Back in Action: Williams’ Quest for Greatness Continues   Tucked away on the undercard of the Friday, March 25 “Fight Night at the Cosmopolitan” ESPN2 Friday Night Fights broadcast from The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas is the return of Texas lightweight Hylon Williams Jr., after over a year of inactivity.   One of the most highly touted prospects in boxing, 20-year-old Williams (12-0, 3 KOs) will make his return to the ring against Detroit’s James Lester in a non-televised six-rounder.   “It feels good to be coming back to Vegas to fight. It feels good to be coming back to fight, period,” admits Williams, shortly after a training session at Johnny Tocco’s gym in Las Vegas.   Having signed on with promoter Luis DeCubas of Blue Wave Group and relocated to Las Vegas, Williams says he is eager to regain the momentum he built by scoring 12 victories in 20 months before being sidelined by what he labels “managerial problems.”   Blessed with amazing hand speed and incredible balance, Williams was a highly decorated amateur who went 145-20 while winning a slew of tournaments and titles that few can rival.   “I plan on going from a great amateur to a legend in the pros,” he continues. “I don’t just want to be a good professional; I want to go down in history with the Sugar Ray Leonards and Floyd Mayweathers.”   In preparation for his return, Williams has been sparring with notable champions and top contenders such as Celestino Caballero, Robert Guerrero, Zab Judah and Jorge Teron.   He has also acquired the services of a cornerman who can relate to the transition from amateur standout to hopeful professional prospect. His new co-trainer is former Cuban amateur star and professional prospect Ramon Garbey (along with his father Hylon Sr.) “Ramon is blending my American style with some new Cuban tricks. He also teaches me to slow down and sit on my punchers more instead of being such a mover.”   Not much for pre-fight plans, Williams says he’ll let the canvas paint itself when he enters the ring that night. “It depends on whatever magic trick comes to me when I’m in there. There will always be something crowd-pleading about what I do in the ring; I can guarantee you that. I’m just going to go in there and box and if I see him hurt, I’m going in for the kill. It’s going to be a helluva night of boxing. Oliveira-Adriel Mar. 25 for Interim WBC Latino title in Sao Paulo

SAO PAULO, Brazil (Mar. 16, 2011) – Unbeaten Michael “The Brazilian Rocky” Oliveira continues his mission to popularize boxing in his native Brazil, when he fight at home again March 25, headlining the “International Boxing Challenge” pro-am event at Mauro Pinheiro Gymnasium in Sao Paulo.

 

The 20-year-old Oliveira (13-0, 11 KOs), now rated No. 10 by the USBA, takes on undefeated Argentinean prospect Abel “El Principito” Nicolas Adriel (10-0-2, 2 KOs) for the Interim World Boxing Council Latino Super Middleweight Championship in the 10 round main event.

 

“International Boxing Challenge,” presented by MO Productions, will air live on TV Globo Network, SporTV cable, GloboEsporte and TV Globo International. A 4-round pro bout between a pair of Sao Paulo middleweights, pro-debuting Douglas Ataibe and Valdevan “Baiano” Pereira (5-4, 4 KOs), is on the card as well as a pair of amateur matches featuring members of the Brazilian National Olympic Boxing Team.

 

Oliveira, the repeat winner of the Brazilian International Press Award’s Athlete of the Year (2009 and 2010), was born in Sao Paulo but he moved two weeks after birth with his family to Miami. In his Brazilian debut last November in Sao Paulo, Oliveira stopped rugged Junior Ramos (10-5) in the third round.

 

“The excitement is the same here but I am more relaxed this time,” Oliveira reported from training camp at Eco Fitness Gym in Sao Paulo, where he’s being handled by trainer Paco Garcia. “I’ve been here training since February 25. My Brazilian fans will get a real show from ‘The Brazilian Rocky’”

 

Oliveira has the personal support of Hall of Famer and Brazilian boxing icon, Eder “Golden Bantam” Jofre, in terms of reestablishing boxing back to Jofre’s days, in addition to filling the void left when superstar Acelino “Popo” Freitas retired in 2007.

