“Make or Break” Fight for Casamayor

Having suffered two losses in his last three fights, albeit to top-flight opposition, 39-year-old former two-time world champion Joel Casamayor (37-5-1, 22 KOs) admits that every fight from here out is potentially career ending.   Casamayor will face once-beaten Mexican Manuel Leyva this Friday, March 11 at theTheatre for the Performing Arts at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, in a fight he knows he must win to stay relevant in the super lightweight division.   As charismatic and likeable outside the ring as he is merciless and mean inside it, Casamayor sat down for an interview before beginning one of his final workouts.   You’ve lost two out of your last three fights, even though they were both against top fighters, would another loss be the end of the line for you?   This is a ‘make it or break it’ fight for me, no question about it. I had Robert Guererro out in the tenth round of my last fight and if it had been a 12 rounder, I would have knocked him out, but no question, this is make or break. I’m 39 years old.   Why have you only had one fight per year for the last two years?   I was looking for a major fight and they kept falling through. I had fights with Morales, Barrera and even Amir Khan fall through. Eventually, I had to take the Guererro fight, even though I love him and his family.   What is left for you to achieve in your incredible career?   I want to win three world titles in three weight classes. I won belts at 130 and 135 and now I want 140. I want to be among the greats like Wilfredo Gomez and Wilfred Benitez and Alexis Arguello. I’ll never break Roberto Duran’s record, but I’d like to be among those other names as three-time/three weight-class champions.   At 39 are you still able to perform at a world-class level?   Absolutely. I know they’re bringing in all these young guys who come to fight and try to take my head off, but I’m in great shape for this one. I had lots of time for training and I feel very confident.   You were originally supposed to face Mike Anchondo. Does the late sub of opponents bother you?   I was training for Anchondo, a former champ, and it’s always difficult to change opponents, but I’m ready for anybody they put in front of me on March 11.   Boxing at Planet Hollywood featuring Grant vs. Fields and Casamayor vs. Leyva is proudly presented by Sterling Promotions in association with American Dream Presents and Heads Up Entertainment. Rematch between light heavyweight rivals tabbed as Conquer co-main event

A second spectacular title fight will be featured on the stacked lineup for MFC 29: Conquer.

Just six weeks after claiming the MFC world light heavyweight title, newly crowned champion Ryan “The Big Deal” Jimmo will defend his belt against former champ Emanuel

“The Hardcore Kid” Newton in the co-main event of the show slated for Friday, April 8 at The Colosseum at Caesars Windsor. The bout is subject to OAC approval.

This title fight joins the scheduled battle between defending MFC world welterweight champ Douglas “The Phenom” Lima and “Dangerous” Terry Martin which tops the bill of the S.L. Feldman’s & Associates presented card airing live on HDNet Fights.

The Jimmo-Newton clash will be a rematch between the two combatants. They originally squared-off at MFC 23 with Jimmo taking a unanimous decision.

Jimmo (14-1), who also re-signed a new multi-fight contract, captured the organization’s 205-pound title at MFC 28 by topping Dwayne Lewis midway through the third round via a doctor’s stoppage TKO. It was the 14^th consecutive victory for the Halifax, Nova Scotia, product who now fights out of Edmonton, Alberta. Jimmo’s resume, which boasts six knockouts and two submissions, holds career wins over Wilson Gouveia, Marvin Eastman, and Jesse Forbes.

Newton (14-6-1) was also successful on the same night as he returned to the MFC in dramatic fashion with a second-round submission win via rear-naked choke over Rodney Wallace.

The Long Beach, California, native, who racked up an 11-fight unbeaten streak over a three-year period earlier in his career, claimed the light heavyweight crown at MFC 19 with a convincing decision win over Roger Hollett. But Newton’s reign was a short one as he dropped the title in his lone defense, falling in a five-round affair to Trevor Prangley at MFC 21.

Newton’s career log boasts two wins coming by way of knockout and five via submission. Along the way, Newton has defeated the likes of David Heath and Kyacey Uscola.

Former Heavyweight Champ Larry Holmes to Speak at UMass Dartmouth Center for Marketing Research Celebrity/ Scholarship Dinner

The Center for Marketing Research (CMR) at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth is proud to announce Heavyweight Champion, Larry Holmes will be the celebrity speaker at their 11th Annual Celebrity/ Scholarship Dinner on April 6, 2011 at the Venus de Milo Restaurant in Swansea, MA.

