Teen ‘Golden Boy’ Jake Towse Aims For ABA Success On March 12th

Following his sensational Gold winning performance, at the British University and Colleges Championships in Coventry last week, Brighton teenager Jake Towse, who fights for the Hastings West Hill Amateur Boxing Club, is hoping to repeat this success in the Southern Counties ABA competition on Saturday 12th March.

Back on the 20th February, at the BUCS competition Jake dominated the 63.5kg final, against Portsmouth’s Richard Tyler, with his superior boxing skills to secure the Gold medal by a 35-26 points margin.

Following a training session with Johnny Eames at the Ultrachem TKO Boxing Gym in Canning Town, London, 19 year old Jake spoke briefly on his Gold winning performance and his future plans. “I just won Gold at the British University Championships, hopefully this will get me going further and people will recognise me more as I want to box for England, hopefully. I want to get into some international competitions.

It was a good fight for me and went well. I knew my game plan when I see that he was quite short and stocky, so when he came out I thought I’d box him.

First round I was doing well, teeing off and keeping him in range. Then he started getting in so I started letting heavy shots go. I was catching him with body shots and everything.

Second round same thing. Third round was toe-to-toe and just warred it out. I didn’t take many punches at all. I had quite a high guard, sticking behind my jab and sinking in the body shots. When his head was free to hit I hit him in the head, scored points. I won by nine points in the end.

My preparations were really good. Been coming down here to the TKO because of the good sparring and trainers. It’s a great opportunity for myself as I’d love to turn pro, obviously the big dream is to be a World Champion, but obviously it’s just to see how far I can go.

I think I am more suited to the pros but right now I’m at University and it’s right full on so I want to get that out of the way and then go straight for the pros. I’ve got this year and next year and then I’ll have finished University”

Technically, he (Dzinziruk) is one of the best I’ve seen. The kid is very sound. This is his toughest fight and probably the toughest fighter Sergio has faced. Sergiy isn’t well known here but he is the top ’54 pounder. It’s a terribly difficult fight for Sergio but it’s what he wants. HBO has very good fight. I’m worried but I have faith in my champion who understands the challenge.”

Cotto and Steward Predict KO Within Four Rounds

Mayorga’s Reply: “They’re Both Clowns and Both Failures”

NEW YORK (March 1, 2011) — World Boxing Association (WBA) Super Welterweight Champion Miguel Cotto, two-division World Champion Ricardo Mayorga and Cotto’s trainer, Emanuel Steward, participated in a national media conference call to discuss the upcoming, highly-anticipated world championship event on Saturday, March 12, at MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nev., produced and distributed LIVE on SHOWTIME PPV®, beginning at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.

Cotto, the Pride of Puerto Rico, will defend his World Boxing Association (WBA) super welterweight title against two-division world champion Mayorga in the main event.

Cotto, of Caguas, Puerto Rico, has held a world title every year since 2004 and has won 15 of the 17 world championship bouts he has fought. Mayorga, of Managua, Nicaragua, is known for his reckless abandon and fearlessness inside the ring – a style of fighting that has produced 23 knockouts out of his 29 victories and legions of fans.

The event also marks the first time in five years that Hall of Fame promoters Bob Arum and Don King have joined forces for a promotion. On Thursday at 1 p.m. ET / 10 a.m. PT both promoters will host their own conference call.

MIGUEL COTTO:
“I don’t care what he (Mayorga) is saying about me. He’s always going to be talking but, as everyone knows, the fight starts when you enter the ring and that’s where I’m going to win the fight; in the ring.”

Mayorga’s been known to be able to take a punch. Where do you plan to take this fight?
“I’m going everywhere. I’m going to the body. I’m going upstairs. I just want to give the fans the best fight possible. I just want to prepare to give the fans the best fight possible.

“I never make any excuses; and the same thing with this fight. I’m coming and I’m going to be prepared for what I need to do to win.

“I feel like I’ve had a great career. It’s been very productive. I know it’s near the end of it, but I feel like it’s the beginning. I feel great and I feel like I have a lot left in me before I go.”

Do you see this being an easy fight if you execute your game plan?
“Every fight is easy, no? We are preparing for whatever type of Mayorga we see this night. I’m going to capitalize on any type of mistake he makes on this night.

“I feel so much better with my movement now in 2011 than I did back in 2008 and 2009. I’m pretty happy with the way I’m training now. My fans know that Miguel Cotto always comes to fight and always puts on a show.

“I’ve prepared the best I can and I’ve done my preparation, so now we will find out in the ring.