 

“It’s a very hard task but I’m working on in,” Oliveira commented on his challenge to convert Brazilian sports fans into his. “MO Productions signed a two-year contract with TV Globo and I should be fighting at least three times a year in Brazil. The plan is for me to fight this June in Rio de Janeiro and September in Brasilia. Being the Globo TV ‘house fighter’ brings more responsibilities for me, but it’s also good to know that they are behind me. I love Brazil and Brazilian people. After all, I was born here, and I’m very proud to be embraced by Brazilian boxing fans.”

 

Brazilians and Argentineans are traditional arch-rivals in sports and the 21-year-old Adriel, who fights out of Pigue, Buenos Aires, Argentina, is a natural foe for Oliveira. The consummate boxer fought 10 times last year and twice in 2011, the most recent a first-round knockout of Ceferino Juan Jose Coronel last Friday in Buenos Aires.

 

“I saw some of his fights on You Tube,” Oliveira added. “I will put a lot of pressure on him from round one to see what he’s made of.”

Former World champ backs his charge for Liverpool glory after DeGale sparring

 

Former World Middleweight champion Chris Pyatt believes Jahmaine Smyle has the perfect style to claim Prizefighter trophy at Liverpool Olympia on March 23.

 

Smyle lines up in the 17^th edition of Matchroom Sport’s eight-man, one-night tournaments in Merseyside live on Sky Sports and his trainer Pyatt says his fighter is a danger-man in the draw, which will be revealed on Ringside on Thursday night from 6pm on Sky Sports 1.

 

Pyatt won the WBO Middleweight belt in May 1993 with unanimous decision against Sumbu Kalambay in Leicester and defended the title twice before Steve Collins wrestled it from him in May 1994.

Smyle hands over experience to the likes of Liverpool pair Robin Reid and Carl Dilks who line-up in their home town but Pyatt says his fighter is in great condition a week to go to, having sparred with James DeGale last week.

 

“He’s done some really good training so far and done some great sparring all over the place,” said Pyatt. “He sparred with DeGale last week down in London and did seven good rounds with him – James was impressed with Jahmaine which says a lot. We’re right on track for next Wednesday and we can’t wait to get stuck in.”

 

Smyle, 24, has just five fights to his name, with three wins, a draw and a defeat at the hands of fellow Prizefighter Wayne Reed. But with an excellent amateur background behind him – 15 wins from 16 bouts – Pyatt says Smyle has no fear and just the right mix of technique and courage needed to excel in Prizefighter.

 

“It’s only over three rounds and Jahmaine is a strong kid so it suits him to get into a fight,” said Pyatt. “Anyone who wants to win Prizefighter has to be prepared to get into a fight; otherwise you are not going to get through. It’s a fantastic competition and it’s not been a long time since Jahmaine was an amateur so that’s to his advantage.

 

“He’s not been boxing that long so he needs experience of bigger nights like this. But the boy can box and he needs to make sure he fights his kind of fight, not stand off and let his opponents dictate as you have to boss three-rounders from the start.”

 

Smyle is only too aware of the advantage it is to have someone of Pyatt’s calibre in his corner. The 47 year-old won 47 of his 52 professional fights having won Commonwealth Gold at Welterweight for England at the 1982 Games in Brisbane and Smyle says he has benefited from Pyatt’s experience as her prepares for the biggest night of his career.

 

“Chris knows what it is like to be a fighter – he’s been right at the top and it’s a real bonus having an ex-boxer as a coach,” said Smyle. “He’s won World, European, Commonwealth and British titles so he knows what it takes to get to the top and he also understands what a boxer is going through in the build up to the fight so it’s a real advantage having him in my corner.”