Holmes held the WBC Heavyweight title from 1978 thru 1983, winning his first 48 fights. He defended his title 20 times against greats like Ken Norton, Muhammad Ali, Gerry Cooney, and Tim Witherspoon. Only Joe Lewis has defended more titles with 25 wins. Holmes is ranked as one of the greatest heavyweight     fighters of all time, and was inducted into the Boxing Hall of Fame in 2008.

Born in Cuthbert, Georgia, Holmes is one of twelve children. At the age of 5, Larry and his family moved to Easton, Pennsylvania where he would earn the nickname, “The Easton Assassin”. Holmes proved very early on he was a force to be reckoned with. He started his amateur career at age 19. His amateur career record includes 19 wins, and 3 losses. At the age of 22, Larry became the sparring partner for Muhammad Ali. Two years later, Holmes began his Professional Heavyweight career.

 

Holmes became an overnight sensation by winning fights like the one against Ken Norton on June 9, 1978. This fight showed Larry’s unyielding determination, and would prove him to be a true heavyweight champion. Through this fight, Holmes’ left jab would also become an iconic piece of boxing history, and an inspiration to fighters for years to come.

Very rarely would Holmes turn down a fight. His streak of 48 straight wins, and his seven and a half years with the title made him a “Champ” of the Heavyweight industry. Even when many thought Holmes should retire, he continued to box. Contenders included Mike Tyson, Ray Mercer, Evander Holyfield, Oliver McCall, Brian Nielson, and Maurice Harris. At an age when many fighters could not comprehend getting back in the ring, Larry continued and recaptured 2 more titles (Ring Heavyweight Championship and IBF).

Aoki, a winner of three straight fights and six of seven, is a flamboyant submission artist who’ll be making his first start in America since dropping a decision to Melendez on April 17, 2010, in Nashville, Tenn., on SHOWTIME.

 

A perennial top-10 contender at 155 pounds, the 5-foot-11, 27-year-old registered a 1:00, first-round submission (keylock) over Yokthai Sithoar in his last outing on Oct. 24, 2010  Aoki, nicknamed “Tobikan Judan,’’ has not lost an MMA bout since retaining his DREAM strap with an impressive first-round submission over Kawajiri on July 7, 2019.

 

Aoki, who holds a black belt in both Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and judo, has forced opponents to tap out in 16 of his 25 wins.

 

Beerbohm suffered his first MMA defeat – amateur or pro – on a close, unanimous decision (29-28 three times) to veteranPat “Bam Bam’’ Healy in the main event of a STRIKEFORCE Challengers event on SHOWTIME at Cedar Park, Texas. on Feb. 18.

This will be the fifth start for STRIKEFORCE for the 5-foot-10, 32-year-old Beerbohm, who has won 13 of his fights by stoppage, and his first on a televised Saturday card.

 

“Losing that last fight was disappointing, but this is a golden opportunity for me to get right back in the thick of things,’’ said Beerbohm, who holds notable triumphs over four-time Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu world champion Vitor “Shaolin” Ribeiro, Duane “Bang” Ludwig and Rafaello Oliviera.

 

Beerbohm literally began his pro career after serving 366 days at the Washington State Penitentiary in Walla Walla as a result of felony convictions, all related to a crystal meth addiction. The day he was freed from prison, he visited a Jiu-Jitsu gym. He had his first amateur fight eight days later. “I traded one addiction for the other,’’ he says. “I traded meth for MMA.”

 

The championship fight between the no-nonsense, brutally honest, outspoken Diaz, whose proclivity for engaging has made him more popular and appreciated than ever, and the brazen, fast-talking, heavy-handed Daley will be a non-stop action slugfest.

It will be the third title defense for Diaz, a Cesar Gracie Jiu-Jitsu black belt who was superlative en route to turning back a determined bid by challenger Evangelista Cyborg and scoring an impressive second-round submission (armbar) in his last outing on Jan. 29 in San Jose, Calif., on SHOWTIME.

“Daley has great stand-up but he likes to talk a lot of (expletive) and I’m not really impressed with him as a mixed martial artist,” said Diaz, a 6-foot-1, 27-year-old southpaw. “We’ll see how it goes and see how he does on April 9. Let’s see if he can walk the walk. I seriously doubt it.”

One of the most recognizable, intriguing and skilled personalities in MMA, the superbly conditioned Diaz is 14-1 with 1 NC dating to May 2006 and hasn’t lost in more than three years.

