Connor In Confident Mood Ahead Of Goodjohn Showdown This Saturday

Sutton’s Danny ‘Cassius’ Connor is in confident mood ahead of this Saturday’s showdown with Tyler Goodjohn, at the Tony Simms (TBS Promotions) promoted event at the Prince Regent in Chigwell, Essex.

Connor will be looking to bring his excellent boxing skills in to play against Goodjohn on Saturday, however if needs be he’ll be just as happy to slug it out toe-to-toe, as proved in his last outing, back in January, when he was involved in an all action battle royale with Stevenage’s Terry Holmes.

From the start of the bout Connor used his superior boxing to keep the raging bull attacks of Holmes at bay. Connor showcased his boxing skills whilst Holmes seemed content to throw bomb after bomb whenever he got in range.

As the bout progressed some good toe-to-toe action ensued. Holmes slowed things down a bit,  instead of launching wild attacks he started picking his punches. Connor was boxing beautifully but the tide had turned firmly in favour of Holmes with his now more controlled approach.

The final round almost presented Holmes with the stoppage he had predicted, after landing a big right Holmes pounced on Connor letting rip with a flurry of big shots. Connor weaved and ducked to stay out of trouble but with his back to the rope didn’t  seem to have an escape route so let rip with a few of his own.

This was enough for Holmes to take to the back foot. Connor pushed forward and let rip with a huge salvo of his own. The crowd were on their feet as the action flowed back and forth until the final bell rang and Holmes was declared victor by a rather generous 40-36 points margin.

It was a fast and furious affair and Connor more than showed a good account of himself.   However Connor is not expecting the same kind of fight against  Goodjohn, who is more a boxer than brawler, on Saturday.

Following a sparring session, with Sam Standing at the Ultrachem TKO Boxing Gym in Canning Town, Connor spoke briefly on his opponent and Saturday’s fight, “I’m fighting a fella called Tyler Goodjohn, he’s 3-0 and brings a big following.

He’s a bit lairy, he’s confident he’s gonna do a number on me but he has more chance of getting me pregnant than he has beating me, it just aint gonna happen.

Training’s been going really well. Sparring’s been going double well. I’ve been sparring a few of Jimmy Tibbs’ boys like Billy Joe Saunders as well as some of our own boys like Sam Standing, Ricky Boylan, Georgie Jupp. Mo Hussein’s son has been up here doing a bit, he’s just signed a contract with Frank Warren.

We’ve all been up here training together and it’s gone double well. I’m already on the weight so everything’s come together at the right time. Just got to get in there Friday, do the business and show everyone what I’m all about.

There’s no way he’s gonna beat me, no way in this world.”

Erick Ochieng: Undaunted By Controversial Loss – Focuses On Title Shot In May

Last Friday night Stoke Newington’s Erick ‘The Eagle’ Ochieng suffered a highly contentious loss to Castleford’s Luke ‘Lionheart’ Robinson at the York Hall in Bethnal Green, London.

Ochieng versus Robinson was main support to the co-headlining title fights of Adil Anwar versus Nathan Graham (International Masters) and Peter McDonagh versus Darren Hamilton (Southern Area) at the excellent Hard Knocks Boxing Promotions ‘Shamrock Showdown’ event.

Right from the opening bell Robinson quickly closed down Ochieng, in order to neutralise Ochieng’s highly effective jab. Ochieng was savvy and went on the back foot to find some room to get his jab off.

Robinson kept coming forward, throwing some pretty wild shots, until eventually he had backed Ochieng onto the ropes. Robinson kept throwing wild off target shots at the ever ducking and weaving Ochieng, who in return responded with some highly effective stiff jabs to force Robinson back.

It was a close round, Robinson the more aggressive, but failing to hit the ever moving target, whilst Ochieng was more controlled and getting results by landing good solid jabs.

Round two was more of the same with Robinson pushing. Ochieng on the other hand was content to stay with his back to the ropes and pick off Robinson at will with stiff jabs and punishing one-twos to the body.

An easy round to call as Robinson barely landed a punch for all his wind milling whilst Ochieng, who barely threw a couple of dozen shots throughout the whole round, landed each effort solidly, much to the delight of this fans who in unison chanted ‘Eagle, Eagle, Eagle’ after each contact.

Both rounds three and four were more of the same, Robinson flies out of the trap but ‘The Eagle’ just stays calm and picks him off at will – Robinson pushes forward but barely lands a glove on the ever mobile Ochieng, yet gets caught himself by every precision counter.

The crowd jeer as referee Ken Curtis raises Robinson’s arm aloft declaring him victorious by a 39-38 points margin. the packed York Hall crowd jeer and boo the decision whilst Ochieng and his manager-coach Brian Lawrence look around confused as Robinson celebrates.

Shortly after the result was officially read out promoter Spencer Fearon announced that there will be a rematch at his next show, much to the delight of the assembled crowd.

On returning to training, at the Ultrachem TKO Boxing Gym in Canning Town, Ochieng was clearly undaunted with the controversial loss as he said, “I’m disappointed to have lost, but I thank God for the opportunity to fight. I’m going to become stronger from this.

It was supposed to be a six rounder, but it was reduced from a six rounder to a four rounder.

My plan for a six rounder was to break him down and then knock him out.

I rocked him a couple of times but didn’t have enough time to take him out. I lost by just one point.