NEW YORK (March 15, 2011) — With their International Boxing Federation (IBF) Super Middleweight clash just days away, boxing superstar and unbeaten champ Lucian Bute and European titleholder Brian Magee participated in a media teleconference call Tuesday to discuss their upcoming fight for Bute’s belt on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING Saturday, March 19 live on SHOWTIME® at 10 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast) from Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada.

Bute, who signed a multi-fight agreement with SHOWTIME in November 2010, is one of the most talented pound-for-pound and popular fighters of this era. He has won all but one of his title defenses by knockout, including four consecutive victories inside the distance.

The immensely popular 31-year-old Romanian-born fighter lives in Montreal, where he routinely draws sellout crowds. The natural southpaw, who has supreme counter-punching ability, speed and power, is coming off a ninth-round knockout of Jesse Brinkley Oct. 15 in Montreal.

The 35-year-old Magee has not lost since 2006 and is also riding an impressive streak of four consecutive knockouts. Magee has won six in a row and nine of 10 since his loss to Super Six semifinalist Carl Froch in ‘06.

Magee resides near Belfast, Northern Ireland. His manager, Pat Magee, said Tuesday there would be a wild celebration if his fighter were to upset Bute. “There is actually a St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Montreal the day after the fight on Sunday,” said Pat Magee, no relation to Brian. “Our plan after we beat Bute is to have Brian lead the parade.”

Here’s what both fighters had to say Tuesday:

LUCIAN BUTE:
“I feel like Brian Magee was the best opponent out there for me at this time and I’m taking this fight very seriously.

“I’m really concentrated on Brian Magee. I really haven’t had time to think of anyone else. I’m just focused on Saturday. After then, I will worry about whichever opponent is going to come after my performance on Saturday.

“I don’t really have too much time to worry about my next opponents. Once I sign a contract, I concentrate on my opponent and prepare two months in advance. I plan to win every minute of every round. If the knockout comes, it comes. But that’s not what I’m trying to do. I’m trying to win fights and so far I’ve been successful and that’s what I will do again on Saturday night.

“Once I defend my title with Brian Magee then definitely I would like to fight Mikkel Kessler. Why not? Him or anyone else in the Super Six is who I’m going to fight next.

“In all my fights I have a strategy and I talk it over with my trainer. We study tapes of my opponents and I see openings and I see mistakes that they make. That’s how I work on my strategy. During the fight I let my arms go and I let my boxing do my work in the ring. And it comes naturally, my knockouts. I don’t look for them but they just happen because I’m well prepared for my fights.

“I really don’t have it as a goal in my career to make the (pound-for-pound) rankings. My objective is to be the best I can be and to be recognized as the pound-for-pound king soon based on my performances and my wins in the ring.

“I have followed the Super Six from the beginning. I’m a big fan of boxing and especially since it is my weight class I have watched every fight. I study all the fights. I study all the guys who have been in there. I can’t wait for the Super Six to finish, so I can fight the guys who are available and out there.

“I’ve been blessed with having a good following in Montreal and they are a big part of my success. They give me a lot of energy when I fight and it’s important to have all the fans in my corner when I fight at the Bell Centre. But I’m a professional boxer and so far I haven’t had the opportunity to fight anywhere else. I hope to get that chance and would like to fight in the United States. I would like to fight in Madison Square Garden or Las Vegas. I’m not just stuck in Montreal. I will fight anywhere.”

Who do you think will win the Super Six Tournament?
“I do follow the Super Six and I know the matchups. All four fighters are very good and I have a lot of respect for all four. I find it tough for (Arthur) Abraham to have a solution for (Andre) Ward. In the other fight, I want to congratulate Glen Johnson for making it to the semifinals. He’s a great boxer and a great person and congratulations for doing it at his age. But in my opinion the final will be Carl Froch vs. Andre Ward. I really can’t say who the winner will be but I think it will be an exciting fight.”