“I’m always motivated when I go into the ring. The last 10 years I’ve felt exactly the same way. I know what stage of my career I’m in and I know that it’s important to be at my best at this time.

“It’s 11 days from the fight and I’m ready. I’m just putting the final preparations in my training. It’s going to be a great night for all of boxing on March 12.”

RICARDO MAYORGA:
“I feel like I’m in the best shape of my life. I feel like I’ve had the best camp of my career. I feel so disciplined for this fight that I’d fight tomorrow if I had to.

“If there are any doubters out there who don’t believe that I’m in the best shape of my life, I’m willing to make myself available for a public exhibit to show my weight on Monday in L.A. I’m at weight and I will show anyone.”

Miguel Cotto and Emanuel Steward are both predicting a knockout within four rounds. How do you respond?
“They’re both clowns and they’re both failures and I will prove that they are both failures. That’s how I respond to that.

“This is the fight where I’m going to impose my will so much so that – because I want that fight so bad with (Manny) Pacquiao – that if I don’t beat Cotto by knockout and I happen to beat him by decision then I don’t feel like I’m deserving of a fight with Pacquiao. So that’s how strongly I feel I’m going to win this fight.

“Manny is a human being just like everyone else. He’s not invincible like God. The advantage he has is that when people step into the ring with him they fight with fear and they are very tentative. I would not come in with any fear and would not be tentative.

“When I knock out Manny Pacquiao I will become the most famous fighter of all time. So that’s what I want and am working for.”

Why did you have such a long layoff of almost two years after your fight with Mosley?
“Before my fight with Trinidad I was in a real bad car accident and not a lot of people knew that in the press here in the United States. Not only did I fight that Trinidad fight but also the Mosley fight with that spinal injury. And I took those two years off to heal and get better.

“I plan to step on the scales on March 11 at the weigh-in with a plate of Puerto Rican food to show Miguel that I’m in the best shape of my life.

“I really can’t care at all what other people think and that if I’m deserving of a title shot. All I care about is taking full advantage of it and crowning myself world champion for the fourth time.

“I don’t think Cotto will be the toughest puncher I’ve ever faced. Every time he gets into trouble or his mettle gets tested, he goes backwards. That’s been very consistent in the fights he has lost. And he has not been hit harder than I will hit him. Not even against Margarito. I’ll hit him harder than that.

“I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Emanuel Steward is a failure in this boxing business. He’s had some sort of fame and been very lucky in his career because he helped a very famous name back in the day. That’s how he grabbed some sort of attention and fame. But how sad for Cotto to change his style and try to change his boxing game at this late stage of his career. It’s only going to mess him up and play into my favor.

“I know I’m going to have to run all over the ring. I know he’s going to have skates on with some turbos and he’s going to be running all night long and I’m going to have to chase him down.

“My immediate goals are to knock out Cotto and then to fight and knock out Pacquiao. I’m 37 years old and also thinking about retirement. I will move on and let the younger guys have a shot just like the older guys did for me when I was coming up.

“A final message to Miguel Cotto: After I retire him from boxing I have spoken to Ricky Martin’s camp and they say they have an opening for him and that he can work for Ricky Martin.”

EMANUEL STEWARD, Cotto’s trainer:
“Miguel is a lot faster and has more power this time; more so than the last fight. Particularly his speed this time has impressed me a lot more.”

What is the secret to beating Mayorga?
“Mayorga is very physically and mentally strong and a very unorganized fighter which makes it very difficult to lay out a game plan and strategy the way it was fighting Yuri Foreman, which was to cut down the ring and take the space away from Yuri. With Mayorga, you have to have two or three plans. Whenever you fight a kamikaze fighter like him it’s always dangerous. He’s always going for the home run, so you never know when you’ll be fortunate enough to land a punch. So you have to respect that and have to be prepared to out-box him and not let him start bullying you. You may have to change up. I think the key to victory though will be short punches whether it be jabs, or left hooks or right hands. But Mayorga has to have swinging room. But it’s fortunate that Miguel is one of the best short-distance punchers I have ever worked with and who we’ve ever had in this sport. So I think the key is the short, accurate punches. The final round of his fights with both Oscar De La Hoya and Shane Mosley was basically where he was knocked out with short punches and not with long punches.

“Miguel is in great shape if the fight has to go one round or 12 rounds. I just don’t see it being a boring fight. That’s the one thing I know for sure. We expect a very crazy fight as long as it lasts.