Daley’s style is a mix of striking, striking and more striking. He’s won four consecutive fights and eight of nine. In a spectacular STRIKEFORCE debut, the 5-foot-9, 27-year-old demolished Scott “Hands Of Steel’’ Smith, knocking him out with a single, perfectly placed, ferocious counter  left hook at 2:09 of the opening round on Dec. 4, 2010, in St. Louis, on SHOWTIME.

The brash Brit toyed with and outclassed Yuya Shirai en route to a 1:46, first-round knockout (punches) this past Feb. 26 in Japan to secure the title shot.

“I am a striker – there is no secret about that,’’ Daley said. “I like to knock people out quickly and aggressively. No one in MMA hits like me. I’m faster and more explosive than Diaz. Diaz doesn’t have good wrestling. There is no way he’Il stand with me. I’ll smash him within three rounds. I will knock him out.’’

 

The confrontation between Melendez, a Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu stylist who re-upped with STRIKEFORCE in February, and Kawajiri, a former Shooto welterweight champion, will be a rematch of a fight that Melendez won on a close, unanimous decision on Dec. 31, 2006.

 

The 5-foot-9 Melendez will be making his first start since scoring a lopsided five-round decision over Aoki on April 17, 2010, in Nashville, Tenn., on SHOWTIME. Melendez has been triumphant in his last four starts, including a unanimous decision over Thomson in a rematch to regain the title on Dec. 19, 2009.

 

“My hand is healed and I’m 100 percent ready,’’ said Melendez, a highly decorated wrestler and Pride Bushido star who turns 29 on April 12. “I want to prove I’m the No. 1 fighter at 155 in the world. Kawajiri is one of the best anywhere. This is going to be a hard, excellent fight and I am looking forward to it. I don’t want to leave any doubt this time around. I’m ready to rip.’’

Kawajiri is 8-2 since the controversial defeat to Melendez. Nicknamed “Crusher” for his devastating power and ground and pound fighting style, the Japanese destroyer holds notable wins over Thomson, Yves Edwards, Luis Azeredo, Gesias “JZ” Cavalcante and Ribeiro from whom he captured the Shooto belt.

The 5-foot-7, 32-year-old Kawajiri’s Bushido Tournament match with Takanori Gomi was voted PRIDE Fighting Championship’s Fight of the Year in 2005. Kawajiri’s only losses came against superstar Eddie Alvarez and Aoki.

 

A winner of his last two fights (both by first-round submission) and 17 of his last 18, Mousasi will be making his first appearance for STRIKEFORCE since getting dethroned by “King Mo’’ Lawal on a five-round decision on April 17, 2010, in Nashville on SHOWTIME.

 

Still one of the most talented fighters in the 205-pound weight class, the 6-foot-1, 26-year-old Iranian-born Armenian had won 15 in a row dating to August 2006 before losing to King Mo. Mousasi captured the STRIKEFORCE belt with an impressive 3:43, first-round TKO (punches) over Renato “Babalu’’ Sobral on Aug. 15, 2009.

 

Kyle’s last effort ended in a better than looked, confidence-building second-round TKO loss on Dec. 4, 2010, to Antonio “Big Foot’’ Silva, who went on to defeat Fedor Emelianenko two months later. Despite taking the fight on short notice, the 6-foot-3, 31-year-old Kyle was competitive throughout and scored a knockdown in the first.

 

Overall, the well-rounded Kyle has gone 5-1 with one No Contest since losing to Fabricio Werdum on Aug. 15, 2009. Since April 2008, Kyle is 8-2 with one NC.

 

Michael “The Brazilian Rocky” Oliveira returns home to fight Mar. 25 in Sao Paulo

Interim WBC Latino title fight vs. Abel Adriel

MIAMI (Mar. 9, 2011) – Undefeated Michael “The Brazilian Rocky” Oliveira returns home for his second consecutive fight in his native Brazil, March 25 versus unbeaten Argentinean prospect Abel “El Principito” Nicolas Adriel for the Interim World Boxing Council Latino Super Middleweight Championship, headlining the “International Boxing Challenge” pro-am event at Mauro Pinheiro Gymnasium in Sao Paulo.

 

“International Boxing Challenge,” presented by MO Productions, will air live on SporTV, TV Globo International and GloboEsporte.com. A 4-round pro bout between a pair of Sao Paulo middleweights, pro-debuting Douglas Ataibeand Valdevan “Baiano” Pereira, is on the card as well as a pair of soon-to-be-announced amateur matches, featuring members of the Brazilian National Olympic Boxing Team..