Have you been frustrated having to wait to fight those guys?
“I was not frustrated at all the last couple of months. I knew it was a matter of time and it’s a great opportunity to fight the guys in the Super Six at some point.”

“I don’t think having Mikkel Kessler ringside is going to distract me. I think having a guy like him there just gives me more confidence to have a good performance. Once I win this fight, I will see what opportunities are out there.”

BRIAN MAGEE:
“I’ve had to work very hard to get here and do a lot of things to get this shot. I feel like I deserve it and I’m so happy to be here. It’s great to be fighting the best in the division on such a massive stage. This is where you want to be as a boxer. This is a dream fight.

“I always seem to be the underdog but I’ve always come through. These Super Six fighters are the best fighters in the world. This division has the hardest fighters of any division in boxing.

“I’m going to have to box. I’m going to have to fight. When you fight a guy like Bute you have to be ready for anything. Any time you fight for a world title it’s going to be a hard fight. Lucian’s on such a high, signing a big contract with SHOWTIME he’ll be out to prove himself.”

How do you feel about facing a fellow southpaw?
“It’s an advantage to me as much as it is to him and it’s a disadvantage to me as much as it is to him. I don’t like fighting a southpaw but there’s nothing I can do about it and I try not to think about it. The guy I fought for the European Championship (Mads Larsen) was a southpaw. You just have to get in there and stick with what you do best.

“At this stage of my career it’s great to get a shot at a world title. It’s been a long way up the ladder to this point but as I said before I think I’m deserving of this shot. Opportunities don’t come around like this too often.

“You always try to get guys in here to spar with who are going to be like the guy you are fighting. It’s been hard to find a southpaw like Lucian but you do the best you can. I’ve had some southpaw sparring.

“I’m willing to take the fight whichever way it goes. I’m not looking for the knockout. The fight is here in Montreal and that doesn’t faze me. It’s a great city and the people are great and I’m happy to be here.

“I’ve always had belief in myself. Having seen what Carl Froch has been able to do in his career and having had such a close fight with him, I feel like I’m very deserving of this fight.

“Not many people get this opportunity. This is a chance of a lifetime. Hopefully I’ll have this memory for the rest of my life.”

CORK, Ireland (March 15, 2011) – WBA Interim World Super Bantamweight Champion Guillermo “The Jackal” Rigondeaux, arguably the greatest amateur boxer of all-time, arrived March 7 in Ireland to complete his extensive training for his first title defense this Saturday night (Mar. 19) in Dublin against Irish favorite, former European title holder Willie “Big Bang” Casey.

 

The Guillermo-Casey title fight features a pair of unbeaten boxers headlining a show promoted by Top Rank, Nowhere 2 Hyde Promotions and Dolphil Promotions. RTE will air the fight live in Ireland and it’ll be available to watch online at www.rte.ie/live starting at 6 PM/ET, 3 PM/PT in the United States.

 

Rigondeaux (7-0, 5 KOs), a southpaw now fighting out of Miami, was a 2-time Olympic Gold Medalist, as well as a 7-time national champion who captured a pair of World Championship titles during his amazing 243-4 amateur career.

 

After breaking training camp in Houston (TX), The Ring No.6-rated super bantamweight Rigondeaux traveled to Ireland for his third visit having experienced an Irish heart-warming welcome in January, when he held a public workout before hundreds of mightily impressed boxing fans at the luxurious Montenotte Hotel in Cork.

 

Unlike other world champions who would have a half-dozen or so supporting team members for a fight in a foreign country, especially one half-way around the world, Guillermo’s fans have purchased more than 1,200 tickets for the nearly sold-out show at The City West Convention Centre in Dublin.

 

Rigondeaux’ somewhat surprising popularity in the Emerald Isle can be traced to his amateur days and Guillermo’s winning 2001 gold-medal performance at the World Championships in Belfast.

