Boxing writer Thomas Hauser guest speaker at Ring 8 meeting

Tuesday night in Long Island City

NEW YORK, NY (Mar. 11, 2011) – Noted boxing author and columnist Thomas Hauser will be the special guest speaker this coming Tuesday night (Mar. 15, starting at 7 PM/ET) for RING 8’s monthly meeting at the historic Waterfront Crabhouse in Long Island City.

 

Hauser is one of the most foremost boxing writers in the world. He has written numerous books and countless columns about the “sweet science” during the past 20-plus years. In 1991, his biography about “The Greatest” – “Muhammad Ali: His Life and Times” – was named the William Hill Sports Book of the Year.

 

Thomas’ debut book in 1978 – The Execution of Charles Horman: An American Sacrifice” – was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize.

 

“Thomas is one of the most prolific writers in boxing,” RING 8 spokesperson Tony Mazzarella said. “We’re grateful to him taking the time to be our guest speaker. His insight into boxing, especially behind the scenes, is unparallel today. RING 8 is gaining momentum with each meeting as we attract more attendees and gain members. Our goal is to continue growing each month as we help boxers, active and inactive alike.”

Formed in 1954 by an ex-prizefighter, Jack Grebelsky, RING 8 became the eighth subsidiary of what was then known as the National Veteran Boxers Association — hence, RING “8” — and today the organization’s motto still remains: Boxers Helping Boxers.

RING 8 is dedicated to lending a helping hand to those in the boxing community who are less fortunate and may require assistance in terms of paying their rent, medical expenses, or whatever justifiable need.

“HDNET FIGHTS: SHARK FIGHTS 14” DEBUTS LIVE THIS FRIDAY ON HDNET

Horwich vs. Villefort and Damm vs. LaRosa Headline Event – Friday at 10:00 p.m. ET

 

DALLAS (March 10, 2011) HDNet, “Your Home for MMA” presents more LIVE events than any other network, and this Friday is no exception as “Shark Fights” makes its debut on the network presenting a solid card from top to bottom.

 

In the main event of the evening middleweight contender Danillo Villefort (12-3) meets UFC veteran and former IFL Middleweight Champion Matt Horwich (26-17-1). Villefort is riding a three fight winning streak with two (T)KOs during that stretch. Horwich is coming off a victory over Jake Rosholt.

 

Two of the top ranked women fighters in the world take center stage in the co-main event. The bout between Tara LaRosa (19-2) and Carina Damm (15-5) has literally been years in the making. The rivalry dates back to their time in Bodog Fights three years ago and the bad blood has continued ever since. Damm believes she was disrespected by LaRosa in the past and she is anxious for the chance to finally settle their differences in the cage.

 

Lucas Lopes (19-11) vs. Mike Bronzouliz (10-2), Alex Cisne (5-1) vs. Eric Davila (18-10), and Sean Shakour (3-0) vs. Joseph Sandoval (4-0) rounds out the main card.

APRIL 9 “ACTION HEROES” BOXING CAMP NOTES

Part 1 – Welcome to Camp

Mexico City, MEX (March 10) – The countdown to one of 2011’s most exciting nights of boxing has begun and the stars of the April 9 “Action Heroes” main event Erik “El Terrible” Morales and Marcos “El Chino” Maidana are deep in training.  Each week camp notes will be distributed to update media and fans on training camp happenings leading up to fight night at MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nev. which will be televised live on HBO Pay-Per-View®.

ERIK “EL TERRIBLE” MORALES – RIGHT AT HOME

Camp Location:Centro Ceremonial Otomí in Toluca Estado, Mexico

It’s back to the familiar for Erik “El Terrible” Morales, who is training at theCentro Ceremonial Otomí in Toluca Estado, the site he where trained for many of his most memorable fights including his legendary trilogies against Barrera and Pacquiao.  Morales ended his two-year retirement 11-months ago and has scored three consecutive wins.  Now, he is preparing for one of the biggest tests of his 18-year career, 12 rounds against boxing’s “Master of Mayhem,” Marcos Maidana.

 

“Everything in the gym has been great,” said Morales.  “I am preparing for a battle. I am doing everything according to Maidana’s skill level.”

 

Training over 3,000 meters above sea level over an hour away from the hustle and bustle of Mexico City has its advantages, as Morales is able to concentrate on getting in championship fighting shape away from the distractions of everyday life.  However, during his down time he catches up on his emails, reading books and playing dominos with members of his team.

 

Morales’ team includes his father, Jose”Olivaritos” Morales, who has been in his son’s corner his entire career as well as other returning members of his camp Fernando Fernandez and Tiburcio Garcia, who help Morales with mitt work in the gym.

 

“I am confident in my preparation for this fight,” Morales continued.  “I am looking forward to establishing an unbeatable plan and a great strategy to get the victory I know I can get on April 9.”

 

MARCOS “EL CHINO” MAIDANA – THE SIGHTS AND HEIGHTS OF MEXICO CITY

Camp Locations: Mexico City, Mexico (untilMarch 15), Las Vegas, Nev. (March 16 to April 8)

 

In preparing to face one of Mexico’s greatest boxing legends, Marcos “El Chino” Maidana has immersed himself in Mexican culture, society and atmosphere.  He is not only training in Mexico City for the first time in his career spaning 31 professional fights, but has also teamed with veteran trainer Rudy Perez, who knows a thing or two about defeating Erik Morales.  Perez successfully trained Marco Antonio Barrera to beat Morales in two of their three epic battles; Morales vs. Barrera II and III taking place on June 22, 2002 and November 27, 2004 respectively.

