Tachi teams with Sherdog for May 6th stream

Lemoore, Calif. – Tachi Palace Fights announced its 13-bout May 6^th “The Contenders” mixed martial arts card today as well as its plans to stream the event on Sherdog.com.

“We say it all the time, but this will be one of the best fight cards that we’ve ever put together,” Tachi Palace Fights matchmaker Richard Goodman said. “From top to bottom we will have action-packed, exciting, hard-hitting bouts.”

Tachi Palace Fights once again will put the flyweights on center stage, as the main event features a flyweight bout between San Clemente, Calif.’s Ian McCall (9-2) and Franklin, Tenn.’s Dustin Ortiz (7-0). McCall is coming off a decision victory over the previously ranked No. 1 flyweight in the world, Brazil’s Jussier da Silva (9-1) which moved him into the Top 10 rankings at No. 3.

Meanwhile, Ortiz is a Strikeforce veteran and a proven finisher, winning all of his bouts by stoppage.

“The flyweights are our marquee division. We are going to continue to have the very best possible flyweights compete on all of our shows,” Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino Entertainment Coordinator Jeremy Luchau said. “We wanted initially to have McCall take on our current champ Darrell Montague, but Montague sustained some injuries in his last bout and was unable to compete in May.”

Luchau noted that Montague (9-1) would defend his title at Tachi Palace Fights 10 on Friday, August 5^th.

“McCall certainly earned a shot at the title with his victory over the previously ranked No. 1 fighter in the world. That’s the match we wanted for May, but we couldn’t make it happen,” Luchau said. “It shows the type of fighter that McCall is to stay on the card and fight, rather than hold out to fight Montague and we are very honored to have Ortiz fighting in our promotion.”

Tachi Palace Fights had previously streamed on both GoFightLive.tv and MMAJunkie.com, but made the move to Sherdog.com after the February 18^th show.

“It really just came down to numbers. We really value our relationship with MMAJunkie.com and their staff. John Morgan, Dann Stupp, Gorgeous George, Goze and Tom have been a pleasure to work with and have been an iatrical part of our growth over the last year,” Luchau said.

“But we are very happy to be back with Sherdog as well. They have been part of mixed martial arts at the Palace since the beginning and I’m happy to be working with Jeff Sherwood and Greg Savage again.”

The stream will be live and free on Sherdog.com at 5:30 p.m. (PST) and will be blacked out to fans within 100 mile radius of the Palace unless there is a sellout.

“I expect we should have another sell out for our first outdoor show of the year,” Goodman said. “A majority of the fights on this card have some sort of title implications. I’d expect a few of the winners on May 6^th to be fighting for a title in the future.”

San Diego, Calif. lightweight Fabricio Camoes (11-5-1) makes his return to Lemoore after his TKO victory over Las Vegas, Nev.’s Steve Lopez (12-4) in February to face Tempe, Ariz.’s Efrain Escudero (15-2) in the co-main event. Like Camoes, Escudero is a UFC veteran and is riding a 2-fight win streak.

The lone title fight on the 13-bout card features Stockton, Calif. featherweight Isaac DeJesus (9-3) against Fresno, Calif.’s Russ Miura (9-1). The current champ, DeJesus, has lost two straight non-title affairs since winning the belt in February of 2010 with a TKO of Garden Grove, Calif.’s Nam Phan (16-8).

Two other feature fights include UFC veteran Gerald Harris and the World’s No. 2 ranked Flyweight Mamoru Yamaguchi in separate bouts.

The Tulsa, Okla. middleweight, Harris (17-4), has lost two straight bouts and the UFC vet is looking to bounce back against local veteran Coarsegold, Calif.’s Anthony Ruiz (25-15).

Japan’s Yamaguchi (25-5-3) brings his exciting style to the US for just the second time and will take on one of the nation’s most exciting flyweights in Albuquerque, N.M.’s John Dodson (11-5).

Arroyo Ready to Unleash “Vinsanity” on Nelson!