“No one’s ever had an easy time with Mayorga. That’s been with all the greats he’s been in there with like Trinidad, Mosley and De La Hoya. Miguel has been punching with both hands really well, especially now that his right shoulder is fully healed. I personally don’t see this fight going more than four rounds. I know (Mayorga’s) predicting he will win within four rounds but I just don’t see Mayorga lasting that long with the accuracy of his punches which only means it’s going to be a very exciting and explosive fight.

“I’ve been surprised by the progress. I’m really trying to get Miguel to go back and be the fighter he used to be. As an amateur fighter he was a brilliant boxer-puncher. Just a couple weeks ago, I saw something on YouTube and he looked like a miniature Sugar Ray Leonard. He said to me, ‘Steward, you don’t have to say too much. It’s just that I got so strong I kind of got away from my boxing skills.’ He’s very intelligent, like so many of boxing’s superstars.”

NEW YORK (March 1, 2011) – Yuri Foreman is one of the many fighters on the March 12 SHOWTIME PPV card from MGM Grand in Las Vegas with an amazing story of perseverance. In the last year, Foreman lost his WBA Super Welterweight World Championship, tore his ACL, had a child with his wife and lost his long time manager and friend, Murray Wilson.

Through it all, Foreman stayed committed to his family, Jewish faith and boxing. On Tuesday while holding a workout from Kingsway Gym in Manhattan, Foreman looked swift while going through his routine without a knee brace and kept the media laughing afterwards. Below are some highlights.

Foreman on the status of his surgically repaired knee:
“Doctors say it should be no problem. It should be as strong as before. Yesterday, it was raining, for example, I felt it. I feel the weather. Good thing the fight is Vegas; the chance of rain is slim.”

Will Foreman wear a brace for this March 12 fight?
“No brace. It’s going to be like Forrest Gump. The joint itself will be stronger [than before the injury].”

Foreman’s feelings about being on this pay-per-view broadcast with his old friends at SHOWTIME :
“It’s great. Listen, it’s one of the biggest channels out there today. It’s a great honor and I’m thanking SHOWTIME for the opportunity. I love it.”

On what he expects from his March 12 opponent Pawel Wolak:
“A lot of pressure. That’s what he does, a lot of pressure. I guess he lives up to his name, ‘Raging Bull.’ Once in a while, he’s jabbing with his head. I have to be careful… be ready for the pressure.”

On fighting without a title:
“I always consider myself an underdog. Even winning the world title, I considered myself an underdog so losing the world title, nothing has changed. I’m still hungry. There’s a lot of work to do.”

“Losing the title, you know I had many things after that: surgery, birth of my son and the passing of my friend and manager, Murray Wilson, in a short amount of time. Everything happens for a reason. In Judaism, they say everything that happens is always for the good. So I take that experience as a positive experience.”

On boxing fans commending Foreman’s courageous performance with a torn ACL at Yankee Stadium against Miguel Cotto:
“I came home and had 300 friend requests from Puerto Rico from Facebook, so that’s good… that was a joke.”

Does Foreman like fighting as a New Yorker?
“Being the capital of the world, coming to this city and great country ten years ago, I never even had a vision that I would fight in Yankee Stadium or even be world champion. The saying, ‘If you make it in New York, you can make everywhere work,’ you know, it’s true. In different countries, if you belong to a certain ethnic group, perhaps you’re not going to make it because you’re born a different color. But here, no matter what your background is, if you put in 100 percent, you can make it and nobody will look at you as this [outsider]; you’re a world champion. That’s what’s really great about it. I love this city. I love the people.”

On how long until Foreman becomes a rabbi:
“Probably less than a year.”

On what he would have done differently from the Cotto fight:
“Perhaps stay away from the wet, wet patches in the ring. Boxing is not a sprint. It’s a marathon race and I had the plan for 12 rounds, not for six. Unfortunately, when you come to the fight, for example, you have A, B, C plan but with an injury like that, there’s no B plan.”

Does Foreman want a rematch with Cotto?
“Yea, of course. I’ll always have the desire. It’s up to, of course, Bob [Arum]. But you know, I don’t have a yearly plan.”

On how having a child changes everything:
“I have a bird, a parrot. Before the baby, the parrot was like my baby. ‘Oh, make sure he eats.’ And after the baby, my parrot just became a pet.

With a stronger knee, will we see more power and knock outs from Foreman?
“Who knows? Knock outs, I don’t even remember when was [the last time I scored one].

Could Foreman take his fellow actor, Channing Tatum, from Fighting in a real fight?
“Channing Tatum? I have a very good chance to beat him up. Smash his head into the water fountain.”

