London Boxers Show Their Support For 2012 Olympics As Tickets Go On Sale Today

Posted on | March 16, 2011 | No Comments

As tickets for London 2012 Olympics go on sale for the first time today, boxers and coaches at the Ultrachem TKO Boxing Gym, in Canning Town, London showed their support for the Games, which are to take place just a short distance away in Stratford, via video interviews to WinkBall.com correspondents.

WinkBall.com correspondents Stephen Foorunsho and Zulfi Rahman visited the famous East London gym with the intention to undertake a video interview with female boxer Marianne ‘Golden Girl’ Marston, as part of their  Olympic 2012 coverage, in collaboration with The Telegraph. However the collective enthusiasm and support of the Olympics shown by those at the gym lead to additional interviews being undertaken.

Marianne, who is co-sponsored by WinkBall.com and laser eye surgery specialists Optimax, was clearly pleased that the Olympics are to be held in London as she said, “I think it’s a great thing for the country and for London. I think it’s a great thing for the kids in the city, hopefully there will be a lot more interest for sport and sporting events for everybody.”

Marianne then went on to talk about her excitement that Women’s Boxing will be showcased at the London 2012 Olympics, as well as the various aspects of preparing for competition.

Amongst those also interviewed were some exceptional former amateurs, now rising stars in the pro-ranks, such as 2008 Olympian Billy Joe Saunders who said “I think it’s going to be good for the country, especially for our athletes who’ve got home advantage and they’ll get the crowd behind them up which’ll spur them on”

Another former top amateur to be interviewed was London based Dutch cruiserweight Mitchell Balker, who won the New York Golden Gloves as an amateur.

One of the biggest names on the domestic boxing scene Kevin Mitchell, who undertook a joint interview with his brother Vinny, said “I think it’s a good thing, It’s a massive thing for England, huge for London that it’s held here.”

One of the Ultrachem TKO Boxing Gym young prospects, Lightweight ‘Pretty’ Ricky Boylan also gave an indepth interview as did London based Iraqi Heavyweight Ali Adams.

It’s wasn’t just the young boxers but also some former boxers turned coaches that were also quick to show their support for the 2012 London Olympics by giving interviews to the WinkBall correspondents.

Amongst these were former Commonwealth  Light Welterweight Champion Mo Hussein, former Amateur star, now coach for the Sierra Leone Olympic squad, Tony Cesay, star boxer turned coach Mark Tibbs and World class coach Johnny Eames.

BARKER IS BACK: DARREN FACES SPADA IN EUROPEAN TITLE SHOT

Posted on | March 16, 2011 | No Comments

Londoner faces Italian in hometown show on April 30

‘Dazzling’ Darren Barker returns to the ring on April 30 to face Domenico ‘Volcano’ Spada for the vacant European Middleweight title at London Olympia.

The unbeaten British and Commonwealth champion will face the Italian in Kensington live on Sky Sports. Barker and Spada are ranked six and seven in the WBC rankings and their showdown for the European belt could open the door for a World title shot in the summer against the winner of Sebastian Zbik and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr’s bout on June 4 in Los Angeles.

Barker vacated the European title in September after injury forced him to pull out of a showdown with Matthew Macklin in Birmingham and the pair were due to meet at a rearranged date. But Macklin withdrew and vacated the belt to travel to America for his since postponed fight with Ronald ‘Winky’ Wright, Barker now has the chance to regain his title against Spada, who is the number one contender for the belt.

The 2002 Commonwealth Gold medallist won the European title for the first time with a unanimous decision win over Affif Belghecham at Alexandra Palace, London last April – the 22nd win of his professional career. Barker claimed the vacant Commonwealth belt in November 2007 against Ben Crampton at York Hall, Bethnal Green, and on the fourth defence of his title he picked up the British crown with a seventh round stoppage of Danny Butler in Brentwood, Essex in November 2009.

“This is a huge fight in the career of Darren Barker and I know that he will be ready for whatever Domenico Spada brings on the April 30,” said Barker’s promoter Eddie Hearn. “Darren has all the tools to become a World Champion and with number six and seven in the WBC rankings meeting here, the winner will put himself right in line for a shot at the winner of the Zbik vs. Chavez fight in June. I’m excited for Darren and expect an electric atmosphere at Olympia from his faithful army of fans.”

30 year-old Spada takes a 32-3 record into the fight with Barker, with two of those defeats coming in WBC Interim title fights in Germany against Zbik to unanimous decisions.

Tickets for Darren Barker v Domenico Spada are available now from Matchroom Sport priced £35 unreserved, £60 ringside, £80 inner ringside and £120 VIP – to buy call Matchroom Sport on 01277 359900.