“I have never trained harder than I have for this fight. It’s going to be an exciting fight. That’s what I want.”   23-year-old Buffalo welterweight Vincent Arroyo (10-1, 7 KOs) is practically chomping at the bit to get at his next opponent.   The power-punching Arroyo will face 6′ 3″ welterweight up-and-comer Willie Nelson (16-0-1, 10 KOs) in an eight-round televised bout on Showtime’s fantastic ShoBox “The New Generation” Triple Header entitled “Rumble on the Rio” from the Laredo Energy Arena in Laredo, Texas.   “Training is going very well for me and I’m excited about this fight coming up because it’s a chance for me to show people what I’ve got,” says Arroyo in a tone of voice reflecting intensely focused determination. “I want to test my will and my boxing skills and this is a good fight to do it in. I want to see what he’s got. He better have a lot. They call me “Vinsanity” for a reason.”   Arroyo had been cruising up the welterweight ranks and scoring some impressive victories along the way before running into fellow prospect Michael Dallas Jr in September 2009. Claiming he wasn’t fully prepared for the fight, Arroyo put in a listless performance while losing a unanimous decision.   But then in his next fight, Arroyo brutalized a very promising fighter named Jeremy Bryan, stopping him in eight painful rounds. For the pre-Michael Dallas Arroyo, it was business as usual, but to those who had seen him in that fight, beating Bryan was a tremendous upset.   “I took what he threw at me and I just realized if this is the best he could do he was in trouble,” recounts Arroyo. “It was just a matter of time and me doing what I’m supposed to do. I learned how to dig deep in that fight and from now on, I’m not going to stop pushing.”   Arroyo says Nelson’s tremendous height isn’t going to matter when the two fight.   “Height doesn’t do anything. I’m a warrior. If I come to get you, height won’t save you. I know they say he’s the best young 147 pounder and stuff like that and I know he can switch stances. I heard he can crack a bit too. He’s very good fighting from the outside, but it doesn’t matter. He’s going to be in with Vincent Arroyo and that’s a big mistake.”   Arroyo says aside from his vaunted punching power, he has many other assets he can employ in the ring. “People have considered me a puncher since I was 12 and knocking kids out in the amateurs. I’m aggressive. I have many skills I can bring out. Pedraza Headlines in Second Fight!

The most highly anticipated professional debut in years in the boxing hotbed of Puerto Rico occurred last February when 2009 World Amateur Championships Lightweight Silver Medalist and former Olympian Jose Pedraza entered the paid ranks in impressive fashion.   Paired against countryman Felix Rivera, who went 68-5 as an amateur and was also making his debut, Pedraza ended matters at 1:25 of round one with a combination to the head and body.   The buzz about Pedraza and his potential for fistic stardom are already very loud. The 22-year-old received an impressive signing bonus to ink with his promotional trio of Gary Shaw Productions, Universal Promotions and DiBella Entertainment.   That is why in just his second pro fight, Pedraza will face Corbin Page (1-1) in the main event on March 29 installment of “Broadway Boxing” at the BB King Blues Club in New York City. It’s a great opportunity for me to show the world my talent. I can’t wait.   Let’s talk about your pro debut. Did it feel strange to lose the headgear?   No, it’s something that I have been preparing for all my life. To become a professional was my dream since childhood and it finally came.   You were matched fairly tough in your debut. You won impressively, but is that the plan: to match you tough all the way to the top?   In boxing, it is not good enough to win, you’ve got to impress and to win like I did in my debut was a great thing for me. My first opponent was strong, but I managed to do my work and win. I think that the quality of my opponents is always going to be high because of my amateur career. People think I’m a beast, but I actually am a normal man that goes to the gym everyday looking for way to provide for my family.   What are your greatest strengths as a fighter? I think my greatest strengths are my movement and experience. I move to a lot of different angles and try to look for different openings — and my experience because I don’t get careless in the ring.   Will you ever move out of Puerto Rico?   I don’t think so. This is my island and these are my people. I will stay here.   Is there anyone you fought in the amateurs, maybe even lost to, that you’d like to meet again as a pro?   Not really. Reid, Dilks, Ainscough and Fielding promise hometown glory tomorrow

The Prizefighter Super-Middleweights II show hits Liverpool Olympia live on Sky Sports 1 and HD1 from 8pm tomorrow night (March 23) and the four local fighters in the line-up have promised Mersey fight fans there will be a hometown winner.