“I am not training in Mexico to spite Morales in any way,” said Maidana.  “I feel comfortable with the Mexican people.  I feel accepted by them and if I knock Morales out like I know I can, it is my hope that the Mexican fans will adopt me as their own.  I have been told many times that I have a Mexican fighting style and I hope to develop that more as I train in Mexico.”

 

In addition to surrounding himself with all-things Mexican, Maidana is taking advantage of the altitude in the capital city (2,200 meters above sea level).  He rises early (5:00 a.m.) and starts the day off with intense roadwork as he adapts to the high altitude.  He then returns to his apartment to eat breakfast and rest.  In the afternoon he heads to either the Boxeo de Gala gym or Pino Suárez gym for sparring, strength training and to work on his technique.

 

Maidana, who has trained in Las Vegas for several of his recent fights, will depart his new-found Mexican home and head to the familiarity of the desert on March 15 as his strength and conditioning coach, Cruz “Pensa” García, believes that five weeks is enough time for Maidana to spend training at high altitude.

 

“Working out in Mexico has been a great experience so far,” said Maidana.  “But a combination of the altitude in Mexico City and the familiarity of Las Vegas is what I need to get the result I want in the ring on April 9.”

“Action Heroes” featuring Morales vs. Maidana in a 12-round junior welterweight bout and Guerrero vs. Katsidis in a 12-round lightweight battle is presented by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Erik Morales’ Box Latino and Universum Box Promotions and sponsored by Cerveza Tecate, AT&T, DeWalt Tools and Tres Generaciones. Guerrero vs. Katsidis is presented in association with Sampson Boxing.   The bouts will be produced and distributed live on HBO Pay-Per-View beginning at 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT.

Rising Star ‘Saint’ George Jupp Added To Dagenham 19th March Super Show

Rising Belvedere Featherweight  star  ‘Saint’ George Jupp is set for his first outing of the year at the Steve Goodwin promoted quadruple headline ‘Essex Eruption’ event at the Goresbrook Leisure Centre in Dagenham on Saturday 15th March 2011.

George, whose professional record is a perfect three wins out of three outings, is proving to be one of the most exciting new prospects to emerge from Johnny Eames’ Ultrachem TKO Boxing Gym in Canning Town in recent times, as the man himself makes clear, having recently stated. “George is potentially the best boy we’ve got in the gym at the moment, with a view to how far he can go.

Anything can happen in boxing, but if he carries on the way he is at least British Champion without a shadow of doubt.”

As if to prove the point, Johnny Eames was happy for George to take an early rematch, in December, with tough Mansfield based Latvian Pavels Senkovs.

Back in September George gave Senkovs a boxing master class to secure a clear 40-36 points victory.

This time around though Senkovs had revenge on his mind, big time. Right from the opening bell Senkovs went straight on the attack, George used his brain and stayed out of a slugging match, instead responding with solid jabs and accurate left-rights to keep the Latvian at bay.

George frustrated the ever forward pushing Senkovs with his superior boxing skills round after round. Half way through the final round, just as Senkovs mounted yet another forceful attack, George countered with a powerful left-right combination to the head, which stopped Senkovs in his tracks and opened a deep cut over his left eye. Within seconds referee Jeff Hines spotted the blood gushing from the wound and jumped in and stopped the fight with just over a minute of the bout remaining to present George with the first stoppage win of his fledgling career.

Earlier today, following sparring with three of Graham Earl’s Irish fighters over for training camp in preparation for his April 2nd Belfast show, George spoke about his upcoming fight as well as the Jupp-Senkovs II battle, “Just over a week to go now, I can’t wait. I’ve been training hard and yeah can’t wait to fight now.

I enjoyed my last fight, I got him out of there. He’s a really strong character but I stuck with my boxing to try and keep him long. I caught him with a few flush one-twos and cut his eye. It was a good stoppage that, it’s good to have a stoppage on the card as well.

I’m hoping to out as much as I can, keep on boxing and as long as I’m winning then I’ll be happy. Anything that Johnny (manager and co-trainer Johnny Eames) wants me to do then I’m ready for. Yeah, keep winning.”

‘Saint’ George Jupp, against a yet to be named opponent, will feature on the Steve Goodwin promoted ‘Essex Eruption’ quadruple headlined super show at Goresbrook Leisure Centre in Dagenham, Essex on Saturday 19th March 2011.

Co-headlining the ‘Essex Eruption’ event are fellow Ultrachem TKO Gym mates Leon ‘Solid’ Williams against David Vicena and ‘Phat’ Pat McAleese versus Fran Gonzalez as well as Romford Cruiserweight Tony ‘The Conqueror’ Conquest and Yassine ‘The Showman’ El Maachi, who will both be against yet to be named opponents

The undercard includes a whole host of local talent including two more of Georgie’s TKO team mates, Daniel ‘Hurricane’ Herdman versus Kevin McCauley and ‘Pretty’ Ricky Boylan faces Kristian Laight.

Michael ‘The Zambezi Hitman’ Norgrove will be looking to extend his unbeaten record to five when he faces Czech Republic’s Jan Balog.

Another fighter who will be looking to increase his uneaten record is Biggleswade’s Jamie Boness.

Middleweight Kris Agyei-Dua and Danny Brown will be making their second outing in a Month, after both securing wins on their debuts at York Hall on February 20th.

Further fights are expected to be announced shortly to bring the ‘Essex Eruption’ card to fourteen bouts.
