Larry Pryor Pulls Upset of Night with Victory over Mark “TNT” Tucker
FAIRFAX, VA – Jimmy Lange scored a 10-round unanimous decision over Jimmy “The Fighting School Teacher” Holmes last night at the Patriot Center, utilizing an effective jab especially in the middle-through-late rounds to help earn his 35th career victory. Lange, headlining his 12th show at the George Mason University venue, improved to 35-4-2, 24 KOs, while Holmes dropped to 19-2, 10 KOs.
Former three-time world champion William Joppy boxed his way to his 40th career win with a technically sound, ten-round decision over Cory “Black Ice” Cummings in a rematch serving as the Co-Main Event. Immediately after the decision was read, the Rockville, MD-native now fighting out of Woodbridge, VA, announced to the appreciative crowd that he was hanging up his gloves for good after reaching the milestone win.
In the surprise bout of the evening, Larry “Hitman” Pryor handed Mark “TNT” Tucker his first pro loss with a dominating performance spread over eight rounds. A Washington, D.C. native now living in Frederick, MD, Pryor quickly established his presence, controlling the action en route to pulling off the upset over Tucker who never seemingly got on track.
Lange and Holmes fought a back-and-forth slugfest through the early part of their bout with each attempting to establish control in the ring. The two traded plenty of punches with Lange taking the lead in the 6th using a string of strong combinations and a consistent jab that penetrated Holmes’ defense.
Lange continued to press in the 7th, only to have Holmes respond and maintain his poise in front of the partisan crowd and Holmes’ first fight outside of the Midwest. Late in the round both fighters had some blood coming from cuts above the left eyes. The 9th and 10th rounds belonged to Lange as he had Holmes on the ropes numerous times, although was unable to capitalize and finish his opponent. The rhythm of the 10th round was disrupted twice as repairs to loose tape on Holmes’ glove caused extended delays, preventing Lange from attempting his traditional, last-minute knockout win.
“I thought the quality of my jabs tonight was very good, I just did not have enough quantity,” commented Lange.
“I was a little disappointed in the fight tonight because I thought we could get Jimmy (Holmes) out of there a little earlier,” remarked manager/father Johnny Lange at the post-fight press conference. “But other fighters really get up to fight Jimmy and come into the Patriot Center with nothing to lose.”
“I thought I got in some good work tonight. He is a very long fighter and I usually fighter shorter guys so I had to make some adjustments,” said Lange who plans to fight out of town once or twice before returning to Fairfax later this fall. “I did not see any tape on him so I did not know what to expect until the bell rung. I played it by ear a little bit early on.”
George “Wartime” Rivera got off to a fast start against Shakir Ashanti eventually earning a unanimous decision. Rivera cut Ashanti under the left eye in the third round but Ashanti rebounded as both fighters picked up the pace, finishing strongly in the last three rounds.
In a showdown between Maryland heavyweights, Abodurin “Bo” Akinyanju rocked Ron “Heavy Duty” Gamble in the opening round forcing a standing count. Akinyanju had Gamble, a former University of Connecticut football player, in trouble again early in the 2nd round before Gamble began to get his legs. Gamble, in just his second pro fight, battled back in the last two rounds but fell short losing in a split decision.
In his Patriot Center debut, Scott “Cujo” Sigmon took control of the fight early from John “The Baptist” Terry, and continued at a relentless pace, before finishing Terry for good via a 4th round TKO at 1:16.
In the bloodiest bout of the night Tony “Mo Better” Jeter won a hard-fought unanimous decision over a game Mike McFail with all three judges giving the nod to the Stevensville, MD middleweight by scores of 60-53. (Due to a scorecard mix up the initial decision was announced in favor of McFail). Both fighters took turns delivering punishment, but it was Jeter who ultimately came out on top, flooring McFail several times and opening up numerous facial cuts in the bruising affair.