AL BERNSTEIN CALLS RIOS-ACOSTA A CLASSIC IN A GREAT DIVISION

Showtime boxing analyst Al Bernstein called the Miguel Acosta-Brand Rios WBA Lightweight Title match “a classic, fought in a weight division that could produce other classics in the coming months and years.” He added, “That was our kick-off Showtime Championship Boxing match of 2011 and it turned out to be one of the most skillfully fought and most exciting matches the lightweights have seen in years.”

Bernstein was at the mic for what many call the greatest lightweight title match of all time, the 2005 battle between Diego Corrales and Jose Luis Castillo. “I received tweets and e-mails from many people comparing this match to Corrales-Castillo,” Al said, “and this one also ended by stoppage in the 10th round.”

On May 7th Bernstein will be at ringside to call the rematch of what many thought was the fight of the year in 2010—when WBC Lightweight Champ Humberto Soto defends his crown against Urbana Antillon. That fight is part of the Manny Pacquiao-Shane Mosley Showtime Pay per View. Soto’s decision win over Antillon received a number of fight of the year awards. “The lightweight division is one of the best in boxing,” Al concluded.

Better Laight Than Never For Boylan

Carshalton’s Ricky Boylan returned to the Ultrachem TKO Gym in Canning Town this week in order to prepare for his upcoming showdown against Kristian Laight, on the Steve Goodwin promoted ‘Essex Eruption’ quadruple headline show at the Goresbrook Leisure Centre in Dagenham, Essex on Saturday 19th March 2011.

The ‘Essex Eruption’ event should have been the second outing of the year for the former London ABA finalist, who had been due to fight Craig Dyer at York Hall on the 20th February but due to a family crisis had to withdraw.

Following a training session at the Ultrachem TKO Boxing Gym in Canning Town Ricky explained why he withdrew from the February show, “Basically I had a little niggling injury I was working through in the gym but then my Dad had a stroke that week, so I didn’t want to get in the ring in the wrong frame of mind and then get a silly loss, it’s not worth it, so Johnny (Eames) pulled me out.

My Dad’s getting on, he’s doing well. He’s getting much better.”

Ricky then went on to talk about his upcoming fight with Kristian Laight on March 19th, “I’ve been training hard, I come back properly on Monday, I’ve still been ticking over but from Monday I’ve been doing it one hundred percent.

Kristian Laight, he’s massive, truly massive. He’s a tall southpaw so I’ll have to put the pressure on, let plenty of right hands go and hopefully come away with another win.

I always get good sparring here, but for this fight there’s a couple of people really for it, you know tall southpaws. There’s a guy from my area called Tony Owen. I’ve done a few rounds with him recently. Probably do some rounds with Bradley Skeete. There’s Freddie Turner up here obviously, just whoever Johnny thinks will give me the right sparring for the fight really. Whoever he gets me to spar I’ll be happy to spar them.

This should be my fourth fight but it’s going to be the second. To be honest the first one on the George Groves show that wasn’t anyone’s fault, that was just Hayemaker boxing. The second one I boxed on that one, and won. The third one, well that couldn’t be helped, because of my Dad. Hopefully the fourth one on the the 19th will be OK and be my second actual fight.”

‘Pretty’ Ricky Boylan versus Kristian Laight will be at the Steve Goodwin promoted ‘Essex Eruption’ Goresbrook Leisure Centre in Dagenham, Essex on Saturday 19th March 2011.

‘Essex Eruption’ is co-headlined by International Masters Light Middleweight champion Yassine ‘The Showman’ El Maachi against a yet to be named opponent, Southern Area Cruiserweight champion Leon ‘Solid’ Williams versus David Vicena, British Master challenger ‘Phat’ Pat McAleese faces Franz Vicena and Romford’s top ten rated Cruiserweight Tony ‘The Conqueror’ Conquest against a yet to be named opponent.

In addition to Ricky Boylan versus Kristian Laight the undercard of the quadruple headlined super show includes a whole host local talent including Ricky’s Ultrachem TKO team mates Daniel Herdman, who faces Kevin McCauley, and the highly rated unbeaten Featherweight prospect ‘Saint’ George Jupp against a yet to be named opponent.

Michael ‘The Zambezi Hitman’ Norgrove will be looking to extend his unbeaten record to five when he faces Czech Republic’s Jan Balog. Another fighter who will be looking to increase his uneaten record is Biggleswade’s Jamie Boness.

Middleweight Kris Agyei-Dua and Danny Brown will be making their second outing in a Month, after both securing wins on their debuts at York Hall on February 20th.

Further fights are expected to be announced shortly to bring the ‘Essex Eruption’ card to fourteen bouts.