 

The 20-year-old Oliveira (13-0, 11 KOs), now rated No. 10 by the USBA, was born in Sao Paulo but he moved two weeks after birth with his family to Miami. In his Brazilian debut last November in Sao Paulo, Oliveira stopped rugged Junior Ramos (10-5) in the third round.

 

Oliveira, who won the UNBC title September 11, 2009, recently was selected as the repeat winner of the Brazilian International Press Award’s Athlete of the Year (2009 and now 2010).

 

“We’re very excited to announce that we have signed a contract with TV Globo to televise Michael’s next six fights starting March 25,” MO Productions president and Michael’s father, Carlos Oliveira, said. “Our goal is to position Michael, at home in Brazil, as a future world champion. We believe Michael has the talent and marketability to be a star in Brazil, converting Brazilian sports fans into his supporters. Soccer isn’t the only sport in Brazil and we’re expecting a lot of support in Sao Paulo.

 

“The March 25^th show will be a memorable evening of entertainment for everybody. Famed Brazilian pianist and conductor, Joao Carlos Martins, will perform the Brazilian National Anthem prior to the 10-round main event; Brazilian choreographer Ivaldo Bertazzo’s extraordinary work will be part of the event, and Michael’s walk-out music will be supported by the Drummers of Maccha-Verde School of Samba.”

 

Oliveira has returned to his roots in hopes of reestablishing boxing back to the days of Brazilian boxing icons, Hall of Famer Eder “Golden Bantam” Jofre, and more recent superstar Acelino “Popo” Freitas.

 

Brazilians and Argentineans are traditional arch-rivals in sports and the 21-year-old Adriel, who fights out of Pigue, Buenos Aires, Argentina, is a natural foe for Oliveira, who has many family members and friends living in Brazil. Adriel is a consummate boxer who fought a pair of draws in his second and third pro fights. He fought 10 times last year and once in 2011, when he won a unanimous 8-round decision against Fernando Enrique Battaglia this past January in Buenos Aires.

Cops Vs. Robbers Boxing Show In Basildon 3rd April

Danny Stoten, owner of the Lions Boxing Gym in Chelmsford, announces a highly interesting double event boxing show,  ‘Cops versus Robbers’ and ‘The Jenna Barber Cup’ , which will take place at Liquid Nightclub, Festival Leisure Park in Basildon, Essex, on Sunday 3rd April 2011.

Danny has created this very special  double event in order to raise funds for the St Francis Hospice in Romford, Essex.
The ‘Cops versus Robbers’ main event features serving members of the Essex Police force, trained by Lions Boxing Gym, against a variety of Southern Counties boxers who come from, lets just say, very different backgrounds.

The Jenna Barber Cup is new novice Cruiserweight championship for Essex Police boxers and is in honour of Jenna Barber, a young lady who recently passed away from cancer.

The Lions Boxing Gym promoted ‘Cops versus Robbers’ and ‘The Jenna Barber Cup’ double event will be held at the Liquid Nightclub, Festival Leisure Park, Basildon, Essex, on Sunday 3rd April 2011.

Doors open at 7pm and the first bout will be at 7.30pm.

SERGIO PETTIS AMONGST THE NEXT WAVE

With that in mind, head trainer Duke Roufus has made a point of helping secure the future of the sport as well. “I love to train the young guys. It’s really exciting to see the next crop of athletes developing before our eyes.”

Amongst those up-and-comers are fighters such as Israel Abiles, Rose Namajunas, and the younger brother of “Showtime,” Sergio Pettis. These youngsters are still high school age, but are committed to becoming the best fighters they can be. And Roufusport is doing their part to help facilitate that.

“This gym is unique,” explains Sergio. “We have a lot of great fighters here, including my brother, Anthony, Pat Barry, Danny Downes, and others. And Duke is a great teacher.”

Sergio has high hopes for himself, and believes that Roufusport is the place where he can brings those dreams to fruition.

“For myself, I want to try to make it to the UFC like my brother, and be a competitor, a champion in whatever weight class I end up in.”

Though MMA has grown into what many consider to be a mainstream sport, there are many that still fear the impact of the sport on everyday culture. Sergio is a sterling example of why this isn’t a correct perspective.

“I think training MMA is a great way to learn to control yourself, and it brings discipline and structure. Duke forbids anybody fighting outside the gym…he’s very clear on that.”

It’s also clear that Roufusport is doing its part to ensure the future of MMA.