Todd “White Lighting” Wilson raised his record to 10-0 in a sloppy affair which saw Dean “Pitbull” White get disqualified for excessive holding and hitting after the bell. After a close first round, White was penalized for a late hit at the end of the second round. Much to the dismay of both corners and the crowd, referee Billy Johnson called an end the contest at the conclusion of the 3rd round citing White for hitting after the bell again.
Ring Notes: Among those in attendance were former world champions with D.C. ties including Paul “The Punisher” Williams, DeMarcus “Chop Chop” Corley and Keith Holmes… Jimmy Lange Boxing officials announced a limited time 2-for-1 ticket offer for its next Patriot Center show set for September 10. The special deal, valid at the Patriot Center Box Office only, expires Monday, March 14… … A strong military contingent consisting of personnel from nearby Fort Myers, Fort Belvoir, and Fort Meade, as well as Wounded Warriors from Walter Reed Army Medical Center, were given a standing ovation by the crowd.

LAS VEGAS (March 13, 2011) – After months of an incident-filled, antagonistic promotion, Miguel Cotto and Ricardo Mayorga delivered an equally entertaining fight on SHOWTIME PPV® ending with a TKO victory for Cotto at 0:53 in the twelfth round. Pawel Wolak upset Yuri Foreman with a pressure-filled fight that ended in technical knockout at the end of six after Foreman refused to answer the bell for the seventh round. Baltimore Ravens safety Tommy Zbikowski scored a TKO over Richard Bryant at 1:45 of round one and Miguel Vazquez retained his International Boxing Federation (IBF) lightweight title over Leonardo Zappavigna via unanimous decision with scores of 117-111 and 118-110 two times.
Cotto (36-2, 29 KOs), from Caguas, Puerto Rico, summed it up perfectly: “The whole fight was great but the finish was amazing.” In a fight that both camps predicted would end in less than four rounds, Cotto and Mayorga gave the 7,247 in attendance at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and boxing fans watching at home on pay-per-view more than their money’s worth by pushing the action-packed fight into the twelfth round.
Mayorga (29-8-1, 23 KOs), from Managua, Nicaragua, carried his pre-fight bravado into the ring with taunts and sarcastic smiles. In the third round, “El Matador” ran into a neutral corner and attempted to goad Cotto into a corner-of-the-ring brawl. Unlike a bull that might jump at a matador’s invitation, the completely unfazed Cotto kept his cool and boxed the wild puncher. Cotto’s devastating jab landed repeatedly throughout the bout, causing major swelling over Mayorga’s left eye. Cotto’s shots were shorter, sharper and harder than Mayorga’s, as predicted by trainer Emanuel Steward.
Though never truly rocking the champion 154-pounder. Mayorga caused problems for Cotto by fighting from odd angles and landing looping punches. Leading into the final round, Mayorga knew he needed a knockout and, as he did at so many other points in the fight, went for broke.
Unfortunately for the Nicaraguan fighter, what broke – or at the very least dislocated – was his left thumb. Amidst a flurry of punches, Cotto’s and Mayorga’s hands clashed just before Cotto landed his signature left hook square on Mayorga’s cheek and the combined pain forced Mayorga to his knee while gripping at his hand. Mayorga stood up to continue but realized he couldn’t close his left hand and decided to end the fight.
“I tried to finish the final round but the pain in my hand was too much,” said Mayorga. “I don’t care about my thumb; I didn’t want it to end like that.”
The TKO victory for Cotto served as the first title defense of his World Boxing Association (WBA) super welterweight championship since winning it in Yankee Stadium over Foreman last summer. He has now won 16 of his 18 world championship bouts.
After the fight, the humble Pride of Puerto Rico complemented his opponent, “[Mayorga] has pretty strong hands and he could beat anyone.”
Mayorga showed a rare bit of respect in return, “As a man, I have to admit when I do well and when I do not. Give Cotto credit,” said Mayorga. “He hits hard and is a great champion.”
The scintillating clash marked the end of the first co-promotion between legends Bob Arum and Don King in five years and proved to be another classic.
