stopped Sechew Powell (23-1) for his signature victory to date, nearly three years ago by seventh-round technical knockout, setting the stage for an All-St. Louis title fight April 24, 2009 between Latimore and Cory Spinks for the vacant IBF strap. Spinks (36-5) won a controversial 12-round split decision (115-112, 113-114, 112-115) and two fights later in a rematch, Latimore dropped a 12-round majority decision to Powell in an IBF title eliminator. Powell, as the No. 1 contender, is now set to challenge IBF champion Cornelius “K9” Bundrage on June 25, ironically, right in Latimore’s hometown of St. Louis.

 

Latimore is co-promoted by Rumble Time Promotions and DiBella Entertainment.

 

“We know we have a finished Deandre Latimore,” Rumble Time Promotions President and CEO Steven Smith noted. “He went through a lot of trials and errors, but he’s with the right trainer now, Ray Franklin, who was Kenny Adams’ assistant when he trained Latimore. When Deandre turned pro, he had that big punch, but not a lot of movement. Now, he does it all using jabs, angles and defense with a lot of movement and, as the boxing world knows, he can flat-out punch. He’s also in the best cardio shape of his life because of Ray. When Deandre knocked down Spinks in the first round, he faded in the later rounds, but he doesn’t have that problem anymore. Ray absorbed everything when he worked with Adams and strength and conditioning has always been his major strength.

 

“Power and movement is why Deandre will beat Paul Williams. It is the same combination that Sergio Martinez used to knockout Williams. I think we’ll do the same thing with the same result. Paul Williams wasn’t just knocked out in his last fight, he was demolished, and we think he’s mentally done. A fighter never gets over something like that. As soon as he feel’s Deandre’s power, he will fold-up again. If Williams fails to accept our challenge, we’ll fight Erislandy Lara any place, anytime.”

 

The 25-year-old Latimore pitched a complete shutout against the battle-tested Sharpe, winning each of the eight rounds on all three judges’ scorecards by identical scores of 80-72. From start to finish, the stylish southpaw repeatedly displayed his full arsenal of punishing punches landing on Sharpe’s head and body, ranging from left upper cuts to right hooks and everything in between.  Before entering the ring to fight Latimore, Sharpe had fought some of the top, young 154-pounders in the world such as Andy Lee, Pawel Wolak, Giovanni Lorenzo and Peter Quillin.

 

“I give myself an A+ grade for my last fight,” Latimore added. “I did everything we had worked on in training camp. I wanted to show HBO and everybody else what I can do; not only can I knockout people, I can box, move, not get hit and still be punishing. Paul Williams will find that out for himself if he fights me July 9^th.”

Nick is fighting close to his home in Buffalo and everybody’s anxious to see him back in the ring after a long absence. It wasn’t easy finding a suitable opponent for Nick because he’s so talented. Nick had some personal issues in the past but he’s fully focused now on his boxing career. He’s only 25 years old but experienced having had 26 pro fights.

 

“I wasn’t sure about getting involved in female boxing until I saw Amanda’s last fight live from ringside. She’s unbelievably impressive in and out of the ring. All Amanda does is train to fight, everyday to the point of exhaustion, then she goes home to sleep, and starts all over again the next day at the gym. Amanda is a world champion in the making and this fight will help position her for that opportunity.”

 

Casal (29-4-1, 15 KOs), who was a highly decorated U.S. amateur, returns to the ring for the first time since November 6, 2009, when he won an eight-round decision against Christopher Fernandez. His opponent Friday night in a six-round bout is veteran Martin Tucker (7-8, 3 KOs), who was the third different fighter to accepted the fight against the gifted Casal. Tucker has been somewhat of a gatekeeper for the 147-pound division having fought top prospects such as undefeated Sharif Bogere (19-0, 2 KOs) and Ivan Popoca (15-0-1, 10 KOs), and he also upset previously unbeaten Michael Torres (13-0).

 

In 2004, Casal turned pro and he was unbeaten in his first 17 pro bouts, including a pair of draws. Nick extended current WBC Silver champion Antonio “Tony” DeMarco, former WBC Interim light titlist, the full 10 rounds in 2002 in a losing effort (94-96, 93-93, 97-93) that still demonstrated his vast potential

 

The 23-year-old Serrano (8-0-1, 4 KOs) was born in Puerto Rico but she now lives and fights out of Brooklyn. The slick-boxing younger sister of former lightweight contender, Cindy Serrano, faces former IWBF champion Ela “Bam Bam” Nunez (9-8, 2 KOs) for the third time. They fought to a four-round draw in 2009, marking the lone blemish on Amanda’s pro record, and Serrano won a six-round decision (59-55, 59-55, 58-56) this past January. Their trilogy fight is scheduled for six rounds.

 

Both fighters are world rated: Serrano WBAN #3, WBC #4, GBU #5 and WIBA #6, Nunez GBU #4, WBAN #7 and WBC #11.