 

“Rigo” defected from Cuba and made his pro debut May 22, 2009, won the NABA super bantamweight title in his third action as a pro and last November in only his seventh fight, he won a unanimous 12-round decision against Ricardo Cordoba (37-2-2) to become the WBA Interim 122-pound divisional champion.

 

Casey (11-0, 7 KOs) stopped Paul Hyland in the fourth-round of their November 6 fight in Willie’s hometown of Limerick (Ireland), capturing the vacant European super bantamweight crown. The 29-year-old Casey, however, relinquished that strap in order to challenge Rigondeaux, who will have Ronnie Shields as his chief second for his third straight fight.

 

Irishman Gary Hyde has been Rigondeaux’ manager since he signed “The Jackal” in Cuba to an exclusive management agreement in early 2007. “Rigondeaux defending his world title in Ireland is a dream come true for me,” Hyde said from his office in Cork. “We are all very confident that ‘Rigo’ will leave here March 20^th with his title and continue his quest to unify the 122-pound division.

 

“Casey is a true warrior and I’m sure that he will turn in the fight of his life to try and dethrone the greatest amateur boxer of all-time, ‘Rigo,’ who became world champion in only his seventh professional bout. But he hasn’t fought anybody close to having Guillermo’s brilliance and he’ll realize that right after the opening bell. In my lifetime, I have great memories of Irish fighters in world title fights – some won and others didn’t – but Casey will not have the luck of Irish this fight. He will be thoroughly out-classed by this modern-day phenomenon, Guillermo Rigondeaux.”

 

Hyde also has two other unbeaten fighters in action on the Rigondeaux-Casey card, Manchester, England welterweight prospect Mark Heffron (4-0, 3 KOs), and Georgian junior welterweight Levan Ghvarmichava (2-0, 2 KOs).

 

The highly-touted Heffron makes his first Irish appearance, in his first scheduled 6-round bout, against David Pulido (6-9, 2 KOs) having fought all of his pro fights, thus far, across Europe in The Netherlands, Poland, Hungry and at home on the undercard David Haye-Audley Harrison WBA Heavyweight Championship show.

 

Hyde first took special notice of 2007 and 2009 World Championship fighter Ghvamichava in 2009 when Levan defeated 2-time World Amateur Championship winner and 2008 Olympic bronze medalist, Rosniel Iglesias Sotolongo, of Cuba. Ghvamichava, who is trained by Paul and Sean McCullagh in Belfast, faces veteran Mihaita Mutu (27-16-2, 10 KOs) in a 4-round bout. Levan has already dazzled fans with his immense potential, starting with his pro debut this past January in Dublin, in which he defeated Konstantins Sakara by a second-round knockout. In his most recent fight last week, Levan took on 72-fight veteran Laszlo “The Rock” Komjathi, who went the distance with current WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan, former world titlist Andriy Kotelnik, and world title challenger Wily Blain. Ghvarmichava nearly put Komjathi to sleep in the opening round and finished-off his rubbery legged opponent in the second.

(March 15, 2011) – Olympic Gold Medalist and former Ten-Time World Champion in six weight divisions who turned USO veteran, Oscar de la Hoyatouched down stateside today following a whirlwind seven-day USO/Armed Forces Entertainment tour to Kuwait and Iraq.  Accompanied by up-and-coming fightersAdrien Broner, Danny Jacobs and Seth Mitchell, De La Hoya led the group to the Middle East on March 8, where they went on to extend their thanks to troops and visit eight military bases.  Among some of the installations visited were Camp Arifjan,COB Basra, Camp Victory, Camp Liberty, JSS Loyalty and JSS Justice.   Having lifted the spirits of thousands of servicemen and servicewomen, the group held a series of boxing clinics as well as signed hundreds of autographs and delivered an infinite number of smiles.  Most telling of the group’s popularity among troops was seen at Camp Victory, where more than 600 troops turned out to attend a USO boxing demonstration featuring the fighters.  Despite the tour coming to a close, its impact on De La Hoya and the others were felt once they returned home.