Foreman’s string of tough luck continued on Saturday from Las Vegas. After his first career loss to Cotto, ACL surgery and the death of his longtime manager, Foreman (28-2, 8 KOs) of Brooklyn, N.Y., suffered a lopsided loss that saw him quit on the stool after round six. Wolak (29-1, 19 KOs) set the tone early with heavy pressure and stalked Foreman from the opening bell. Foreman had few answers and made no adjustments throughout the super welterweight bout allowing Wolak to land countless combinations and clubbing right hands.
“I didn’t feel like myself tonight,” said Foreman. “From the long layoff, I didn’t feel sharp. I felt mushy.”
After six rounds, Foreman’s corner had seen enough of the one-sided scrap and called the fight. Wolak jumped up in elation and credited the dominant performance to his work ethic. “If you ain’t the fastest guy, you ain’t the slickest guy, you [have to] work like a madman,” said the 29-year-old emerging junior middleweight from New Jersey.
Zbikowski (2-0, 2 KO), of Chicago, Ill., didn’t waste any time racking up his second career win after a long hiatus from the ring. The former Notre Dame standout, with the uncertainty of a 2011 NFL season looming, returned to his first love of boxing to score a first-round TKO over Bryant in a heavyweight bout scheduled for four rounds. At the fight’s outset, the fighters got tied up and Zbikowski utilized some football skill by throwing Bryant (1-3, 1 KO), London, Ky., to the canvas. After the action resumed, Zbikowski landed a left hook to the body that knocked the wind out of Bryant, causing him to fall to the ground and the fight to come an end via technical knockout at 1:45 in the first round.
In the evening’s first fight, Vazquez (28-3-2, 12 KOs), of Guadalajara, México, successfully defended his IBF lightweight title for the second time. Against an outmatched Zappavigna (25-1, 17 KOs), of Sydney, Australia, Vazquez used his long jab to capitalize on his height advantage.
Zappavigna, in his first title fight, pressured Vazquez early but could not match the skills of the champion. By the third round, Vazquez began to tenderize the skin above Zappavigna’s eyes which led to multiple cuts by the middle of the fight. Movement also served as a problem for Zappavigna as Vazquez’ fast feet kept the Aussie from turning the fight into a brawl.
In the end, the judges ruled the bout a unanimous decision in favor of Vazquez with Patricia Morse-Jarman scoring the fight 117-111and both Glenn Trowbridge and Burt Clements scoring the bout 118-110.
The Cotto-Mayorga fight will be rebroadcast on Saturday, March 19 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on SHOWTIME before Lucian Bute defends his IBF super middleweight belt against Brian Magee.

MASHANTUCKET, CT (March 12, 2011) – The 2010 Fighter of the Year, world middleweight champion Sergio “Maraville” Martinez, destroyed previously undefeated Sergiy “Razor” Dzinziruk en route to an impressive win by eighth-round technical knockout to capture the World Boxing Council (“WBC”) Diamond Belt and retain his Ring Magazine belt, live on HBO World Championship Boxing at MGM Grand Theater at Foxwoods.
Martinez (47-2-2, 25 KOs) outclassed Dzinziruk (37-1, 23 KOs) from start to finish, using his superior hand and foot speed, as well as his power against the reigning World Boxing Organization (“WBO”) junior middleweight champion. Martinez lived up to his nickname (“Maravilla” means “Marvelous” in English), dropping Dzinziruk in the fourth, fifth and three times in the final round
The “Celtic War” was just that and more as two exciting middleweights, Ireland’s Andy Lee (25-1, 19 KOs) and Scotland’s Craig McEwan, turned in an early Fight of the Year candidate. A tactical match-up of southpaws quickly turned into a spirited bout with both fighters doing serious damage. McEwan was leading on all three judges’ scorecards after eight rounds (77-75 twice and 78-74, but the fight dramatically changed when Lee unleashed a terrific right-left combination that sent McEwan to the canvas with less than 30 seconds left in the ninth. Going into the final round, the fight was dead even on two cards with McEwan leading on the third, 86-84. Lee came out for the final round and finished the show, pounding the game McEwan into submission as referee Steve Smoger jumped in to end the fight 56-seconds into the 10th as McEwan was going down.
