New trainer Mike ‘Red’ Skownowski On Target working with Matt “Sharp Shooter” Remillard

MANCHESTER, Conn. (March 22, 2011) – New Jersey-based trainer Mike “Red” Skownowski reports that training unbeaten NABF and NABO featherweight champion Matt “Sharp Shooter” Remillard for his March 26 showdown against unbeaten IBF No. 1 contender“Mikey” Garcia, despite being together a little more than month, seems like they’ve been working together for a year.

 

Remillard-Garcia is the 12-round co-feature on Top Rank’s “Featherweight Fury,” airing live on HBO After Dark from Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

The 24-year-old Remillard (23-0, 14 KOs) has been at training camp with his new trainer, “Mike Red,” Skownowski, in Passaic, New Jersey. The WBA #3, WBO #4 and WBC #5 rated Remillard puts his NABF and NABO title belts on the line against USBA titlist Garcia (24-0, 20 KOs).

 

The newly Top Ranked-signed boxer is in the fight of his young life, one that offers title implications for the Remillard-Garcia winner against IBF Featherweight Champion Yuriorkis Gamboa, or his challenger Jorge Solis if he registers an upset in the 12-round main event “Featherweight Fury.”

 

“Everybody in the gym immediately liked Matt,” Skownowski said. “We have a lot of young kids who have gravitated towards him. Right now, four of them are sitting around between workouts talking boxing with Matt. It seems like we’ve been working together for a year, not 4-5 weeks. In 3 ½ weeks he had already sparred 84 rounds, working double sessions, and he’s a real gym rat. He came to me in shape but not in good boxing shape. Every day he was sparring 10 rounds. I don’t want to leave it in the gym, so the other day I gave him light stuff. He got upset because he’s use to going 100 miles an hour.”

 

Skownowski also works with former world champion Kendall Holt, as well as prospects such as Glen Tapia, Jorge Diaz, Victor Valenzuela, Jeremy Byrant, Jose Perrault, and Wanzell Ellison. In the past he worked with the late Arturo Gatti and Tomas Adamek.

 

“Matt has a very tough fight against Garcia but I think he’s going to shock a lot of people,” ‘Mike Red’ noted. “I didn’t think Matt was a big a puncher as he is. His strength and power are much better. I thought he was more of a finesse fighter but he can bang, too. We’ve worked hard on his footwork and his jab has improved.”

 

Remillard has developed into a dangerous body puncher, stopping several opponents with an attack similar to that of another New Englander, “Irish” Micky Ward, who has often talked to Matt about his left hook to the liver. “Yeah,” Skownowski added, “when I tell Matt I want a Micky Ward, he knows what I mean – tap to the head and then drill the left hook to the body.”

Barthelemy Takes Advantage(s)

Havana native Rances Barthelemy (10-0, 8 KOs) enjoys many advantages over his opponents and even over his compatriots.   Unlike others in his generation of Cuban professionals, 24-year-old Barthelemy has already been in the United States for two years and is fully acclimated to life here. Standing 5′ 11″, Barthelemy towers over most of his opponents and, because he is blessed with a wealth of natural punching power, he hits a lot harder than most of them as well. Add in that he comes from a highly successful fighting family (brother Yan Barthelemy was a 2004 Olympic Gold medalist) and that as an amateur he competed in over 200 fights and won a Cuban junior national championship and you have all the makings of a future star.   Barthelemy is scheduled to make his next ring appearance on the undercard of the March 25 ESPN2 Friday Night Fights broadcast from The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. Through a translator, Barthelemy gave his thoughts on his promising young career. How did training go for this fight? Any injuries?   As a fighter moving up, I am always in the gym preparing to fight. I did nothing special for this fight, but worked hard and was injury free. I had a minor head cold, but worked it out without medication.   Was your career harmed by not being able to compete in the Olympics?(Because he defected to the United States prior to the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, Barthelemy was unable to qualify to compete because he is not a United States citizen)   Of course my career would be different had I competed in the Olympics. My team mate, Luis Franco, a 2004 Olympian for Cuba, has been able to advance more rapidly because of his Olympic qualifications.   Do you ever miss Cuba?   I miss Cuba very much. It is the land of my birth and of my family, the place where I was raised. It is also a very beautiful country. I am fortunate to have my two brothers living in Miami near to me.   Have you ever felt as though you were fighting in your brother Yan’s shadow because of his tremendous amateur success?  If yes, do you still feel that way?   I saw how little reward was given to my brother, Yan, despite his tremendous amateur achievements, and it soured me on the Cuban boxing system. For survival purposes, I could do better in Cuba without boxing and I was tempted at times to give it up. So I never really felt in competition with Yan. Now we each have our own professional careers and I am the undefeated boxer. We are best friends but definitely not competitors for each other.   Is your professional career advancing the way you want it to?   I trust my management and promotional team without question. I am 10-0 in under two years and look forward to better competition as I move up. I will be fighting my first 8 round bout on March 25 and hopefully it will lead to a televised fight and eventually a main event in the very near future.   How long until you feel you’ll be ready to fight for a world title?   As an 8 or 10 round fighter I expect to fight tougher opponents with each successive bout. This being the case, I hope to challenge for a world title within the next 18 months.   What are your greatest strengths as a fighter?   I am the complete package. I am exceptionally tall for a 130 lb. boxer, which gives me a height and reach advantage over almost any opponent in my weight class. I am a good athlete and bring outstanding condition, endurance, speed and power with me into each contest. I can box well from the outside and bang inside as the fight may dictate.   They say sometimes Cuban fighters come to America and learn to love the good life. Do you live your life the right way to become a champion?   I have seen the downside of life in America as it impacts on Cuban fighters. There are many temptations, especially here in Miami with its large Cuban population. There is virtually no transition to be made when moving from Cuba to Miami, other than adapting to the US economic system. I came to the United States for economic opportunity. To achieve my financial goals I must become a world champion. I have dedicated myself to this and live a Spartan and athlete’s lifestyle. I don’t use tobacco or recreational drugs. I almost never touch alcohol. I train every day. SALINAS, PUERTO RICO – WBO NABO Super Flyweight Champion César “Junito” Seda (20-0, 15 KOs) looked comfortable this morning at the Olympic Village in Salinas Puerto Rico, coming in at 128 1/4 pounds for his first pre-fight weigh-in for his world title fight against Omar Narvaez (33-0-2, 19 KOs) on April 15 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.   Seda had been required to weigh no more than 132.5 pounds (15% above 115).   “I feel fine and comfortable making weight,” said Seda, Jr., “We are focused on this fight with Narvaez and ready for whatever he brings. We know that Omar is a first-class fighter and for that reason we will be very well prepared”.   Seda will have in his hands full in this fight. Narvaez was an outstanding amateur boxer and boasts a record 16 successful title defenses, surpassing the record of the great Argentine middleweight champion Carlos Monzon.   “This is the second week of training at the Olympic Village and we are seeing results. ‘Junito’ is in tremendous condition and losing weight and eating well,” said trainer and manager Cesar Seda Sr.   The NABO champion also took the opportunity to delight the audience with his boxing ability and do two rounds of sparring.   This fight is presented by Universal Promotions and Gary Shaw Productions and will be broadcast on pay per view system at a price of $29.95.   ###