As I say I am just glad to get the opportunity to fight.

I have terrific supporters, they’re awesome. I just want to thank them all for coming down.

You haven’t seen the best of the Eagle yet, the best is still to come.

I’ve got the Southern Area (title fight) coming up soon and will be back on winning ways then.”

As Ochieng had stated he will be fighting for the Southern Area Light Middleweight title in the near future. However, there is a high possibility that the proposed rematch with Luke Robinson may come first as Spencer Fearon has stated that his next York Hall show will be in May or June.

NEW YORK (March 22, 2011) – The Super Six World Boxing Classic Semifinals are set to begin. Andre Ward, Arthur Abraham, Carl Froch and Glen Johnson are all one victory from the tournament final en route to 168-pound supremacy. On Saturday, May 14, Ward will defend his World Boxing Association (WBA) Super Middleweight world title against European superstar Abraham to kick off the Semifinals of the groundbreaking tournament LIVE on SHOWTIME® at 10 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast) from The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.

The event is co-promoted by Goossen Tutor Promotions, Antonio Leonard Productions and Sauerland Event and sponsored by Corona. In the co-featured non-televised portion of the card at The Home Depot Center heavyweight world contender and popular Southern California slugger Cristobal Arreola will try to stay on track for another opportunity of a world championship when he takes on Nagy Aguilera of the Dominican Republic.

“The stage is set for the dramatic conclusion of the Super Six World Boxing Classic,” said Ken Hershman, Executive Vice President and General Manager of SHOWTIME Sports®. “We have seen some tremendous fights, scintillating action and surprising twists and turns. These four semifinalists have all survived the tournament’s rigorous road to this point but they are not done yet. They need two more outstanding performances if they want to truly be considered No. 1. I can’t wait for May 14.”

For Ward (23-0, 13 KOs), with his November victory over Sakio Bika and convincing wins over Mikkel Kessler and Allan Green in the Group Stage portion of the tournament, he enters the single elimination bout against Abraham as the tournament favorite. Ward, of Oakland, Calif., can advance to the tournament Final to face the winner of the upcoming Froch vs. Johnson Semifinal bout with a win over the former middleweight champ.

“I’m ready to get back in the ring and kick off the Semifinals against Arthur Abraham on May 14,” Ward said. “I’m just one win away from reaching the Finals and achieving what I set out to achieve when I entered this tournament: Super Six champion and the world’s best 168-pound boxer.”

Ward continued: “I’m also happy to return to The Home Depot Center. I fought there once before and I think it’s a great outdoor venue. Arthur should have a lot of fans there with the large Armenian contingency in Los Angeles, and I will have a lot of fans as well.”

”California fans are going to be treated with what I believe will not only be a very exciting night of fights at the championship level, but witnessing the next superstar in Andre Ward. He reminds me of Sugar Ray Leonard, tough as nails, classy, charismatic with matinee idol looks,” stated Dan Goossen of Goossen Tutor Promotions.

Abraham (32-2, 26 KOs), of Berlin, Germany by way of Armenia, entered the tournament as a heavy favorite alongside Kessler. But after emerging from Group Stage 1 as the points leader with a knockout win over Jermain Taylor, Abraham is now trying to bounce back from consecutive tournament losses to Andre Dirrell and Froch in Group Stages 2 and 3, respectively.

With a win over Ward on May 14, Abraham, who entered the tournament with an unblemished record, can once again become a world champion and the tournament favorite heading into the Finals.

“I have a lot of respect for Andre Ward,” Abraham said. “He has proven his class and he has defeated a lot of strong opponents. But once we meet in the ring, the past does not matter anymore. I had a very bad day against Carl Froch but I have put that behind me and learned from my mistakes. I am ready to bounce back. That is what being a true champion is all about – to come back from a loss and win the title again. I am looking forward to May 14. I will prove myself in the ring.”

Abraham, who has only fought in the U.S. twice in his career, isn’t concerned with fighting in California, Ward’s home state.

“There is a huge Armenian community in Los Angeles, and I will put on a spectacular fight for them,” said the Armenian-born Abraham. “I am very grateful to have their fantastic support and I can already promise them a very special evening. It will be good to have their backing. It will give me a huge boost.”

Added promoter Kalle Sauerland of Sauerland Event: “This is going to be a fantastic fight. We have a lot of respect for Andre Ward. He is a deserving champion but he will be dethroned by the comeback King! Arthur has learned from his mistakes in the Froch fight. At Team Sauerland, we certainly know one or two things about comebacks, especially when it comes down to making the necessary adjustments. Mikkel Kessler, the Viking Warrior, lost to Ward but in his next fight he defeated Carl Froch on points. May 14 will be the comeback of King Arthur! He will surprise a lot of people – and he will stun Andre Ward!”

Tickets for the May 14 Semifinals at The Home Depot Center will be go on sale on Wednesday, March 30, and will be available for as low as $25, with VIP floor seats priced at $200. Other tickets in the 8,000-seat outdoor stadium at The Home Depot Center are available at $50 and $100. The Semifinals of the Super Six World Boxing Classic will continue just one week later on Saturday, May 21, when Froch (27-1, 20 KOs) defends his World Boxing Council (WBC) Super Middleweight title against Johnson (51-14-2, 35 KOs) at a venue to be named in the near future.
