Ally Pally will host Prizefighter International Heavyweights on May 7

Matchroom Sport is delighted to announce that the Prizefighter International Heavyweights will take place at Alexandra Palace on May 7, live on Sky Sports.

The 18^th edition of the tournament promises to be the biggest night since the series began in April 2008. It’s the first time fighters from outside the UK and Ireland have been invited to take part as Prizefighter continues to expand into different territories.

Leading the early line-up is American Kevin ‘Kingpin’ Johnson, the 31 year-old New Jersey fighter boasts 24 victories and just one defeat, a points loss to Vitali Klitschko in a WBC title challenge in December 2009. Johnson is joined by Belfast’s Martin Rogan, the first ever Prizefighter winner and former Commonwealth champion.

Unbeaten Irish-based Cuban Mike ‘The Rebel’ Perez holds ten knockout victories from 13 fights, all inside three rounds, and he is joined by two other power-punchers who should revel in Prizefighter’s all-action format. Former WBF champion Richel Hersisia – known as ‘The Dutch Sonny Liston – has 25 knockouts from his 32 victories, while big-hitting German Konstantin Airich holds 13 knockouts from 16 wins and is remembered for a crazy fight with Danny Williams in May 2008. Further names are expected to be added this week as promoters Matchroom Sport promise an explosive night of action with a multi-national flavour.

“This event has been bubbling up for over a year now and I am so excited we have finally made it happen,” said Matchroom Sport’s managing director Eddie Hearn. “As Prizefighter starts its international expansion, this flagship event couldn’t have come at a better time and British boxing fans are in for a real treat on May 7.

“As always the line-up will combine an eclectic mix of prospects, champions and characters as these eight men look to fight their way into contention for a shot at the World Heavyweight title,” added Hearn. “In Martin Rogan we have a man that epitomises Prizefighter, our first ever champion and a guy looking to force his way back into the big-time.

“Johnson will be the first American fighter signed for Prizefighter and has lost only once, in a points decision to Vitali Klitschko for the WBC title. Former WBF champ Richel Hersisia boasts a high knockout percentage, Perez is a highly rated Cuban prospect that is out to shock the World while Airich is a tough knockout artist from Germany – you only have to watch his fight with Danny Williams to see what he will bring on the night.”

With Prizefighter’s TV distribution already reaching key international boxing markets in USA and Canada, Australasia, Eastern Europe, the Far East and the Middle East, Hearn says competition will be fierce as he decides the final two spots in the May 7 line-up.

Phil Gill Set For Barker-Spada Undercard On 30th April

Waltham Abbey Light Welterweight Phil Gill is set for major television exposure, when he appears on the undercard of ‘Dazzling’ Darren Barker’s European Middleweight Title showdown with Italian Domenico Spada at the Matchroom Sports promoted event at Olympia in Kensington, London, on Saturday 30th April 2011.

Gill, whose record is 9 wins, 1 draw and no losses, has consistently proved himself to be one of the most crowd pleasing Light Welters on the circuit today. Gill’s nonstop all action performance on his last outing, on Steve Goodwin’s 5th March show, is a prime example of what a wider television audience have been missing, until now.

Gill went to work hard and fast right from the opening bell, letting rip with both hands throughout the first round. His excellent ring craft barely allowed Nesbitt get any meaningful shots of his own in.

Gill didn’t quite get to dominate the second round quite to the level of the first as Nesbitt managed to find his range and let go with a couple of cracking right hands to the body. Gill didn’t drop the pace and just responded with even more fast powerful left and rights.

Round three was more even with both protagonists letting rip with shot after shot in quick succession, in fact this round could have gone to either way as both came so close to stopping the other at one point.

In the first minute Gill let rip with a cracking left-right body head combination but was unable to finish off the clearly shaken Nesbitt. From then on it was a punch trading war until the final seconds when Nesbitt turned the tables with a hard right to the body that really rattled Gill, Nesbitt turned the tables and started to let rip with both hands until the final bell.

The final round was much as before, with both pushing hard. Throughout the contest Gill had not only thrown more shots but also landed the most meaningful ones and was rightly pronounced victor by a 39-37 points margin.

With performances such as this it comes as no surprise that promoter’s like Steve Goodwin have made Gill a regular attraction on his shows and Barry Hearn’s Matchroom Sports concern have decided to include him on the card for such a high profile event as Barker-Spada European Title showdown.

Speaking earlier today an overjoyed Gill said, “Yeah I’ve got on the bill of the Darren Barker show on the 30th April at London Olympia. It’s a big step up for me, obviously it’s in front of a bigger crowd than I’m used to.