“Diamond Elite: Martinez vs. Dzinziruk” was presented by DiBella Entertainment in association with Gary Shaw Productions and Banner Promotions. “Celtic War: Lee vs. McEwan” was presented by DiBella Entertainment in association with Golden Boy Promotions.
Hot prospect Javier Fortuna (14-0, 11 KOs) kept his undefeated record intact, knocked out upset specialist Derrick Wilson in the eighth round to capture the vacant WBC Youth featherweight title. Fortuna, a southpaw, decked Wilson in the third round and twice in the eighth, the last from a powerful, straight left that landed square on Wilson’s chin.

Artie Pellulo, co-promoter of Dzinziruk: “We have the best junior middleweight in the world; Lou has the best middleweight in the world and one of the best, if not the best fighter in the world. Dzinziruk got up and knew he was fighting the best in the world. The better man won tonight; he fought the best middleweight in the world.”
Andy Lee: “Overall, I wasn’t happy with my performance. I hurt him early in the fight and I think that worked against me. I loaded up too much. I got into that habit and it was tough to get out. In the middle rounds I thought I was losing the fight. It was a big opportunity so I said to myself if I’m going to lose he’s going to have to kill me.”
“Basically I was flat-footed until I switched it up. Eventually I caught him at the end. I was fortunate but I deserved it. I don’t know what round it was but something inside me said I was going to take it.”
“He boxed very good. It was hard; we’re friends. I respected him before the fight and more now.”
“Sergio has great speed. He’d be a tough challenge for me.”
“I won the ninth, 10-8, but knew I needed a big finish and not leave it to the judges. One, two – he was on the ground. It wasn’t my best performance but it was a great victory. It was a hard fought fight. I showed courage and heart. I will get better.”

Andre Berto vs. Victor Ortiz WBC Welterweight Championship April 16 at MGM Grand at Foxwoods

NEW YORK, NY (Mar. 12, 2011) – Boxing is back at Foxwoods.
DiBella Entertainment announced today that the World Boxing Council (“WBC”) Welterweight title fight between undefeated, defending champion Andre Berto and challenger “Vicious” Victor Ortiz will be take place April 16 in MGM Grand Theater at Foxwoods in Mashantucket, Connecticut, the site of tonight’s middleweight title showdown between Sergio Martinez and Sergiy Dzinziruk.
Berto vs. Ortiz is presented by DiBella Entertainment, in association with Golden Boy Promotions. The bout will be televised live on HBO World Championship Boxing. Tickets are priced at $350, $200, $125, and $65 and will go on sale Wednesday, March 16 through the MGM Grand at Foxwoods box office. Tickets can be purchased online at www.mgmatfoxwoods.com, by calling the MGM Grand at Foxwoods at1-866-646-0609, or in person at the MGM Grand at Foxwoods box office.
“I am so happy to be coming back to one of the premiere fight venues on the east coast,” said Lou DiBella, President of DiBella Entertainment, the promoter of the show. “Berto vs. Ortiz is as compelling of a match as could be made in the welterweight division. I will see to it that the undercard is packed with some of the biggest names in boxing from New England and the rest of the world. April 16 will be another great night for boxing at the MGM Grand at Foxwoods.”
Berto (27-0, 21 KOs), a 2004 Haiti Olympian fighting out of Miami, captured the WBC welterweight belt in 2008 by stopping Miguel Angel Rodriguez in the seventh round. The lightning-quick Berto has made five successful title defenses, in order, against world champions Steve Forbes (DEC12), Luis Collazo (DEC12), Juan Urango (DEC12), and Carlos Quintana (TKO8), as well as veteran Freddy Hernandez (TKO1) last November.
Former NABO/USBA title holder Ortiz (28-2-2, 22 KOs), fighting out of Oxnard (CA), is a crafty southpaw who has won four of his last fight fights with one draw. His most notable victories have been against world champions Vivian Harris (KO3), Nate Campbell (DEC10) and Carlos Maussa (KO1).
