El Maachi Battles South American Champ Lopez In Dagenham This Saturday

International Masters Light Middleweight Champion Yassine El Maachi is set for the toughest fight of his career to date, when he comes face to face with Argentinian and South American Light Middleweight Champion Ulises David Lopez, at the Steve Goodwin Promoted quadruple headlined ‘Essex Eruption’ super show at Goresbrook Leisure Centre in Dagenham, Essex this coming Saturday.

El Maachi, who successfully defended his International Masters crown against European #4 ranked Jimmy Colas back in December, has been frantically searching for a top fifty World ranked opponent for Saturday’s show and finally gets his wish as Lopez is ranked one spot higher, at 48, than the Finsbury Park, London based Moroccan.

The fight with El Maachi comes just one week after Lopez, whose ring moniker is ‘Cloroformo’ due to his penchant for sending his opponents to sleep – by knockout not boredom that is, retained his South American Light Middleweight crown.

The reason Lopez was able to take the fight with El Maachi so soon after  a major title fight was that the bout was cut short after his opponent, former Argentinian and South American Light Welterweight Champion Carlos Wilfredo Vilches, was disqualified in the third round due to persistent illegal ‘below the belt’ blows.

On receiving the news that he will be facing Lopez on Saturday a jubilant El Maachi said, “I said I only want to fight someone ranked top fifty. Lopez is top fifty World ranked. It’s what I have always said I wanted and I got what I wanted.

It may be short notice but Lopez is fight ready, he trained for twelve rounds for his fight last week, he went three. He’s going to be a tough challenge. I’m ready for that challenge. I’m ready to fight anyone in the top fifty.

Like I told you last week, you’re gonna see a proper knockout. I said whoever going to fight me is going to get knocked out. Lopez is going to get knocked out.”

Joe replaces Dodson in hometown show two years after stabbing

Joe Ainscough will return to big-time boxing in the Prizefighter Super-Middleweights II tournament in his hometown of Liverpool on March 23, just two years after a stabbing appeared to end his career.

The Kirkdale Kid suffered horrific injuries after being stabbed in an incident in Liverpool in April 2009 and was told by doctors that he would never box again.

Ainscough excelled as an amateur, winning the ABAs in 1999, and had six wins from his first nine fights as a professional but his future was thrown into doubt when he intervened in a scuffle outside a pub in Walton. As he broke up a fight, Ainscough was stabbed in his lower body from behind twice and suffered a punctured bowel and bladder.

Two years later, he returned to the ring in Manchester on Saturday night (March 12) with a first round stoppage of Iliya Shakura and steps up from being a reserve in Prizefighter to take the place of Adrian Dodson in the 17^th edition of Matchroom Sport’s eight-man, one night tournaments live on Sky Sports.

“When I heard that Prizefighter was going to be in Liverpool I just knew I had to be in it,” said Ainscough. “It’s all come about at the right time and I’m made up about it.

“I knew in the hospital after I had the operation to save my life that I was going to fight again – I knew that within a couple of days and it was one of the first things on my mind, that I needed to get myself back in the gym and training to get back fighting again. It’s been tough but I’ve made it back now and I cannot wait to feel that buzz again.”

The 31 year-old toyed with the idea of becoming a coach immediately after the attack but soon decided that he still had a future in the ring. Ainscough says the physical and mental scars from the ordeal have long since healed and he’s now focussed on getting his career back on track.

“It’s nearly two years ago now and as for talking about it, it’s not something that I really think about it anymore or dwell on it – it’s in the past and I’ve moved on,” said Ainscough.

“I’ve got a really busy lifestyle outside boxing, with my own ceramic tiling business that is doing really well and I’ve got two kids that I love spending my free time with. I’ve dedicated two-thirds of my life to boxing and I’ve been committed to getting ready for Prizefighter but after being out for so long I’m not going to make statements like ‘I want a big title shot’ because I’m just thrilled to even be here fighting really.”

Ainscough joins fellow Liverpudlians Robin Reid, Tony Quigley and Carl Dilks in the line-up and they will be seeded in the draw which will be made later this week. Merseyside’s boxing ‘Fab Four’ will face Sheffield pair Wayne Reed and Patrick J Maxwell, unbeaten Welshman Tobias Webb and Leicester’s Jahmaine Smyle in the quarter-finals.