Integrated Sports Media Presents GSP’s early career fights

HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 21, 2011) – Integrated Sports Media (ISM), the undisputed distribution champion of mixed martial arts and boxing fights in North America, announced today that it will present a one-hour special featuring Georges “Rush” St. Pierre’s six non-UFC fights, including his first five and rarely seen 2002 debut, prior to him developing into the Pound-for-Pound King of MMA.

“George St. Pierre: Rush To The Top” will be exclusively distributed in the United States by ISM, premiering in April for viewing on both cable and satellite pay-per-view on the following dates: DirecTV and DISH Network (April 1), Avail-TVN (Apr. 11) and iN DEMAND (Apr. 12), as well as via Video On Demand, for only $9.95. Check listings for replays through the entire month of April and into May.

“We’re thrilled and privileged to bring this unique footage of St. Pierre, the No. 1 ranked welterweight in the world and reigning UFC champion in the 170-pound division, to MMA fans in the United States,” ISM president Doug Jacobs said. “This exciting six-fight package is where it all started for one of the greatest MMA fighters of all-time.”

St. Pierre, who sports an amazing 21-2-0 career record (8 KOs, 5 submissions), started learning Kyokushin karate from his father at the age of seven in order to defend himself from a school bully. He later studied Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), wrestling and boxing. Today, he holds a third-degree black belt in Kyokushin, as well as black belts in BJJ and Gaidojutsu.

The 20008 & 2009 Canadian Athlete of the Year had his first amateur MMA match at the age of 16. St. Pierre made his MMA pro debut January 25, 2002, defeating previously unbeaten (4-0) Ivan Menjivar, in Montreal, by first-round technical knockout (punches) in UCC 7: Bad Boyz.

Five months later in Gatineau, Canada, Georges captured the UCC (Canadian) Welterweight Championship, forcing Justin Bruckmann (4-1) to submit (arm-bar) in the opening round in UCC 10: Battle for the Belts 2002.His first and only UCC title defense came October 11, 2002 in Montreal, when St. Pierre stopped Travis Galbraith (5-1) in the first round at UCC11: The Next Level.

MMA’s future superstar next took on Thomas Denny, who was riding a three-fight win streak January 25, 2003 into UCC12: Adrenaline in Montreal. It took Georges two rounds to win for the first time as Denny was defeated by technical knockout on cuts. Denny was a US citizen so the fight wasn’t for St. Pierre’s UCC title belt.

In his fifth pro match and last non-UFC fight, “Rush” took on UFC veteran Pete Spratt, who was coming off of a victory by submission inUFC 42 against Robbie Lawler, who went on to capture the Elite XC middleweight title. St. Pierre locked-in a rear naked choke against Spratt (12-6), who tapped-out at 3:40 of the first round in their November 29, 2003 fight in Victoriaville, Canada on the TKO 14: Road Warriors card.

St. Pierre made his UFC debut two months later en route to becoming arguably the greatest all-around fighter in MMA history. Three fights after making his UFC debut, GSP bounced back from his first pro MMA loss (Matt Hughes, 1^st round submission – arm-bar) in his last non-UFC fight at TKO 19: Rage, in which he defeated Dave Strasser by first-round submission (Kimura) in Montreal.

His most notable victims reads like a list of the true MMA elite, including B.J. Penn (twice), Matt Serra, Matt Hughes, Dan Hardy, John Fitch, Thiago Alves, and Josh Koscheck. Georges is 8-2 in UFC title fights and he is scheduled to next defend his title belt April 30 headlining UFC129 against Jake Shields in Toronto.