Robin Reid, Carl Dilks, Joe Ainscough and Rocky Fielding welcomed their opponents to Merseyside at today’s weigh-in (March 22) but the quartet promised their opponents a rough ride on the night in front of a vocal home support.

“I’m really excited and knowing that I’m going to have great support in Olympia is just going to push me that extra bit,” said Ainscough, who faces Sheffield southpaw Wayne Reed in the second quarter final. “I just want to get in there now and soak it up – the four of us will have most of the support and we won’t let them down.”

Ainscough and Reed could both potentially face local rivals in the first semi-final, with Liverpool’s Fielding taking on Sheffield fighter Patrick J Maxwell in the opening bout of the night. Fielding was the final fighter to join the line-up last week and came in bang on the weight – something he says proves his preparation has been perfect despite the late notice.

“It’s been a whirlwind from not being involved at all to being in the line-up but I’m buzzing now,” said Fielding. “I’ve always been good at making weight, it’s never been a problem – I knew the target and I knew what to do to get there.”

The unbeaten 23 year-old has just three fights on his record but those around him know more than enough about Prizefighter to aid his shot at the £32,000 winner’s cheque. Prizefighter Super-Featherweights finalist Derry Matthews will be in his corner on the night and he has recently worked with both Martin Murray – who won the Middleweights event – and Tony Dodson, who would have fought in the final of the Light-Heavyweights II in January had bad cuts from his quarter-final and semi-final wins not prevented him from doing so.

“Having Derry in the corner is a real boost and along with what I’ve learnt from Martin and Tony, I’ve definitely got an inside track into what is needed tomorrow,” added Fielding.

The third quarter-final of the night pits three-time World champion Reid against unbeaten Welsh prospect Tobias Webb. Reid made his comeback to the ring against Jamie Ambler at the beginning of March, with his points win in Bolton his first fight since losing a British title fight to Carl Froch in November 2007. The 40 year-old insists he still has ambitions in the sport and also has the ingredients to get the better of the 22 year-old Webb and go on to lift the trophy.

“Three fights in one night is a new challenge for me and that’s what you should be in boxing to do, test yourself,” said Reid. “People forget that I had a great amateur career and when you add that to the experience I’ve got in the pro game, I’ve clearly got the lot to win this.”

The fourth quarter-final pits Dilks against Leicester fighter Jahmaine Smyle – and the hometown fighter is the bookmakers jolly to win the 17^th edition of Prizefighter, and he is only to aware of the fate of previous favourites. The 27 year-old hopes to buck the trend though and put the memories of his first round defeat to James DeGale in September firmly behind him in the process.

“The favourite never wins Prizefighter!” said Dilks. “Being the bookies pick is a bit of added pressure but I am well up for this, don’t worry about that. I know Prizefighter is a great springboard and after DeGale, it’s the right thing for me to do. The atmosphere is going to be electric so all of us will be looking to put on a show.”

Lara Wants to Leave an Impression Friday Night

To list all of Cuban southpaw Erislandy Lara’s amateur accomplishments would take several minutes. He’s been an elite fighter for many years. And although some amateur stars don’t translate well into professionals, Lara (15-0, 10 KOs) is currently on a four-fight first-round knockout streak against intermediate-level opposition.   Some in boxing are starting to cite Lara as a worthy challenger to fighters such as Miguel Cotto and Sergio Martinez — which is why in his 10-round main event this Friday, March 25, on ESPN2’s Friday Night Fights broadcast from The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, he must not only win, but continue to impress.   Lara will face Chicago’s Carlos Molina, a former NABO Champion widely regarded as having dealt Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. his first professional loss (except on the scorecards).   Through a translator, he spoke about his impending run at stardom and the pressures he faces.   What do you know about Carlos Molina?   I know he is a good boxer and a former world contender who was ranked in the top ten in the world.