Dodson was due to fight in a warm-up bout on Saturday night, but spoke to the promoters beforehand to say that he did not feel he would be able to get into a physical condition to do himself or the competition justice.

“Adrian is a seasoned professional and a gentleman who has been honest with us and himself,” said Matchroom Sport’s managing director Eddie Hearn. “He said he didn’t want to disappoint the fans in Liverpool and those watching at home so he decided to step aside. Adrian’s loss is Joe’s gain and it’s a great story for him to come back into the spotlight in his hometown after recovering from a life-threatening attack.”

Bute’s Title Defense Kicks Off Multi-Fight Agreement With SHOWTIME;

NEW YORK (March 14, 2011) – Unbeaten International Boxing Federation (IBF) Super Middleweight Champion Lucian Bute (27-0, 22 KOs) will make his eagerly anticipated first start since signing a multi-fight agreement with SHOWTIME Sports when he makes the seventh defense of his 168-pound crown against former European titleholder Brian Magee (34-3-1, 24 KOs), of Belfast, Ireland, live onSHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING on Saturday, March 19 on SHOWTIME® at 10 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast) fromBell Centre in Montreal, Canada.  The telecast will begin with the rebroadcast of the March 12 action-packed SHOWTIME PPV® fight between World Boxing Association (WBA) Super Welterweight champion Miguel Cotto and Ricardo Mayorga.

Bute, who signed with SHOWTIME in November 2010, is one of the most talented pound-for-pound and popular fighters of this era. He has won all but one of his title defenses by knockout, including four consecutive victories inside the distance.

The immensely popular 31-year-old Romanian-born fighter lives in Montreal, where he routinely draws a sellout crowd.   The 6-foot, 2 ½-inch natural lefthander, who has supreme counter-punching ability, speed and power, is coming off a ninth-round knockout of Jesse Brinkley on Oct. 15 in Montreal.

Bute won the IBF title from Alejandro Berrio in 2007 and made successful defenses against William Joppy, Librado Andrade twice,Fulgencio Zuniga and Edison Miranda.  In his first appearance on SHOWTIME, Bute retained the IBF belt with a lopsided 12-round decision over Andrade on Oct. 24, 2008, in one of the most talked about final rounds of the last decade.

Bute, who is training in Miami for this southpaw vs. southpaw showdown, is not taking the Irishman lightly.  Magee fought Super Six World Boxing Classic Semifinalist Carl Froch – a possible opponent for Bute in the near future – tough for 10 rounds before losing via knockout in the 11^th in May 2006.

“Magee is an experienced boxer,” Bute said.  “He has a good right hook, he’s aggressive, he will never quit and he can punch. I can’t underestimate him and I have to be well-prepared. I respect him as a fighter, but I fully expect to rain on his St. Patrick’s Day parade”.

“I’m ready for a long and tough fight. It was not an easy fight for Carl Froch, and I don’t expect it to be for me either.”

While his immediate concentration is on Magee, Bute knows that, if triumphant, he will set himself up for several possible matchups on SHOWTIME, including what would likely be a highly anticipated showdown with the eventual winner of the Super Six World Boxing Classic.

“Now I’m focused fully on Brian Magee,” Bute said.  “But after March 19, I can set my sights on getting ready for the winner of the Super Six tournament.”

The 35-year-old Magee has not lost since 2006 and is also riding an impressive streak of four consecutive knockouts.  Magee has won six in a row and nine of 10 since his loss to Froch.

Ranked No. 8 by the IBF, the 6-foot southpaw feels Bute is not looking past him.

“I don’t think (Bute) will take me for granted,” Magee said. “I think he will prepare for me like a champion. Without a doubt he’s the best in the division right now. He’s a hard fighter to have a plan against because he’s good at everything. He’s going to go back and go forward. He’s a very worthy world champion.

“He’s a lot trickier on his feet than Froch. They are similar in size but I think Lucian is better at speed and movement and boxing ability. I try to be a good boxer-fighter. I admire boxers who get in the ring and use their skill. I try to box and I think of myself as very determined. I always give 110 percent.”
