Official decisions are final! Is it time for Instant Replay?
Posted on | March 29, 2011 | No Comments
Should officials decisions be final when we have technology that can support them right or wrong? After watching the 141 pound NCAA match at the championships in Philadelphia I started asking some questions. People I respect in our sport are now starting to talk a little louder, starting to endorse some changes. Instant replay in our sport? We don’t need it you say. I want you to hold your judgement until you watch the replay of the match between Russell and Marion at 141 pounds. Click here to watch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zYZOFCyZno8
Marion and Russell go into overtime tied 1 to 1. Skipping ahead to 11:45 with 25 seconds left in the first O/T, Marion with the first take down and Russell’s butt is actually on the mat (Marion’s head is now free) – If you said 2 POINTS you would be right! The Second take down comes moments later when Marion has Russell’s back and BOTH of Russell’s hands are on the mat – If you said 2 POINTS you are right again. Both take downs were not called. I’m certain that if the officials had the chance to see both instances in replay they would have reversed their no calls.
All coaches and athletes over the years have been the recipient of bad calls or no calls or dare I say it, pay back calls. That is no excuse for no action today. Some calls or no calls are more obvious than others.
In the attached interview listen to the words of one of the most respected and opinionated coaches in our sport, Bobby Douglas. He knows that The time has come for our coaches, our leaders to address this situation on a bigger scale. Take the initiative and stand up for the sport and for the athletes. Only the coaches can Insist on instant replay. We have the technology and there is not an official out there that will head in to a Hall of Fame and step up to receive his award and say “I accept this recognition with the exception of a few bad calls, no calls or mistakes…..”
Wrestling fans, coaches and administrators this is a huge opportunity as we look for ways for our international athletes to climb back in to medal contention. Let’s do this the right way and as Bobby Douglas said, “Do it now rather than later”. It’s got to be done.

Coach Jim Beichner Named MAC Wrestling Coach of the Year, Talks to Takedown
Posted on | March 29, 2011 | No Comments
CLEVELAND, OH – Following one of the most successful seasons in program history, including a record six national tournament
qualifiers, head wrestling coach Jim Beichner was named the Mid American Conference coach of the year, as announced today by the
conference. The honor comes in addition to Beichner being named NYS Division I Coach of the Year twice (1996, 2004), East Coast
Wrestling Association Coach of the Year and the Amateur Wrestling News Rookie Coach of the Year during his 16 seasons at Buffalo.
“I am very excited for our program to receive this award. It is truly an honor to receive this from my peers in the MAC,” Beichner said.
“We have a great group of coaches and programs within the MAC and I have a tremendous amount of respect for each program and
our fellow MAC coaches.”
Buffalo tied with Kent State as both programs sent six wrestlers to the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championship, the most of any MAC
wrestling program. After sending a program-Division I record six wrestlers to the NCAA championships, Beichner has now guided 41
student athletes to the national tournament during his tenure.
In addition, Buffalo finished third in the 2011 MAC Wrestling Tournament as Andrew Schutt (141), Desi Green (149), Mark
Lewandowski (157) and John-Martin Cannon (165) each won their weight class for the Bulls. The third-place finish tied the program’s
best finish in the conference tournament since joining.
“The award is really the result of our athletes beginning with our four MAC Champions and it permeates down to the five wrestlers
that placed in the MAC championships and through the entire team, our backups and red-shirts,” Beichner added.
At the NCAA tournament, Buffalo wrestlers won six matches, highlighted by sophomore Mark Lewandowski earning a top-12 finish,
just one win away from becoming an All-American. All six of the national qualifiers will return in 2011-12 as the team will only lose
three wrestlers from the team.
It was not just the work of the wrestlers, Beichner said, but also all the members of the coaching staff.
“There is no chance that I would have received this honor with the efforts of my assistant coaches, Frank Beasley, Ricky Deubel and
Jeff Catrabone and strength & conditioning coach Nate Harvey. It’s also an award that has to be shared with our trainer – Allison
Zulawski, the administration (sport supervisor Paul Vecchio) and other administrative support staff. There are a few other support staff
members people that need to be thanked – Danny Bishop, Administrative Assistant, Joe Muscarella and Micky Moran. I am extremely
lucky that we have so much help and support. With their help, we are definitely headed in the right direction.”
Kent State’s Dustin Kilgore was awarded the Wrestler of the Year award and Ohio’s Jeremy Johnson was named Freshman of the Year.
All three awards were voted on by each of the conference’s six head wrestling coaches.
“I sincerely appreciate this recognition and hope that our program wins future awards such as this one because we are consistently
winning MAC Championships, producing all-americans and future NCAA champions. I am very proud of everyones efforts and we
plan to do even more,” Beichner said.

BARKER: I’M NOT BONKERS – I WANT SERGIO MARTINEZ!
Posted on | March 29, 2011 | No Comments
Dazzling Darren targets Argentine after European title
‘Dazzling’ Darren Barker knows people may call him “bonkers” for saying it, but believes he could be the man to stop WBC Emeritus and The Ring Middleweight champion Sergio Martinez.
Barker takes on Domenico Spada at London Olympia on April 30 live on Sky Sports in a fight for the EBU European Middleweight title he vacated in September, and should the Londoner extend his unbeaten professional stretch to 23 victories, he wants a shot at the Argentine ranked third in the pound-for-pound list.
Martinez’s camp recently included Barker in a quartet of possible opponents for the southpaw and Barker’s camp returned the favour, with his new promoter Eddie Hearn contacting them and expressing an interest in a fight in July. Barker accepted he would be the underdog in the fight, but the 28 year-old insisted that he could shock the world and defeat the 2010 Ring Magazine fighter of the year.
“I know some people might think I’m bonkers even saying his name in the same breath as mine, but I fancy I could cause a mad upset, I really do,” said Barker. “He’s a class act, a top, top level performer – but I’ve got a good knack with southpaws from my Repton days, and it’s got to end for him someday so why not to me?
“What’s the point in stalling? I’m 28 now, I’m in my prime, a year out is not going to hurt me – I train hard, I get good sparring and I’m always in good nick. I want to start where I left off and carry that journey onto fighting the big names.
“I’ve got the same mentality as David Haye – I don’t want to be fighting in my 40s, I don’t want to be like a Martinez – my prime is now, I want to jump on that and make the most of it.”
With a month to go until his showdown with Rome-native Spada, Barker said he was fully-focused on defeating the 30 year-old who has yet to be stopped in his 35-fight career – with 32 wins and three points losses. Spada is ranked number seven by the WBC, one place below Barker and the home favourite knows the Italian will provide a stiff test in Kensington. Barker is also seeking an improvement on his last performance when he claimed the European belt a year ago against Affif Belghecham on points.
“He’s a tough, experienced campaigner, he likes to come forward and he’s very aggressive so I’ll have to be on my guard,” said Barker. “Bottom line is though – I want my European title back. The last time out I was very disappointed and I know I’m miles better than that. For the first couple of rounds I showed what I am capable of and I almost had him out of there. It was common knowledge that I was injured and I had a hip operation right after, but I had nothing left in me in the fight and I hadn’t run for two years. Training and running has been fantastic for this one though, I feel like I did five years ago – I’m fresh, enthusiastic, and hungry – life is great at the minute and I know it’s going to get even better on April 30.”
Tickets for Darren Barker v Domenico Spada are available now from Matchroom Sport priced £35 unreserved, £60 ringside, £80 inner ringside and £120 VIP – to buy call Matchroom Sport on 01277 359900.