I’m really looking forward to that, I wont be fazed by that either as I’m the kind of fighter that performs best in front of a big crowd. I’m getting well excited as there’ll be more people there.

No opponents been named yet as it’s only come about in the last few days. Mickey’s (manager Mickey Helliet) had a show this weekend, so now that show is out of the way we’ll start sorting out the tickets and all the details later this week.

I never got out of the gym after my last fight because we got a young lad from Guernsey training. I know it’s hard training on your own so I’ve been in the gym to train with him as It helps him to work harder.

My style has changed quite a bit since my debut. I’m definitely a come forward fighter. There’s a lot of guys that wont come and fight me because they know they are going to be in for a hard time if they come and fight me. All I ever do is come forward, I’ll never change that because I don’t want to be a boring fighter I always want to be exciting, it’s just not in me to box of the back foot. For me it’s about entertaining, give the crowd the full experience as it were.

I think when the nation sees me on TV they wont want me off of it, I bring a lot to the table being a very exciting fighter. I’m not afraid of getting hit, I know in boxing your not supposed to be getting hit, but you do get hit it’s as simple as that. I not worried about taking a shot, if I have to take a few in a fight it makes it exciting.

If these guys are going to come to fight they’re going to get put over and that’s what you’re going to get on TV. These guys are going to come to fight, because it’s on TV, and they’re going to get put over.

I box to the occasion, the bigger the occasion the better I perform.”

Phil Gill, against a yet to be named opponent will feature on the undercard of the Sky Sports Televised Matchroom Sports promoted vacant European Middleweight Title fight between unbeaten ‘Dazzling’ Darren Barker and Domenico Spada at Olympia in Kensington, London on Saturday 30th April 2011.

Brazil’s Prodigal Son Michael Oliveira Returns Home to Capture Interim WBC Title

SAO PAULO, Brazil (March 25, 2011) – Somebody’s “O” had to go in tonight’s Brazilian-Argentinean showdown between unbeaten prospects, as Michael “The Brazilian Rocky” Oliveira’s rising popularity in his native country continued to grow with his 10-round unanimous decision victory against a game Abel Nicolas “El Principito” Adriel, headlining the “International Boxing Challenge” pro-am event at Mauro Pinheiro Gymnasium in Sao Paulo.

 

The 20-year-old Oliveira (14-0, 11 KOs), rated No. 10 by the USBA, captured the Interim World Boxing Council Latino Super Middleweight Championship, defeating (98-92, 98-92, 97-93) previously undefeated Adriel (10-1-2, 2 KOs) in front of a spirited, partisan crowd.

 

“International Boxing Challenge,” presented by MO Productions, aired live on TV Globo Network, SporTV cable, GloboEsporte and TV Globo International.

 

Brazilians and Argentineans are traditional arch-rivals in sports and the 21-year-old Adriel, who fights out of Buenos Aires, was a natural foe for the hard-punching Oliveira. The extremely active Adriel is a consummate boxer who has now had 13 fights in only 14 months as a professional.

 

“He changed his style,” Oliveira said after the fight. “I usually fight on the inside but he fought on the inside, and I had to fight on the outside. My performance was sufficient to win and put smiles on the faces of the fans here tonight, but I’m not smiling. I know I’m 100 times better than I showed. I knew he didn’t have any power and he liked to work the body, but he didn’t go to the body as much as I had expected. When he started protecting himself downstairs, I went back upstairs at the end of the fight. It was a fight of adjustments.”

 

Oliveira, the repeat winner of the Brazilian International Press Award’s Athlete of the Year (2009 and 2010), was born in Sao Paulo but he moved two weeks after birth to Miami with his family. He made his Brazilian debut last November, stopping Junior Ramos in the third round, and remains committed to re-establishing boxing in Brazil.

 

“I think the people here in Brazil have put me on a pedestal but I’m really not there, yet,” Oliveira noted. “This fight was a valuable learning experience for me. I got sidetracked, expecting one thing from him, and I getting something else. You know, it was like at Christmas when you expect a ball but get a doll. He was tough and I’ll be better because of this fight.”

 

Oliveira expects to return to the ring once again in Sao Paulo in late May or early June.

 

Brazil’s last superstar boxer, 4-time world champion Acelino “Popo” Freitas, was in attendance supporting Oliveira.

 

“This was a very structured event and an incredible project,” Freitas commented. “Michael is very humble and calm in the ring. I flew two hours from my home to support him and what MO Productions is doing for boxing in Brazil.”
